Going through Wrede's worldbuilding list for Glaucia. Even if none of this comes up, I should have ideas toward answers.

Some things I've learned, though, are:

Glaucians are very insular and focused on in-group/out-group: family, friends, any organizations, town, and country--in that order.

Even the tiniest towns have at least one free room in the tavern or over the general store or something because no one is expected to house strangers who come to town. Strangers should ask for nothing, but accept whatever they're given. They should also bring gifts or offer services to their 'hosts' (whoever feeds them, helps them find the common room, introduces them to others, etc).

For people within one of your in-groups, though, hosting is very serious and you're expected to be very generous. Known guests are expected to ask for things (the closer they are to the person, the more they're supposed to request, without ever going overboard--it is a sign of how well they know their host) and the host is expected to provide.

The primary sense is smell. Though no one has a super powerful sense of smell, the idea is that it is by smell that we recognize family as a baby and that continues as we age. Smell is also the sense of romance (if someone smells of belonging or home).

As a greeting with known people, people tap their noses. With strangers, it is an open palm and a quarter-tilt head nod.

Close friends and family members will touch noses in greeting or press their cheeks together (varies by region).

(While kissing is enjoyed, it is seen solely as a romantic and private thing).

Considering one touches everything around them, hands are seen symbolically as holding the most scent of home (vs a person's own scent). So making fists or hiding one's palms are seen as ways of shunning someone (or being more professional).

Travelers carry soap from home so that they can continue smelling of home. Running out before you're able to return home is a very sad thing and a poetic way of saying you've been traveling/away for too long.

The countries around the inland sea all speak dialects of the same language (Mirith). Eskua's dialect, though, has so many influences from the south and lands across the Aseyan Ocean, though, that it is becoming its own language.

Within Glaucia, people use a lot of slang and accents as shibboleths.

Language on the islands (Lushen & Creyv Whela) is primarily signed with the verbal component only adding tone and inflection. They borrow words for their sound rather than meaning. In Thorhiel they speak the language of their former conquerors and are all striving to find remnants of their lost tongue so that they can reconstruct and resurrect it.

....I have a lot more beside this. Including a list of livestock, greens, and such that I'll be able to use to describe food and dishes/etc.

Our baker works with barley, oats, and ground nuts rather than wheat, by the way. Wheat is not something anyone in Glaucia cultivates.

Just finished watching Crime and punishment for the first time in ages. I'll talk about it some I think

•It's definitely a slower film thats kind of boring in parts, but it has a few really great moments and charming characters. I wanna say it could've benefitted from more comedy, but that may have clashed with the dramatic tone. Maybe if Roderick displayed more cocky wit throughout

•I really feel for Sonya and her relationship with Roderick is easily my favourite explicitly canon ship in a Peter Lorre film. Now tbf that's not saying a lot since I usually find the Canon ships in these flicks range from 'ok' to kind of groan worthy, but I think Sonya and Roderick are really cute together and well acted. The way he's instantly so protective of her, the way her feelings for him conflict with her beliefs, that whole "don't take away my faith" "don't take away my unbelief" thing(which itself might be a call back to the kindness/beauty thing) I just really enjoy them

•Peter's fuzzy, lil, just-finished-shooting-mad-love head

•I love what a gross, stuck-up creep Lushen is. The spectacular scene where Roderick puts him in his place and chases him off needs no introduction(Im particularly fond of how Rod crushes his hat and then Lushen puts the crushed up hat back on as hes being thrown out). Also, I think his line about how he believes he has progressive views on marriage for wanting a poor wife because women should see their husbands as benefactors is severely underrated

•Porfiry is an enjoyable character. He's a bit like Gutman if he gave more of a facade of being on the side of the law(and was a bit more competent) and ofc the way he gets under rodericks skin is a lot of fun

•And while I'm on Lushen and Porfiry, it's funny that Peter ended up with a gross, creepy, goblin creature reputation considering so many of his films having such entertainingly repulsive slimeballs, not played by him. This particular film has at least two-three if you wanna count Tony's ex-employers husband(although I don't think we're intended to see him that way) I kinda wanna make a list ranking my favourite gross slugmen in Peter's films tbh

•I like Antonya and her dynamic with Roderick, but Tala Birell and Peter Lorre do not look at all like siblings and I think it's kinda funny

•The way Roderick drops to his knees infront of Sonya and then does the same thing later to his mother and the story she tells about the kitten he accidentally crushed, I just-UGH!! this film has some friggin good moments bruh

So all in all an OK film but not one I'd rewatch super often. I probably last watched this film back in November of last year and I dont feel like I missed out by waiting so long to watch it again. Still it has good moments, especially in the first half and it's worth watching at least once if you're a fan of Peter Lorre, particularly if you resent how much he was typecast and like the idea of seeing him as a leading man
