Contactless Community #11 i hope the last.... The gentleman took my hand, but then he squeezed just past my elbow, past my wrist to check if I had muscle. And he goes, no, you're not strong enough for this industry. That is why I was so passionate about wanting to create a space for women so that they can learn the trade. I wanted a space that I could feel comfortable teaching women, but also just give them the opportunity to find themselves, because working with your hands just kind of invigorates and opens up something in a person that is so different from what we do day to day. The satisfaction to like touch something with your hands, and once your’e finished, you say, wow, I actually created a pair of shoes for someone to walk in, I repaired this area in a bag that we thought was garbage. No pun intended all, but it truly saved my soul. On Thursday before the shutdown, there was just this weird emotion out in the world. It was extremely slow that day, we made $20 and I was like, whoa, this has never happened in the eight years. Once, the shock and the the truth all kind of settled in but now i am able to just sit, reflect and think out of the box. This is just like a new business. When i stared i had $7.00 in the bank. I can do it again. It's an exciting time, and I understand that a lot of people can’t allow themselves to be in that mindset yet because they are still sort of going through the stages of what they need to go though. The other day, just to kind of reflect back upon and see how far we have come, I looked at our i-Pad on where we log all of our repairs, and for both locations we had filled up to 20,000 repair tickets. I cannot believe that like after eight years we accomplished that much. Racial and ethnic equity in computer science and engineering fields continues to be a challenge. There is a low participation of underrepresented minorities in the computer science and engineering graduate programs, as well as the workforce. African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans earned fewer than 8 % of computer science and engineering degrees. Research shows that there are a plethora of strategies can be used for increasing participation of both women and underrepresented minorities. (Intel Report MakeHers, 2014).
