when i was on my “cicada trip” in illinois, i found a lot of cicadas that died while molting. after 17 years underground, dying during their big transition. i found it very sad but also kind of beautifully cool? i had to draw it!
when these types of cicadas are molting, they’re white as their exoskeleton hasn’t hardened yet. their exoskeleton becomes black as it hardens

If Beeter ever had time to, Beeter would love camping, mostly solo. Their casual clothes are not fitted, so it’s awkward and tight on them too.

It's really fun watching them eat, they frequently drag food away but always end up sharing.

I thought this beetle was dead, it wasn't moving, its wings missing and its abdomen picked clean. So I took my photos and stepped away, until, after a minute, out of the corner of my eye, I saw it start crawling away.

[VIDEO AND PHOTOS TAKEN: JUNE 1ST, 2024 | Video and Image IDs: A video and four photos of a grey wood boring Buprestid beetle crawling up a relatively dirty, white metal surface. Missing its wings, the empty space showing its hollow abdomen, as well as without any motion in its far back pair of legs. /End IDs.]
Easily one of the scariest yet most fascinating things I've seen in nature! The fact that this beetle could even survive something this intense (if only for a little while before it eventually succumbs) is insane.

Had a very successful bug walk today. Happy summer! 1. A jumping spider threatening a bee, 2. A hobomok skipper, 3. A maybe-spider wasp biting a dead crab spider (she dragged it away after) 4. A katydid nymph, probably, 5. Thin-spined jumping spider (shiny red-green), 6. Linden bark-borer moth

i began preserving my dead orchid mantis cherry today, here are the notes i took:
1. thaw cherry for 10 minutes
2. pin her
3. put droplets of rubbing alcohol on her
4. let her dry
1. ive put cherry in a handmade sauna to thaw her, it consists of a very small amount of isopropyl alcohol and a splash of boiling hot water, just enough to soak up one square of kitchen paper, she is sitting on top of a small square of styrofoam so she doesn’t touch any wet surfaces, im leaving her in it for 10 minutes to guarantee shes fully thawed, im hoping the ethanol will help prevent her from rotting later on
2. ive laid her down on a larger piece of syrofoam and began pinning, it’s difficult.
emotionally its really difficult, i hate seeing her like this. i refuse to put any pins into her body. i tried, i couldnt bring myself to, i know shes gone but i cant bring myself to hurt her. i wont be stuffing her into that little vial, my baby deserves so much better
3. i pinned cherry into a position where she nearly looks alive, i put little drops of the ethanol on her to prevent rotting, shes darkened just a little but i think (i hope) its because shes wet, it really wouldn’t be noticeable if you didn’t know her,
its weird, her eyes are dark, of course they are but its so weird. no pupils. before she died i could still see her looking at me.
it felt so wrong to pin her, i did it differently to how people tend to, i refuse to have my baby stay permanently in such a scared position, i think she looks like shes standing, her head is slightly tilted up and to the side. her head was so delicate to move, i was worried id decapitate her somehow.
4. i have to leave her a week now, to dry fully, i wasnt sure where would be best to put her but i found a dry dark place, i’ll check on her occasionally to make sure nothings changed.
she wont fit in the vial i bought for her, so i decided to put all 3 of her molts in there instead, i filled it with the isopropyl alcohol and it looks beautiful
now i can at least have a part my little love by my side always

I found this dead cicada on the ground. The holes in his back might have been from birds pecking at him. I think cicadas are very pretty, but they’re hard for me to catch because they’re so fast. Some people don’t like the noise they make but I think they sound like summer.

TW: dead bug
Prosopocoilus is my favorite genus of beetle..and I imagine it's yours as well? I got this beautiful stag beetle preserved in resin a bit back, I wasn't provided with an ID but I think its some sort of prosopocoilus astacoides. Anyways, since this IS supposed to be a question, what's your favorite beetle in the genus of prosopocoilus? Mine's prosopocoilus fabricei takakuwai
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ohhh he's beautiful! Thanks for sharing! My favorite has gotta be either prosopocoilus giraffa keisukei, or prosopocoilus savagei; I had a pet of the former a good few years back now (he's the blog icon!), and I have a tattoo of the latter on the back of my arm.

This picture is from the last time I got it touched up, so the colors were pretty vivid still

PRETTY sure it's a robber fly, however I can't express how massive this one was. No images i've been able to find have really matched in size. So I'm coming to you to validate me in saying that it is a Large Bug.
its easier to see in the video, but under him is a stink bug and a bunch of gnats as well? really is a group photo. big man and stinker were totally still.
Along the Gulf of Mexico, east of the Mississippi!
It is definitely a robber fly. They can be pretty large and this one looks typically sized! But yes can confirm it is a Large Bug. RIP to their meal...
