The Centenary Chapter Masters Convention is held in the most boring corporate hotel on Terra. What goes down?

Dante goes to bed at 8pm sharp, citing the importance of a good sleep. Helbrecht calls him an old fogey. Dante punches Helbrecht in the kidneys so hard one of them disintegrates. He then goes to bed. Marneus and Dessian nod sagely at this violently concise dedication to punctuality. Asterion and Gabriel laugh and point as Helbrecht curls up on the floor holding his stomach.

Tu’shan has taken all of the mini-fridges from the rooms and arranged them into a bar. He’s using the contents of them to make flaming drinks for everyone (he smuggled a butane torch in). He has to gently hand some of them under the “bar”, in the recessed parts of the fridges, because Shrike is lurking there.

Jubal and Tyberos are on a couch off to the side. They’re actually having a very pleasant, quiet conversation about the best way to clean servomotors.

Kardan Stronos is glaring at them from the corner for daring to have a discussion on servomotors without him. A Custodian is glaring at Kardan from the doorway for daring to besmirch holy Terra with his dour expressions.

Omg. Listening to Gathering Storm and the narrator states that Guilliman immediately recognized Calgar as a valuable resource and made him one of his main advisors from the get-go. He knew Calgar was The Shit, he treated him with respect and interest, he values Calgar's contributions.

But in Dark Imperium you get a chapter or two from Calgar's perspective and our dear Papa Smurf clearly got a bad case of imposter syndrome. Like every time Guilliman says something remotely related to Calgar, Calgar immediately takes it the worst way possible and assumes he's being criticized for a sub-par job.

I have a powerful need for Malum Caedo to be referenced, and referenced a LOT, in future Warhammer 40K material.

I need this man to be spoken of in hushed tones by other Space Marines. I want the Black Legion to hiss at the utterance of his name. I want Guilliman and Marneus fucking Calgar to fucking honor this guy in a public square on Macragge.

Malum Caedo is a Space Marine who has basically pulled off, single handedly, the kind of battlefield prowess it was once thought only Primarchs or the Emperor His-Goddamn-Self could have accomplished.

Give that Marine a 50 foot tall solid gold statue. Devote a whole ass library to his legendary badassitude.

Make Caedo unforgettable, a legendary hero of the Imperium, a memory to inspire every Marine, from every chapter, who comes after him.

And when he dies, he better die in single combat with a Chaos God or something -- pretty sure nobody else could take him down.

So anyway. I read Dark Imperium and now I am having thoughts about it. Especially Marneus Calgar's complicated feelings about Guilliman's return. It is super interesting to me, allow me to obsess about it for a bit:

The Primarchs have been mythical figures for millennia. Calgar, and probably every Ultramarine before him, have been fantasizing about Guilliman's return and how great it will be. Dreaming about this legendary event that make it all better and set the world right! And well, it happened! It's a miracle! The best thing to happen in your life but also, it didn't go like it did in your imagination and that's almost... disappointing.

For ten thousand years the Ultramarines have been crying over Guilliman's old furniture. They're holy relics of the Primarch. And now Guilliman just sits in them. The only reason that this chair was even important in the first place is that it was his chair. Of course he's sitting in his chair but it just stings. It was venerated for generations and now it's just furniture again. Don't you care this is a sacred relic? In a religion that Calgar doesn't even believe in himself? Ridiculous feeling, but still there.

It's one thing that Calgar has to do unsavory things that he wished he didn't have to. Calgar is just a guy who is trying his best in a tough situation. This shouldn't be necessary for the Primarch! What would it mean if the being that was supposed to be the greatest of all and fix everything by his mere presence is also a guy who's trying his best?

He can't blame the Primarch for this! He's unable to see Guilliman as anything else than the greatest, coolest, most amazing person ever. That the galaxy didn't get fixed as it should be has to be someone else's fault, it is everyone else that sucks.

The legendary event that was supposed to set the world right happened, and the galaxy still sucks. What else is there now? The love for your Primarch has been so deeply ingrained into you, you can't possibly even blame him.

Yesterday I learned that Calgar pulled an Erebus. And can be shady AF.

So - here's the guy that's NOT Marneus Augustus Calgar.

I like him for that.

Not knowing what Imperium magazine would bring me each month really paid off because this month had Marneus Calgar and his honour guard and I full on fucking squeed in a way that would have been embarrassing if anyone was around to hear it.
