“Art can be Filipino yet universal.” - Romulo Galicano

The consistency of the Filipino artist in the past decade, both in the local and global scene, has been a key factor in re-establishing the Philippines as a cultural powerhouse in Southeast Asia.

Whether at art shows, in auctions, or even in social media, Filipino artists have featured prominently. It is this achievement that this year’s ManilArt is looking to underline when it kicks off on October 13-15, 2017 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier in Taguig City. Established in 2009 by the National Committee on Art Galleries (NCAG) of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), ManilART 2017 will be highlighting Mindanao. This year’s ManilART will give center stage to Mindanaoan artists as well as works about Mindanao.

I was happy I was able to catch the last few hours of this wonderful gallery. I’ve always been a fan of art appreciation, but I am also amazed on how people interpret artworks differently -- the reason why every time I go to art fairs like this, I always make it a point to feature not only the artworks, but also the audience themselves. 

ManilArt, a culture resulting from a tumultuous past of diverse foreign influences, the country’s rich history that had shaped its distinct culture and artistic flavor. From the indigenous, Muslim and Catholic traditions, to those with European influences, Modernism and contemporary slant, a broad range of works can be seen in this year’s exhibition. The show serves to highlight the country’s wealth of creativity in the visual arts and how it contributes significantly to expanding the artistic frontiers of the region. It showcases works of vibrant new upcoming talents, as well as iconic masters of the Philippine art scene. 

Echoing the rich cultural assertion of Filipinos complemented by international artists’ presentation, the fair is sure to captivate and engage the youth, the educators, the critics, young and seasoned collectors alike, art vanguards and the quad-media.

everything about the dream was soft and scary. i was freaking out even in my subconscious.

i was sleeping next to a man in a baby pink tee. or was the whole light of it rose-colored? i dont know. i knew in my head though that we were just days from our "dream wedding" and I was fucking terrified. who the hell was he? at first i thought it was naiah. because he was both strange and familiar. but no. it cant be him. i didnt want it to be him. i want it to be someone else. i kept repeating this in my head. it's not him. cant be him. he was was married to libby already. i even saw pluto's photo before i slept. ohhhhh. maybe that's why i thought about libby and naiah. now this. but this was just a dream. i have to wake up because i have a meeting at 8. i hate pink. who the fuck are you

the man turned. it was strange. the room spinned.

i remember a crazy drive with kiko going to manilart where we were traversing EDSA traffic next to an okada bus. i was nauseous the whole time that pink and red violet monster was next to the car.

the dream felt like that drive.

fuck. i have to wake up.

and i did. with the worst panic attack i've had in a few months.

MANILA – The year 2020 may have been devastating for many but organizers and participants of arts fair, ManilArt, proved that there is hope, through a display of inspiring and colorful artworks.

ManilArt, the longest-running art exhibit in the country, was held on Dec. 9-13 at the SMX Convention Center in SM Aura Premier.

Twenty-three galleries were tilted in the event featuring some of the country's globally recognized artists.

Ella Hipolito, a visual artist from San Mateo in Rizal, was among the talents who showcased their artworks in ManilArt 2020.

Her display, which she dubbed as “Wisp series,” started in 2018 and was originally called “Phantasm series”. 

 “They were inspired by my fixation on things that are magical. I fancy fantasy. Betta or the fighting fish also plays a role in the creation of my wisp series. I think of them in my wisp's every curve,” she told the Philippine News Agency.

 In English folklore, Will-o'-the-wisp is an atmospheric ghost light seen by travelers at night.

Hipolito added that she sees hope and positivity amidst all the ‘darkness’.

“People's consciousness are preoccupied with the negativities caused by the pandemic, I guess the common denominator between the art collector & the artist is that art being a mentally therapeutic approach,” she said, adding that she got quite an inquiry on her works.

Her works were in the same gallery with Melissa Yeung Yal, Katrina Pallon, Ronna Manansala, Valen Valero, Rac Bautista, Jeff Dahilan, Pancho Piano, and Fernando Sena.

The organizers of the ManilArt sought to reach out to everyone affected by the health crisis.

They said it is their vision to ignite hope for the people viewing the exhibit at the comforts of their homes.

Unlike the tradition, this year's exhibit has been put up online, ManilArt director Tessa Rayos del Sol said during their virtual streaming.

"We have utilized the digital platform to reach more audiences this time," she said.
