A Guide to Art Deco Ceramics by Catteau for Boch Freres
Charles Catteau was born in Douai, France, in 1880; He began working as a decorator at the Manufacture Nationale de Sevres in the year 1902, and in 1903 he graduated from the National Ceramics School in Sevres. His first job after earning his degree was at the Konigliche Porzellan-manufacturer in Nymphenburg, near Munich.

His talent was soon noticed by one of the most significant Ceramics producers in Belgium. Art Deco Ceramics by Boch Freres was founded in 1841 by Eugene and Victor Boch, together with their brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Nothomb. Then Catteau developed the factory’s next generation of artists. In addition to his design work, Catteau taught a decorative painting course and was actively involved in the academic and artistic development of the Boch Freres employees.
Catteau Sought to create for all.
By his art for all philosophy, Catteau aimed to develop authentic designs that could be manufactured on an industrial scale. Eventually, Catteau’s techniques became so advanced that this wares seemed artisan-produced rather than factory-made products, and the ability to create industrially produced pieces of the high artistic caliber was at the heart of his success.
Art Deco Ceramics by Catteau Boch Freres produced innovations that led to colorful pieces becoming readily available to the public.
His work at Boch Freres attracted important French clients.
As his output grew, Boch Freres Keramis began to accept orders from chief Paris department stores. La Maitrise even published a Boch Freres Keramis vase in its catalog for the explosion International des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in the year 1925 – a landmark event for the ceramicist and his Atelier De Fantaisie.
Initially, Catteau’s decorative output was more conventional: landscapes, courting couples, and naturalistic designs covered his vases. After the First World War, Catteau’s style began to reflect the influence of Art Deco, and he eventually brought Art Deco vases into formal production at Boch Freres Keramis.

A study on sand and ceramics and how “things need to be excavated” and start deteriorating for discovery to begin. ⠀⠀ “My work is all about structures and impermanence – how things disappear, change or blend into different forms,” says Syrian-born, UAE-based architect Talin Hazbar. The name of her latest project, Transient: A Brief Stay, reflects this interest. The result of two years of research and a collaboration with the French ceramics maker Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, it’s a project that goes on display this week in the form of an installation at the new Louvre Abu Dhabi. - Words from the @disegnodaily article on the exhibit. See @talinhazbar for more on her process! / / / #louvreabudhabi #sand #ceramics #ceramicsculpture #discover #art #contemporaryart #abudhabi #transient #artheals #exhibition #syrian #frenchceramic #installation #collectors #artexhibition #connected #desertlife #middleeast #minimal #curated #artblogger #sculpture #sevres #talinhazbar #letternoon #newmiddleeastbydesign (at Louvre Abu Dhabi)
