PINNED POST
Context for my blog:
I started this in 2020 following an intense hyperfixation based around what I dub the 'Kemamoto-mura gang': Keizou/Nathaniel, Fumiaki/Kenny, Yukiko/Lucy, Mariko/Kelly and Fuyunyan/Hovernyan - my main blog is @tousakamis , and my ao3 is @makochiu ! (with this in mind, please note many of my posts and older fics were written in 2020 and a lot has changed since this initial hyperfixation, but I keep things up for archival purposes!)
I often refer to characters with their Japanese names because I got into the franchise when the second games had only just released in Japan and thus the Japanese names just sort of stuck in my memory, but I will always respond to their English names (and for some characters I swap between the two)!
Beyond the Kemamoto-mura gang, my favourite characters are the Koma brothers, Hanako Noroino/Foiletta, Touma Tsukinami, Buck and Hailey-Anne!
I colloquially dub the 8th of February as 'Fumizou Day' as it was my first public post about the two characters which remain the center of my hyperfixation, so if anyone sees me talking about this please know it's more of a personal tradition than anything else - though, if anyone ever wants to join in even if it's just a singular post, I'd be absolutely honoured!
All my AUs are in this post!
While I do have posts exploring headcanons for the Kemamoto-mura gang on this very blog, it's been roughly four or five years since I first made those posts... I don't have much faith in 14 year old Alina to effectively demonstrate my headcanons and choices for this group of characters, and so I wanted to make a post offering quick summaries and explanations for anyone who may be confused or curious as to my choices.
I know as well that I am definitely not the spokesperson for these characters nor am I the only one to have headcanons for them (I might jokingly call myself the Fumizou CEO but that's been a running joke since I was once again 14), so please know my ask box is always open for people to ask questions and discuss/debate/share headcanons. This doesn't just count for the Kemamoto-mura gang either - while they are 100% my niche in Youkai Watch, I have a lot of untapped love for other characters and I'm always open to any questions or discussions!
Headcanons below:
Nathaniel Adams:
12 years old, lives by himself
Depending on the work, his parents are either wholly absent or only his mother is present - his parents are depicted as neglectful in my later works and his mother is depicted as abusive in earlier works (this, I will admit, was reflective of my youthful amateurish writing). This plays on the fact that in the whole second game, there is no mention or recognition of Nathaniel's parents being present or caring for him and it can therefore be presumed that Hovernyan is his only real support system. I often play on this as reason for him being very independent and determined to be a hero, because while it is canonically due to wanting to defend friends, I also like to factor in that he may feel as if he is all he has to rely on.
He can be quite snappy and rude, which leans close to canon, but I like to show him as being quite mellow or childishly playful around Hovernyan in comparison to others due to their closer bond
Kenny Forester:
12 years old, lives with family and moved to Kemamoto-mura at age 12
Can see youkai if he is a companion to Nathaniel and not the grandfather role - I wanted to play on the fact that he is Katie's grandfather and if you play as her he is gifted with that bond with youkai, and the fact that both Guts F and Guts K exist in later games such as Youkai Watch 3 rather than just Guts K being the 'correct' grandparent. Therefore, whether he has the watch or not, I wanted to write him with a unique bond with youkai either way; otherwise, what is the point of such a cute medallium entry? ("He was a boy that loved Yo-kai so much that he became one himself. That love still spreads through hundreds of Yo-kai friends.")
Friendly, playful, polite and enthusiastic to befriend Nathaniel, though... I try to write this in a way which makes him feel just as mysterious and confusing as it does friendly and endearing. In every work of mine, I try to give him this somewhat unsettling and confusing air - like, why CAN he see youkai, why is it that in every universe par the canon one he is drawn to the one boy destined to create the youkai watch, what is his whole deal? I want it to feel as if his existence is an unanswered question sometimes, but Nathaniel is too happy to just have a friend that he doesn't pry. I guess this plays into the fact that he's, in itself, an alternative universe watcher and he doesn't exist in what is classified as the 'correct' universe with Nate as the protagonist? Therefore he's not really meant to exist in Nathaniel's universe anyway, but despite that, he perseveres.
He and Kelly are the two characters which veer most into OC territory as I wanted them to feel different from Nathaniel/Lucy, but I do try to lean into canon elements of his personality as well, like the way he bickers with Nathaniel and a passion for moxie/guts and stuff like that
Lucy Adams:
12 years old, Nathaniel's neighbour and childhood best friend
She remains fairly close to canon in all my works - a sweet, friendly girl that sticks close to Nathaniel and teases him just as much as she cheers him on, also with a weirdly unexplained bond with youkai (because loving a watcher does that to you!)
However, in quite a few of my works, I try to play around with her character since she and Kelly don't have all that much in canon to work with in the first place - I like to show her matching Nathaniel's adventurous spirit and fierce moral code of defending people, for example. I want to explore her more, so perhaps I'll update this in future with more little tidbits about her character?
Kelly Forester:
12 years old, Lucy's classmate who has lived in Kemamoto-mura her whole life
I headcanon her as a trans girl with a fierce defensiveness over Lucy and a playful one-sided rivalry with Nathaniel which usually just leads to banter and teasing. Her transness is, in part, a headcanon which stemmed from my own untapped gender issues as a teenager, so it's one of those which has just always stuck because while I'm transmasc, having a character to weave the beauty of transness in youth into is very meaningful to me :-)
In my works she and Kenny... don't really interact that much? This was a completely unintentional thing, and while it definitely brings up questions of continuity in the grand scheme of things (like how tf does Katie exist), we ignore that. I'll probably play around with their bond more in my works! She and Kenny are the ones that feel most OC-like but I try to draw on canon alongside headcanons LOL
Hovernyan:
Nathaniel's best friend and youkai companion through thick and thin
One of my favourite things to do with Hovernyan is place that silly, bantering and ridiculous side of him shown in the movie and sometimes in the games next to a wistful, deep, brooding wanderer with a lot under the surface (which is brought to the light because of how a wandering spirit stayed stagnant for his human friend). He and Nathaniel have a bond which is rich in potential, namely in the forms of angst, and I like to play on the fact that they both adore each other and bring out the best in each other when they play around but also that underlying awareness especially on Hovernyan's side that their time is limited and Hovernyan just wants to care for Nathaniel and keep him safe while also not messing with fate too much.
Therefore, he will sometimes go on wistful, deep analysis's of his friend in my fics, right before going back to banter and teasing. I like to position him as a more logical and 'intelligent' figure than Nathaniel but also demonstrate that he, too, is just a silly goofball underneath that guise of put-togetherness

Diary of a Junebug
Tumblr media
Ice cream sweets, cotton candy candles, and colorful ceramics
A collaboration between Milkcloud and Flickering Dreams is everything I could have hoped for and more. Plus, it’s an honor to host an event at the camp to celebrate the launch, as well as what could be the start of many more fun projects in the future.
Junia and Kati have been working on these designs for months and it’s understandable why they’re proud of their creations. Kati made these colorful and whimsical ice cream themed candle holders to go with Junia’s ice cream and cotton candy scented candles. You can buy them separate or as a set to brighten up any cozy space. Knowing me, I’m a sucker for soft pastels, so I had to get some. All the designs are so pretty, it took me over an hour to finally settle on two, and that was not easy! The ones I chose was the peachy dreams and strawberry boba.
Of course, what’s a celebration without good company? Of course, Nina and Millie are here, as well as Maddie. And we also got some visitors from abroad too - Sumi, Eloise, Kana, and Meggie. The four of them just finished with a mission and decided to stick around since Sumi and Kana wanted to visit some places around the area. The camp is towards the direction they’re traveling so they’re staying here for a couple days.
From what I remember, the four of them often travel for work - Sumi’s a courier, Eloise is a reporter, Kana’s a fashion designer, and Meggie’s an astrologist. The reason why they’re traveling is because there’s a fashion show in Owlfeather Park next week and Kana wants to check it out. A quick check tells me that Owlfeather Park is south of the camp, and if traveling by train like they are, it’s a 9 hour ride. Since they’ve been on the road a lot, and they have the time, it makes sense to take it easy for a couple days as long travels can be draining.
Sumi often accompanies Kana on her travels so she can see more of the world, which she says helps her become a better courier. Ever since her company went international, it’s important for her to be able to adapt to traveling to all sorts of different places. Although it’s unlikely that her work will extend beyond the Celestine Onyx - which refers to the 7 nations under the alliance - Bonsai, Yuexing, Sango, Adrikha, Marippe, Sazona, and Melovka - Sumi wants to keep her mind as sharp as possible. I’ve heard that she’s pretty good at figuring out the lay of the land no matter how unfamiliar the terrain is, so even if she does get lost, it won’t take long for her to get back on track.
Although most missions regarding the guild are usually limited to the borders of the Celestine Onyx, there are some occasions where they dispatch people for missions outside of that jurisdiction, though that depends on your rank and status. Connie, being an outlander, is granted these privileges, and so that’s another perk for joining their party. Kana said that’s what made her accept Connie’s offer after turning down so many similar proposals. Yeah, I imagine that would be something to use as leverage that allows you to distinguish yourself from other like-minded adventurers.
As it turns out, Maddie, Eloise, and Meggie know each other because they’re in similar circles. Eloise is a reporter for The Peregrine, also known as the center of Marippe’s news, so it’s safe to say that she’s well connected. When The Peregrine pops up, most people immediately think of people like Eloise. She’s one of those reporters who go above and beyond, which inevitably brings trouble, though she refuses to let that stop her from getting down to the truth. Like Kana, she stands by her principles, and if that makes her an enemy, well, such is fate.
Meggie is a writer for an astrology journal that’s published monthly. She said she originally came on as a guest writer, only to unexpectedly end up popular not just with other fellow astrologists, but casual audiences as well. Layla, who’s studying in that field, is a huge fan of Meggie’s works, often using them in her research. Even though she can get technical - which makes sense because it is more on the academia side - she writes about various topics in a way that makes it engaging and interesting.
Maddie’s also a journalist, though for a small independent outlet, nothing in the same league as The Peregrine, she says. However, she has corresponded with them and is acquainted with Eloise. In fact, before arriving at the camp, Eloise and Maddie stopped by somewhere for an exclusive interview with someone who had stepped away from the public decades ago. I’ve heard a bit about that as it’s become a bit of a hot topic, and so we were interested in what they got out of that conversation.
Earlier this month, former child actor and musician Christoph Starr of The Starr Family band released a memoir about the family’s fame. From what I’ve heard, the his story’s not too different in terms of the dark side of show business, especially for a child, and how things are rarely as harmonious on screen and stage as in real life. Thankfully, he didn’t wind up like most child stars and teen idols who fell by the wayside, mainly because the attention was more on his older brothers, so he was able to slip into obscurity when the show and the band’s recording career finished.
The reason why it’s getting attention is because of his older brother Dan, who is intent on refuting the autobiography. To sum it up, the book doesn’t paint him in a positive light for many reasons and he felt attacked. Dan and eldest brother Keith became teen idols and they developed big egos about it. Predictably, they’ve lived tumultuous lives thanks to their stardom and are known for being temperamental and arrogant.
There’s a lot that Dan is throwing a fuss about, the hot topic in particular has to do with their older sister Laurie, who is estranged from the family. She also faded into obscurity, but for completely different reasons that have to do with her Keith and Dan. Basically, they got a hold of her diary, found some stuff they could use against her, and had parts of it published in a local paper as blackmail. She obviously never forgave them, especially after she was targeted by various hate groups when she was outed.
Since this was over 50 years ago, they kinda buried the incident and the family just acted like it never happened. Their mother, Joan, who helped with the memoir, regretted telling Laurie to get over it and put those thoughts regarding questioning her sexuality out of her head. In other words, she told her to stop being gay, which does absolutely nothing and just further alienated Laurie to the point that she cut herself off from the family. Christoph and younger sister Tracy were kept in the dark about Laurie for the most part, and part of the reason why he brought it up in the memoir was to hopefully bring more clarity to what happened and try to make amends.
So far, no comment by Laurie, though Christoph said she’s aware of what’s going on. He rarely agrees to interviews, though after doing some research on Eloise, he felt that she was trustworthy enough. Like they said, she gets right down to business. Maddie came along to help her out and he allowed that after seeing that she’s trustworthy too.
Obviously they can’t reveal too much, other than he was kind and gave a lot of insights that won’t get just by reading the book alone. It really is fortunate that he was able to step away from the spotlight and live a fairly uneventful and quiet life without being burdened by stardom. Because he was the second youngest, he didn’t receive as much attention compared to his older siblings, which he was completely fine with as it allowed him to have a somewhat more normal childhood than most. The public may have dubbed him and Tracy the forgotten Starrs, but considering how their brothers ended up, their obscurity was the best thing that could’ve happened to them. Good to know that not all child stars don’t end up falling.
Like I said, the main purpose of the interview, like with the memoir, is to make amends with Laurie. I don’t blame her for feeling betrayed because outing someone is never acceptable. I haven’t read the book nor know too much about The Starr Family, so I can’t say if I agree or disagree with how they handled the situation, Like, I get they were somewhat on the conservative side and things were a lot different back then regarding views on lesbianism, but making someone feel ashamed of being themselves is not the right way to go about it. At least Joan seems to have come to understand that, which was why she gave her son her blessing to open up about it. From what I gather, she doesn’t seem to be the overly pushy show business parent - she’s made a lot of mistakes and poor choices, but it appears that she does care about the wellbeing of her kids more than stardom.
Anyway, so a lot of the interview involved refuting Dan’s claims as he thinks the whole thing was self-inflicted on Laurie’s part, as well as talk about the dangers of outing someone. In other words, it’s her own fault for writing out her thoughts in private. Um, okay. Whatever you say. Somehow he thinks he’s the victim and being gay is wrong, yadda, yadda, yadda. It’s already bad enough that he’s a stuck up bitch and apparently he’s a bigot too? I’d say he should shut up forever.
Eloise plans to use the downtime at the camp to write up a rough draft while the interview’s still fresh in her mind. I’ve heard about her impressive work ethic, so it’s another thing to see it for myself. No joke, she could easily pump out an essay in a couple hours! She’s definitely gonna have the whole thing ready for publication before heading to Owlfeather.
Junia feels for Laurie as she’s dealing with something similar with her brother, who’s also a bigot with a big ego. Had Junia not decided to come out to her parents, she knows for sure that if her brother found out first, he would not hesitate to out her. She’s lucky that her parents and grandma accepted her for who she is with an open mind, though it did take them some time to adjust because it was all so foreign to them. Too bad most families can’t be accepting like that, which is a fucking shame.
It ties into Kana’s philosophy of you can’t help but be who you are. She grew up in a culture where people would prefer that you’d fit neatly into some box. Be this, but not too much. Act like this, not this? Why? Because we said so. Oh, so you want to do things your own way? Wrong! Something’s wrong with you, but we’re not gonna tell you because you should figure it out yourself! Damn, it’s tough living such a stifling existence. Luckily, Kana says her parents were a lot more open minded and pretty much gave her free rein to do whatever she wanted, even if it annoyed the elders. If she wasn’t allowed to live her life on her own terms, she never would’ve become the famous fashion designer taking on the world by storm.
I think the best way to sum it up is don’t let others make you feel ashamed for being yourself. If they have a problem with you and the way you express yourself, that’s on them. Being different, whether it’s being gay, trans, nonbinary, neurodivergent, etc, is not a personality flaw or something that needs to be fixed contrary to what some people think.
There’s nothing like crafting and having deep conversations to pass the time. By crafting, I mean making ice cream, which I guess is more like cooking? We did do some actual crafting too, mainly little trinkets like stitch markers and paperweights. It’s one of those stash busting kind of things where we just used whatever bits and bobs we had lying around, which was a lot of fun!
Kana and I bonded over making clothes, her with sewing and me with knitting. I’ve been meaning to make my own stitch markers, mainly because I keep breaking the plastic ones. I know I’m a tight knitter but do I really have such a tight grip? To be fair, they are kinda cheap - they came with my interchangeable set, which is also on the cheap side, but still? Also, I just want an excuse to use my small collection of cute beads and charms, especially after seeing other people’s cute DIY stitch markers online with their WIPs.
Making ice cream was definitely the highlight of this little event. We were obviously inspired by the collab, making cute pastel inspired ice cream treats. We used various berries for flavoring as well as color, making sundaes and ice cream sandwiches. We made more than enough to take home, and I packed them in a lot of ice so they could withstand the long trip back.
Since we haven’t done a contest in forever, I figured, why not throw one now? Everyone put their own spin on their ice cream creations, so it was fun seeing what everyone came up with. I was inspired by Junia and Kati’s strawberry boba candle set, so I made strawberry vanilla black tea ice cream.
Kana made red bean paste and also used strawberries and black tea, taking some elements from taiyaki, her favorite dessert. Meggie used an assortment of fruits and nuts, resulting in a colorful creation she calls a fruit salad sundae. Maddie combined her two favorites, cookies and cream and coconut, which go really well together. Nina went for a tropical theme inspired by Junia and Kati’s pineapple citrus breeze, coming up with a blood orange and pineapple sorbet. Junia, taking inspiration from the collaboration as well, making a peach, mango, apricot, and matcha ice cream. Sumi added cherry blossom flavored mochi to vanilla and matcha swirl ice cream with assorted berries. Kati added caramel and cinnamon to go with her apple pie inspired treat. Eloise put her own spin on peaches and cream by adding matcha and almond cookie crumbs. Daisy Jane made a vanilla latte flavored ice cream with hazelnuts and chocolate chips. Millie went all out with her own spin on Neapolitan, but instead of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, she made blueberry muffin, asian pear and dragonfruit, and strawberry lemonade.
Later on, I was feeling a bit adventurous and tried my hand at fried ice cream. Turns out I was a bit too ambitious and got a bit of a gloopy mess. Tasted good though, just not worth taking a picture of. At least I know with practice, I’ll get it someday!

Translation under the cut!
Akigumi Etude - Valentine's Day Story of High Schoolers
Banri: ...Looks like it’s starting.
’Sup. It’s Akigumi from MANKAI Company.
Comment: I’ve been waiting for this!
Comment: I voted in the survey
Omi: Thanks for the voting.
Juza: I wonder which theme‘s been decided.
Taichi: Even we don’t know what’s the result, so it’s kinda exciting~!
Banri: Guess I gotta hurry and announce it then. Our theme’s gonna be...
“Valentine’s Day Story of High Schoolers”.
Comment: Brilliant lmao
Azami: Ain’t possible for this old geezer to act as a high schooler.
Sakyo: What did you just say?
Omi: Seems like casting will be decided through this lottery. Here, pull one.
Juza: Mine’s... I see.
Banri: Hey, this just got even more difficult.
Azami: ...Seems hard to express this one.
Comment: I wonder what kind of role is it?
Comment: So excited
Sakyo: Let’s hurry up and get started.
Banri: Damn, guess I gotta do it with the flow then.
Aight guys, we’re starting the Etude now.
—————
Juza: “This day has finally come...!”
Azami: “What are you talkin’ about?”
Juza: “Isn’t it obvious? Today’s Valentine’s Day, a sacred day that comes once a year!”
“I wanna get some chocolates from Angel-chan, the Madonna of the school!”
Azami: “Hmm, so she’s that cute?”
Juza: “Yeah! Those cute eyes of her can make ANY man fall on their knees.”
“Angel-chan, when will she come~?”
Taichi: “Hey, what was that about Angel-chan?”
Juza: “The heck, Taichi’s here? Man, I don’t wanna interact with this annoying guy~”
Taichi: “A frivolous guy like YOU won’t ever get a chocolate from Angel-chan.”
“Learn your place, buddy.”
Azami: “He sure acts tough... This type of delinquent still exists?”
Juza: “Hah! Girls would never give their chocolate to a delinquent like YOU nowadays.”
Taichi: “Jokes on you! I actually received some already~”
“There’s one from Yukko, Marippe, Sacchan and also from Yocchan!”
Azami: “Those nicknames sounded like they came from a Yankee manga...”
Banri: “Hey, be quieter. I’m trying to link my thoughts with the universe here.”
Taichi: “What the heck are you tryin’ to link for? ’Sides, d’you even get a chocolate?”
Banri: “It’s just a chunk of jet black, yet receiving one or not makes you feel emotional roller coaster...”
“You guys are still children, I see.”
“I’m crazy for not being interested in Valentine’s Day even though I’m a high schooler?”
“I take that as a compliment, thank you.”
Taichi: “I haven’t got a clue of what you were sayin’ at all.”
Juza: “As usual, Settsu sure is a weird guy.”
Azami: “Eh? Ah, yeah...”
Omi: “What’re you guys talking about?”
Juza: “Valentine’s Day!”
“Surely the popular guy Omi-kun received lots of chocolates, right?”
Omi: “No... I refused all of them this year just to get Angel-chan’s.”
Taichi: “Seriously?!”
Omi: “The number of sacrifices I’ve made is different than you guys.”
Taichi: “Tch...”
Juza: “He sure is on a whole different level than us...”
Sakyo: “Excuse me, what are you all doing here?”
“That is a path that you are standing on. You will be a bother to other students if you keep chatting there.”
Azami: “Here comes a typical honour student. He’s even doing the glasses thing.”
Taichi: “Oh shush! Don’t act so bossy just because you’re the class prez!”
Juza: “Can’t we make a fuss at least on Valentine’s Day?”
Banri: “President. If you want to pass through here, go over my corpse!”
Azami: “Just shut your mouth for once.”
Taichi: “You look serious and all, but aren’t you the one who thinks about today the most?”
Sakyo: “What are you talking about? I have no interest in that.”
Juza: “There you go again~ Admit it, you’re also fidgeting for Valentine’s Day!”
Omi: “I don’t know about these unpopular guys, but should I tell you about some tips on how to be popular?”
Juza: “Ugh, so pretentious!”
Sakyo: “I must read this reference book for the qualification exam before getting carried away by such an event.”
Azami: “The book’s upside down though.”
Sakyo: “Urk...”
“Choc— I mean— Today, I think I’m not doing well...”
Taichi: “He just said chocolate for a sec there.”
Juza: “He might as well think about returning gifts for White Day already.”
Sakyo: “W-what? I don’t think I’ll knit a muffler for the White Day and make it so that two people can wear it together. No, not at all...”
Taichi: “Dang, he really DID think about it!”
Juza: “So in the end, we’re all waiting for Angel-chan, huh.”
Banri: “It’s about time we settle this matter. Let’s end the futile conflict here.”
“My right hand... it’s aching...”
Taichi: “You just wanted to say that, right?”
Azami: “...By the way, who’s Angel-chan?”
Taichi: “Wait- You’ve been conversin’ without knowin’ that?!”
Omi: “Actually, who are you in the first place?”
Azami: “I’m Azami Izumida, who transferred to school here today.”
Juza: “You’re a transfer student?”
Taichi: “You should’ve said that first! You’re actin’ way too familiar with us!”
Sakyo: “Everyone, the teacher just contacted me. Seems like Angel-chan took a rest at home today.”
Juza: “Aight, disperse.”
Omi: “Bye, guys.”
Banri: “Everything has turned into nothingness...”
Taichi: “Just go home!”
Banri: Aight, that’s the end of Etude. Great work, guys.
Comment: Good job!
Comment: It was too funny lol
Comment: Juza-kun was really cheerful
Juza: My role was a “Frivolous guy”.
Taichi: And mine’s a “Delinquent”! I tried using Ban-chan as reference~
Azami: No wonder why I thought it was kinda similar.
As I said at the end, I’m a “Transfer student”.
Omi: I was a “Popular guy from Class 1” but I’m not sure if I did it well...
Comment: I laughed at the popular Omi-kun lol
Comment: Please accept my chocolate too
Comment: Was Banri-kun a “Chuunibyou”?
Banri: Yup. Man, I had a hard time comin’ up with those lines.
Y’know, I really like how Sakyo-san acted as the “Class president”.
Taichi: Sakyo-nii was being teased a lot that it was hard to hold back my laughter!
Azami: Pretty rare for you to do funny acts that many times.
Sakyo: It’s easy to emphasize comicalness with that kind of serious character.
Banri: Oh, it’s almost the time.
Omi: Everyone, thanks for watching us today.
Juza: I wanna do it again if we get the chance.
Sakyo: Also, thank you for voting. Thanks to you viewers, the Etude was successful.
Banri: See you in the next Inste Live.
Taichi: Bye bye~!

Chapter 4 - Talk
Arata groaned as he got up to retrieve his digivice at 4:15 in the morning with an incoming call. Of all the times to leave his digivice in the living room. He looks at the front door as he entered the living room and shakes his head. Ten days since she left on her trip and he wants to  welcome her home just once. She always beats him home when he’s at school and she’s at work, but she has twenty more days away.
Why was he in the living area again? It’s not because of the eerie creaking sounds within the walls or the drips and kata noises in the hall. He’s not used to them but Ami reassures him they are harmless. He turned back around to head back to bed when his digivice started ringing again.
That’s right, his digivice.
He walked over to it and answered it, not seeing it was an unknown number or that it was coming from somewhere in the United States.
“Hello?” he greeted.
“Mr. Sanada?” someone spoke in English causing Arata to blink sleep away, his tired mind cannot process English right now.
“Yes, that’s me,” Arata responded with a rough accent but he hopes the point is across. He could hang up, it could be a scam. Something is telling him it’s not however.
“Phew, so glad we contacted you!” the man was speaking faster than what Arata could understand.
“Uh.. my english isn’t good, can you slow down?”
“No time. Don’t worry about the international bill we will cover it -” International bill? “We need you to keep Ms. Aiba talking, make sure she stays awake, okay?” Ms Aiba? Ami!
“Wait-” Arata said but he got a transferring tone. He looked at his digivice seeing the call was from the states. The holographic display was disabled on the caller’s end so he disabled his. He held the digivice closer to his ear as the tone stopped. “Hello?”
“Arata?” Ami’s voice spoke. Her voice sounding drowsy, exhausted, and forced.
“Ami, are you okay?” Arata asked his mind and body now awake, no longer caring about sleep.
“I’m fine. The doctors are just overreacting,” Ami said and he can imagine her with a bright smile, trying to calm his fears. “They think if I fall asleep, I won’t wake back up.”
Arata hands shake as he places his digivice on speaker, he has to sit it down otherwise he might break it. “You are obviously not fine if they tell you that.”
Her voice is slowly sounding more awake. “Are you okay?” she asks and it throws him for a loop. He’s not the patient that the doctors want to stay awake, he’s not even the one who is close to a doctor! “You sound terrified,” Ami says.
“I am,” Arata says quietly, so quietly that he’s unsure if she heard him or not. He’s not even sure that if he said it in the first place so he repeats. “I am. I’m terrified, completely terrified! I don’t know what happened, I don’t know why I am the one chosen to keep you awake!” Than, it is like he doesn’t have a filter on his mouth because the next thing he says, surprises him. “I’m terrified that I won’t see you again!”
Silence. It was so deafening that Arata started to miss the kata noises.
“There was an attack in New York City, where Mom and I are at,” Ami says softly and he can tell that she’s worried about him. “Mom was showing me where her latest project was at, telling me about it. I-I don’t remember all the details, it went by in a flash. Mom is okay, she’s showing her recording of what happened before we got separated to the police. The attacker was using his hostages to gain a bargaining trip. He didn’t know I was there, I used stealth hide and followed them. I guess it’s a benefit of still being partially cyber huh?”
“Why would you do that?” Arata asked.
“NVNG. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I’m a detective, remember, it’s almost natural for me. Plus he is on the International Wanted List, if I let him go, Kyoko would be mad,” Ami explained. “The detectives that were working couldn’t get in, he had the electronic lock jammed. I was already inside the room but I was able to see what the password into his computer was. While they were trying to negotiate with him, I got into his computer and removing the signals that were jamming the lock.”
Silence.
“Ami,” Arata said.
“Sorry, I’m trying to piece it together, I-I don’t want to give you the wrong events,” she said. “The next thing that I remember was the detectives bursting in, the man getting ready to shoot, but I jumped him on his back, causing him to shot the ceiling. Than he slammed me hard into the brick wall. I have a bad concussion for sure. The doctor's, they just want to monitor me, make sure it doesn’t lead to something worse.”
“So, are you okay?” Arata asked, his mouth dry.
Ami laughed, “My head is throbbing, pounding, but after getting slammed hard into a brick wall, it would be scarier if I didn’t feel anything. I’m sorry, if I woke you.”
“What?”
“I wanted to talk to you,” Ami said. “I couldn’t remember my cousin’s name at the moment but I remembered you. My mom wanted  me to be talking to someone who I know, who I can trust, so I asked for you.”
“I feel honored,” Arata said. “I didn’t know what time zone you was in. So how is New York City?”
“It’s here, I miss home,” Ami responded. “Hold on.” Silence. A lot of silence. “Arata?”
“I’m still here,” he responded.
“I-I know it’s going on six-thirty there and school will be starting but -”
“I’m not hanging up,” Arata interrupted not even realizing two hours plus went by. “You are more important than school.”
“Arata!” Ami said shocked and to be honest, he doesn’t blame her. He’s never missed a day. He can imagine Ami feeling his forehead to see if he’s sick or Nokia shaking him asking where the real Arata is at. “But-”
“I don’t care,” Arata spoke, his hands gripping his pant legs tightly.
“They want me to stay awake for one more hour. After one more hour, you can do what you like, sleep or school.”
“What will you do?”
“Eat, possibly if they bring me food, but sleep.”
“Will you be okay with sleeping?”
Ami let out a simple chuckle, “Of course, the doctors are-”
“I was referring to your nightmares,” Arata interrupted.
Ami’s chuckling stopped suddenly, “How do you know about them?”
“When we binged watched my horror animes,” Arata said. “It seemed like you was pleading your life for someone else’s. I was going to wake you and ask you about it but you stopped when I touched your shoulder.”
“Did I say who?” Her voice sounded so sad and distant, he’s heard it before, during a time he wishes to forget. That voice it breaks his heart.
“I don’t think so. You did apologize to me by name, but you was still fast asleep. I don’t think you realize I was there.”
“I’ll be alright, even with my nightmares,” Ami said. “I’m sorry if I disturb you.”
“Ami, explain them to me.”
“My nightmares?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I’m curious and we have some time to spare so humor me.”
“I’m surprised you didn’t figure it out.”
“All I got was ‘take me, not him’ and ‘I’m sorry, Arata’. You was whimpering and shaking, not much to go on.”
“Would you like a hint?”
“No, I want you to explain it to me.”
It was quiet but Ami finally answered. “It’s me trying to bargain with Eater Arata to get the real Arata back. The nightmare usually ends with you gone from existence, but it didn’t end that way on that particular night,” Ami explained.
“The night I found out?”
“Yes,” Ami said before the call got disconnected leaving Arata frantically trying to get the connection back again.
“This number is for outgoing calls only,” the recorded voice for the hospital spoke.
Arata hung up and went to Digi-line and call her digivice only to receive, “This number is currently unreachable. Try again later. If you know this number is still active, please call Kamishiro Enterprise.”
Arata’s eyes were downcast trying to figure out what he could do when an idea took over his body as he typed out a message.
Arata: I need your advice, ASAP. When and where can we meet?
Nokia: Pretty much sure that you have the wrong contact.
Arata: No, I don’t. Please Nokia.
Nokia: Meet me in Shinjuku at 8:30. If it’s as desperate as you make it sound than you’ll ditch class.
Arata: I’m already ditching school today.
Nokia: 8:15 than.
Arata quickly got changed into his usual outfit and left the apartment, locking it as he called his school, letting them know he won’t be in today.

Accepting the transient nature of life and the dangers of holding on to what no longer exists
Sango City is in full bloom thanks to the Ikebana Festival. After visiting Kaede, I was looking forward to finally visit Tsukiko and meet up with the rest of the Sango group.
Connie and Pai have some downtime again so they’re making the most of it before things pick up again soon. I remember last time, when I was in Adrikha, they were in the process of finalizing the paperwork for Marippe. Assuming that everything goes through and no issues stand in the way, Connie and Pai should be able to travel to Marippe in a couple weeks. Fingers crossed that things go smoothly this time!
For now, since everything’s submitted and they just have to wait for the final approval and other stuff, Connie and Pai are hanging out in Sango for the festival. Unless something else’s going on, they’re probably gonna stay here until it’s time to be up and about again. Since things will soon get hectic again for them, it’s a good idea for them to take it slow so they can mentally prepare themselves. Given how their journey and adventures have gone so far, there’s no telling what Connie and Pai will get themselves into next.
In terms of Connie and Pai’s journey, Jamie brought up some concerns, specifically about Pai. It’s hard to believe, but the duo has been traveling together for a long time now. And eventually, whether they like it or not, their time together will come to an end. Connie’s made it clear that they don’t expect to make it out alive - that’s kinda expected from someone like them, not in a pessimistic way, but kinda like accepting the inevitable.
Like I said before, what happened with Raiden, Qingmei, and Dainn was a miracle - or a freak occurrence, as some have called it (though I don’t like the word freak because it seems kinda mean, but I get what they’re saying) - so the chances of Connie and Pai having the same, or even a similar outcome, is unlikely. Jamie and I agree that Connie’s accepted their fate, but the same can’t be said for Pai.
Pai has always been a bit of a mystery to me. She seems like an open book, but at the same time I feel like I don’t know too much about her. Prior to Connie, the only other person who was able to provide some background on her is Jamie, and they aren’t that close. Jamie’s not exactly friends with her, more like acquaintances through other people, so that’s really the extent of their relationship.
What we know is that before tagging along with Connie, Pai was involved in some incident at the Thundering Badlands, which was how Jamie met her. Prior to that, Pai was living with an adventurer named Alistair, who had taken her in when she was out on the streets.
Their relationship, in Pai’s words, was toxic on both sides. Jamie had described him as controlling, the kind of person who tends to play the victim in order to get his way. Pai, by many accounts, can be manipulative herself, but she doesn’t seem to be that way out of malice. She, by her own admission, can’t be left to her own devices for too long, which is why she can come across as needy and clingy. I can get why that makes her sort of unlikable and hard to get along with for some people.
I don’t know if it would be right to say that Pai can be polarizing, but, at least in my personal experience, she’s someone I can only handle in short bursts of time. I don’t mind her company, but she can be tiring to be around after a while. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, just a difference in personalities that can be hard to see eye to eye with.
I wouldn’t be surprised if most of Pai’s issues stemmed from Alistair. Jamie was involved in investigating the incident that ended in Alistair’s suicide. He had opened up a portal, causing a catastrophe that took three years for the city to fully recover from. The locals called him the apocalypse as he almost destroyed a part of the world. As for the rift he created, it’s still there, just contained and completely closed off to the public as they’re still trying to figure out how to close it for good.
Pai’s involvement remains questionable, but I think the general consensus is that she wasn’t entirely involved, she just merely enabled him. Connie had also looked into the incident, so it’s safe to say that they probably know more about it - otherwise they wouldn’t have agreed to let Pai tag along. All they’ve said is that what’s past is done and Pai has the present to prove herself.
Connie and Pai have proven to be a good team, much to Jamie’s relief. She was a bit hesitant at first when she heard they were traveling together as she felt that a duo as that could be either very beneficial or very harmful to each other. In terms of their personalities, it’s kinda like opposites attract. They can bring out the best in each other or enable their worst traits, and maybe that’s why they play off each other so well.
And with all relationships, there are ups and downs. While hanging out with Ayaka, Mamoru, and Hanzou, we had a feeling that something was off with Pai. Mio was the one who had the guts to ask Connie if something was going on. Connie had nothing to hide, but they weren’t quite sure themselves other than speculations that probably aren’t too far from the truth.
Basically, Connie says that Pai’s been unusually clingy lately, and it’s getting to a point where it’s a problem. And not just for Connie, it’s becoming an issue for other people too. But above all, it’s not a major problem, just a minor thing that can potentially lead to a bigger problem in left unaddressed.
There’s also Pai’s smoking habits, which is something we don’t pay too much mind to. It’s just one of those things where we’re aware of it, she disclosed it to us, and we minded our own business as long as it doesn’t interfere with her performance. It’s one of those things she kinda keeps to herself as she prefers to smoke alone, though occasionally Connie joins her.
As for why she does it, all she said was that she’s well aware of the harmful risks, and that’s kinda the reason. Jamie said Alistair was a heavy chain smoker, so she must have learned the habit from him. In my experience, I don’t mind smokers as long as they’re respectful about it, which Pai is. I mean, when she’s at the camp she always asked if it’s okay for her to have a smoke break, and I just tell her to be safe and not wander off too far.
In the past few days since I’ve been here, it seems like either Pai’s stuck to Connie or going off for a smoke break. Maybe that’s also why she seems more irritable than usual. Ayaka’s trying her best to distract Pai with the festivities, even if it meant sacrificing her own free time.
I think it is sort of working since today Ayaka’s able to have time to spend with her brother, who also doesn’t have a lot of free time. Connie’s also able to have some time to spend with Hanako and Michi without Pai hanging over their shoulder. As for me and Daisy Jane, we tagged along with Mamoru and Makoto and explored more of Sango City.
Despite being dragged down by Pai, Connie says they’re not too concerned. Maybe it’s just stress, which makes sense. I can imagine that Pai isn’t probably the best with high pressure, a complaint about her that comes up every so often.
Mei also brought up a good point about how Pai might be holding on too tightly. After all, the fun and adventures can’t go on forever. Connie’s already accepted that sooner or later their time will come to an end. Pai, on the other hand, I’m not sure if she’s accepted that. And that’s probably why she’s being more clingy and overbearing lately.
What happens once the journey is over? More specifically, what will Pai do with herself? I’d hate to think that she wouldn’t care anymore if Connie dies. I mean, she already lost one companion. And even it was a toxic relationship, it was still someone close to her. Who knows how much more she can take?
Like it or not, time will pass, and things will come to an end. It’s not good to keep holding on to something that no longer exists. By doing that, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment.
I think out of all of us, Mei probably is the closest to understanding what might be going on with Pai. She mentioned that she was once to caught up with the past after dealing with one too many losses, and that pushed her into a corner. She had become so fixated on the past that she became out of touch with the present. In other words, she clung on so hard that she ended up pushing everyone away.
Makoto also said that Pai’s the kind of person who needs to be taken care of. Sure, she could stand to be more independent, but I think some people are more naturally inclined to be dependent on others. Part of the reason why Jamie decided to let Pai tag along with Connie is because she knew that Connie will be able to push Pai a bit so she’d learn to stand on her own. And according to her, it did work, especially since I have seen them on separate occasions.
So, while it kinda looks like Pai’s regressing, it’s not all that surprising or unexpected. I mean, stuff like that does happen. Sure, it’s inconvenient, but it’s just a phase - at least that’s what we’re looking at it like. Again, not too surprising considering how it’s like that sometimes. Just as long as it’s addressed and something’s done about it, hopefully things will go back to normal.
I just hope that when the day comes, when Pai and Connie have to go their separate ways, Pai will still have the will to live and make a life for herself. I mean, it’s her life and she has the right to choose her own fate, but I’d rather she choose to move forward and learn how to stand on her own two feet instead of living off of someone else’s shadow.
Aside from that, the festivities have been good for all of us. I’ve learned a lot about ikebana from Ayaka and it’s a lot of fun. I’ve always been interested in the meaning behind flowers. Plus, making flower arrangements has always been an enjoyable activity for me. There’s nothing like making something that looks pretty, as well as say a message or tell a story.
The Tsukiko side of Sango is different from Kaede, almost contrasting in terms of their environment and color - it’s fascinating! Sango City’s definitely a lot busier than the villages in Kaede. Compared to Adrika, Sango’s a bit more compact and straightforward in terms of navigation.
Of course, the streets were busier than usual because of the festival, though Mamoru says it’s not too different on a normal day. The sakura petals floating around the streets really add to the atmosphere and I can’t help but reach out to grab a few when they come my way.
Mamoru took the lead when it came to exploring the market street. He’s the kind of person who knows how to get the best deals, so he’s pretty popular in these parts. We did a lot of shopping and snacking that day, like we did in the bazaar. Definitely a good way to get to know a city and its culture.
There’s a famous food stall that shows up three times a week and the menu changes depending on what’s available. That day, their signature taro mochi boba was on the menu so we stayed in line for half an hour, which was worth it in my opinion.
We also tried other snacks like gochujang tofu fries, butter crab fried rice onigiri, and salmon croquettes, all which were good. Like I said, the wait was worth it. And since Mamoru’s familiar with everyone, we got a little extra. That part was a bit unplanned so we decided to set up a picnic in a quiet spot.
And of course, I brought a lot of stuff, because, why not? I got some clothes from a popular local designer that looks exquisite while also practical for everyday use. Ayaka mentioned that there’s a seamstress turned fashion designer from Marippe who was originally from here. If I recall, she’s the same person Sumi talked about when she said that she knew someone in Marippe. Knowing Connie, it’s likely they’ll run into her someday.
The book store isn’t on the market district, but it is a place worth checking out. Mio isn’t there, much to Mamoru’s relief. Though, while she is the boss, she actually doesn’t show up in person often as she’s usually busy with other matters. Light novels and manga are huge in these parts, so there’s a lot of those. There’s also stationery, so I had to get a notebook, which was handmade and looks very pretty.
For lunch we stopped by a ramen stall, where we ran into Connie, Michi, and Hanzou. Pai was surprisingly nowhere to be seen as Connie said Aoi and Shiori, a friend of theirs who makes fireworks and lanterns, managed to keep her busy. So we all hung out and caught up before meeting up again hours later at the festival.
It was a nice surprise to see Hanzou again. With Lan spending a couple weeks back home in Yuexing, Hanzou decided to go home too. That happened to line up perfectly with Connie and Pai being in Sango as Connie’s able to train him when it was time for his orientation after being cleared by the guild. Up until then, the last time Connie was able to train and orient a new team member themselves was Amina, back when they were just setting foot in Adrikha.
So far, Hanzou says the training’s going well. Since things are slow at the moment, most of the training has been the running errands type, which isn’t unusual. Connie felt kinda bad that Hanzou couldn’t have come at a better time, but he says it’s fine, especially since things will pick up soon. He’s just glad that he could finally join the team officially after waiting for so long.
Michi’s happy too, especially since he and Hanzou actually applied together, and he was surprised to find out that Hanzou didn’t make the cut. Now, Michi’s bugging Connie to assign both of them on a mission together, which Connie is working on. The way they explained it is that there’s a lot of considerations when dispatching people for missions, so that’s something to keep in mind. Jamie and Raiden have said similar things - in other words, you can’t just send people out on missions just because you can, is what I’m understanding.
Before coming to the stall, Connie, Michi, and Hanzou were with Hanako and Shinobu. Hanako’s busy with work as usual, she’s been patrolling the streets whenever I saw her. Michi also has to work, though he happened to be off that day and was finally able to check out the festival with Hanzou.
After the festival, Hanzou plans to stick around Tsukiko for a couple more days before heading to Kaede with Makoto to hang with Shino. Michi wanted to tag along too, but, of course, he has work. Such is the life of an adult.
The ramen was really good, and thanks to Mamoru, there was a discount. They also gave us some side dishes for free, like natto, tempura, and sashimi. You can’t really go wrong with tempura and sashimi. The natto, on the other hand, it’s a lot better than the first time I tried it - which was from a grocery store - but it’s still not really my favorite.
I think my issue with natto is the slimy texture. The bitterness isn’t really something I like either but I can tolerate that. And seasonings like soy sauce and mayo do make a difference. Mamoru suggested that I add those to make it taste better, and it did. However, the slime is just something I can’t get used to. So, my verdict on natto is that I’ll eat it if offered to me, but it wouldn’t be something I pick for myself. Still, I’m glad I tried it again.
And then we went off our separate ways before meeting up at the festival again later that night to see the fireworks show. Ayaka wasn’t exaggerating about the fireworks being unforgettable. Ever since Shiori took over her family’s shop, her fireworks and lanterns have become a staple in Sango’s festivals.
Later that night, Connie introduced me and Daisy Jane to Shiori, and we ordered a couple crates of fireworks and lanterns to take back to the camp. It’s one of those mystery box type things so I don’t know what’s in there other than it’s all handmade by Shiori and her family. After seeing her work with the fireworks show, I’m definitely intrigued!
I haven’t seen much of Pai today as she was with Shiori and Aoi, but I think they managed to get through to her as she seems a lot happier and more at ease. she actually spoke about making plans with Aoi and some other kids for tomorrow, leaving Connie to be free to do whatever they want.
Shiori did say that fireworks and flowers are similar in terms of their beauty and transience. In other words, stuff like those aren’t meant to last forever, so you only have the present to appreciate them. The same can be said for almost all aspects of life, I think.
Nothing last forever - and nothing should last forever - so we gotta make the most out of the time we have now because once it’s gone, we can’t go back.
