Deck the Halls (2006)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Deck the Halls is knit from the same wool as the disastrous Christmas with the Kranks. Ridiculous, pointless, unfunny and filled with lame developments that’ll have you asking countless questions, it takes 93 minutes of your time while offering nothing in return.
In Cloverdale, Massachusetts, self-proclaimed Christmas expert Steve Finch (Matthew Broderick) is preparing for his favourite season when new neighbors move in across the street. Soon, a rivalry forms between Buddy Hall (Danny DeVito) and Steve when the newcomer decides to go all-out with his Christmas lights and build a display you can see from space.
While technically, the film is about Buddy’s attempt to put together the Christmas display to end all Christmas displays while Steve sabotages his efforts, that storyline doesn’t come in for a long, long time. It's the like the film doesn't know what it wants to be about and who should be in the wrong. Buddy and his too-hot-for-him wife Tia (Kristin Chenoweth) immediately make a strange impression upon Steve and his wife, Kelly (Kristin Davis). This makes you think that the Halls are the problem. A few scenes later, it's made clear anyone who calls themselves an expert on Christmas is a bit of a jerk. From there, characters change depending on the scene.
Director John Whitesell's non-comitment to a villain vs. hero story means the film is filled with inconsistencies. We see that Buddy doesn’t have the money needed for a package of Christmas lights that would make Clark Griswald blush. His solution? Steal electricity from across the street. Later on, we see that Buddy is a car salesman superstar that could sell ice at the North Pole. Does he have money, or doesn't he? You think we're building up to something when it’s established that Buddy is the kind of person that doesn’t understand jokes or sarcasm (so much that his ability to sell anything would be questionable), that his twin daughters (played by Sabrina and Kelly Aldridge) are dumb as rocks, that his wife doesn’t know the meaning of “inappropriate”, that Kelly (Kristin Davis) feels like a failure because all she writes are cookbooks composed of pre-existing recipes given slight twists (as opposed to brand new recipes that come out of nowhere?) but then… nothing.
It’s like writers Matt Corman, Chris Ord and Don Rhymer came up with the title and then didn’t know what to do next so they just scribbled a bunch of holiday pratfalls onto a piece of paper. From there, the studio asked the director (responsible for such “gems” as Big Momma’s House 2 & 3, and Holidate) to squeeze this lump of coal until it turned into a diamond. The foreshadowing is as elegant as a fat man sliding down a chimney and the logical holes keep piling up. Buddy’s light show keeps getting bigger and bigger. Obnoxious lights and music are on full blast until 4 in the morning but the only people to have any problems with it are Steve and his wife. Maybe his son for one scene. His daughter played by Alia Shawkat is gone for such long stretches of the picture you practically forget she exists. Later, Buddy's boss scolds him because “his numbers are down”. He’s been there for less than three weeks and on his first day, he sold a car to the boss at sticker price. Which one is it? Is he a selling machine, or incompetent at his job? When it comes time for Steve to complain to the police, he realizes the Sheriff (Gary Chalk) is wearing women’s underwear so he runs away in terror. Why doesn’t just come back to fill in the proper paperwork later? Or is he so triggered, he has no choice but to take the law into his own hands? As we near the mandatory forced sentimentality of the conclusion, displays that would take an entire team a week to put up are done in the blink of an eye. Even if it were possible, what are they being powered by? Magic?
More frustrating than all of these unanswerable questions is knowing you’re wasting your time thinking about them. The people who made Deck the Halls didn’t care. They just looked at their calendar and realized that if they started filming a movie at that time, they’d be done and ready to release it in theaters come November 2006. (December 19, 2021)

Kidnapped!
“What- what are you going to do with me?” Matt asked his female captors nervously as one of the women bound his hands behind his back and their inscrutable leader stood over him. “Nothing if you behave yourself, honey,” she replied evenly. “You might come in handy if we have to negotiate with the coppers if they pick up on our trail.” Matt still didn’t understand. “Are you bank robbers?” he asked desperately. The young woman behind him giggled as she finished tying him. “Hell no, sweetie,” she smiled, “we just broke out of jail is all.” she replied. “Gag him and lock him in the trunk of the car, Kathy.” the leader ordered. “We need to get moving.”
Still from the Roger Corman-directed movie Swamp Women (1955), posted by RoperMike on his website Guys In Trouble.

House of Usher (1960)
Tumblr media
It takes a lot of sheer gumption to just straight-up put spooky ghost noises in the soundtrack to your haunted house movie. At key moments throughout this take on an evil house and dying bloodline we hear ladies wailing and moaning, adding to the ambiance. This Edgar Allan Poe adaptation, Roger Corman’s first of many to come, simply drips with atmosphere. From the opening foggy moors surrounding the estate to the decrepit matte painted walls of the home itself, this feels ripped straight out of a storybook. While Christian statuettes and paintings define much of the estate décor, its primary inhabitant Roderick Usher has added some flair to the place with a series of portraits. Each one is more unsettling than the last, a nightmarish tribute to the evils of generations past, all glowing eyes and unnerving grins. Whether the family truly are cursed to the end, or if Roderick is helping his sister Madeline along to madness by locking her away in a casket, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy, the house certainly does have a mind of its own. Objects move of their own accord, and at several points it seems to try to kill Madeline’s visiting fiancé Philip by dropping a chandelier on him or causing a banister to break away. And it always helps to have a spooky skeleton around to really twist the knife. With the appropriate audio accompaniment, of course.
Vincent Price truly is a gift. Always a treat in his Corman collaborations, here he plays equal parts aristocratic and deranged. Unable to eat anything other than gruel and bothered by the faintest sound, Roderick still has no problem inflicting his lute “playing” on others. His calculations and resistance in the face of the naive if good-hearted Philip always create the air that perhaps he’s lying about all of it, everything just a ploy to control Madeline. But a late nightmare sequence where Philip wanders a blue-tinged estate before happening upon the generations of the Ushers beckoning and torturing him in their derangement, Price is there along with the rest of them, gleefully playing up the psychosis. When the estate collapses, closing off this evil lineage and being reclaimed by the tarn next to which it is built, this blight on history is erased.
THE RULES

Mr Usher is averse to sound.

Movie Review | The Pit and the Pendulum (Corman, 1961)
Tumblr media
This review contains mild spoilers.
Now, perhaps there was some element of uncertainty with Vincent Price back in 1961 despite him having been a regular star of horror movies for some time at that point. Approaching this in 2023, you will very likely associate Price with the genre and a certain type of character, somewhere on the spectrum of deranged to mustache-twirling evil. (Or maybe it's a grid, like one of those political authoritarian/libertarian/left/right things.) So the fact that Price spends the first two acts of this movie moping around, mournful and wracked with guilt over the death of his wife, means that we spend that time waiting for the other shoe to drop. At a certain point, we know he'll be going full madman, so the rest of the performance doesn't feel terribly convincing, at least compared to the unapologetic, cheerful evil of his character in The Masque of the Red Death.
That being said, this is still Price, meaning that he's still sinking his teeth into the material so there is still plenty to enjoy. (I do not eat swine, but I make an exception for Price's finely aged ham.) And if we can steer the topic towards my awful viewing habits, it only struck me now how much pornographic actor Paul Thomas resembles Price both in facial structure and the rhythms of his line readings. I don't know what's scarier: Thomas turning into a murderous maniac in one of his movies, or Price whipping it out in one of his.
I do think I might have done this a disservice watching it so soon after Masque, as it doesn't feel nearly as visually adventurous, aside from a few stylized bursts. That being said, it's still a pretty nice looking movie. The budgetary limitations are a lot more obvious, as much of this takes place in a rather cramped castle, one which is mostly brown and grey and without the bold colours of the other movie. But the cinematography does have a nice, cozy sense of texture, especially with all the plush velvet fabric on display. (I was recommended this with the promise of fancy hats and a cowl, and I can confirm both are worth the price of admission. Which is zero dollars if you watch it on Tubi. Unless you're one of those grindset types and consider the opportunity cost of watching this astronomically high.) There are also some beautiful matte paintings, both of the castle's exterior and of the titular pit, and some nice deconstructed scoring, every note echoing in eerie isolation.
And without spoiling too much, this is definitely worth seeing for fans of Barbara Steele, and one could think of worse ways to die of shock or lose their wits than having Steele leap out at you from the shadows.

A new Daredevil series is being developed by Disney+
Note: This piece was translated from Spanish.
Link to the original article.
A new TV series based on the superhero Daredevil is being developed for Disney+, according to a report by the specialized outlet Variety.
The website, which cited exclusive sources, claims that writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord (known for their work in the show Covert Affairs) will be in charge of the screenplay and serve as executive producers.
Although the companies that own the rights to the character, Marvel and Disney, have not released any official statements, rumors about a new project based on Daredevil have proliferated in the past few months. The previous series based on the property was canceled in 2018. Since then, however, some of its stars have returned to their roles in entries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Charlie Cox, who played the titular hero, had a cameo in the movie Spider-Man: No Way Home and Vincent D’Onofrio, who portrayed the villain Wilson Fisk, made an appearance in the show Hawkeye.
There have been no announcements related to the show’s cast.

Supernatural Horror Classic, The Devil’s Partner (1961) Newly Restored 4K Special Edition
Includes Newly Restored Bonus Film, Creature From the Haunted Sea (1961)
On Blu-ray & DVD Jan. 16th
Special Features Includes New Interview With Roger Corman
ROCKPORT, Mass. — January 2024 — For Immediate Release — Vintage film restoration and distribution company Film Masters continues its tribute to the pope of pop cinema, Roger Corman, with the third installment of The Filmgroup series on Blu-ray and DVD, The Devil’s Partner, available Jan. 16.
Corman and his brother, Gene, founded The Filmgroup to distribute their own films. While the company did produce the majority of its films, including the cult classic Creature From the Haunted Sea, it also occasionally acquired projects by other filmmakers, as is the case with The Devil's Partner (1961). From director Charles R. Rondeau, the film is a macabre tale of an elderly man who regains his youth after making a deal with the devil. During the summer and fall of 1961, the two films were often paired as a double feature.
Half Man, Half Beast, He Sold his Soul for Passion — Director/actor Edgar Buchanan (best known as Uncle Joe on Petticoat Junction) appears in this supernatural thriller about an old codger trying to reclaim his youth, employing black magic to lure a woman away from his rival. The film also stars Jean Allison, Richard Crane and Ed Nelson. This well-crafted, independent feature has been hailed for its atmosphere and as a pioneering film in the devil worshiping subgenre made popular in the ‘70s.
Made in 1958, The Devil’s Partner languished with no release date until it was picked up and distributed by The Filmgroup, becoming a steady presence on the drive-in circuit, often appearing in tandem with Creature from Haunted Sea, another Corman classic from the golden age of drive-in schlock.
This spoof of spy/gangsters/monster movies stars Anthony Carbone as a gangster and smuggler who decides to kill members of the ship’s bungling crew and blame their deaths on a legendary sea creature. What he doesn’t know is that the creature is actually out there! Also starring Betsy Jones-Moreland and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Robert Towne (Chinatown) under the pseudonym Edward Wain.
The film was conceived when Corman finished shooting The Last Woman on Earth in Puerto Rico and discovered he had enough film left over to make another film. He enlisted long-time associate Charles B. Griffith, who—legend goes—had six days to write the script. Ever the pragmatist when it came to budget, Corman recruited locals to appear in this film as extras.
Special Features: Commentary for The Devil’s Partner is by Larry Strothe, James Gonis, Shawn Sheridan and Matt Weinhold of the Monster Party podcast; theatrical-length commentary for Creature From the Haunted Sea is by fan favorite Tom Weaver, with contributions from Roger Corman, Kinta Zertuche and Larry Blamire. Weaver also provides the liner notes for the film. Ballyhoo Motion Pictures contributes Hollywood Intruders: The Filmgroup Story with Part III of the story, as well as their new interview with Roger Corman on the formation of The Filmgroup; recut trailers, based on the original theatrical trailers; original Creature From the Haunted Sea theatrical trailer (from 16mm archival elements scanned in 4k); and a full essay for The Devil’s Partner by author Mark McGee.
Both films are presented with a theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, as well as in a 1.37:1 television format. The televised version of Creature From the Haunted Sea includes an additional 15 minutes of footage shot years later to extend the film for a sale to Allied Artists. Discs are region free and include English SDH. Audio is DTS-HD/Dolby AC3s.

Dizinin hemen hemen sonuna doğru izlendi Daredevil: Born Again'in prodüksiyonu, diğer yapımlar şeklinde Hollywood'da devam eden sanatçı grevi nedeniyle durmuştu.
