Dragonflies are such fascinating creatures, especially during mating season when their behavior takes a dramatic turn. This one, sadly, got forced down into the algae by another dragonfly in a territorial display. Nature’s beauty often comes with fierce competition.
This dragonfly did end up making it back to the shore. It dried off its wings and lived to see another day.

THESE ARE NOT PLANTS
I was going put together a cute meme about how seaweed/kelp isn't a plant, it's macroalgae. But to do that, I wanted to show a photo of some ocean life that actually are plants. The problem is that the first two sources that come up when you do a google search for "ocean plants" include multiple kinds of algae, as well as ANEMONES AND CORALS. CORALS AND ANEMONES ARE ANIMALS.
So now, the theme of this post has changed from "Kelp isn't a plant" to:
"NONE OF THESE THINGS ARE PLANTS"

Kelp are a type of macro algae from the Protista kingdom. Protists are not animals, plants or fungi.

Anemone and corals are from the Metazoa sub-kingdom, aka they are animals. They are also not plants. No, not even the corals that host photosynthetic organisms within them - because the zooxanthellae they host are protists, like the kelp.

Omaticon 2025 Costuming with Shealyn Biran and Carrie Hollinger
Now, the plan was originally for Lead Designer Deb Scott to attend, however she had to evacuate from Los Angeles due to the fires, but she is safe, and my thoughts and prayers go to her and everyone else out there in LA.
For some more summary from today:
We started with the songchords: their bead-work and macrame intricacy is reflective of the character who made them. Their personality, clan, and community affect the designs.
Someone asked about the macro algae that was incorporated into several designs. In asking if it would decay, they answered that yes, it would. The Na'vi are more accepting of their garments having a finite lifespan. They accept the lifecycle of their world, and of their clothes which closely reflect their world.
All the clothes have to be functional/based in reality. The environmental elements are incorporated into the fashion, and they have distinct features unique to their respective clans.
Sigourney Weaver liked to use the pieces and went to them for inspiration more than others.
James Cameron has a vision he entrusted to Deb, and the glue between all the departments was Jon Landau. His a voice that is sorely missed.
Many of the costume pieces needed regular, even nightly upkeep to keep them intact.
It was very interesting/exciting to blend the disciplines of animation/VFX/costuming for live action.
Shealyn's favorite piece is Neytiri's blue feather neckpiece. It was the first render. She spoke a lot about designing it, because Jim doesn't want "a top to look like a top." The Na'vi don't have modesty standards on earth, so their fashion is more for practicality and adornment/embellishment. The feather top in particular took a lot of work to render and make work.
Carrie's favorite piece is a driftwood top Tsireya wears. It's based off a piece of driftwood Deb found on the beach, and it was inspired by something Carrie thought her daughter would like.
Aonung and Tonowari have similar loin cloth designs, reflecting that families often have their own unique patterns/inspirations.
To go off of that, Neytiri will be holding on to many of Neteyam's accessories in A3 :(
The recoms are all individually designed. Deb has connections with a military associate who has a lot of gear and design inspiration, and all the recom actors got to try on a lot of different gear for inspiration. Deb designed the camo that the recoms wear, as she wanted something different than the digi-camo from A1. The scale of the camo was also important in the designing process.
When asked for advice for young artisans Carrie said she made a lot of her connections at North Carolina's school of arts. So watch your connections! Shea said to never stop learning, and that everything can be a tool. "Keep learning, keep trying, keep playing."

Rules: (answer the questions and) tag 10 people you want to get to know better!
Last Song: Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac
Last Movie: The Dig. It was very good, and I cried.
Last Book: Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. I need the next book! I put off reading these books because I knew I’d like them, and I wanted to wait until they were all out, but I gave in. And now I need Alecto!
Last TV Show: My Lady Jane, which was fun, but every tv show I like gets canceled after one season so why do I even bother lol
Sweet, savory, or spicy: I can’t choose! Right now, I want something savory
Relationship status: my life goal is to be a mysterious and eccentric divorcée so
Last thing I searched: uh… “chaeto buy” because I need more macro algae for my saltwater tank 🐠
Looking forward to: 2029
Current obsession: Love and Deepspace. That mobile gacha otome game is doing a lot of heavy lifting in keeping me sane atm
Tagging: anyone who just read a good book and wants to recommend it to me!
Thank you for the tag @greyvvardenfell!!

VA Native Fish Hunting - 23

With Winter just behind us, I figured it would be an opportune time to pick up the fish hunting again! I went to a local area that has both freshwater and brackish access with a few cool finds!

Macro algaes are always so interesting to me but I'm bad at identifying it. I'm pretty sure this a filamentous Ulva spp. but hard to say. They range from little clumps like this to big sheets over a foot long - and according to at least one book are edible for people too.

More Ulva spp, I pulled this up from a log off shore - it seemed more to rest on it than grow from it. This batch was SO COOL partly on how much there was but also the texture. I'm super tempted to get some for an aquarium.

In the brackish section, I did a number of net dippings and only managed to catch one fish - a Mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus). This species has so much variety to them; some populations like the one this guy is from, there's an iridescent blue and black dot on the dorsal fin. A handsome fish in a subtle way.

What I did catch a lot of were shrimps! These Grass Shrimps (Palaemon spp) are super common around here. There are a few species in this state and I have a book that helps distinguish them, but I'd need better zoom in order to make that a reality.

A little easier to see their features here.

Before I left the tributary, I saw this cloud of striped fishes swimming around. My knee jerk reaction were Striped Killifish, but I've never seen them this far upstream. I did my best to catch only a small amount.

Makes more sense - Sheepshead Minnows (Cyprinidon variegatus) are freshwater to fully marine pupfish and found around this area. I have never seen them school like this, though, so that's pretty awesome.

I also tossed around a couple of minnow traps in this freshwater pond to see what I could wrangle. Turns out, not much.

One (1) female Mummichog, and...

One (1) male Mummichog. I love comparing the freshwater to brackish to saltwater populations of these fishes. Such diverse coloration!

Not aquatic but a first for me - I found a neat friend! This Wharf Roach was nice enough to pause for a few photos before being sent on their way.

Bonus pic - after the hunt I stopped by a new bait store in the area. They had a fantastic deal on American Eels! If I had room for a 3 to 4 foot long predator slash escape artist, I know where I would go buying one!

Traditional foods of Hallownest
So I just made Christmas cookies I can’t eat yet and my hunger is infinite. Hence this mess.
Boofly steaks: These are pretty much what they sound like, I feel like Booflies were essentially the cows of Hallownest. The quality of a Boofly steak is determined with how fatty it is, fattier cuts display very nice marbling. These are actually more savory in flavor than regular steaks and have a slightly more gelatinous/softer texture. Generally Boofly steaks will be served with lake-pearls(a macro algae native to the blue lake that has a salty and slightly sour flavor.
Aspid stew: this is a stew that’s made from the bottom half of and aspid(primal aspids have a much different flavor and are far less popular). Recipe is as follows
Carve up your aspid, start by removing the upper thorax and cleaning the intestines of any waste. Let the aspid drain some of its hemolyph and other juices into a jar.
Drain the acid from the aspids lower thorax, take care to entirely remove the acid glands. Store the acid in a chilled glass or ceramic jar for later.
finely mince some bitter root(a root native to the crossroads that tastes very sweet when boiled), and grind up some hyacinth flower petals, roughly a cupful of each will do.
Cut 2-3 tik-tik into fine strips(crawlids are an acceptable but inferior alternative) and lightly dust it with salt and soak in the juices from the aspid for about 35 minutes
Take the bottom half of the aspid and lightly bread the insides, once a small layer of breading is present pour in some water along with your bitter root and petals. Set this over a heat source for roughly an hour to ensure the bitterroot is thoroughly boiled.
Lightly sear the tik-tik meat and aspid meat before adding it to the stew, wait 20 minutes for it to cook.
Now that we’ve assembled most of our dish the most important part is up next. Because we chilled the aspid acid it should have taken on a gelatinous texture, mix this into any remaining aspid hemolyph and pour it into our stew. This should add a nice sharpness to the dish
Stir until the consistency is somewhere around that of a scrambled maskfly egg.
A traditional breakfast:
Scrambled maskfly eggs(they end up being close to an uncooked egg yolk in consistency) they’re generally something that is slurped up like a drink
Gruzzer bacon: this kinda tends to come in thicker slices than our bacon, it’s great when paired with a light drizzle of diluted aspid acid. Very very fatty, heavy umami flavor witha bite of saltiness.
Mashed crawlid balls: these are mashed up and thoroughly cooked crawlid meat mixed with assorted spices from greenpath and generally have a hollow center so juices from the meat can collect.
A cup of Gruzzer mead: Basically just a mix of gruzzer hemolymph and the pressed juices of a gulka. It has a very refreshing bite to it and a consistency like eggnog.
A rare delicacy: Aluba caviar, generally this is served in the shell of a shadow crawler(throughly cured and seasoned, generally for several months to ensure there’s no residual void) with a side of bioluminescent mushrooms exported from deepnest. This is generally a meal only reserved for the upper castes.
Finally: Rancid eggs can be cured and fermented into a cultural delicacy much like that one Icelandic shark dish. Suffice to say most bugs find this disgusting. The Pale king however thoroughly enjoy it, though this not public knowledge. It’s kinda his guilt pleasure along with chocolate (which is fatal or otherwise detrimental to nearly all other insects hence him being the only one eating it).
I’m definitely gonna do a part two for this once I write up some other recipes. Hopefully ones I put more thought into.

- his little bracelet is of small pieces of shells braided together with algae
- the things on top of his head were going to be sea dollars but that is straight up a living thing. or a carcass. which ohhhh no . so i'll just leave it as either those flatter shells or just a braid !
