Diana’s POV [INTERN YEAR]

She breathes.

That’s as much as she can say about what’s happening with her at the moment. And it’s dark. The gentle whirring of some distant machinery like the chirping of a dystopian bird the only sound around her.

A moment of panic.

Where is she?

Then she feels it.

His shoulder under her head, his namesake's finger curled around hers.

She freezes.

Her head is on his shoulder. Her breathing heavy as opposed to his evened out breathing.

A thousand warning bells ring in her head. She fell asleep on her attending and he allowed it. And he’s probably awake and being polite so as to not wake her up.

She knows she’s overthinking it. Ethan couldn’t possibly be awake so late.

But then she feels it. His eyes on her. Panicked she spins around towards him. And he is most definitely not sleeping. Ethan Ramsey is as awake as she is.

Before she can give an explanation, he thrusts something towards her. A cushion? (Where did he get it from?) (And most importantly why is he not angry?) Why is he watching her like she is another puzzle piece not falling into place.

It baffles her. But what waffles her more is the warm feeling that fills her when he doesn’t move away from her.

And she has a vague feeling, that something changed for both of them in the cramped NICU loveseat, something neither of them wanted (or knew how) to address.

As Diana settles back in the seat, the cushion in place, their shoulders touching, the ER. Dolores. Burning buildings, stuffed frogs and the pleas of a dying mother faded away in the warm glow of something new between the two hearts beating in rhythm with the third tiny one in their little bubble away from the world.

ETHAN’S POV [A YEAR AFTER BOOK THREE]

The days on which he has to go to the hospital without her are the worst. He hates having to sit in an office and doing paper works.

He misses interacting with the wide plethora of people.

He misses the intrigue of a case that baffles the best of minds.

He misses the thrill of diagnosing cases through the last slipping threads.

He misses Tobias and his absolutely disgusting jokes, Harper’s witty remarks but most importantly he misses her.

He misses the way she snorts when she laughs at his dry humour, the way she held his hand under the diagnostic table or the way she’d never be afraid to voice her thoughts, the way she’d speak up to Bloom at each of his interruptions and the way she took the absolute command of the room with the fire in her eyes turning into a gentle warmth.

And the way she’d stand on tiptoes to kiss him after everyone else left the room.

And with a startle he understands what her friends mean when they say he is whipped for her.

He loved her despite all the pain love has brought him in his life. And she loves him with soft smiles and familiar comfort of a person you want in your life for the rest of time.

Her thoughts envelope him as he enters their apartment with his keys. Only to be greeted with soft music floating in the air mixed with the pleasant smell of spices being cooked.

He hears her before he sees her, “Yes Ma I added the jeera, and the potato pieces what do I add next?”

She has her mom on speaker while she frantically adds the ingredients precisely in a way someone adds chemicals in a lab, a pleasant feeling courses through him as he sees her standing in front of the kitchen island in his shirt, hair pulled up in her signature messy bun.

She feels like home.

Hearing his voice she turns towards him and gives him that smile that makes his heart flutter in the most beautiful way and then she goes back to her work.

When he returns to her, she is still on the phone and probably doesn’t notice when he wraps his arms around her and rests his chin on her shoulder, leaning down a little and she leans back.

They stay that like that for a while. Their simple mundane life. Just the two of them in their own simple life so filled with love.

And then he thinks about how it would feel to have this feeling for the rest of his life. How it would feel to not just return to a home with her by his side but to be greeted by Jenner and perhaps even the laughter of a child, of their child.

And he thinks about the ring his father showed him and about how he needs to call him.

But that will have to wait. For the moment he’d just savour her and their beautifully mundane world so full of laughter and life.

The lights were dim, voices muffled, almost nil. Half of the corridors remain empty, the crowd shifted to a world outside the halls of the hospital.

Some at Donahue's, probably doing bets with shots, some with their partners, talking about the long day they had. Others rush home, probably because they have work to do or someone to meet.

Nights at Edenbrook were always a contrast to its days. The lively chatters now dimmed to whispers, muffled voices. The rush now slowed down, people minimal. The canteen mostly empty. The congregations of interns at various places all around the hospital, now missing. All the changes just gave Ethan more reasons to work after hours. His Apartment was an empty space, just a place to sleep and wake and dress and come back here. Years of walking past these corridors have led every way to get etched in his memory, and in ways, he feels he knows Edenbrook better than he knows his house, devoid of any cheer, tear or care.

His steps take him to his place, a place where he can disappear into his own world. In medical journals, patient charts and thoughts of a certain someone. His coffee warm in his hand gives him the solace that he has everything he needs for a peaceful time.

That is until his eyes capture the scene in his office. Not very unusual, but special enough to make his heart rush a bit. Her hair in a messy bun, she leans into the textbook, gazes focused on the pages that her fingers turn in search of a specific something. Time passes but his mind doesn't seem to notice.

In between of one such turn of a page, she stifles a yawn, clearly tired after all the cases she has handled since the morning.

"Rookie"

Her ambers look at him, the surprise at his voice cleared away in a moment. She offers a small smile as he walks up to her, taking a place at his designated seat next to her.

"Take this"

"You got me coffee? I didn't know that you knew I was still here"

"I never knew bringing someone a coffee would lead to an interrogation"

She giggles, and so does he. The voice still sounded foreign, but the melody that was created as a result of their synchronized laughs was too beautiful, too mellifluous for him to miss.

Being close to her felt like getting lost in a meadow of morning dews, as the soft sun shines overhead. Laying in the grass-covered plains, letting the gentle zephyr make the locks of hair dance. Gazing at the moon through the curtain of faint drizzle, enchanting moonshine washing over the face.

She leans back and closes her eyes, relishing the warmth and energy the caffeine grants her. He closes her textbook and lets his eyes devour the scene from a distance, a picture that was only for him to see and save in his heart.

"What time is it?"

"Too late for you to be here"

"I should really get going. My phone died and all my roommates would be worried sick."

She gets up, taking the textbook, rushing past as his voice makes her halt on her way.

"Let me drop you"

"You don't need to-"

"It's too late, and I insist. I am leaving as well, so it won't be much of trouble"

After a pause, she agrees.

They get down to the atrium together, stopping just a bit for her to grab some of her belongings from the locker room. Walking side by side, her words as whispers when they reach him

"You know, you don't need to do this just because I am a member of your team. I can take care of myself."

For a moment, his pace slowed as he watched her walk past. He wanted to pull her back to him and tell her what she really was to him. How he wanted to take care of her. How he wanted to make sure that she was safe because she mattered to him more than anything in the world. And if anything were to happen to her, he would lose his last bits of sanity.

Quickening his pace, he catches up to her and his reply makes her heart do a little happy dance.

"You are more than a member of my team, you are more than a colleague. And you know that."

As she watched him move past to start his car, a smile lit up her face in the dim environment Edenbrook found itself in, his words playing like her favourite lyric, over and over.

The drive to her home is peacefully silent. The windows lowered down, a soft piano plays from her phone. It's halcyonic, to be in a moment like that. To be lost in their own worlds but dreaming of each other. To be so comfortable with each other that silence becomes a way of conversing. That's what Ethan and Pooja's relationship was all about.

The halt in front of her apartment is reluctant, disheartening. They could keep going like that, together, for miles. At some moment, their hands would intertwine, while sometime later, their lips would grow tired of the distance and land upon each other. Any amount of time they spent together that ended up in separation, was too minuscule.

Getting down, he expects her to leave without a pause, but she doesn't.

"Umm... Text me when you reach home safely." She requests as she talks to him through the open window. After his brisk nod, she waves a bye, before walking away on her track to home.

His heart stops him from driving back. He sits there, smiling, wondering if anyone had said that to him ever again.

If anyone had cared enough to be concerned about his wellbeing, his safety. If anyone had ever cared for him as she does. The answer is almost instantly discovered.

No one had. Because no one could ever be her.

She was his home, and he had reached it that very day when he had let his guard fall and let his lips touch hers. After wandering homeless for years, he had finally found his home, in her.

And he knew that there was no other place, where he could feel safer and happier than when he was with her.
