Do you know the "Amen Break"? - I bet you do! 

The "Amen Break" is an omnipresent drum beat. I learned about it today while browsing Michael S. Schneider's website. His teachings on math, art, nature and "constructing the universe" are an invaluable resource for pattern seekers.

Uncovering the "Amen Break" has been to my ears what learning the word "spiral" did for my eyes. "A-Ha! So, THAT's the sound!" It's been there all the time, but I just couldn't call it.

It's certainly a breakbeat that's in my muscle memory. Aside from the music I listen to- hip hop, drum'n'bass, funk- my college's Sankofa step team worked hard to diversify our sounds and move away from this kind of rhythm, but it still surfaced in most of our steps.

Nate Harrison's 2004 audio documentary about this oft-sampled and repeated drum break traces the musical usage of this sound, and Michael S. Schneider's post, which can be found here, explains why it has remained so popular. As with so many other works of art, it's the harmonious math! Schneider looks at the audio waveform, and shows how the major peaks line up in nested Golden Proportions, just like the proportions found in nature and the human body.
