Absurdly overdue, but at long last, I have worked up the will to watch the VE movie. And I gotta say, I actually liked that the pacing wasn’t as choppy and the storyline isn’t as incoherent as in the anime series. I loved Yuris’s story. It was the highlight of the whole movie for me, if I’m being very honest, and I remember a lot of Anons saying the same thing back when the title had just been released. Another highlight is that my headcanon that Gil and Dietfried’s dad would be voiced by either Nakata Jouji or Hayami Shou was spot-on. It’s all about being a Fate Series fanfic even when it isn’t. 👌

The rest of this movie, though... it did horribly in the romance department, but the glaring amount of sheer dedication poured into it makes me wish we could’ve seen that story with characters other than Gil and Violet. I keep thinking that it could’ve been Luculia and Spencer instead, with the same plot, except familial in nature instead of romantic. It would’ve been a thousand times more interesting than Luculia’s episode in the show.

There was just a lot of detail and thought put into the course of events and how one thing leads to the other in this movie, even though sometimes things happened inexplicably. Like Gilbert teleporting from his home to the grape plantation during the few minutes that Hodgins and Violet were talking to each other, and then back to his home in the apparently short meantime that they were looking for him. A good half of the movie was a nice watch, and it’s a pity to see it wasted on so many cold takes about Gil and his relationship with Violet.

Also, I feel kinda bad for this, but I cry-laughed REALLY hard when Gil and Violet were running towards each other at the end. I literally don’t remember the last time my stomach and cheeks hurt so much. On one side, we’ve got Gilbert rolling off the cliff like a huge sack of shit, and on the other, we have Violet slowly emerging from the sea full-on Godzilla style. I fucking lost it, y’all.

So yeah, I did like the parts of the movie that weren’t about GilVi, and all the while, I was hoping we can one day get a remake where this story is recycled to give Luculia the awesome backstory she deserves. But boy, did a lot of stuff rub me the wrong way in this thing. Mainly related to Gil, of course.

I couldn’t stand the way he abandoned everyone and everything, and then didn’t even bat a lash at his best friend and older brother when they came to see him after so many years. Or how the movie backpedals real hard at Violet’s character development. Or that Violet’s friends and family don’t seem to miss her much and her absence is accepted rather fast.

I hated that Gil and Dietfried’s roles reversed completely. That Gil only went after Violet once Dietfried guaranteed he’d be free of his duties as heir of the Bougainvillea. That Violet didn’t say she loved him in the end. All of this and a lot more.

But I had already read about what would happen as soon as the movie came out in Japan. I knew very well what to expect, so it didn’t bother me as much. I just get amused at the huge discrepancy between novel!Gil, who says he isn’t worthy of Violet despite the fact that there’s literally no one better than him for her in canon, and anime!Gil saying it, with it being completely true this time. I can’t deal with how hysterical that is.

One thing that bothers me, though, is that the anime seems to have ended on a rather dull note. That last scene where Violet is walking through a dark road completely alone felt very lonely and quite depressing. Compared to the novel’s counterpart, the last page of volume 2, where Violet is walking next to a rail road towards a glorious sunrise, it’s really clear how both have completely opposite vibes. The books are full of hope and positivity, of love actually winning against adversity in the best ways possible without being unconvincing. Meanwhile, the anime is limiting and lacks heart aside from its original content. It doesn’t take the source material seriously enough and gives its own material too much attention.

I always have a hard time reminding myself of why it is the way it is. And coming to terms with the fact that we’ll never see the best of it. That we can only have it on paper and in our heads. It sure is frustrating, but at the very least, the novel still continues to offer us bits of happiness every now and then, and that’s enough comfortation for me.

Anyway, back to translating Last Letter. >:^)

My old prologue for my book about my OCs

(Prolly scrapping this because I had a new idea so sharing!)

It was almost too perfect of a day.

Perfect sales revenue for the month, not too much of the typical hubbub thanks to Mrs Marlborough not showing up and even a new deal closed with the Antonescu Family - the day was shaping up to be a phenomenal day of business for Enola. Yet, as she sat by the main counter, silently counting up the earnings of the day before she could close up for the night, a feeling of unease crept up upon her. Today was perfect. Too perfect. No matter how much she tried to bury that thought, it snuck back into her mind, almost as if someone was annoying her by repeating the words into her ear. Her brow creased in frustration. And then, there it was.

Three jaunty knocks at the shop door.

Her head turned upwards. She had played this charade before. Enola quickly placed the cash back inside the register, locked it shut, and placed a hand on her cane, pushing herself off of the stool.

“We’re closed! Come back tomorrow!”

“Please Miss Winthrop, just a moment of your time if I may!” came the wheezy voice from the other side.

Enola groaned. This had better be the last time. She reluctantly made her way to the door, and opened it, recognising the young navy-blue haired girl with orange eyes and a purple hat, adorned with many kinds of flowers; someone Enola had gotten all too familiar with these past two weeks.

“Luculia.” she flashed a dry smile “What brings you back here?”

Luculia stopped to catch her breath for a moment, before speaking up again.

“I’m here… to try again… Please.” She looked at Enola through pleading eyes as Enola weighed her options. Bloody hell. What was she going to do differently this time? Enola let out a frustrated sigh. “Fine. Come in.” 

She hobbled in, heading for her desk; Luculia followed. She sat down again, facing Luculia on the other side. “So,” she began “Tell me why you should get another chance at this.”

“... You’re… not giving me chances, are you.” Luculia remarked. “I’ve seen what other people have said about you. People who you’ve turned away. You’re a refined, thoughtful lady… but you nitpick other’s flaws easily. That’s why you’re so understaffed, isn’t it? You see minor flaws as… weaknesses?” 

Enola froze, and had to reexamine the girl carefully for a moment. That was a first. “So you’re saying? I like my workers to be in good condition. To be able to be dedicated for the role, so to speak. What can you offer?”

Luculia seemed determined not to lose this battle again.

“I’m asking you to give me a chance. To prove myself. You like to be rid of people before they get the chance to show you what they’ve got…” She paused, considering her next words carefully.

“So let me prove you wrong. Let me change your mind by showing you my skills, and how I can benefit your brand by putting them to use.”

Goodness. Now that was food for thought. Enola sat in silence for a moment, taking everything in as she clasped her hands together in front of her.

“... Miss Winthrop?”

“... Fine.”

Luculia’s eyes widened. “Wait, seriously?”

Enola sighed then nodded, her expression still thoughtful. “Do I have to say it again? But… you’ve shown me an interesting side of yourself tonight, Miss Bougainvillea. I look forward to seeing you, in your words, ‘put it to good use’.”

The girl smiled widely in response “Ah, thank you so much! I’ll make you proud, I promise!”

Enola grimaced a little, remembering just how much energy she’d had upon their previous meetings. Oh sisters. “Yes, yes, you’ll start Monday. Be here as soon as the shop opens - we’ll discuss your working times then. Now please go home. I have important things to do, as you know.”

Luculia pointed at her with both index fingers in a confusing motion, thumbs raised. “You got it! Thanks for this!” And just like that, the ball of energy was up and out in no time.

EXTRA CONTEXT

Fun fact: Remus influenced Luculia to try and gaslight Enola into getting a job 😭😭 (Another OC I need to infodump on omg my guy does NOT have a track record of being a good influence)

Mrs Marlborough is a background character! I have like a digital drawing of her even from a few months ago but that might get posted in the Winthrop lore dump, planning on making others maybe based off of old OCs for the story

Thinking of making this the canon anecdote of Lu getting hired, though COULD make adjustments idk I'd like to see you guys's thoughts too

I really thought that Gilbert was going to find out more about Violet's past. second Benedict said that he had found clues about his younger sister, but the subject is not mentioned again, we know that he has been saving to make another trip to find her

We should petition for Akatsuki Kana to write more, lol. Jk but I'd love if VE came back one day to explain all the shit that was never revealed or confirmed.

I am one of those people who first saw the anime and then read the novel, obviously I prefer the novel, without reading the novel, I realized that characters like Erika and Iris are empty, especially Erika who we only know that she wants to be a writer and iris i hate her

I like that “obviously” a lot. XD

Sorry it doesn't let me write much but it continued. Erika is a character who happens in limbo, she has nothing interesting and she has no chemistry with anyone. pffff Erika×benedicto seems like a joke, Cat, well at first it gave me a good impression, well you know I saw the anime first, but I prefer the Novela, even so it is the only one of the group of ch that I like as a friend of Violeta, or older sister, since they do have chemistry, I'm not satisfied with Cat anime, but I like it

I agree with the take on Cattleya as well. She's the only canon character whose anime counterpart didn't bother me that much. But yes, she's a thousand times more interesting in the novel. I think I didn't mind her because they changed her appearance so much along with her personality that it felt like I was looking at an entirely different character, just with the same name.

I hate that they removed the gay part from the anime, but she is the only one in the anime who can be considered Violet's best friend, because they have a lot of chemistry. the only character that was created by the Anime that I like is Luculia, because unlike Erika and Iris (you don't know how much I hate iris) she is the only one who is interested in Violeta and wants to help her in a certain way, maybe they are not the best friends but they look good

Lux will always be the bestie and without her, there's no bestie at all! And yeah, I like Luculia too. I like all the characters from the Doll school, tbh. They were nice.

You don't know how much I hate Iris, it's something that has stayed with me since the 2nd chapter, she's a capricious girl and her reason for being a doll doesn't make sense, she doesn't seem to have talent either, in her story they want to make her look like someone who breaks stereotypes with him typical "there is more to life than marrying a man" and wearing pants

Not much makes sense in the anime, tbh. And actually, Iris did want to marry a guy, lol. Btw, her pants were a design choice in order to make the characters have different styles from each other, according to Takase Akiko. In the last movie, she's wearing a skirt.

without realizing Violet (more in the novel than anime of course) does not break, like breaking a pencil, if she does not put a bomb on the word stereotype and she is not a woman, she is a WOMAN (in the novel it is clearer why is more independent than in the anime, since in the novel he destroys even the universe) successful, hard-working, strong (strong if he falters if we talk about anime) and capable of anything for the love of his life (in this part I prefer put Gil novel)

I don't get why Violet's pronouns are masculine here, but I agree with this too.

Well, I've gotten off the topic of my hatred of Iris, she's an empty character, her actions have no motive or reason, they should have placed her in another section as a portfolio if she wants to break stereotypes so much, they should never have placed her as "Violet's best friend" that no one eats it

Iris must have come across as someone who doesn't like Violet or someone who at first didn't like her, but now she likes her a little better, if we left her as a best friend she would be a bit toxic, don't you think?

Well, I don’t think they’re best friends. Even the anime never really mentioned that. Lux ftw.

Writing up to this point I realize two things: first, my hatred of Iris is more than enormous XD, second, violet anime does not have many "friends" and is much more lonely which makes me sad, because almost nobody really knows her

Yeah. That’s one of the things that gets me (in a bad sense) about the anime. It’s so unnecessarily lonely. So depressing. So bleak. Hardly anybody actually seems to have a deep connection with anyone, and when they do, it’s always the canon characters. The anime originals waltz in, do a few things, say some bullshit that supposedly is very deep, and boom, everything is solved. It’s so empty and so lackluster.

Violet anime does not have a solid relationship in the anime, rather she is alone, Gilbert anime, better not mention it because it would never end, Hog is an attempt at father, although in the end it is only if the boss who helped her and that's it, Erika and Iris are just coworkers, Cat is the only one who really cares about Violeta and supports her maybe not as much as the one in the novel, but she gives us a feeling of mother and daughter

I gotta disagree with that one. Even Cattleya was set aside in the movie. She was barely there and didn’t seem to miss Violet at all.

Benedicto is just a co-worker, Luculia will be like that friend you see from time to time, the real friend is Amy and it's sad that they can't see each other, that's why I don't think it's strange that Violet doesn't miss her classmates, when he leaves with PunkHoel Gil

none can replace Lux who is quite interesting and has a certain resemblance to Violeta, and I have come to feel that they are like sisters and it shows that Violeta loves her very much, the one who half reaches her (well, she does not step on her heels) is Luculia who I felt similarity in wanting to help Violeta

the ch team from the anime is a work team without depth and without development, you can't talk about them as "friends" or "Family" Hoggins and Cat would have a one night stand XD and neither has a friendly chemistry with Violet

Still not over the fact that Hodgins and Cattleya actually had sex in the anime. And Hodgins didn’t think much of it. Ugh.

the ch team of the novel are literally a Family there is a lot of chemistry between them and especially with Violet, they have a deep relationship and we can meet and sympathize with them

in conclusion, violet anime does not have many friends, she is more lonely and does not have much chemistry with the other characters as it should be, in violet novel, she has a better relationship with the characters and I can feel that she is not alone and more with Gil novel violet novel can return home and feel a family a boyfriend and is safer, violet anime, returns home and only finds her co-workers
