carmy + michael

"because that restaurant, it has and does mean a lot to people. it means a lot to me. i just don't know if it ever meant anything to him."

carmy loves michael, and he very clearly misses his big brother's presence in his life.

but something that i want to discuss is how angry carmy is with michael. it's not an explosive anger but a sour one that froths underneath the surface of carmy's sadness.

in episode eight, when tina checks up on carmy, she remembers a time the restaurant didn't have napkins because mikey wasn't paying the vendor. she tells carmen, "he was like, 'what's the point? we're not gonna be able to pay 'em next month anyways.'"

carmy responds with, "sounds like that was his attitude, huh?" and sounds utterly defeated at the thought. he's starting to accept that maybe his brother really didn't give a shit about the restaurant, didn't give a shit about him. that he just left carmy with a gigantic mess to clean up as one final fuck you, because even when he's dead, mikey knows all the right buttons to push.

then tina responds - "no, no. i remember it because it wasn't his attitude." and now carmy's stumbling back to square one on figuring out his brother's intentions. and that's what makes carmy upset. the fact that he doesn't know what michael was thinking, that he doesn't know the depth of michael's addiction - or that he had one to begin with.

all of the little details carmy learns about his brother, no matter how dark, or how ugly, or how confusing they are, hurt infinitely less than all of the ones he doesn't.

carmy is angry at michael for pushing him away, and even angrier with himself for letting it happen because he knows there's no longer a chance for him to fix their relationship.

michael's letter (and the money he leaves for carmen) is his way of telling carmy - i see you. it's confirmation of the support carmen's been craving after michael shut him out.

but before carmy receives the letter, he has no clue about how much confidence michael had in him. instead, all of the anguish carmy feels about the deterioration of his relationship with michael is pooling into a sea of resentment.

and he's drowning in it.

it honestly is incredibly refreshing to talk about ofmd with non-fandom people sometimes. somehow got on the topic of Izzy while talking to my husband and i mentioned the drama and discourse around his death. he looked like one big question mark and just said:

"but it made perfect sense? his arc was complete and his death makes space for new things to come"

now bear in mind that this is a man who 1) has watched season 2 only once as it came out, 2) isn't big on media analysis in general and mostly watches marvel and star wars stuff for casual enjoyment, and 3) enjoyed Izzy's arc in s2 (so much that i suspect it was his favorite part of the season, definitely what he commented on the most) and teared up when he died

and he fucking nailed it

he was also very confused there was discourse at all because "but it's so obvious?!"

i just felt this immense relief that yes, it really is obvious and makes sense to the casual viewer who hasn't marinated their brain in meta and fic for 18 months

Okay, so I wouldn't normally post something like this so soon after a chapter release but I have stuff to do today and my brain won't let me do them until I ramble about Thoughts. Meta under the cut, spoilers for Chapter 1054. 

So let’s talk about the admirals.

When we first see the original three admirals all together, there’s some pretty interesting theming going on, and I’m not talking about the names, but rather personality and design hints. On a sliding scale, we have Aokiji at one end, relatively chill and slow to anger, then we move through Kizaru and his terrifying neutrality, onto Akainu who is much more of an aggressive presence. We also get this with their colors: cool and calm blue on one end with angry red on the other end of the spectrum, Kizaru’s yellow again taking up the middle slot.

And that’s a really neat way of highlighting how different the approaches of even the highest, most exclusive echelons of the Marines are. It’s a great shorthand to indicate to the reader that the Marines are not quite as united as they pretend to be.

But where things start getting really interesting is when we replace two of those admirals.

It was nowhere near as…I hesitate to say obvious because we’ve only had Aramaki for real for two chapters, but the parallels definitely weren’t as clean. But as of this latest chapter, it does seem that we have a situation now where we have replaced the two admirals who left (either by resignation or promotion) with much more starkly defined versions of the originals—at least in regards to philosophy and beliefs.

We see this first with Aokiji and Fujitora: Aokiji is not terribly well aligned with a lot of the more aggressive philosophies in the Marines, and we do spend a bit of time showing that because of events like Ohara, he has spent a lot of time thinking about things like this. He learns and sees the injustices in the world over time, and finally steps up to maybe do something about keeping more strict and aggressive ideologies from taking over—and might still be doing so, if the thoughts that he’s an undercover SWORD member or just a rogue agent with an agenda bears fruit.

Fujitora is the next step in this thought process. He arrives at the marines already incredibly familiar with the cruelties and injustices of the world—and honestly doesn’t seem to want the job at all—and needs no prompting whatsoever to immediately start working to bring down part of the system that he sees as wrong. It is a clear escalation of the ideals on this side of the spectrum, which is appropriate, because everything about the post-timeskip era is an escalation.

(As an aside, I would believe Aramaki absolutely jumped at the chance to take the job, and maybe had a marine or government-adjacent or related job to start with, given the words that have come out of his mouth, but Fujitora is another story entirely. The World Military Draft is still a draft and that implies a certain level of not being given a choice in the matter. I kind of want to know what sort of thing you have to hold over someone like Fujitora’s head to get him to comply).

On the other hand, Akainu is a follower of Absolute Justice, where the ends absolutely justify the means, no matter how horrific. And to replace him, we have Aramaki, who has taken it a step further and declared that all those horrible things aren’t just situationally necessary but systematically necessary. So we get an escalation in the other direction.

And then we have Kizaru, as ever, sitting dead in the center and being absolutely neutral. No explicit morals or drive, and all the more terrifying for it. Kind of the living representation on what it means to not take a side.

Also, we’ve technically had an escalation in the philosophies of the leadership as well. I can’t speak to Kong because we mostly only know that he…exists, but the shift from Sengoku to Sakazuki is also one of these. Sengoku had a style that seems to have been much more grounded in keeping the status quo afloat, since the breakdown of equilibrium in the world would only cause chaos, whereas Sakazuki is much more “no compromises, no quarter” and is arguably helping accelerate that breakdown as a result.

This sort of evolution of beliefs on either end of the spectrum, especially considering they are increasingly at odds with one another, feels like it’s deliberate. This feels like it’s leading somewhere, and maybe this is just narrative hints at how bad things have become in the outside world—because we’ve been in Wano a long time and one of the best features of Oda’s world is that it keeps moving outside the scope of the focal characters. Actions have consequences, and ripple effects you might not expect.

But between this and the introduction of SWORD, I think it’s entirely possible we’re headed for a very public Marine schism at some point in the near future. There’s going to be a line that a lot of people aren’t going to be willing to cross, and Sakazuki’s vow to “strike back and return fire on all fronts” in the latest chapter sounds an awful lot like it could be the trigger for something like that.

Genuinely excited to see where this goes, and happy to see how the rest of the One Piece world is doing again.

“How’s that?” Blaze asked Marine as the fire Princess duct taped another pillow to the small raccoon’s chest. Blaze stood up to briefly admire her handiwork. Marine was dawned in a makeshift homemade suit of armour. A pillow taped to her chest and one to her back. A cooking pot on her head like a knight’s helmet. Kitchen mittens on her hands reaching up to her elbows. And two teddy bears taped to her knees covering her legs. To top it all off she was wielding a wooden steering spoon in one of her hands, gripping it as if it was a sword and her life depended on it. Marine wore a pouty frown on her face, eyes narrowed, every muscle on her face tense. Blaze supported her chin up with a palm as she very uncharacteristically tilted her head to the side and ‘aww’ed at the cute raccoon. She didn't often show this side of her for the troublemaker, usually maintaining her cold and calculated exterior, but something about seeing the young raccoon in her first battle armour set her heart aflutter.

“Enough gawkin’, lady! Let's tenderise that thing!” Marine cried a war cry, ready to go to war with what they had found in the castle kitchen.

“Not like that.” Blaze replied, she took the wooden spoon and flung it behind her and instead handed the raccoon a meat cleaver, “There we go. Off we go.” Marine marched onward almost hopping with each step. Just then a beep sounded from Blaze’s wrist communicator, the watch-like device flickered blue. She tapped the touchscreen opening a channel with the caller on the other side. A green holographic image of Silver appeared, she couldn’t see below his torso, but she could tell that he was running, “Hey! What's up!? Sorry I missed your call I was being hunted by WereChaos monsters. What's up?”

“Nice to see you too. You're not busy, are you? Right now?

“Uhhhhhh, yeah... yeah I'm okay, I can talk.”

Blaze walked up to the kitchen door taking a spot next to Marine. They both poked their heads past the door frame looking into the kitchen. “Well, would you know what that is?” Blaze asked as she extended her arm, positioning Silver in a way that allowed him to see what was happening in the kitchen. Plates, utensils, cabinet doors were all being flung around. A bowl flew through Silver’s holographic head.

“Huh.” He responded. What he beheld was a massive bug-like creature rummaging through the kitchen’s fridge and cabinets, madly consuming all the food it could find. The bug had a hard dark blue exo-skeleton shell, six sharp legs, a beetle like horn, bright neon green glowing eyes, and the mouth akin to that of a snapping turtle. And most importantly a neon green underbelly, with green markings running across its body.

“So?! The heck is that!?” Marine exclaimed.

“We figured you'd know something about this... creature.” Blaze remarked as she ducked out of the way of an incoming wooden stool.

“Why is that?” Silver shrugged. The bug roared, the neon markings lit up and the Spring outside the kitchen window was now a harsh Winter. Time had shifted forwards. Or backwards? “Ah, I see.”

“This ugo look familiar?” The raccoon asked.

“Yeah, the reception isn't great,” the hologram glitched as he leaned into his wrist communicator squinting, “But that looks like a Continuuasite, that’s continuum and parasite combined into one word.” He cheerfully remarked. As Silver turned back to the cat and raccoon he noticed they were now wearing Christmas clothes.

“Yes, very clever Silvy.” Blaze remarked unamused, “How bad is it?”

“Well, judging by the markings it seems to be a meta-class; It's a narrative-eater, it feeds on narrative plot points, so there is a ticking clock right now.”

“Silvy, I won't pretend to understand your time travel jibber jabber, I'll just assume it's bad. How long until you get here?” The cat asked.

“It'll be a while, I'm three timelines away.” He paused, considering his words, “You'll have to deal with this on your own.”

“What!? No! No! No! Silver, I can't do this! This isn't my realm of expertise, what if we misstep and all of time and space implodes?!”

“Calm down, breathe, in and out. Don't worry. You can do this, Blazey. I'll guide you through the whole process. You'll do great.”

“A-- Are you sure?”

“Absolutely! You can do anything! And I'll stay on the line the whole ti--“ Silver’s image froze. The whole graphic showed it was losing Wi-Fi bars.

“Silver? Silver! SILVER THE HEDGEHOG I SWEAR TO THE SOL EMERALDS--!” She managed to cut herself off in time. She shook the watch furiously.

“ --ime --don’t --orry.”

She tapped the screen furiously, starting to panic.

meanwhile, three branching timelines away Silver was doing the same with his communicator. “Blaze? Can you hear me? The reception in this reality is awful.” His head nonchalantly ducked out of the way of a blade that was launched at him, the blade was attached to a chain at the handle, the combatant yanked back on the chain pulling the blade back and a chunk of the brick wall it was lodged in with it. The wall chunk crashed into the teal force field Silver created behind him. He remained unharmed, and the blade returned to the hand of the opposing combatant. Infinite The Jackal wore a mask which covered all his facial features apart from his left eye, but even with it on Silver could tell he was disappointed and... offended?

“Hello?! Are you paying attention? I was explaining my master scheme! You know we're fighting right?”

“Sorry.”

“It's very rude to ignore your fellow combatant!”

“Sorry.”

“Seriously, you can't wait?! You're in the fight of your current life!”

“I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. What were you saying?”

“Ugh, I was saying; Say your prayers hedgehog, because I'm about to send you back to your God! Ha ha ha!”

“Well, I'm one of the three people who restarted the universe so I'm technically one third year God.” He remarked in his chipper tone.

“Wha- What? Wait, wh- “

“Run hands.”

“W-- Wait! Wait!”

“Hello? Are you back?” Blaze and Marine were now clothed in Autumn-like clothing; puffy coats, beanie hats, earmuffs and scarves in orange, yellow, beige colour palettes, the cat was also sipping on a pumpkin spice latte.

“Yeah, I'm okay. I'm here. Where were we?” He smiled wide.

“Your naive optimism.”

“Oh yeah, you can do it!”

“Ugh, I hope this will go better than the time I left you to deal with my royal paperwork for a day.”

“I don't think it was that bad.”

“Oh, it was that bad, mate.” Marine corrected him.

“Silver, you said there was a ticking clock. How long do we have?”

“Well, how far are we into the narrative? 1,115 words out of 4,009. That's not good.” The bug suddenly roared again and increased in size breaking the chair it was on to reach the higher cabinets. “That's not good. It feeds on narrative significant events. We need to stop it before we get into the second act!”

“H-- How do we do that?” Blaze asked puzzled.

“Alright, you'll need to go into my room, you have my permission, there's a box under my bed for emerg—”

“I got it!” Marine popped up out of nowhere with the cardboard box held up with her hands.

“How did you get past the safety measures? Have you... Gone into my room before?”

“Not now Silv! Focus on what's important!” Marine waved him off.

Blaze took the box and placed it on the floor. She opened it and began to rummage through the contents, “What am I looking for, Silvy?”

“My spare gauntlet, put it on.” The lilac cat reached in and retrieved the glove, and pulled it onto her right hand. The gauntlet was silver and gold with circuitry detail on it that Silver had on his hands and across his entire body. The moment the feline's hand slipped into the glove it lit up with an orange glow. “Alright, it's glowing orange, what does that mean?”

“Baby Setting.”

“What?”

“Parental lock.” Silver shrugged.

“Oh, so that's why it didn't work before.” Marine piped up. Blaze and Silver both gave her a look, Silver’s was softer, Blaze’s was sterner. The raccoon began to sweat and looked off to the side, “Uhmm, never mind, carry on.”

“Anyways, it's the lowest, most limited setting.” Silver explained. “We don't want to unravel the fabric of space-time... or time-space. Our priority is to find out how it ended up here, they usually live in untime; in time between seconds.”

“Alright.” She attempted to follow.

“There should also be a notebook in the box.” Silver remarked. Marine dove in and pulled out the book covered in sticky notes with ‘Silver’s Notebook - Do Not Open Unless Silver’ written on it and scratched out with pen, underneath it was written ‘Proto-Everywhen’ along with dozens of other notes scribbled in Silver’s unreadable handwriting talking about things she did not understand.

“What’s Everywhen?”

“Not right now.”

“Yep, got it, mate.” Marine confirmed

“Darling, we need to work on your handwriting, it's atrocious.”

“Sorry, sorry, I know.”

“What are we looking for?” Marine asked as she opened up the journal and began to flip through.

The raccoon’s and cat’s eyes widened in confusion. It kept on flipping. Pages kept on flicking by. Blaze spoke up, “Silver, uh, the book, the pages, they keep on turning, it's not stopping.” Shock still on her face.

“Yeah, it's the InfinaJournal. It needs to hold an infinite amount of notes on all of time and space, you know how big all of time and space is!? It's quite large, I'd say.” He flung his arms up, talking kinetically.

“How do we find anything in this dump!?” Marine yanked on her head hair.

“The glove. You can turn back time to the moment when I wrote the notes about the Continuuasite. We need to find out how it got here. We need to pinpoint what happened to the timeline. It could have been a timeshift, a timestorm, a timethreshold, a timefold, a timefracture, a timestorm, or a timehail, which are all distinctly different and mistaking one for the other could lead to disastrous consequences.”

“Uh, um, al- alright.” Blaze’s regular confident tone had given way to a stammer of insecurity.

“It's alright, I'll take you through the process step by step.” Silver’s big wet puppy eyes comforted her somewhat. He instinctively reached out his hands towards Blaze, forgetting that he couldn't touch her. She wished she could hold him, she never enjoyed knowing he was always several realities away from her, constantly in danger, without anyone with him to watch his back. Blaze often offered to go with him to all those futures and alternate timelines, but Silver always refused. He could not in good conscience endanger her like that. Silver knew that the toll time travel took on a person and he would have hated to see that happen to Blaze. She had so many responsibilities already, the weight of her dimension carried on her shoulders. This was his burden to carry, for her, for everyone. He believed it was the least he could do for her, for all that she had done for him, for all that she had sacrificed for him. “Close your eyes.” The feline did so. “It's all about willpower. Luckily, you're the strongest willed person I know. You have to will your thoughts into existence. You need to imagine me writing the notes on the bug. Imagine feeling the texture of the paper. The sound of ink running against the paper. Imagine me. The texture of my fur. The touch of my hand. Do you see it?”

The cat's temperature began to rise in and around the feline's body, redness rising across her cheeks, “Yes. I see you.”

“Reach out your hand, hand open, palm facing the book. Fingers in a clawing-like position, as if you're holding a large dial, like a oven knob. Keep the image of the information being written down in your mind's eye. Okay?”

“Yes. I have it. Go on.”

“It's like cranking a clock. Clockwise moves time forward. Anti-clockwise moves time backward. So, you want to turn anti-clockwise, to the left.” She turned her hand to the left slowly.

“Okay, how long do I keep this up? When do I know I'm on the right page?” She asked with her eyes still closed.

“The image in your mind's eye; have I been replaced with you?”

“Y- Yes?”

“Open up!” Blaze opened her eyes and lo and behold, the journal stopped turning and it was opened on the page with the information they needed.

Blaze froze a little, eyes wide, “I- I did it... I DID IT! I DID IT!”

“YOU DID IT! I told you you could do it!” Silver remarked smiling from ear to ear. “You're a natural! Wonderful. Exceptional. Beautiful. One-of-a-kind. Breathtaking. Show stopping!” He raised his arms up in excitement.

“I- It’s hardly anything.” She waved the complement off.

“What does it say?” Silver asked as he leaned in.

Marine yanked the book away from Blaze. She practically face planted into the open pages. “Alright, past Silver writes that ‘meta-class narrative-eaters that feed on plot points are often shoved into our realities through’... wait a sec.”

“Why? Don't keep the tension building! Just read it!” Blaze growled.

“I can't! When I said ‘past Silver writes’ I meant it! Mate’s writing in the words right now as we speak.” The raccoon returned her gaze to the notebook. “Um, let's see here... ‘a time shift’! ‘Which occurs when a large sizable block of a timeline is pushed out into untime leaving a window which allowed the bugs to funnel in’. Okay, I think I got like 40% of that. ‘To solve this problem is quite simple’, okay good, ‘simply push the block back into place with the rest of the timeline’... HOW THE BLOODY H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS DO YOU PUSH TIME!?!?!” Marine returned to yanking her hair in stress. Yet another roar from the bug came out of the kitchen and it increased in size and barged through the kitchen wall out into the royal gardens outside.

“Oh, that's not good.” Silver remarked under his breath.

“Silver! What do we do?!” Blaze yelled.

Meanwhile, once again timelines away the grasyish hedgehog was pacing back and forth at the Quantum Bus Stop. The bus stop in untime, between timelines which he could see in the distance separated by a black blank void. He was panicking, scratching his head quills. Blaze was still on the other side of the comms, conversing as a hologram, she spoke, “Starlight, what do we do?!”

“Um, hold on, give me a second.” A bus materialised at this stop and its doors folded open. Silver sprinted aboard. “Just hold on for a little longer. I'm on my way back to our timeline branch!” A hooded figure behind the wheel of the bus reached out its palm, asking for compensation. “Oh shoot.”

“What's going on, Silver?”

Silver padded down his suit looking for any form of currency. “I need a ticket for the Styx Fare, but I’m out of Precious Seconds, so I'll have to give a blood sacrifice.”

“What?!”

“Unless… Hey does anybody have any spare change here?” Silver exclaimed to the rest of the bus. Which was filled with Silvers from all across time travelling from one time to another. They all nodded ‘no’ and shrugged. “Eh,” He waved them off, “Doesn't matter. Look...” He took a deep breath in…

… and out. “... Blaze, I'm on my way, but... I don't think I'll get there in time... you'll have to fix the time shift on your own. The bracelet on the gauntlet, turn it to the top setting. It should light up cyan, like my markings.”

“Silver, you said we don't want to unravel all of time in space! W- What if I do something wrong? I could make things worse!”

Silvers hologram grew in size to regular size. Silver’s green form stood in front of Blaze. He reached out his palm. Blaze met his with hers. And their fingers intertwined. She couldn't feel him, not his warmth, not his softness. “You can do this. You can do anything. I never wanted to burden you with all this, this was my weight to carry. You've always had to deal with so much, run this entire Queendom, protect to this dimension... deal with me. But when push comes to shove you always manage to do the impossible. Because you’re you. And I love that about you. If someone is depending on you, you will stop at nothing to succeed, through your willpower. And right now, your Queendom, your people, are depending on you. I'm depending on you, Jalapeno.”

The cat closed her eyes, took a deep breath in and out, and re-opened her eyes with new determination. “Alright, guide me.” She attempted to ignore the heat rising across her cheeks, it helped that Silver's face was getting red like a tomato too, his head bowed down and that silly smile stood strong on his face. “Tell me what to do.” She gave him a small smile as she gave him a command.

“First thing’s first, you'll need to slow the bug down.”

Marine piped type, “I'm on it!” The raccoon, young and fearless, charged at the bug ten times her size, screaming a war cry at the top of her lungs. The little raccoon had flung herself at the bug, grabbing its leg and started chopping at it with her meat cleaver. The parasite took notice and turned its head to her, its mouth opened and an acid like bile shot out. Marine managed to dodge in time. The moment the green bile hit the ground it sped up the time of that particular area turning the green flowery patch of grass into a barren dried up patch of desert. Next the bug spit something akin to the silk web. Marine once again dodged out of the way. This time, on impact, the web exploded and then imploded, dragging its surroundings into itself. Marine got another shot in as she flung the meat cleaver at the bug's head, which lodged itself in its head. That seemed to enrage the beast as it quickly charged at the raccoon and swiped at her knocking her away.

“MARINE!!!”

Blazes eyes flared up with flame and fire, boiling with rage, bursting into a cyclone of fire, flying into the bug launching it out of the castle grounds, skipping it like a stone across the pond. The bug crashed into the sands of the coastal beach at the edge of the island. Blaze rushed over to Marine, holding her in her arms, “Marine are you- are you okay?” She asked worried.

“I'm fine. My pride's hurt more than anything.” The raccoon got up as she coughed, “You focus on the timey whimey stuff, now it's personal.” She cracked her knuckles and neck. She pulled out a remote device from one of her skirt pockets. She ran off towards the bug.

The bug was getting its bearings, taking in its new setting, dozens of people were scattering in panic at the beach. “Hey! Over here!” The bug turned to see Marine standing on a ridge in front of it. The small raccoon donned a pair of sunglasses and smirked, “You messed with the wrong raccoon!” She pressed a collection of buttons on her remote. The bug heard a collection of noises from behind, coming from the ocean behind it. It turned back to see a whole naval armada standing by, all of the ships Marine ever built, all cannons pointing at the bug. All the dozens of ships she had constructed over the years, all her engineering prowess on display. From far away Blaze heard the booming of artillery shells and the lights over the horizon of rounds exploding on impact. Blaze just watched on in worry.

Silver spoke up, “Marine will be fine. She’s tough. She learned from you,” he comforted his partner, “But she won't be able to defeated it. She needs you for that.”

“What now?”

“Close your eyes. Reach out your hands. Willpower. Imagination. Imagine the timeline as a train track, it's disconnected from the rest of the rail, you need to pull the lever, you'll need to reconnect the tracks. It's like-- have you ever played with those little-- they're not Legos, Kinect, they had like little metallic balls-“

“I understand, Silver.” She smiled.

“You're pushing a block into place, you'll feel a ‘click’ when it's in place.” Blaze understood. Every muscle in her body tensed, more than usual, her feet anchored in the ground. She imagined the lever on the train tracks, she took hold of it, and pulled. She gritted her teeth. She felt the weight of the universe on her shoulders, the weight of time and space seemed infinite and impossible, it felt like her muscles would tear apart before she moved it an inch. But that did not stop her. Beyond the Herculean task she was in the process of, she focused on the sound of battle in the distance. Marine was out there doing her best trying to combat a being from beyond their reality, with no hope of winning. And yet she stood her ground. Blaze couldn't express how proud she was. That pride burned bright and warm in her heart. That bravery, that determination, that willpower, could those be qualities she taught her? Did she do a good job mentoring the girl? That pride within her, in the girl she looked after, powered her mind and spirit. She pulled and the world moved. Rumbles and tremors could be felt throughout all of time and space, through past, present, and future, even Silver felt the quakes realities away. She pulled on the quantum lever, she roared into the heavens as her person burst into a supernova, blasting a beam of fire into the sky.

One final pull and a BOOM resonated across all of time and space. She assumed that that was the ‘click’ Silver spoke of, as in her mind's eyes she now saw the train tracks aligned.

She opened her eyes. She began to breathe; she hadn't even realised that she was holding her breath. The flames faded. Without a hesitation the feline launched off with her hyper speed in search of Marine. “Marine!?! Marine?!” She zipped and zoomed across the beach in search of the young raccoon, “Mar! Mari!!?” She began to hyperventilate; her eyes began to water. There was no sign of the parasite, but there wasn't any sign of Marine eith-

Suddenly, a nearby pile of rubble began to shake and part. And from underneath it jumped out an excited raccoon, smiling ear to ear, arms in the air, “Wooooooooo!!!! Take that you dumb bug! You did it, B!”

Blaze quickly leapt at the young raccoon and embraced her in a big hug. “I was so worried. You're alright!”

“Psst, f course I'm okay.” She pointed at herself with her thumbs, “I'm the best! Smartest mammal on the earth! HA!”

Beep. Beep.

It was the watch communicator, Blaze once again tapped the blinking blue screen, and Silver’s visage appeared again. “Blazey! MarMar! Are- Are you all right?! What happened?!”

“It's alright, Silvy. We're safe. We did it.”

“We kicked that bug’s butt! Woooo!” Marina punched the air in excitement.

“Ha! See!? I told you you could do it! You're a natural!” He gave Blaze a smile, she smiled back.

“Dude, we need to celebrate! With ice cream!”

“Sounds lovely.” She rolled her eyes, “How long until you get here?” She asked Silver.

“Few hours. Save some chocolate chip for me! Don't let her eat all of it this time!”

😓 - Choosing between two spoilers 👀 Definitely the two assholes who were with Salome when she ran away. They promised to take her to Florida(?) where she could catch a ferry, but they fully intended to rob her.

They teamed up against Darrell and although he used to be in the Marines, he's not in top shape anymore. Safe to say he got tossed around, stabbed, and punched a whole bunch. He won in the end of course. Shoved one's head through a van window and sawed his neck open with the glass shards stuck to the door.

👯‍♂️ - I kinda like the idea that he's inadvertently had an early morning coffee and a smoke with "Rusty Nail" from the Joy Ride movies. Just a one time encounter where neither of them realized the other was a killer 😅 Bonus points if they walk away from their conversation deciding "that fella was nice".

🏆 What do you wish more authors in your fandom would write about?

ooh a good one. let's see. a big one is i wish there were more stories tackling nile as she unlearns all the stuff she's internalized being from the US. @nevermindirah did a great job in "i see your eyes seek a distant shore" of having nile confront the realities of what being a marine is, but i want more. it's a really intimidating and all-encompassing subject, so i get why people hesitate to touch it, but maybe it can be more of a little bit at a time adding to a tidal wave. add some stuff here and there to fic with otherwise different plots. etc. thinking aloud here. i include myself in this criticism, i don't think as much fun as i have doing it my general mockery of US americans really counts.

less intense wishes: booker's dad-ness, so many words are spent on nicky being team mom, but there's a literal parent in the group that people just seem to forget sometimes?

and you know, a wider variety of ways for nile and booker to get together. just every trope, i want it all. i'm not saying i hate the popular ones now, i just want more. greedy.

ha, without question the number one is booker/joe/nicky. no thanks, don't want it, don't like it. obviously this is more out of a concern for booker than the integrity of j/n because blorbo-focus etc, but yes i don't like it for many many reasons. it’s a very old school fandom feeling thing, where you just smash all the attractive men together for Ultra Slash Potential. also when it’s paired with andy/quỳnh in a story, and then nile’s just....alone. without comment on whether or not she likes that. it makes me sad/angry.

also to a somewhat lesser extent, andy/booker beyond platonic hookups. and on a meta level, nile/generic girlfriend no other info is given on so she can be out of the way of the stuff the author really cares about. like why even bother.

10. How would you describe your writing process?

Very planning-heavy. There’s a ton of spitballing with friends on the topic, but usually if I get an idea, I’ll let it marinate a bit > finish an outline (which takes the most thought because actually Plotting A Story alongside technical details) > edit outline (for things like pacing and consistency) > rough draft > editing the rough draft (pruning and rewording and occasionally adding things) > letting it sit so I forget some of it > proofreading for shit like spelling errors. I also pre-write my author’s notes (they are always long i am very sorry) and title/summary/tagging stuff. As you can probably guess, I am an extremely slow writer when it comes to words per day.

Bear in mind this is only for more involved stories- multichaps or long oneshots. I absolutely am guilty of just writing by the seat of my pants for 1k-ish oneshots and other things. Somethings u just gotta crank one of ‘em out in a night and plaster it on the internet after only editing once.

17. Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?

Ough this is a tough one. There’s always going to be information lost, whether it be in what the environment looks like or in motivations or other intent. In terms of people perceiving it differently? Honestly, one of the hardest things to balance for, say, Soul-Stricken, was “I want the readers to be able to pick up what I’m putting down, but I also want them to think” and it’s... well, I sure hope I succeeded. Especially since re-reading value was something I consciously focused on for it.

As for surprises... hmm. I like to think my motivations are pretty transparent? I’ll be the first to admit most of my tastes in tropes, both fandom-specific and in general, tend to be niche; I’m writing the ideas I love, first and foremost, and those just happen to diverge from common fanon most of the time.

There is a little bit of spite inherent in my motivations, not gonna lie, but that’s the case for every genfic writer I know, since most fandoms are extremely ship-centric (ahit is one of the blessed exceptions).

(though I am curious what readers think of my motivations now, hmmm)

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

Legit there are Layers to the whole deal with Snatcher/Luka and Apolonia regarding selfishness and responsibility. Luka stayed because of his sense of duty to his clan, and his wife-to-be, and to the forest- he wasn’t selfish enough, and it hurt him. Y’all already know how that turned out. Apolonia ran from her responsibility to chase her own happiness, leaving her family and friends behind to cut all ties, and that responsibility caught up to her; she thinks all of Clan Pryce is dead except for her and her children, and she was the only surviving Clan Head available to do the duties of one for the remnants that made it to Alpine- she was too selfish, and it hurt her. (Also special mention to the crown being left behind deliberately in the cellar because Subcon is no longer attached to Omnoc- just like mother dearest wanted, except nothing like she wanted)

ANYWAYS ON LESS DEPRESSING META STUFF I enjoyed being cheeky in the in-universe excerpts and how they connected to the actual events of the stories. Special mention to the Magic Boom in Thrice-Cursed, and the one in ch1 of Soul-Stricken, because the incongruence between how other ghosts work and how Snatcher works doesn’t get solidly revealed as a plot point until chapter 4. Although there are quite a few other hints about Snatcher’s nature scattered around, you just have to look for him.

(Also Brigid Larsen exists to be a bit of a meta easter egg, as the author of quite a few of the excerpts in Thrice-Cursed- which have good guesses for what may have happened during the Fall of Subcon! But their weakness is that they make too much sense lmao)

the main issue with answering this ask is that to get into my thoughts on dean’s childhood revolves around a lot of topics people don’t want to see on their feeds. because the fact of the matter is, genuinely, dean did not have a childhood   &   what he experienced during his formative years absolutely left traumas you see in his character throughout the course of the show   (   some which seem to get better with some help   &   some of which never go addressed, even more so some of which are still leaving unmitigated severe repercussions on who he is as a person   ).   now some of this is direct canon   &   others is based on conjecture from things dean has alluded to in canon, so I will explain to the best of my abilities; I could talk on this topic for ages   &   never actually reach a point where I feel as if I properly explained it all please bear with me   (   pretty sure this was just supposed to be a throwaway topic I’m sorry for the fact it turned into a monster answer lmao   ).

trigger warnings   for talk about death / trauma, child abuse, prostitution,   &   self harm   (   starvation, etc   ).   also warnings for mentions of weapons   (   guns   ),   fire, alcohol, ableism   &   a multitude of illegal activities   (   stealing, fraud, etc   ).   please do not read this if you are not going to take note of the warnings I tried to make sure I got even the little things.

for starters anyone who knows the basics of the show knows this much: dean, his father   (   john   )   &   his younger brother   (   sam   )   became hunters due to the death of his mother   (   mary   )   when dean was four years old   (   sam, at the time, was four months   ).   this is not only the driving force behind the “why” of the series but is also a pivotal moment in what was to become dean's life. 

dean saw his mother burning alive in his brother’s room. he saw it. this isn’t a debate   &   he was four years old as his home burned   &   his father goes off the rails   &   he’s holding his younger brother   &   now home is the back of his father’s car as they travel from motel to motel   &   john is finding out about all the monsters out there   &   he's learning to be a hunter   (   putting his training from the marines as a vietnam war vet to use   )   while chasing down the thing that killed his wife. this means leaving his sons alone in motel rooms across the country   (   because most other hunters are also not fully right   &   john doesn't trust people   ).   dean, a child himself, is now no longer such. he is now a mother   &   a father to his younger brother   (   learning to cook   &   clean   &   change diapers   &   keep a child entertained   )   while also being a tool for his father   (   intense training from the moment john learned about monsters to also be a hunter, to protect his brother always first   &   foremost. “daddy’s little soldier”   ).   it is impossible to talk about his childhood without acknowledging these two things, specifically,   &   where they originate: sam will always come first   &   to john, dean was a means to an end before he was a son.

          mary    —

as stated above it's kind of incredibly important to take into consideration the effect mary's death had on dean as a whole. for starters we know that dean, when experiencing severe trauma, falls back on selective mutism   (   as a recurring theme   )   &   that he is often   (   forced   )   to push past it for those around him   (   john would not tolerate such behavior   &   sam needed dean to “function” in order to survive   ).   the phrase “broken” comes up a lot in regards to dean, both in what he has done   &   what people need from him. we never experience a moment where people are tolerant of the ways dean closes in on himself   &   deals with traumas   (   often he is berated for coping methods whether they are good or bad, which leads to the real belief dean forces himself through not talking because his father made sure dean understood it was behavior he would not stand for   ).   this in   &   of itself is enough to push the understanding that mary's memory is also a drive for dean, but in a different sense then it was for john. we know that dean had told himself numerous times “she would be proud of me” or “I am making her proud” / etc in order to work through the horrible situations he was put in growing up   (   which has its own horrifying conclusion that is irrelevant to this meta so I digress   )   —   she was often the memory that got him through. john was a furious force of nature working under the drive of “avenge mary” “find her killer”   &   so on enough to not only neglect his sons but also ban the topic of her from their “home”   (   if you can call the backseat of the impala   &   motel rooms “home”   ).   dean was not allowed to speak of her around their father, but sam’s memories of his mother all come from what his brother told him   &   we know dean fought with himself constantly to “properly” remember her   (   but god, bit by bit he lost her   )   in the process. which of course leads into the second part of this all   —

          john   —

the easiest way to depict the vast difference in john as a father   &   john as the man dean grew up following is the fact it's not “dad” to john’s face, it’s “sir”   —   many people have talked at length   (   both in canon   &   real people online   )   about dean's relationship with his father. the general consensus seems to be “john did his best” in a crappy situation because he loves his sons   &   that “dean knows that” with no one ever touching on “dean was a child who experienced severe trauma at a young age” which resulted in him latching onto the only parent he had left when that same person, at the same moment, stopped choosing to be a parent. instead of his father treating dean like the child he was, john needed someone to “step up   &   back him up”   &   dean was a   (   tragically   )   convenient presence to fulfill that need; both the fact sam needed watching   &   john needed a “second” he could trust. I am by no means saying john didn't love his sons   —   I fully believe he did   —   but that doesn't excuse the actions he took “raising” them   (   &   i say that lightly because john did barely any raising it was mostly conditioning, dean raised himself   &   his brother alone   ).   it is not a healthy or solid foundation for a relationship.

john was the equivalent of a drill sergeant dean's whole life who never thought dean met his standards   (   as shown from the multiple instances we see of john berating a young dean to be better be faster be smarter “you would have gotten your brother killed” “always listen to me”   ).   from the moment john became aware of all that goes bump in the night so, too, did dean. I cannot reiterate this enough: dean was a child   &   his father raised him as a soldier to fight monsters   &   never, never question his commands   —   I would argue it is a form of non purposeful brainwashing but that’s a larger argument for later. this training, though, isn't just physical weapons   (   dean has scarily accurate marksmanship   &   is incredibly proficient with a blade, ignoring skills in hand to hand combat   )   but also in illegal activities such as credit card fraud, hustling pool,   &   the like. dean is good at faking it because that's what was required of him   &   he has it ingrained to appear the way his father demanded.   &   that doesn't even touch on the other issues including   (   known   )   child abuse   (   punishment when dean didn't meet his fathers standards or messed up in the many ways a child will mess up, especially with all this   )   to round out deans   (   trauma based   )   idolization of his father. the same father who, once, left dean in a boys home with the phrase “I’m not coming for him, he can rot there”   (   what it's like to be a teenager whose father threw you away for following orders, caught stealing to feed his brother   ). 

while dean certainly understands the issues with his father   (   &   is shown, occasionally, to speak about them to himself   &   acknowledge john was a shitty parent who put him in a bad position all his life   )   that doesn’t change the mentality dean grew up with due to his father’s treatment, which circles back to the third point   —

          sam   —

sam will, no matter what, always be dean’s first priority. the lengths dean has gone to to always put sam before anything else are massive   &   hard to place into the word limit. this is in part based on the responsibilities john placed on dean his whole life   —   it is always “take care of sam”   (   never has it ever been expected that dean is to take care of himself, because in this he is unimportant   ).   the way deans young mind latched onto that, then the ways john punished him when he did not follow that, made sure even into his old age dean kept true to the statement “take care of sam”   (   because sam is, again, what is important   ). 

now dean was a child taking care of and raising a child   (   beyond himself   ).   there are things a child needs: food, shelter, clothing, etc. these things require money, which is not something a child has abundant amounts of to throw around   &   fulfill these needs. john used to leave them in motel rooms with not enough money to last because he would be gone longer than expected   (   just one example of how resourceful dean can be from how far he learned to stretch that money   ).   we know from this that dean has   (   often   )   chosen to starve himself so that sam has something to eat, unable to afford food for them both past what john left for them. we also know when the money would run out he would find other ways in which to get more   (   for things like the motel room, school, ect   )   by   (   as alluded to   )   prostituting himself, lying about his age to get into bars   (   to hustle pool mostly though we also know he can play a number of card games   ),   &   just generally stealing. it was stealing food, specifically, that has gotten him caught in the past   (   &   reprimanded by john when john found out   );   all of which is on top of, should john come home early while dean was out finding food or money, he would be reprimanded for leaving sam alone. every failure in raising sam was punishable. 

but dean also worked to make sure sam had options. he made sure sam spent as many years growing up “normal” as possible   (   hiding the monsters   &   the hunting until sam learned the truth from poking around   ),   going on field trips   &   making friends   (   going to school with the right supplies, doing his homework, etc   ).   all of these are things dean, himself, is not allowed to have   &   never seeks out for himself   (   as he sees it as “selfish” since it would take away from sam   ).   starting to get the picture   ?   it is in part why sam leaving for college both hit as hard as it did   (   “sam no longer needs me the same way I need him” since sam is, often, the driving force behind dean’s push to keep going   )   &   proud   (   “sam will have opportunities”   &   that's what dean has always wanted for him, as essentially sam real parental figure   ).   only now sam is gone   &   john doesn’t need dean anymore, now does he   ?

while not entirely related here we know this mentality is also why dean was willing to sell his soul in exchange for sam's life.

          other   —

something about the fact dean was never put first by either of them both, lived with the expectation he did things because they are used to him doing those things   (   john expected them   &   sam never knew better, dean was good at hiding who he was / is   ),   is important to note. we know his childhood has left him with rather severe self worth issues. he does not think himself intelligent   (   even though we know he is which I will not get into here, but between his father   &   co. calling him a grunt   &   the teachers in school writing him off + dean dropping out once he could to work to keep sam fed / housed / ect while helping their father did not help fix that perception   ).   he does not think himself worth peoples time   (   everyone is always leaving him behind, so he is clearly only worth what he can offer them in return   ).   he is also suicidal   (   building off previous points   )   &   will purposefully punish himself for perceived wrongs   (   we often see him pick a fight, drink, starve himself, refuse sleep, amongst other more bloody options   ). 

dean had an absent   (   often drunk   )   abusive father, a younger brother who thinks he knows best   (   &,   while I think this is not intentional on sam’s part, he takes a lot of advantage of dean because of this   ),   no real friends   (   he grew up alone without any help outside an occasional visit to bobby's scrap yard or pastor jim’s church; john chased away most people in the hunting community   )   because he stopped trying to at school. we know he started sleeping around   &   drinking before he was of age   (   the sex seemingly a coping mechanism over the fact dean is both touch starved   &   has never really experienced someone loving / caring for him but that’s a meta for another day. the alcohol because it was what everyone around him was doing ie: other hunters   ). 

here I could talk about how dean doesn’t have people who stay, in his experience. I could talk about how all of this has led to his sense of responsibility   &   lack of understanding of “love” as a concept. I could go into his codependency on sam   (   that is NOT reciprocated in the same sense, because sam will always be dean's kid while dean will always be sam’s caregiver. their relationship is not on even footing but again something for later   ).   I think what is most important to talk about, in conclusion, is that with everything dean has experienced he learned at a really young age the importance of a lie. because a lie is what keeps cps from taking sam away   (   &   dean, too, but again he doesn't see himself as anything worth noting   ),   lying is what kept food in sams belly   &   a roof over sams head   &   people off their backs. dean is a disarming smile on a pretty face that he learned to weaponize as a means of survival. none of his childhood is anything he sees as worth noting so, most of the time, everyone around him doesn’t know   (   it is not like john treated him as enough to seemingly even understand the weight he placed on dean's shoulders   )   because he learned the best ways to hide it. a bruise is dropping a book on his face, a broken arm is tripping down the stairs, his father missing is “for work”   (   even if it's the bar down the street   ).   he is proficient at forging signatures not to make fake ids but to sign report cards. he is light on his feet   &   has fast reflexes because stealing a loaf of bread is just as important as dodging the swipe of a werewolf. it's a terrible childhood, really   (   no wonder he suppresses it   ).
