I’ve been doing the draw-everything-June challenge (where you use a pose reference every day, and, no I’m not on time at all). Two of those turned into Mahit Dzmare and Three Seagrass! Slapped some colour on them for the vibes. Mahit is in her angular white intimidation outfit, and Three Seagrass is encountering a kauraanian Kitten.

I finished reading A Desolation Called Peace today and I really wanted to draw my favourite the characters! From left to right: Mahit, Three Seagrass, Eight Antidote, and one of the hive mind aliens.

I decided to base the aliens on bears cause their ears are described as round and fluffy (and they're my favourite animals!)

You know as much I love a lot of the popular fictional lesbians, sometimes it makes me sad that a lot of my favorites seem to have little to no popularity.

Like, I wish I saw people going feral over Sabran and Ead from Priory and how ride or die those two are for each other the moment they realize they're into each other.

I wish I saw fanart of Maud and Violet from A Restless Truth and saw people fangirling over how much they relate to Mauds autistic lesbian awakening.

I wish I saw people talking about Mahit and Three Seagrass and their complex mess of a relationship

Hell, I wish I heard people discussing lesbians I never even heard about because I love discovering all these other shows and movies and books and getting to fall in love with all these new characters.(speaking of I still really need to watch Warrior Nun)

happy yuletide reveals day! this year i'm thrilled to report that i wrote not one but two teixcalaan fics for the exchange—a desolation-era twenty cicada missing scene, and some post-canon mahit/three seagrass! please enjoy :)

also I know I'm on a AMCE kick but the obvious parallels between Teixcalaan and America keep kicking me in the gut.

the export of literature, poetry, media. Teixcalaanli epics as a parallel to Hollywood movies. the unspoken expectation that one should, of course, be fluent in the references and know the cultural context and be aware of the political shifts happening there even if one is from a sector (read: country) outside the Empire (read: the USA). the subtle and not-so-subtle mix of xenophobia and xenophilia aimed at visitors.

the idea that you're uncivilized for having missed out on "ubiquitous" experiences - "All 90s Kids Played With These Seven Forgotten Toys", "what, have you really not seen that movie? it's a classic!" "wait, you listen to American Music there? don't you people make your own?" "how have you not heard of [American band] before??"

the conflation of My Country and The World. that post about how Americans will never include their country in their address, even on international orders. thinking about how i know more about American politics than those of my own country, because those are what I see online every minute of every day.

Absolutely SCREAMING about the narrative and thematic perfection that is Three Seagrass saying—in the absolute beginning of a new romantic intimacy!!—something that deeply hurts and repulses Mahit; a microagression that not only abrades but slices straight to the heart of the whole personal and political conflict that Mahit has lived for her entire life—

AND THEN MAHIT, because she is human, and she loves Three Seagrass, and she loves the Empire that is killing her and from which she just saved herself... she "manages" to thank Three Seagrass for the compliment, "because it was sweet" at heart and she meant as a compliment.

Now that I'm slowly recovering (or at least trying to recover) from A Desolation Called Peace (what do you mean, it's a DUOLOGY?!), can I talk about how much Three Seagrass is such a mood? Our girl spent at most one week with Mahit in the first book, and after that she cannot even stand a few months at her desk job before she randomly decides to take an assignment at the edge of the Empire just so she can make a stop in Lsel and see her girl-who-isn't-her-girl. Professional simp behaviour, I can only respect that.

Not that Mahit is much better, Ma'am "yes you've been flirting with your cultural liaison since day one".

I'm still kinda mad about ADCP's ending, in most part because so much could still be said about those characters, but let's be real. I don't think that LDR / "I'd write back. All the time." will last long before one of them does something ridiculously gay like uhauling or whatever the space lesbians do.

three seagrass throws caution to the political wind and takes an extremely dangerous mission AND travels across the universe AND makes an unsanctioned stop on her already-sort-of-illegal trip AND basically makes up a reason to take mahit with her just because she misses her so much but STILL has not questioned her xenophobia. girl i love you but you gotta examine your privilege here
