💫 SpaceX made history today! It successfully performed an abort test of its Crew Dragon spacecraft. . Shortly after liftoff, the empty Crew Dragon capsule that will house astronauts in the future separated from the Falcon 9 rocket 🚀 before the rocket exploded 💥 to mimic an emergency or catastrophic event. . Delayed by one day due to bad weather, the launch today marks the first time that SpaceX successfully performed this critical test. . Did you see the launch? Leave a comment! . 🚀 Like this content? The Transantarctic Mountains separate East and West Antarctica. This geologically active region of the continent is home to volcanoes such as Mount Erebus and glaciers such as the Byrd Glacier that change and carve Antarctica’s surface. Due to its isolation, Antarctica is rich in research opportunities ranging from studying climate change through analyzing ice cores to investigating the origins of life in subglacial lakes. Beautiful but deadly. The calm eye of the Hurricane Isabel is surrounded by turbulent and violent winds as can be seen from the International Space Station. Hurricane Isabel was the strongest and the deadliest storm in 2003 and caused more than $5 billion in damage. Heat and energy trapped by increased levels of carbon dioxide by fossil fuels is released as more powerful storms that can be devastating not only to the United States but other parts of the world. Stings from the box jellyfish, Chironex fleckeri, are extremely painful and can result in cardiac arrest that can be fatal to humans. Recent advances using CRISPR based genomic screening revealed that the venom is released from from explosive cells called nematocytes that burst upon pressure application. One of the targets of the venom is the calcium ATPase - a membrane protein - that serves to remove calcium from the cell. Disruption of calcium ion concentration disrupts cell signaling pathways. The rocket engines used in the (now retired) space shuttle and many rocket systems utilize a pinched tube configuration known as the de Laval nozzle. Combustion of fuel occurs in one chamber, and the expanded gases are squeezed through the throat of the nozzle after which they enter the second chamber and then exit. This configuration increases the speed of the gases to greater then Mach 1 and provides the thrust necessary to eventually achieve escape velocity. NASA’s Juno probe was launched in 2011 from Cape Canaveral, and it entered polar orbit around Jupiter in 2016. In its three years, the spacecraft has gathered data on the origins of the planet’s magnetic field, its gravity field, and mapping the variations of its atmospheric composition. The bull is a common animal motif that can be traced back to the Paleolithic age to at least 40,000 years ago. This animal motif is found in cave art and eternalized in the night sky as the prominent constellation Taurus, thus exemplifies its important relationship with humanity. The bull and the bison represent animals of great strength that can be harnessed by humans in agricultural, and a source of food, while the constellation contains many objects of interests such as the Pleiades star cluster and the red giant Aldebaran. Known as the “Demon Star”, Algol (derived from ra’s al-ghul head of ogre in Arabic) is actually a triple star system in the constellation Perseus who slayed the gorgon Medusa. Algol has long been known as a variable star since 1667, however, the mechanism for its variability of its brightness was confirmed about 200 years later when it was found that the star was actually a competent of an eclipsing binary. Algol is considered one of the unluckiest stars as it was associated with bloody violence throughout history across many cultures. Global mean surface temperature change over the last century. Notice the overall increase in temperature since 1880 of about 1-1.4 degrees Celsius. If heat trapping greenhouse gas emissions are not curbed, increased in global temperature will create a positive feedback loop where more trapped arctic carbon dioxide (in tundra peat) would be released upon thawing. Astrocytes are star-shaped glial cells in the brain and the spinal cord. They are important in forming the blood-brain barrier that acts as a sieve to allow small molecules such as glucose and amino acids to pass through while preventing large toxins from entering neuronal cells. Astrocytes are also crucial in providing nutrients to neurons and regulating certain biochemical processes such as propagation of ion waves across the cell membrane. The hunger hormones leptin and ghrelin are critical for regulating hunger and thus weight. The secretion of leptin decreases appetite, while the secretion of ghrelin increases appetite. Shown here is a photograph of two mice. The mouse on the left is a gene knockout of the protein hormone leptin that cannot decrease its appetite, and thus cannot regulate its weight effectively. The Summer Triangle is a group of three stars Deneb (left center), Vega (top left) and Altair (lower center) that appears in the northern celestial hemisphere. Altair and Vega are both relatively near stars both less than or about 25 light years away. Not only do they share proximity to our sun, they both rotate so extremely fast that they exist as oblate spheroids due to centrifugal force. Cetaceans are marine mammals that can be divided into two large groups - those with teeth like the dolphins 🐬 and porpoises, and those with filter-feeder systems such as the baleen whale 🐋. Cetaceans evolved from ungulates over 50 million years ago - about 16 million years after the extinction of the dinosaurs, and their closest living relative is the hippo 🦛.Cetaceans such as dolphins exhibit high intelligence due to a great degree of encephalization (large brain-to-body weight ratio) and the abundance of usually rare spindle neurons 🧠 that are crucial for fast transmission of information in a large brain. Current research suggests that the appearance of spindle neurons in cetaceans is an example of convergent evolution due to echolocation and the formation of social groups. .
