I love Dostoevsky too! What are your favorite female characters in his books?
ooooooo good question!
1. avdotya romanovna raskolnikova: crime and punishment (badass lady, takes no shit from the men in her life, soft heart, loves everyone)
2. sofia semyonovna marmeladova: crime and punishment (has issues but she's an absolute sweetheart, loves deeply, would do anything for family ("family" includes rodion and dunya))
3. marya timofyevna stavrogina, formerly lebyadkina: demons (she a crazy bitch but she sees right through stavrogin and i respect that. also she's extremely entertaining to read)
4. nastasya filippovna rogozhina: the idiot (chaotic good, also has to deal with rogozhin and that takes a strong spirit. deserved better)
those are the four that stand out to me. i'd love to hear yours!

demons characters as mitski songs because i love making content that only i like
nikolai - a burning hill.
pyotr - washing machine heart.
ivan - my body’s made of crushed little stars.
alexei - nobody.
liza - all of them <3 (but last words of a shooting star and liquid smooth the most).
marya - me and my husband.
dasha - class of 2013.
varavara - wife.
stepan - why didn’t you stop me?
julia - a loving feeling.
marviky - dan the dancer.
erkel - drunk walk home.

why does no one talk about how marya timofyevna is one of the best characters in demons? she's resilient and (though certifiably insane), remarkably intelligent; she has to deal with incredibly shitty men in her life, from her abusive brother to her fake-ass husband, and she sees through them both and somehow manages to stay upright. and then what does she get? she's publicly shamed and then murdered by fedka because stavrogin wanted to run off with liza. marya timofyevna stavrogina deserved better

ideal ending to demons: how about darya pavlovna and varvara petrovna find stavrogin just in time to stop him from killing himself and he's brought to trial for the lebyadkins' murder and also forced to face the consequences for every woman and girl he's abused and manipulated and psychologically destroyed and given the public humiliation that he had avoided for his entire life. how about that huh
