This article is from 2022, but it came up in the context of Palestine:
Tumblr media
Here are some striking passages, relevant to all colonial aftermaths but certainly also to the forms we see Zionist reaction taking at the moment:
Over the decade I lived in South Africa, I became fascinated by this white minority [i.e. the whole white population post-apartheid as a minority in the country], particularly its members who considered themselves progressive. They reminded me of my liberal peers in America, who had an apparently self-assured enthusiasm about the coming of a so-called majority-minority nation. As with white South Africans who had celebrated the end of apartheid, their enthusiasm often belied, just beneath the surface, a striking degree of fear, bewilderment, disillusionment, and dread.
[...]
Yet these progressives’ response to the end of apartheid was ambivalent. Contemplating South Africa after apartheid, an Economist correspondent observed that “the lives of many whites exude sadness.” The phenomenon perplexed him. In so many ways, white life remained more or less untouched, or had even improved. Despite apartheid’s horrors—and the regime’s violence against those who worked to dismantle it—the ANC encouraged an attitude of forgiveness. It left statues of Afrikaner heroes standing and helped institute the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which granted amnesty to some perpetrators of apartheid-era political crimes.
But as time wore on, even wealthy white South Africans began to radiate a degree of fear and frustration that did not match any simple economic analysis of their situation. A startling number of formerly anti-apartheid white people began to voice bitter criticisms of post-apartheid society. An Afrikaner poet who did prison time under apartheid for aiding the Black-liberation cause wrote an essay denouncing the new Black-led country as “a sewer of betrayed expectations and thievery, fear and unbridled greed.”
What accounted for this disillusionment? Many white South Africans told me that Black forgiveness felt like a slap on the face. By not acting toward you as you acted toward us, we’re showing you up, white South Africans seemed to hear. You’ll owe us a debt of gratitude forever.
The article goes on to discuss:
"Mau Mau anxiety," or the fear among whites of violent repercussions, and how this shows up in reported vs confirmed crime stats - possibly to the point of false memories of home invasion
A sense of irrelevance and alienation among this white population, leading to another anxiety: "do we still belong here?"
The sublimation of this anxiety into self-identification as a marginalized minority group, featuring such incredible statements as "I wanted to fight for Afrikaners, but I came to think of myself as a ‘liberal internationalist,’ not a white racist...I found such inspiration from the struggles of the Catalonians and the Basques. Even Tibet" and "[Martin Luther] King [Jr.] also fought for a people without much political representation … That’s why I consider him one of my most important forebears and heroes,” from a self-declared liberal environmentalist who also thinks Afrikaaners should take back government control because they are "naturally good" at governance
Some discussion of the dynamics underlying these reactions, particularly the fact that "admitting past sins seem[ed] to become harder even as they receded into history," and US parallels
And finally, in closing:
The Afrikaner journalist Rian Malan, who opposed apartheid, has written that, by most measures, its aftermath went better than almost any white person could have imagined. But, as with most white progressives, his experience of post-1994 South Africa has been complicated. [...]
He just couldn’t forgive Black people for forgiving him. Paradoxically, being left undisturbed served as an ever-present reminder of his guilt, of how wrongly he had treated his maid and other Black people under apartheid. “The Bible was right about a thing or two,” he wrote. “It is infinitely worse to receive than to give, especially if … the gift is mercy.”

No Rules Legacy Update
After 10 generations, multiple moves, and a very robust story progression, my legacy save is well and truly fubar. When I sent Dylan to Egypt, I got the same vendor notification over and over. In France, I saw the exact same NPC sim twice. The game is lagging, even after merging cc and resetting the town, which it normally does not do. It takes Dylan at least 30 sim minutes to change clothes, go to work, get in the shower, or go to bed. And sometimes the sims have a weird melted look before fully rendering.
I've tried googling some performance tricks, but think the save is too broken to fix. The most painful part, really, is that I will likely have to sacrifice all the keepsakes. I'm especially sad to lose nine generations of family photos and all the bottles of nectar that have been aging since Noelle's generation.
UPDATE: I put everything in Dylan's personal inventory before saving him to the library, so the only family heirlooms that were lost were a couple of festival photos, which I don't mind losing.
I've managed to save the Malan Hall dormies to the library, along with my current Dylan, so they can still be friends in a fresh save. I'm not bringing his siblings, so we'll just have to imagine them happy and thriving in Isla Paradiso. And even though Sims 3 mermaids aren't immortal, we're going to pretend they are, so Mara and Mason will live happily forever, together under the sea.
It's also likely that the apartment renovation storyline will fall to the wayside because the routing in St. Claire is kind of a nightmare, and I'm kind of in love with this house by @theplumdot which sits on the lot where Keahi lived in Sunlit Tides. I feel like it's kind of a full circle for the legacy for Dylan to live there with (HOPEFULLY, DYLAN) Zoya and their family since that's where Nara was born.
UPDATE: I realized that if I move them to Sunlit Tides, I will have to annihilate the entire population and let SP repopulate because there are so many people who have appeared in earlier generations. So, I'm trying a fresh St. Claire.
TL;DR: Game is borked, starting a fresh save with my legacy characters.

Your soul is finally free,
Oh how dadi is full of glee,
You meant the world to me,
Why did you flee,
You are not gone,
For you always shone,
Your spirit will forever loom,
You lit every room,
Your presence eternally eastend,
You were always everyones friend,
Generous beyond compare,
I will forever remember you in prayer,
From Jalandhar to London,
Until you were done,
Born to Ammar,
God was your planner,
Beginnings in the dhaliwal bet,
You thought life was all set,
Named a leader Sardar,
You decided you go far,
You were meant to return in 2 years,
Leaving your mum Malan in tears,
But your heart was here,
You were full of cheer,
Painstakingly grafting in the factories,
I will forever miss your stories,
Your suit forever dazzles,
Reading those urdu gazzles,
Your crown your pug,
Always giving us a hug,
Proud to be a jutt,
Kirpan ready to cut,
Proud to be sikh,
You reached your peak,
Thank you for nurturing me,
Fufiling everyones plea,
You gave us love,
Now fly free as a dove,
Smile from above,
As you passed life’s test,
Thank you for giving us the best,
Now you can rest❤️

"Yes, you love life. You have to, since that's all you believe in." Malan seated himself heavily in a cretonne-covered easy chair, and suddenly a look of inexpressible melancholy came over his face.
"You're right,' said Cormery. "I've loved life, I'm hungry for it. At the same time, life seems horrible to me, it seems inaccessible. That is why I am a believer, out of skepticism. Yes, I want to believe, I want to live, forever." Cormery fell silent.
"At sixty-five, every year is a stay of execution," Malan said. "I would like to die in peace, and dying frightens me. I have accomplished nothing."
"There are people who vindicate the world, who help others live just by their presence."
Albert Camus, The First Man (p. 35)

Blease... tell us more about paradiso your characters are absolutely gorgeous and I need to know who they are and what they do with their lives and how they know each other... thank you....
Tumblr media
from left to right we have
Sam
Sala Lance Du Lain Mala
Dein Efi Maliria Sa Lamen
Mal Lulu Ceol Fa Rah
Ghel Ja-Min Mel Falah
AEL
the main story:
the Paradiso is an intergalactic cruise liner that travels to a paradise like destination only accessible to the cruise liner, and only the wealthiest and noble can board. the ship runs on a energy source called Malan, an energy only produced by beings called celestials. They are beautiful strong beings, and can potentially live forever. they all have a form of albinism, white hair, long pointed ears, and bright red eyes. the ship houses 4 celestials that were basically born on the ship and groomed to one day power it. all the celestials have a deep bond and consider themselves to be siblings. Sam is a cop from Georgia and while hes off duty one night theres a distress call from a woman near the edge of town and hes instructed to reapond as he was the only one in the area. he arrives on the scene to find two masked strangely dressed individuals attempting to kidnap the distress caller. he tries to help, fist fighting the strangers to get them away form the women and as she runs off Sam is tazed and knocked out, coming to hours later in a strange room with no windows, putting together thatd theyd kidnapped him instead. another strangely dressed person telling him to follow them as they lead him out of the room and out into and extremely huge and high class looking lobby of some sort and out the windows reveal him to be in space and he panics, trying to make a break for it until 2 more masked men apprehend him, leading him back to his guide and they continue their journey to private looking corridor with four doors along the walls. they open the 2nd door and lead him inside before closing the door and trapping him in a large extravagant looking bedroom. Here he meets Sala Lance Du Lain Mala, a beatiful man with pale skin and white hair, elongated ears and bright red eyes, greeting him casually as he lounged on the wide ornate bed. he tells sam his name before telling him to call him Lain and instructs Sam that hes here to entertain him simply saying that "humans are fun". Sam is understandably confused by this peraon referring to him as human not fully understanding that Lain is not human. Sam refuses to do anything, both intriguing and disappointing Lain. Theu talk for some time, Lain becoming very attached to Sam for playing hard to get. eventually hes allowed to explore the ship, meeting the captain and the other celestials. sam is brought to Lains room again and again so they can just talk, Lain loving listening about earth and hearing Sam tell him stories hed come up with in the past.
the characters:
Sam Jones is a 34 year old man who aspired to be a writer like his mother, but wasnt very successful and wound up joining the police force like his father. hes extremely unhappy and his ex-wife kicked him out and kept his 2 sons which he currently only has weekend visitation with until his finds himself a new place while he currently lives out of a motel room. Hes dutiful and kind, but has a hard time really connecting with people, which ends up destroying most of his relationships which is what eventually ended his marriage. He still writes, working on a book but has little hope of ever publishing, and does it more as a hobby than anything else. Hes 5'11 and bisexual, he has a bit of a drinking problem that hes trying to break free from and while on board the Paradiso ends up becoming friends with the celestials and eventually in love with Lain
Sala Lance Du Lain Mala is a celestial who commonly goes by the nickname Lain. Hes one of the power sources that feul the Paradiso, though he probably spends the least amount of time in the charging station. Hes selfish and aloof, spending a lot of time having people entertain him personally in a multitude of ways, many of his entertainers in love with him, and willing to do anything to get in his good graces. hes self entitled and kinda spoiled, he has his own personal hookah lounge that he spends a lot of time in with the other celestials, rarely letting anyone else in. hes pansexual and 5'7", eventually falling in love with Sam does makes efforts to win him over.
Dein Efi Maliria Sa Lamen is another celestial who goes by the nickname Mali. she spends an average time in the charging chamber and doesnt like to flaunt or abuse her power. she kind and caring, rejecting the love letters she gets one by one to gently let down her potential suitors. She spends a lot of time reading and star gazing. she also likes designing outfits for herself and the other celestials, nearly all their clothing having been design by Mali. shes trans and a lesbian and has no interest in starting a relationship.
Mal Lulu Ceol Fa Rah who goes by the nickname Lulu, is another celestial and also doesnt spend a lot of time in the charging station. she can be kinda cruel, and likes messing with and manipulating people, breaking hearts and treating her admirers like pieces of a game. she spends a lot of time with Lain, both having similar tastes and like to judge others outfits for fun. she likes stringing people along just to reject them in the end, is selfish and arrogant, and has no personal bonds outside of the other celestials, until Sam comes along and she ends up falling for him. shes bisexual and 5'7"
Ghel Ja-Min Mel Falah who goes by Ja-min, spends the most time in the charging station, wanting to stay close to AEL as they have a big crush on her. They are responsible and calm, quick witted and intelligent, commonly found researching just what it is celestials like them really are. like the other celestials they have plenty of admirers, not paying them any mind as they only have eyes for AEL. they spend a lot of time reading with Mali, the two simply enjoying eachothers company. Ja-Min is 5'7", nonbinary, and asexual
AEL is the captain of the Paradiso, she is a cyborg, and experimental subject for cybernetic substitution. she goes by AEL because it was the name of the program called Artificial Enhanced Living. Not many know her real name. She is very serious about her job, and expects the best from her crew and staff. Shes stern and professional, though she does have a soft spot for the celestials, having known them their entire lives. shes bisexual and stands at 6'0".

Goodbye Ted Dexter, Free Spirit, Cricket Thinker, Renaissance Man
The England and Sussex captain had aura, flair, majestic batting, and impossible glamour - and that was just on the field
— Mark Nicholas | 27 August, 2021
Tumblr media
Ted Dexter batting in a ring of close-in fielders in Sydney, January 1963 Getty Images
I don't know when the Ted Dexter affectation started but I can guess. The last thing my father did with me before he died so young was to take me to see the 1968 Gillette Cup final at Lord's. This was during Ted's short comeback and when the great man strode to the wicket, I leapt about in excitement, cheering his name for all I was worth. He didn't get many but no matter, I had seen him live. That evening Dad bowled to me in the garden as I imitated every Dexter mannerism and stroke I had seen just a few hours before.
"There is about Dexter, when he chooses to face fast bowling with determination, a sort of air of command that lifts him above ordinary players. He seems to find time to play the fastest bowling and still retain dignity, something near majesty, as he does it." — John Arlott
I fell for the aura, and for the flair in those back-foot assaults on fast bowlers. Not for a minute do I think I saw the 70 in 75 balls against Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith at Lord's in 1963 but I feel as if I did - the power, the poise, the sheer gall of it. Nothing, not even the Beatles, could drag me from the television screen when he walked to the wicket, seemingly changing the picture from black-and-white to glorious technicolor as he took guard. Frankly, much of the Test cricket of the time was pretty dull but there was a frisson, an expectation, with Ted, just as there is when Ben Stokes is on his way today. It was all too brief, he had retired for good before I started proper school.
The West Indians of the day - Conrad Hunte, Garry Sobers, Wes Hall - thought that innings the best played against them by anybody, though Dexter himself would modestly say it was just one of those days where everything came together and the bat swung freely in just about the right arc. He was well miffed to be given out lbw, however, insisting later that the DRS would have saved him. Who knows how many careers might have been changed by the sliding doors of the DRS.
The word majesty sits well with Dexter's batting, primarily because of the way in which he attacked through the off side off his back foot. This is a stroke so difficult to master that more prosaic batters choose to ignore it. It is no great surprise that Dexter thought Gordon Greenidge and Martin Crowe the two most technically correct right-hand players that he saw, citing their ability to stay sideways-on and to play the ball alongside their body as the prime reason for the accolade.
He was a huge fan of Joe Root and became near apoplectic during the England captain's relatively lean spell a while ago, when he became square-on to the bowler and was playing in front of his body. This niggled so much that he wrote to Root without mincing his words. Though at first put out, Root soon saw the kindness in a man of Dexter's age and knowledge who bothered to write, and therefore returned an email of thanks with the observation that he took the point. Who knows to what degree? It is enough to say that this year Root has batted about as well as any man could have done, and no one has enjoyed each of these innings in Sri Lanka, India, and now at home as much as Dexter.
Tumblr media
One final appeal: Dexter (fourth from left) watches as umpire Charlie Elliot gives John Inverarity out off Derek Underwood, The Oval, 1968 Getty Images
For the best part of a year now, Ted has been banging on about Dawid Malan: simply couldn't understand why England didn't pick him to bat at three. He cited the hundred in Perth in 2017 and this year's big scores for Yorkshire before predicting near-certain success with the method that brought those runs. It is sad, indeed, that he didn't live to see the fulfillment of his prophecy in Malan's fine innings yesterday. He liked the look of James Vince and Zak Crawley too, cricketers who stand tall and play with freedom. He got a lot right, this man of Radley, Cambridge, Sussex and England.
Tall himself, strong, handsome and impossibly glamorous, Edward Ralph Dexter caught everyone's eye. With the golden Susan Longfield on his arm, they cut quite a dash and cared little for the sniping that came from those less blessed. The enigma in him - and how! - was often confused with indifference, and though cricket has remained his other great love, it was never the be-all and end-all for him - a fact that made his appearances all the more cherished and his company all the more engaging. It is remarkable to think that he first retired as far back as 1965, before returning briefly in 1968 to make a double-hundred at Hastings against Kent and be immediately recalled to the England team for the Ashes. In the brilliant photograph (above) of the moment when Derek Underwood claims the final wicket at The Oval, Ted is caught spinning to appeal for lbw with a face that smacks of a lifelong instinct for competition and achievement.
"Ted was a man of moods, often caught up in theories, keen when the action was hot, seemingly uninterested when the game was dull... a big-time player, one who responded to atmosphere, liked action and enjoyed the chase and gamble. Maybe this was the reason he was drawn to horse racing so that a dull day stalking the covers might be enlivened for him by thoughts of how his money was faring on the 3:15 at Ascot or Goodwood." — John Snow
Tumblr media
Richie Benaud and Dexter in Sydney during the 1963-64 Ashes Frank Albert Charles Burke / Fairfax Media/Getty Images
And Snow would know for he was not the type to rise above those grey days of county cricket when the stakes were so low. Snow and Dexter, my first heroes, along with Jimmy Greaves and George Best, Muhammad Ali, the Beatles and the Stones - all of them important figures at 29 Queensdale Road, where the young Nicholas grew up with vinyl records and cared-for willow, narrow-grained and well-oiled for the garden Test matches that England forever won.
Much of the 1960s were about rebellion, revolution even, in response to the age of austerity. After the long and mainly drab post-war years, the young simply broke free and changed pretty much anything they could get their hands on. Music and fashion led the way, leaving sport's establishment to stutter in their wake. Only a few precious players could transcend the inertia, using both their talent and expression to delight the crowds and influence the young. Cricket was my thing, Dexter and Snow were the wind beneath my wings.
In Snow there truly was rebellion, against authority and the system it supported. This was not so in Dexter's case, though his free spirit and somewhat cavalier approach to responsibility gave the impression of one determined to ruffle feathers. From the outset he adored sport, worked harder than some might think at his books, and embraced diversions with the enthusiasm of a man who had more to do than could ever be done.
In many ways Ted was a contradiction: at once a conformist, as shaped by the early years of his life at home and school, and a modernist, whose lateral thinking did much to reform the structure of English cricket during his time as chairman of selectors. Richie Benaud observed that Ted's imagination and drive "will be of great benefit to English cricket in years to come. Equally, I'm in no doubt that others will take the credit for it." The rebellion in Ted was hardly radicalised but he loved to challenge conservative thinking, to take risks and to invest in his life as an adventure. Both on and off the field, this made for a terrific watch.

The best of Ted: Dexter on his way to 70 against Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith at Lord's, June 1963 PA Photos
He thought the Hundred a good wheeze and admitted he would rather like to have played it himself. He was, of course, the original thinker about one-day cricket, supporting its conception as early as the late 1950s and then leading Sussex to the first two 60-over titles at Lord's in the Gillette Cup. He paid close attention to the tactics and convinced his men that following them to the letter would do the trick. Which it did. He pushed for four-day county matches 27 years before they were incorporated and he founded the idea of central contracts for England players long before other teams caught the bug.
He was proud of his part in the development of the spirit of cricket, applying golf's moral high ground to the game that made his name. Through his own PR agency, he became a pioneer in cricket's digital-technology revolution by inventing the system of Test match rankings that first announced itself under the banner of Deloitte and is now the ICC international rankings.
On a Zoom call a couple of months back, with tongue firmly in cheek, he said, "Having a rather high opinion of myself, I can safely say that had the rankings been in place sometime around the mid part of the 1963 summer, I would have been the No. 1-rated batsman in the world." We had special guests on these calls - Mike Atherton, Michael Vaughan, Ed Smith, Robin Marlar, Sir Tim Rice and more - all keen to share a drink, chew the cud and have a laugh with the game's most original and forward-thinking mind.

We cannot jump past golf without mentioning the game at the Australian Golf Club in Sydney when Ted partnered Norman Von Nida against Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. So enamoured of Ted's golf were they that Nicklaus suggested Ted follow him back to the USA for a crack at the tour. Player has long said that Ted was the best amateur ball-striker he ever saw and Von Nida just thanked him for securing the one-up triumph that day. Eighteen months ago Player told me that in their one head to head with each other, Ted beat him up the last at Sunningdale, receiving only four shots. "Little so-and-so," said Ted, "we played level!" They were due for a game last summer but Covid stood firmly between them. The last time I played with Ted, two summers ago now, he beat his age, shooting 83 round the Old Course at Sunningdale without breaking a sweat.
This was a man of Jaguar cars, Norton motorbikes, greyhounds, race horses and an Aztec light airplane that, in 1970, he piloted to Australia with his young family beside him, to cover the Ashes as a journalist. They flew 12,000 miles and made about two dozen stops at British military bases along the way.
Ted married the very beautiful Susan soon after returning from Australia and New Zealand in the spring of 1959. How she is hurting today. So too Genevieve, Tom and the grandchildren.
There was an eccentricity in him that was occasionally misunderstood but otherwise immensely appealing and it is with that in mind, that I turn to the man himself for the final word. It comes from his blog, which is a splendid read and will remain a platform for the family to share their thoughts about this husband, father and grandfather who brought us so much joy.

Dexter and Frank Worrell at a BBC interview with Peter West, August 1963 Harry Todd / Fox Photos/Getty Images
It was in my last term at Radley College when I had a hard game of rackets in the morning, scored 3 tries with two conversions for the 1st XV in the afternoon, was heard listening to operatic voices in the early evening, before repairing to the Grand Piano in the Mansion and knocking off a couple of Chopin preludes. "Quite the Renaissance man it seems" said my Social Tutor and I admit I liked the sound of it, if not quite knowing what it meant.
The Encyclopaedia Brittanica description of Renaissance man (or polymath) is as follows: one who seeks to develop skills in all areas of knowledge, in physical development and social accomplishment and in the arts. A point is made that you do not need to excel at any one activity. It is enough to tackle it seriously and see how far you get. I like the physical development bit obviously and I feel the social accomplishment bit is covered by my willingness to take on responsibilities all my life. Perhaps the arts bit is a bit shaky but a love for music, and particularly opera, and love of language - being fairly fluent in French, Italian, rudimentary German and Spanish - may be some modest qualifications."
Some different cat, huh. What a man. What a cricketer. Goodbye Ted, and thank you.

Tyler Perry Dedicates Sound Stage To Diahann Carroll At His Studios' Star-Studded Grand Opening + Beyonce Flaunts Her Curves In Sparkly Lemon Colored Gown
Tumblr media
Tyler Perry celebrated the grand opening of his Tyler Perry Studios and all the YBF stars aligned for the gala. Deets on Tyler dedicating a sound studio to the late Diahann Carroll,  Beyonce serving up fierce lemonade realness, plus all the celebs who hit the carpet inside…
Tumblr media
Yesterday, Tyler Perry celebrated the opening of his Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, which is the first black-owned major film studio. Yep. Tyler is making some real boss moves in the industry and several of your faves came out to show him support.
The actor/director/writer unveiled his state-of-the-art Tyler Perry Studios, which sit on 330-acres. The mega studio has already hosted big projects like his MADEA films along with AMC’s “Walking Dead” and Marvel’s blockbuster hit Black Panther. It’s considered one of the largest production studios in the country with 12 soundstages, 40 buildings on-site that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and more than 200 acres of green space.
One of those soundstages has been dedicated to legendary actress Diahann Carroll, who passed away on Friday following a long bout with cancer. Tyler hopped on Instagram to pay tribute to the “Julia” actress, sharing how he had previously planned to pay tribute to the iconic actress before her passing.
”In less than 24 hours I was scheduled to dedicate a sound stage at my new studio to Diahann Carroll,” he wrote. “As I sat reviewing her video tribute, I got a request to call her daughter when she told me of her Mother’s passing. I did what I could to try and comfort her in this difficult time, but I know no words could soothe, however I prayed that it would."
He said Stage 5 in Tyler Perry Studios will forever hold the legacy Diahann Carroll left behind.
”I know you will live on in our hearts, but I’m so glad to know that your name will live on at Stage 5 at Tyler Perry Studios. Thank you for letting me honor you, and thank you for lending your legend to my studio to inspire generations to come. Rest well, as I know you are traveling to heaven on a first class cloud. You wouldn’t have had it any other way. God bless you. Love to your family.”

In less than 24 hours I was scheduled to dedicate a sound stage at my new studio to Diahann Carroll. As I sat reviewing her video tribute, I got a request to call her daughter when she told me of her Mother’s passing. I did what I could to try and comfort her in this difficult time, but I know no words could soothe, however I prayed that it would. I hung up the phone and sat back for a moment and was about to be overcome with sadness. Just as that was about to happen, I received a wave of gratitude. I was so thankful in my soul because I got to be on the planet at the same time as this barrier breaking, race shattering, mythical beauty, that will forever be Diahann Carroll. Thank you Ms. Carroll for how you showed the world that black people are special, strong, beautiful and powerful. I know you will live on in our hearts, but I’m so glad to know that your name will live on at Stage 5 at Tyler Perry Studios. Thank you for letting me honor you, and thank you for lending your legend to my studio to inspire generations to come. Rest well, as I know you are traveling to heaven on a first class cloud. You wouldn’t have had it any other way. God bless you. Love to your family.

Last year @tylerperry came on #Bevelations @radioandysxm & we had an absolute blast (as we always do)! He told me about the magnificent studio he was building, he was so proud that parts of #BlackPanther were filmed there! He was most proud that a Black man from NOLA now owned one of the largest film studios in the world & it was housed on former Confederate land! He promised me that when the studio opened I would be invited & viola had a seat (a really prime one) at the table! Last night was one of the highlights of my year, it was a divine balm to what is ailing many of us Black folk in the face of a racist regime! As @ledisi so beautifully sang last night (with no rehearsal) #WeRiseUp

Two Conventions, Two Cities
Sometimes we all need a kick up the backside to get back on track. I had lost my creative ways for a bit -- caught up in the maelstrom of family life and smoothing the path for other’s journeys to creative expression. Fortunately, I knew exactly what I was doing when I booked myself on a double sff convention extravaganza, starting with Worldcon in Dublin, two days to catch my breath at a beautiful cabin on Strangford Lough, NI, before ending up at Eurocon in Belfast.
The beauty of these two conventions is that you are surrounded by inspiration and encouragement from start to finish. The sff community are ravenous for new material and will go out of their way to point you in any direction that will eventually feed their literary hunger. They are wise and they are patient.
This year, I gathered my courage around me and volunteered to participate on a couple of panels. My speculative fiction novel may only just be resurfacing as a regular visitor to my desk, but it never hurts to pave the way for recognition by your future readership. At Worldcon, I had lots of fun taking part in the ‘Sexy Beasts -- Non-human pairings in sff romance and erotica’ panel. Who knew that all those kidnappings in Enid Blyton books had such a formative effect on so many young minds? At Eurocon, I found myself in illustrious company on the ‘Future of FanAc’ panel. It was humbling to hear so many stories about the origins of the community that has given me so much support over the years, both personally and professionally.
For the first time, I was at these conventions with my writer’s hat on. I don’t know why it never occurred to me, at previous conventions, to introduce myself as a writer. I am published. I have been paid on a regular basis for the words I have written. Yet, I shy away from saying, ‘I am a writer.’ Maybe, it is because I am not yet the writer I want to be? Anyway, as a Writer, I attended panels led by commissioning editors, learnt about what agents are looking for, studied the business of writing, discovered the joy of kaffeeklatsches where I got to meet Robert S Malan (Author and Editor at Luna Press Publishing), John Berlyne (Literary Agent at Zeno Agency Ltd), Gillian Redfearn (Deputy Publisher at Gollancz) and Ellen Datlow (Fiction Editor), sneaked an invite to the Titan publishing party and soaked up the inspirational emotion that flooded this year’s Hugo Awards. I did all of this in the weird and wonderful company of new and old friends who I may not see again for many years but will remain my friends forever.
Now, I’m home and my desk is covered in To-Do Lists that are actually starting to fill up with ticked items. I have so much that I want to do, and I wake up every day excited, looking forward to ticking off more of those items. I am no longer an apologetic writer. I am a writer with a plan, a plan that is taking me steadily towards being the writer I want to be.
You can find a more business-like entry on the many ways budding authors can benefit from attending conventions here.

The Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week -- The Society, Wine Country
Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of May 10-May 16.
This is a very well-rounded week on Netflix. We've got a star-studded comedy movie (Wine Country), a suspenseful teen thriller series (The Society), the final season of a well-liked anthology series (Easy), some anime, some kid stuff, some foreign cinema, and some documentaries, and not too much of any one thing. Sometimes it's like "why do we need three murder documentaries this week," you know? Nothing this week is going to be a big hit, except mayyybe The Society, but nothing is especially bad, which isn't always the case. Steady as she goes, Netflix!
If you're looking for even more hand-picked recommendations, click over to our Watch This Now! page.
(All titles are out Friday, May 10, unless otherwise specified.)
The Biggest Releases
The Society, Season 1 Netflix's latest TV-MA YA offering is its best one yet, an inspired Lord of the Flies riff about the teenagers of a wealthy New England town that gets mysteriously cut off from the world. "No parents, no school, no rules" sounds like fun, right? Think again! Things Chinua Achebe real fast — and that's the kind of reference these kids would make, because they're all hilariously well-read. This is a show where ominous graffiti in Romanized Hebrew appears on a wall and a jock is like, "Oh, that's from the Book of Daniel. It means you've been judged and found wanting." It's a lot of fun.
Wine Country Amy Poehler is making her directorial debut with this feel-good comedy about a group of longtime friends taking a trip to Napa to celebrate a 50th birthday. The cast includes Poehler's own longtime friends and fellow Saturday Night Live alumni Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Emily Spivey, and Tina Fey. In addition to directing, Poehler also stars, executive-produces, and wrote the story with Spivey and Liz Cackowski (who used to write for, you guessed it, Saturday Night Live). (Trailer)
Everything Else
Easy, Season 3 Writer-director Joe Swanberg's low-key anthology series is back for a third and final season of charming little tales of the love, sex, and app lives of a gaggle of Chicagoans. Returning faves include Jake Johnson, Aya Cash, Dave Franco, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, and Elizabeth Reaser, along with new faces like Sophia Bush and John Gallagher Jr. Is this the final sigh of mumblecore? Maybe!
Dry Martina I feel like this came out already? Or maybe Netflix puts out so many similar movies that I can't keep track of them all. Anyway, this is a sexy Chilean dramedy about a former teen pop star rediscovering her libido and finding out about who she is in the process. Lots of talk about "concha" in the trailer. (Trailer)
Gente que viene y bah (In Family I Trust) This is a Spanish movie about an architect whose boyfriend cheats on her with a news anchor and everyone finds out so she returns to the small town where she's from and gets her groove back with the help of her family and the local hot dude. You've seen this one before. (Trailer)
Harvey Girls Forever!, Season 2 The animated series formerly known as Harvey Street Kids is back for another season of after-school adventures on the street where every day feels like Saturday. Fun fact: The voices of the boy band the girls adore belong to Joey McIntyre (New Kids on the Block), Nick Lachey (98 Degrees), Joey Fatone (*NSYNC), and Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men). That's star power! (Trailer)
Jailbirds People sure do love jail documentaries. Here's another one, profiling the women incarcerated in the Sacramento County Jail. It's as close to a real-life Orange Is the New Black as Netflix has gotten. (Trailer)
ReMastered: The Lion's Share The eighth and final installment of this season of monthly music documentary series ReMastered follows South African journalist Rian Malan's quest to redistribute the wealth of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which has earned millions of dollars for American artists but nothing for the impoverished family of songwriter Solomon Linda, an injustice which Malan sets out to rectify as an act of personal contrition for his own family's role in apartheid. (Trailer)
Shéhérazade This gritty French indie is set in the slums of Marseille, where teenage petty crook Zach falls in love with streetwalker Shéhérazade, which leads to serious consequences. It won three César Awards (the French Oscars), for Best First Film for director Jean-Bernard Marlin and Best New Actor and Actress for its young stars Dylan Richard and Kenza Fortas. (Trailer)
Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, Volume 3 Hasan Minhaj is back for another batch of informative John Oliver-style political comedy. Topics in this volume include censorship in China (which comes after Minhaj was banned in Saudi Arabia), politics in India, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development and its loony leader Ben Carson. (Trailer / Sunday, May 12)
Malibu Rescue The premise of this kids' movie is Baby Baywatch. Some kids including Breanna Yde and Ricardo Hurtado from Nick's School of Rock learn how to be junior lifeguards. If this were a theatrically released movie, it would be rated PG for "mild rude humor." (Trailer / Monday, May 13)
revisions, Season 1 This anime series has a pretty similar premise to The Society in some ways. It follows some teenagers from Shibuya who get time-warped into a future version of their city. But then there's big robots and stuff they have to fight, so it's actually pretty different than The Society. You should just watch The Society. (Trailer / Tuesday, May 14)
Still Laugh-In: The Stars Celebrate This special is a tribute to the classic Nixon-era sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. Dan Rowan and Dick Martin are both dead, so they won't be there to accept the praises. There doesn't seem to be much of a point to this besides the fact that it launched the career of Lily Tomlin, and Netflix loves Lily Tomlin. It also launched the career of Goldie Hawn, but she's not in this. But it does have Tiffany Haddish crip-walking, which is something we all know and love from the original Laugh-In! (Trailer)
Stop searching, start watching! TV Guide's Watch This Now! page has even more TV recommendations.

Shaken NZ battle England for final spot
Big Picture
What just happened? That was the overriding sentiment, you imagine, in the New Zealand dressing room after Friday night’s pongo-fest. At the halfway stage of the game at Eden Park, Martin Guptill’s hundred looked to have put the hosts on the way to sealing their spot in the tri-series final; when Aaron Finch hit the 32nd and final six an hour and a half later to complete Australia’s extraordinary chase, New Zealand were out on their feet and left to groggily contemplate a group decider in two days’ time.
Jaws, and morale, must be picked off the floor if they are to ensure England don’t take advantage in Hamilton. Somehow, despite having lost all three games in the series so far, Eoin Morgan’s team can still claim the trophy. Their cause will be boosted by the return of Morgan, who has recovered from a groin strain, though they will resist the temptation to throw Ben Stokes straight into the fray – he has trained with his team-mates after arriving in New Zealand but is likely to be saved for the one-dayers.
England have to do more than just beat New Zealand to reach the final – given their inferior net run rate, they must do so by a clear margin. Should they bat first and score 180, for example, they would need to keep New Zealand to 160 or below; if New Zealand were to make the same score, England’s requirement would be to chase it down in 18 overs or fewer.
There has been some grumbling about the state of T20 cricket after the Auckland run-glut but, but while the scores were always likely to be bigger on New Zealand’s grounds, that match was an outlier in every sense. With the exception of Dawid Malan, England’s batting has misfired but they remain in with a shot of salvaging something from this experimental tri-series and won’t mind another high-scoring shootout. The same goes, most likely, for those hoping to grab another catch or two in the crowd.
Form guide
(last five completed matches, most recent first)
New Zealand LWLLL England LLLLW
In the spotlight
Amid the flurry of records and numbers in Auckland, Martin Guptill‘s achievements were somewhat overlooked. His second T20I century was a masterclass in controlled top-order aggression and along the way it saw him pass Brendon McCullum as the leading run-scorer in the format (and reach the brink of 100 sixes). England know what he can do after his 65 from 40 balls helped set up New Zealand’s one win so far in Wellington.
Sam Billings seems forever in need of an opportunity to nail down his England place – but, in fact, he has played in nine of their last ten T20s. Although that run has encompassed three innings as opener, deputising for Alex Hales, before dropping back down to No. 6, his highest score is the 29 made in Melbourne a week ago. Despite being an electric fielder, he does not offer a bowling option and, with Stokes hovering, needs to produce.
Teams news
New Zealand will hope to have Mitchell Santner available, having missed the Eden Park carnage with a knee issue. Ben Wheeler was taken out of the attack for bowling two high full-tosses on Friday and, after conceding 64 runs from 3.1 overs, could well be taken out of the firing line in Hamilton.
New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Mark Chapman, 6 Colin de Grandhomme, 7 Tim Seifert (wk), 8 Mitchell Santner/Anaru Kitchen, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Ish Sodhi, 11 Trent Boult
Morgan has declared himself fit to return after missing the last two games, with James Vince likely to make way. The recurrence of Liam Plunkett’s hamstring problem means a change to the attack, Tom Curran the obvious replacement.
England (probable) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), Jos Buttler (wk), 6 Sam Billings, 7 David Willey, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Tom Curran, 11 Mark Wood
Pitch and conditions
Unlike Auckland’s multi-purpose stadium, Seddon Park is a cricket-specific venue with more traditional boundary dimensions. That said, runs come pretty freely on a true batting surface – in 2012, it was the venue for Richard Levi to score what was then the fastest T20 hundred, off 45 balls. While Cyclone Gita is set to bring more wet weather to New Zealand over the coming days, the forecast is clear for Sunday.
Stats and trivia
England are set to play their 100th T20 international. They will be the fifth team to do so after South Africa (100), Sri Lanka (103), New Zealand (109) and Pakistan (123).
New Zealand have won six out of seven T20Is at Seddon Park, including beating England by 55 runs in 2013.
Malan has made three fifties from his first four T20 internationals innings, a feat only achieved previously by Sanath Jayasuriya.
Quotes
“To put 240 on the board and to lose the game, it’s a little bit disheartening, but we haven’t really got a lot of time to dwell on it.” Martin Guptill looks forward after defeat in Auckland
“I came through today well, so I’m fit and ready for tomorrow unless something ridiculous happens. I’m feeling good and looking forward to getting back in the side.” Eoin Morgan is eager to return
