Bill has probably dealt with societal structures much like how our world is ending up today. From Hirsch we see that Bill likes to be above that, which leads to some reasoning behind the fissure of whatever two-dimensional plane he originated from. I have to wonder how much of that second dimension parallelled Abbott's book...

Bill has stated sex and gender is pretty much incomprehensible where he's from. I'm unclear if this means his little, stinky armpit world of terror... or his original "birthrights".... I like to surmise that it's both, though the idea of a 'female' being represented by what was essentially a pin/needle is very interesting to say the least. These pins are required by law to wiggle their sharp ends around all others: if they don't no one knows where they are, for one, on a flat plane where you need an eye or several to define lines and shading... anyone could be severely wounded or stabbed by accident. And though the thin membrane of fog in which adorned the landscape would come in handy for identifying shapes, its very hard to discern a needle from head on.
