Advertisement 2: Alagang Ramdam ng Bawat Pilipino | Lactum 3+
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mother's Day is a special occasion that honors the love and sacrifices of mothers everywhere, and this advertisement celebrates this sentiment. The ad targets parents with growing toddlers and adolescents, highlighting the daily routines and sacrifices that mothers make for their children.
To support this message, the advertisement provides examples of the sacrifices that mothers make, such as working long hours or putting their own needs aside to prioritize their children's well-being. It also emphasizes the loving and nurturing characteristics that mothers possess, which make them such important figures in their families and communities. Statistics and studies have shown the positive impact that mothers have on their children's development and the wider society.
In addition to celebrating mothers, the advertisement promotes a product that can benefit both mothers and children. It explains how the product supports children's growth and development, and how it can make it easier for busy mothers to provide for their children's needs. The advertisement also acknowledges the cultural significance of Mother's Day in the Philippines and how the holiday is celebrated. It highlights how the ad aligns with the values and beliefs of Filipino culture, emphasizing the importance of family and community.
The company's decision to target Filipino citizens (Mothers, adults, & children) of all ages and environments by highlighting the importance of mothers in Filipino culture is a shrewd marketing strategy. As a nation that is known for its strong family ties, Filipinos hold their mothers in high regard, and the company may have recognized this cultural value as a key selling point.
The advertised products benefit young, growing kids, as the brand prioritizes their health, which supports the statement that the product is necessarily good for the target market. By promoting this message in the ad, parents will likely feel a stronger emotional connection to the brand, making them more motivated to purchase their products. This emotional connection is essential as it can lead to brand loyalty and repeat purchases, which is vital for the company's success in the long term. Overall, the ad's message of promoting children's health can be a compelling factor in parents' purchasing decisions.
There are no forms of Media Manipulation present in the ad. However, the company's advertisement utilized emotional appeals that resonate with Filipino audiences, such as sentimental music, heartwarming stories, and images of mothers and children bonding. There was no misinformation or distortion of information present, which are possible forms of media manipulation. The advertisement managed to capture the attention of its target audience by imploring their sentimental and emotional side.

Moving Filipinos Sustainably: A Suppressed Right to Public Transportation
Authored by:
Dominica Emanuelle Peña, Ezekiel Joshua Pante, and Geo Paulo Tambalo
Tumblr media
In 2021, Jude Esguerra, an Economics Advisor for Senator Risa Hontiveros, noted in his publication, called 'Revert or readjust? Metro Manila,' that one of the most crowded road systems globally exists in the Philippines’ largest metropolitan area [1]. Almost a year later, the city of Manila, which constitutes a fraction of the greater Metro Manila, was ranked 9th most beset by traffic congestion out of 389 cities worldwide [2]. In a rather convenient manner, redemption from these critical reviews was seemingly found by successive administrations in the grandiose of lofty skyways and sweeping expressways. But, with prioritizing the implementation of more infrastructure projects for vehicles, the constant pressure from dissatisfied road users appears to have blinded the government to every scientific call for transforming the existing car-centric transport system into something more mass-oriented.
From a health and environmental perspective, a transport system designed to fit more engines burning gasoline and diesel is the last thing Filipinos need. In 2023, air quality monitoring data revealed that certain areas in Metro Manila had excessive pollutants, which the Department of Environment and Natural Resources primarily linked to emissions from heavy traffic [3]. As such, many road users, pedestrians, and nearby residents are at risk from increasing hazardous byproducts of vehicular combustion, like carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, hydrocarbons, benzene, and formaldehyde, which are all associated with malignant health conditions. Not just that, vehicle emissions also reduce the quality of living conditions as they are significant sources of greenhouse gas—the main contributor to another damaging phenomenon called global warming [4]. As the government and their corporate partners push for more roads to be built, the worst scenario is yet to come since a growing number of people want to buy their own private vehicle [5].
Organizations, such as the Move As One Coalition, have been advocating for ecologically sound modes of transportation and changing the norm—the dependency on private cars [6]. Much like the food pyramid, which primarily models healthy eating habits, the Mobility Pyramid above illustrates who and what to prioritize in creating a healthier transport system and relatively more “breathable” community. Evidently from the top half, people and public transportation must be the primary considerations, assuring their utmost safety and accessibility. If the destination is only a short distance away, walking must be the first undisputed option of Filipinos, implying the need for convenient walkways, pedestrian lanes, and green spaces. Without hesitation, one must also be able to choose to safely ride a bicycle or commute using a readily available, systematic network of jeepneys, buses, and trains. The lower half of the reverse pyramid, which presents the predominant figures of the current transport system, encapsulates the small significance of cars, which carry less people, and planes, which have significant emissions [7].
Though all positive outcomes are rooted in a mass-oriented transport system, the deciding power remains to believe otherwise. In fact, the building, widening, and maintenance of roads accounted for 99% of the P2.8 trillion road-based infrastructure budget between 2010 and 2021, leaving only 1% or Php 40 billion for the improvement of public transportation. This choice of allocation can be argued as a misrepresentation of the majority since, according to the Move as One Coalition, 70% of Metro Manila residents depend on public transportation, which occupy only 22% of the available road space. Meanwhile, the remaining 30% of residents in Metro Manila who rely on private vehicles occupy approximately 78% of the road space [8].
The people constitute the success of a nation. With all this knowledge at the government’s disposal, any act of delaying or botching public transportation projects for self-vested interests can be construed as a willful disregard of the environment and the majority of Filipinos. No longer must commuters experience dealing with lengthy queue lines, crammed public transport vehicles, lack of proper walkways, difficult ramps, and polluted environmental conditions. May the deciding power heed the call of tired students, struggling workers, the physically disabled, and honorable senior citizens for a right and just transition to a mass-oriented transport system in the Philippines,

SAN BEDA’S RECORD-EXTENDING 23rd CHAMPIONSHIP VINDICATES RED LIONS’ PROGRAM
by Bert A. Ramirez / December 18, 2023
Tumblr media
The San Beda team and its supporters celebrate after the Red Lions clinched their 23rd NCAA championship.  (Photo from Tiebreaker Times)
Yesterday’s landmark championship victory by the San Beda Red Lions not only extended their NCAA record to 23 men’s basketball titles won but, more importantly, has vindicated the Mendiola squad’s basketball program.
The Red Lions overcame a four-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to beat top-seeded Mapua University in their winner-take-all duel going away 76-66 and in effect avenged a close defeat in the championship battle between the two teams’ predecessors 32 years ago.  This, incidentally, was the Cardinals’ last championship victory in the league, a three-decade-plus drought that they wanted to end this year.
It was not to be, however, as Yukien Andrada and James Payosing, the eventual Finals MVP, combined in the last quarter to deliver the killer blows that eventually wilted the favored Cardinals. Down by their biggest deficit 57-53 when the season’s final frame started after having led most of the way from the start, the Lions showed the heart of their mascot king of the jungle, coming up with their most lethal assault when everything was on the line.
Tumblr media
Yukien Andrada unleashes one of the three-point bombs that eventually took the life out of the Mapua Cardinals’ cause.  (Photo from NCAA Philippines’ Facebook account)
After top Mapua scorer and rebounder JC Recto (18 points, 13 rebounds) gave the Cardinals a 61-58 lead with a layup with eight minutes to go, the Red Lions, through Andrada, Payosing and Jacob Cortez, came up with a crippling 10-0 blow to take irretrievable control of the game.  Andrada first tied it up with a three-point bomb, Payosing then put San Beda up for good with two free shots, and Andrada then hit another triple before Cortez came up with a banked floater as the Lions roared to a 68-61 lead and their supporters from the 23.077 fans that packed the Araneta Coliseum cheered them on.
Then, after Paolo Hernandez ended the Mapua drought with a long two, Clifford Jopia, playing in his last game for San Beda along with birthday-boy Peter Alfaro and Damie Cuntapay, scored on a putback to make it 70-63, time down to 3:22.  Payosing then clustered three more points to complete a murderous 15-2 San Beda onslaught and give the Lions their biggest lead at 73-63 and all but take the fight out of the Cardinals with barely two minutes remaining.
Andrada topscored for San Beda with 20 points and also had six rebounds while Payosing had another double-double with 11 points and a game-best 14 rebounds and Cortez, who was cramping up as early as the third quarter, contributed eight points and eight assists after leading the Bedans to their series-tying 71-65 victory in Game 2 with 21 points as San Beda won its first men’s title since 2018.  That was when the NCAA still allowed foreign student athletes and the Lions, then with Donald Tankoua, was the object of protests, if not envy, by a number of league members owing to their dominance after having won 11 championships in 14 years employing such players, a stretch that started in 2006.
But since the NCAA has banned foreign student athletes in 2020, San Beda has failed to win a championship, further fueling sentiments that they only won because of such players, not even considering that many home-grown talents that went on to excel in the pros were also developed by the school through its basketball program.
This latest championship should put that issue to rest, particularly after several key home-grown players left the school for various reasons just before NCAA Season 99 started.  Five of these players, for example, chose not to return following the Lions’ Final Four exit last year, with veterans James Kwekuteye and JB Bahio making the jump to the pros and younger guys like Tony Ynot, Justine Sanchez and Gab Cometa all transferring to De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.  Just to show how vital these five departing players were, they combined for 46.2 points of the Red Lions’ 75.7-point average in Season 98.
Kwekuteye alone was the Lions’ undisputed go-to guy and was a member of the Season 98 Mythical Five, while the 6-foot-3 Bahio finished third in the MVP voting and was likewise in the Mythical Five while also making the All-Defensive Team, and Ynot averaged 9.1 points and 5.4 rebounds and the 6-5 Sanchez 5.6 points and 3.4 boards.
This is why Andrada, a 6-5 frontliner with a deadly three-point shot, now fittingly symbolizes San Beda’s basketball program as he is the only remnant of that old core they expected to build upon and, along with such guys as Payosing, Cortez, former Mapua Red Robin star Nygel Gonzales and 6-6 Fil-Canadian recruit Jomel Puno, would now make up the Red Lions’ new core in the next few years.
San Beda’s resounding victory in this year’s senior basketball competitions should also entrench coach Yuri Escueta as the new undisputed head of San Beda basketball.  Escueta, in just his second year at the helm, has shown an excellent grasp of the nuances of the game and the psyche of his players.  Left without those major departures, it could have easily been a rebuilding year for the Bedans.
But Escueta, armed with great leadership and motivational skills, made do with what he had and, as a scribe described it, “resharpened” the Lions’ claws in just one year.  Sure, he got help from elite basketball minds in consultants Norman Black and Boyet Fernandez, a San Beda champion coach himself, but on his own, Escueta has shown adept basketball knowledge.
Tumblr media
Coach Yuri Escueta gets a victory lift from his players.  (Photo from Tiebreaker Times)
When the Lions lost four of their first five games in the second round, for example, which eventually deprived the Lions a twice-to-beat advantage, Escueta rallied his guys and regrouped them to take the succeeding games one game at a time, and it worked.  The Red Lions won their last four assignments in the eliminations, including a crucial win over Lyceum of the Philippines, and they beat the second-seeded Pirates in the semifinals twice before losing their first game to Mapua in the finals to see that streak end at six.
Yesterday’s clinching victory, however, showed that whatever Escueta cooked up and the Red Lions executed is just what they needed to show even the doubters that they were the best team in the league once more, and the San Beda program is indeed one of the country’s elite, with or without foreign talent.

Advertisement 1: Jollibee, Sarap Kasama ang Pamilya
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jollibee is a popular fast-food chain in the Philippines, known for its delicious fried chicken and burgers. Amid the pandemic, Jollibee released an advertisement that aimed to provide hope and positivity to Filipino citizens during these difficult times. The ad opens with visuals of citizens wearing facemasks and face shields, and everyone stuck at home while a child's voice narrates his frustration with being indoors. The ad then shifts to a more positive perspective as the child realizes the joy of spending time with his family at home. He realizes he doesn't need to go outside to have fun when he can play with his older brother and grandparents.
The child's happiness is further amplified when he learns that his parents work from home, allowing him to spend more time with them. The advertisement climaxes when the family sits down to enjoy a Jollibee bucket meal together. The meal represents a sense of togetherness and joy, despite the challenges that the family is facing.
While Jollibee's chicken bucket meal may not be the healthiest option for its target audience due to its high calorie and sodium content, it can still be a good product for its intended purpose. Jollibee aims to bring joy and harmony to families during difficult times, and sharing a meal can undoubtedly contribute to that goal. However, being aware of the potential health risks associated with consuming this meal and practising moderation is vital.
The advertisement did not rely on overt forms of media manipulation to capture viewers' attention. Instead, it used emotional appeal to create a powerful and relatable message. By showing how the pandemic has affected families' daily lives, the advertisement was able to tap into viewers' feelings of isolation and longing for connection. This relatable scenario effectively engages viewers and draws them into the message.
Moreover, the advertisement's emphasis on family bonding and togetherness struck a chord with many viewers, particularly during a time when people are spending more time at home. While some advertisements rely on Media Manipulation to increase their views, this advertisement stood out by using genuine emotional appeal to connect with viewers. By presenting a heartfelt and relatable message, the ad effectively promoted the product in a way that resonated with its target audience.

Why it's hard to talk about Martial Law and the Marcos regime
Tumblr media
The student who dared to question Imee Marcos.
Archimedes Trajano, a student of Mapua Institute of Technology who unfortunately met his end in the hands of Imee Marcos’ henchmen.
During an open forum at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, the then-21-year-old questioned Imee on her capability to lead the youth and told her that she only became the head of the Kabataang Barangay because she was the president’s daughter. He also questioned her on the human rights abuses being committed by her father.
On September 2, 1977, his crumpled body was strewn on the streets of Manila. The official explanation was that he had died in a frat rumble inside his dormitory. Witnesses, however, said that Imee’s security dragged him away from the open forum. Trajano’s family successfully sued Marcos for civil damages in a Hawaii court; however, the local Supreme Court overturned it in 2006 due to a technicality committed by a lower court in trying to implement the prior verdict.

CONGRESS PADLOCKED UNDER MARTIAL LAW, 1972-1986
Days before the scheduled reopening of the Senate and the House of Representatives under the 1935 Constitution, Marcos promulgated the 1973 Constitution, which effectively abolished Congress and replaced it with a unicameral legislature which would be formed three years after. Opposition legislators reported to the Legislative Building on January 22, 1973, but found the building padlocked and under an armed guard.
The 7th Congress had been set to open its second regular session on January 22. The photo depicts Senators Doy Laurel, Eva Estrada Kalaw, Ramon Mitra, and Jovito Salonga posing in front of the Senate session hall which had been padlocked, a stark symbol of power held by a single man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Between 1972 and 1977, sixty thousand Filipinos were arrested for “political reasons.” A new word entered the Filipino vocabulary, “salvage.” The brutal verb described how the military would disappear individuals, torture and murder them, and then toss their corpses into vacant lots or drop them by the side of the road. Thousands were salvaged under Marcos’ reign of terror.
Photo shows the legs of Judy Taguiwalo, former Social Welfare secretary and member of the Samahan ng Demokratikong Kabataan, as policemen force her and her fellow activists to leap off a jeepney during a rally after the State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand Marcos in front of Manila's Congress on January 26, 1970.
Two were killed and many were injured after a scrimmage at Manila’s Burgos Drive up to nearby golf link in Intramuros and Luneta Park. The injured were brought to the Philippine General Hospital on Taft Avenue.
Prior to the confrontation between students and policemen, Ed Jopson of Ateneo and the conservative National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) chose radio commentator Arienda as a rally speaker over firebrand Gary Olivar of UP and SDK. It was dubbed as the “microphone battle” of the radical and conservative protesters in the 70s.

Mo, 27. März & Di, 28.März
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Die zwei Tage waren entspannt und intensiv zugleich. Erstmal finde ich es mega, einfach 5 Schritte nach draußen zu laufen und frische Feigen und Tomaten essen zu können. Super lecker aber Opa im Vertrauen, Deine Tomaten sind natürlich nicht zu übertreffen, auch nicht am andern Ende der Welt ( ;
I like the Flowers, I like the ..., I like the Mountains, I like the rolling Hills.
