#hey folks ummm so here's the thing #the writers actually got better with time because they got more experience writing a show #they listened to feedback and cut down Jaune's screentime since like volume 3 onward #the main cast is mainly female characters and no the camera does not ogle them #volumes 4 onward have been focusing more on the titular team of four girls and their stories #blake and yang had a lot of focus on their individual and shared traumas which were mainly resolved by volume 6 #which gave room for a romance to develop proper throughout vols 7 & 8 and becoming official in vol 9 #weiss has been getting development scattered throughout because she only really wants to deal with her shithead father when necessary #then she got to arrest her father and see her family be emotionally better off without him #and ruby got an entire volume of her questioning herself in the face of doom and gloom because she couldn't keep being everyone's support #volume 9 was all about ruby at her lowest point and while it's not perfectly executed #the MAINEST main character who has done nothing but what she believes is right and not always succeeding being told 'you are enough' #REALLY hits home as someone who has struggled with depression and feeling like a failure despite my best efforts #the show as of recently has just been STELLAR about its women because i haven't even mentioned subplots like winter's moral struggles #or cinder fall's development and backstory as a villain #or neopolitan's own development into her own character and grieving of a loved one #and not a beach episode in sight #also a lot of the vocal hate of the show has boiled down to how MUCH it focuses on the women sooooo #rwby loves its women so much men hate it and their fan rewrites try to 'correct' the show's women #rwby loves its women so much it's embarrassing

Blake still had her semblance to use later in the fight, so I think that was just her aura flashing from taking a hard hit

Yeah, I thought I remembered her using her semblance afterwards. And I’m like 99% sure you have to have your aura to be able to use your semblance so that would mean she’s still got her aura she’s good!

@lulusoblue saw Transformers One last night so maybe that's why it's on my mind, but a random bit of trivia resurfaced in my mind this morning, if I'm remembering right, regarding a villain who was originally created for a Transformers comic but was later transplanted into the Marvel comics universe and they did this by having the villain's head appear in a cameo in the Doctor's TARDIS because Marvel UK was making comics for Transformers and Doctor Who at the time

Going on from the ask about Yang's red eyes/'beastly'-ness, what would you say Blake and Yang being/considering the other the beauty to their beast?

hmm, so on a thematic level, Blake is both Beauty and Beast. that’s the Word of God we got right from the beginning, but we first hear about Yang being the counterweight to that (seemingly in addition to her being thematically inspired by Goldilocks)

“Black the Beast descends from shadows, Yellow Beauty burns gold”

and that’s pretty much the roles they play during the first two volumes; Blake initially being isolated, kind of standoffish, she gets pretty bad tempered during volume 2, a big point with her is that she doesn’t want to be viewed like an animal because she’s a Faunus (and she wants to be seen for who she is, not what, which is why she hides that part of herself away). and Yang is the one who helps her come out of her shell, is initially put off by Blake’s initial attitude, but is able to understand her and her influence helps Blake brighten up as time goes on

and then in volume 3, the roles switched, with Blake being frightened and unsettled by what she saw Yang (who the world is going to view as a monster for what happened in the tournament), but still chooses to trust in Yang. she also rankles when Cinder implies Yang’s attack on Mercury was deliberate assault, which might map to Belle defending the Beast when the villagers hear about him in some versions. Yang is isolated and depressed, and that all follows into volume 4.

so it seems to be a rotating thing, and Blake might switch between Beauty and Beast several times over the course of the whole story, with Yang acting as counterweight to it - so the red eyes and all the imagery discussed earlier might end up being foreshadowing something on this line in future

now while we’re on this B&tB note, i just wanna point out that while Adam certainly fills the role of Gaston/Avenant for the most part as personal antagonist to the pair, in the Black Trailer, some took his role to be that of the Beast to Blake’s Beauty - though given he’s ultimately the push for Blake to cut ties and go to Beacon (where she meets her ‘Beast’), combined with his symbol, he’s very much the Rose (enchanted or not, a rose is usually a kickstart to the plot in a lot of versions of the story) in that equation

and then when we’re at Beacon, Blake first comes to Yang’s attention really when Ruby mentions their chance meeting in the courtyard, and that prompts her to introduce herself - essentially, ‘Beauty’ going to the ‘Beast’ because of the Rose - so if that was deliberate, an early hint at how Blake vacillates between both roles
