So this piece is the “Pemaquid at Noon” and it is a 12 x 20. I like that shape canvas because it allows a little bit more of the composition fitting with the broad spaces that the sea provides. I’d actually like to do a very large pieces with the ocean vista. But one has to have a client first so I’m working on it. So yesterday I painted out on Pemaquid Point LIVE with the Plein Air Painters of Maine. I was a little late because I had a zoom meeting in the morning. I did a live session and painted a piece that resulted. They won’t let me post it to the IGTV but I’ll post it later today on my website. I shortened it down to 28 mins 🤷‍♀️ I often say that painting is like meditation you look at the surface then you look deeper than you look deeper then you look deeper and you get a greater understanding as you go. And not everybody is at the same level and that’s OK. It’s also a metaphor for life in general. First you look at the big picture and you can see all of the ocean and all of the sky and the rocks and then you break it down into smaller and smaller parts. Color and line and the composition and the way you want to focus your attention. And then you start working on the niggly details which would be like the tasks you would probably have in your day-to-day life but if you concentrate solely on the little niggly details you miss the big picture. Notes on the day: The parking lot was completely full, people were having picnic lunches and sitting on the rocks and watching the ocean. I slipped in between a couple of other artists who were already painting on the rocks. I didn’t interrupt them. It was a beautiful day as you can see and perfect weather couldn’t have asked for better. Light breeze and Cool air and yet warm enough that I didn’t have to wear my jacket. A lot of people milling around. I will put up this piece on Pemaquid at Noon when is finished and put it in the AR viewer on my site. WIP I’m thinking this one is just about done. I’m going to work on it some more for the background chop which is incredibly complicated. - I will put the finished piece up on my site available for sale, once it’s completed it’s a 24 x 36 oil on stretched linen canvas. Framing it in a shadow box frame. If you live in #MidcoastMaine I can bring it out to your house for you to see, since my studio really isn’t going to be open until May. The first half of the little video is about the rocks and you can see as I progress that I was carried away so then I pulled it back and simplified the rocks at the end and the second half is about the background chop and then I did some tweaking also on the foreground water. So I have some more work to do on the background water and but the foreground and the rocks are pretty much done to my satisfaction - then moving on to the next piece which I’m all a tingle to start .
