Bulbs, Buds and Stamens/Stems

As I build up my collection of representations of the metamorphosis a flower goes through , I have now produced the likeness of each facet (bulb, bud, stamen, stem) of flower life and translated this through casting in bronze/pure silver:

BULB FORM.

I have chosen to cast dutch iris bulb to represent the archetypal flower bulb. They are small and not as dense as daffodil bulbs so casting can pick up the more intricate details of their stems and base. As a child bulbs planting was done between my mum, my younger brother and I, in our garden in Victoria, Australia. The unusual shape of the bulbs that I held in my hand stuck in my mind. The forms are a perfect example of how life 'shoots' vertically into the air, with a strong rotund support at the base for the roots to shoot from to ground the species.

BUD FORM.

I selected to cast a madonna lily bud. These remind me of my late nana on my dad's side, as she had them in her home in Hobsonvile as a child when I visited her. The form of this bud is notable. It is larger and harder than many other flower buds, it isn't round, but long, and is roomy for the flower petals to open up and push into becoming a fully formed flower.

STAMEN/STEM FORM

I selected to cast a magnolia stamen joined to the stem. Of all the macroflora, magnolia is notable for their hardy, scattered, littering seedpods and fruits. I chose to cast the fallen stamen connected to the flower stem before it had developed on the tree. This part of flower morphology reflects an instance of the reserve ovary model of flower productions , which states that trees can produce many flowers but create only some fruit. To conserve energy trees loose stamen and stems as part of the tree's natural energy conservation.

Other floral components to consider...

I have began developing interest in other more niche parts of the flower as potential for casting. I have been looking at smaller flower fragments such as pericarps.

A pericarp is a part of the flower/fruiting plant, and is most interesting to me in the form of Star Anise (which we used often in cooking in my childhood and reminds me of my mum's kitchen).

A brief description of the pictured members (though I have added a couple new members, they will be posted later)

Progenitor: This organism abruptly appeared in the fossil records of at least four hundred Nebula planets 38 million years ago. It is theorized to have been introduced unintentionally as a stowaway on the vessels of a forgotten intelligent spacefaring species and took hold due to its adaptability. Progenitor was roughly a foot long, and had a sharp beak, two large ball-eyes, and segmented osteoplates covering its back, belly, and tail, over a tetrapodal vertebrate endoskeleton. It had splayed forelimbs, and verticalized hind limbs, facilitating temporary bipedalism when carrying objects. It was a generalist omnivore. It has also been theorized to have been a kleptoparasite, a theory that is referenced in the infamous Orovoro political cartoon "And For 40 Million Years", depicting a Progenitor stealing an egg, followed by a scene of a Chime, Thill, Spickle, Tortog, Skink, and Neemon with the same hunched posture holding various things associated with political controversies of the time.

P. Marooner: This is a branch of the Progenitor tree that split only 3 million years ago, presumably from an intelligent spacefaring member of the tree that suffered a terrible cataclysm. The earliest fossils of these three species that have been found are already significantly divergent from each other, but have brain cases indicating a sapient ancestor. Genoarcheology shows that the Chimes, Thill, and Gygens were the same species 3mya, but each suffered an extreme genetic bottleneck that caused them to inbreed into subsapience before achieving genetic stability and eventually reevolving higher intelligence.

Chimes: The Chimes are tailless bipeds with lean muscular bodies and armored skulls. They have a mane of long hair that grows from the center of the top of their head down to their lower back, but modern members of the species usually trim it very short. Expats are likely to grow this mane to its full length. Males and females have a pouch on their chest in which infants can be carried while traversing the hills and macroflora of their home moon (They come from a moon orbiting the gas supergiant Oro, shared by the rest of the TMU [Three Moons Union], the Orovoro and Skinks). They have six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, helping them to climb and stride across roots and branches. They have tough skin, and powerful muscles, though they aren't nearly as strong as Tortogs. Similarly to the Tortog, Chimes grow throughout their life. Their growth slows significantly after they reach adulthood, usually reaching 5'5-6'5 between 20-30, but they slowly get taller all the way until their death, with older travelers reaching 7-8 feet tall. Those who have had the opportunity to see the Elders that lead the Chimes have described their proportions as "disturbing". The males have a pair of curling horns on their head, but the females do not. They do not give a name for their moon or species, and merely accept the names other species offer. "Chimes" is a common name that references their religious practice of meditating with a special set of wooden chimes hanging in front of them. They typically just say "My People" or "Where I am from". They are ruled by their elders, who do care deeply about the safety and comfort of their descendants, providing a society of peace, health, security, and natural beauty. However, this culture also strictly opposes dissent, controls access to outside information, and denies deviancy. Defense and foreign policy is managed by the Green Knights, a paternalistic warrior/policing caste that religiously does the dirty work of maintaining Chime perfection and security. The Chimes internationally favor a style of realpolitik that helped the TMU to remain secure and independent for centuries, but their cultural egotism is the root of many of their international problems in the more peaceful modern era, and a big reason why the TMU is falling apart.

Thill: Thill are short creatures with a sharp stiff tail, tall ears, sharp teeth, and very large hands. They have a pouch like the Chimes, indicating that it is probably a basal feature that the Gygens simply lost. They have nine fingers on each hand, with retractable claws. They have only one toe on each foot, with a gecko-like pad on the sole. The Thill that can be communicated with are mostly merchants, with mercenaries and pirates making up a chunk of what can be called their civilization. The Thill have been in a long and slow period of on-and-off recovery and recidivism after a massive capital-consolidation-cascade disaster caused by poorly managed monopolies overpowering their government during the early stages of interstellar expansion. This has led to their civilization declining into a mess of squabbling corporations, feudal states, cults, gangs, cartels, and communes, that can barely be distinguished from each other half the time.

Gygens: Gygens are large and intelligent creatures with large eyes and a larger mouth. They have two massive arms with especially large thumb and middle finger claws, and thin legs with opposed digits. They have a long neck and a muscular tail tipped with a sharp claw. They have a stiff, arched torso. Apart from lacking FTL, they were more technologically advanced than the Rarak when the Rarak first met them, and traded with the Rivarak for awhile before their planet collapsed into the War Of Wars, a world war that split into multiple civil wars within all the participating nations. They eventually stabilized and rebuilt, but are now isolationist pacifists and interact very little with the international community.
