An Unbalanced Force -- Plot

Hi! Okay, so @kingsofeverything​ posted this incredible fic this year called An Unbalanced Force, aka Marold Harold. 

Lauren and I talk about writing stuff a lot, and one thing that I think we both struggle with sometimes is plotting. How do our stories fit into standard plot templates and how do we go about doing standard plots for our WIPs. We’ve talked briefly before about figuring out the actual plot of Marold Harold, but I haven’t put actual thought into it until yesterday, thanks to the @authorsworkshop​ current prompt.

So, warning here, there are major MAJOR spoilers in this post. If you haven’t yet read An Unbalanced Force and would like to do so without spoilers, then, uh, stop reading! 

I figured the real story here is Harry building a life he really wants. I, personally, suspect he would’ve carried on his marriage for much much longer had Gabe not very clearly stated that he did not want kids, therefore that’s the inciting incident that has Harry really figuring out what steps he needs to take to make his life his personal definition of a success.

Whereas I think a lot of stories are normally weighted in the rising action, I think Marold Harold is balanced in exposition, because we the readers, and Harry himself, are really learning about what this new life in this new places is, and he’s really looking around himself and seeing all of these things can be his, a place to fit in, truly. So the move from inciting incident to climax is not as big of a piece as other stories because he’s pretty clear on what he wants, he just needs to get himself ready to take the steps to get there.

The real crux of the story is him taking the step to say ‘I want a divorce’ and him reframing his life in a way that centers what he wants, and that’s what everything before that builds up to.

Then, post divorce, the falling action, is him falling apart a little. He isolates himself from everything that he was building towards, rejecting the support of his community and centering a life that he thought he should have, one that was sad about his divorce. He wouldn’t allow himself to be happy.

So then the resolution is when he allows himself to get back into his community of friends. And finally, when he accepts Louis love and knows, truly and deeply, that they are moving towards a future where they are both going to work towards what they want, because they have the same end goals.

I think maybe the plot looks like this?

if you don’t mind sharing (or if Lauren doesn’t mind you sharing), what are your first impressions of marold harold? No need for specifics, just wondering in general! I’m really looking forward to this fic of hers!

I don’t mind and I cleared it Lauren and she also doesn’t mind. To be honest, this is my second read-through, so it’s not quite my first impressions. With this fic, because it’s so long, I was reading along as she was writing and there was a lot of cheerleading and telling her to keep writing. 

And now it’s really long. RIP. It makes sense, since it’s covering a good amount of time and Harry’s going through a major life-changing event. But it’s still SO LONG. So, I’m literally reading through the first draft and trying to come up with ways to shorten sections or things that can be condensed or scenes dropped... that sort of thing. Then I’ll do a proper closer beta on another draft. 

BUT! THAT IS NOT WHAT YOU ASKED ABOUT! (Sorry. I do love betaing for Lauren and could talk about our process a whole lot. But now, the point...)

My first impression about it, is how good it is? I really don’t want to give anything away, but at this point it’s common knowledge that Harry’s married to not-Louis and then he’s not married to not-Louis. I think it’s a very realistic and honest and scary reason why they get divorced. I think it’s heartbreaking and Harry has a lot of growing to do before, during, and after they get to that point as a couple. I reading a section today where he’s talking to Louis about it (I hope that’s not too much of a spoiler) and it’s just.... really sad in a really honest way.

But, he comes out on the other end a changed person, in really healthy ways. And I think the next chapter of his life (so to speak) he’s going in with a better (read: healthier) mindset about his expectations and what he wants and all that good stuff. 

I also know Lauren’s got a bunch of shit anons over the past few months about this fic, so I’d be remiss not to mention that I LOVE THIS LOUIS. Honestly, I really don’t want to say more, but this Louis is so so so wonderful and I have such a soft spot in my heart for him and I’m rooting for him so hardcore in this. 

I think everyone’s who’s liked Heading for Limbo or Don’t Want Shelter or The Second Hand Unwinds is really going to love this one too. Lauren’s so good at putting flawed characters in positions where they can take a good hard look at their current life and then challenge themselves to become open to a different kind of life. And this fic is very much one of those fics that she excels at writing.

Ooh thanks nonny!! As far as I can remember it was the Marold Harold fic by @kingsofeverything ! I was visiting my family and having a really bad fatigue day and so I laid in bed and read it in a single go. I often have a tough time reading long fic-- my max in a day is usually closer to 40-50k --but I had been really pumped for that fic and was excited to read it. I am fully spacing on the actual name of the fic so maybe Lauren will respond with it and a link!!

It is well written. I have read published hardcover books that are not nearly as good. Get ready for FEELS and some very well placed headcanon nods.
