UCONN MATT WOOD SELECTED IN NHL DRAFT

By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - On the first day of the NHL draft, the Nashville Predators selected UConn's Matt Wood at number 15. Wood slipped down a bit further than he was expected to be selected partly because Anaheim, picking at number two, and the Arizona Coyotes at number six, made surprise choices that gave some other teams an opening to select differently than they had wanted or planned to. Speaking to ESPN's Emily Kaplan right afterward, Wood was very complimentary of his UCONN coaches led by Mike Cavanaugh. "(I was) really happy to be there and play for my coaches and they helped me to get ready for this." Wood was the fifth UCONN player since joining Hockey East to be drafted. He wore #71 for his idol Evgeni Malkin. In speaking to Kaplan, incoming Nashville GM Barry Trotz, who's replacing the retiring David Poile, was succinct in his initial evaluation, "Short term, we'll let him develop (back at UCONN). We look at the profile; he's a big body that can score. He's got a long way to go. If you wanna go far in the playoffs, you gotta score. We hope he'll exhibit (his scoring) and he checks all the boxes." Nashville has two former Huskies under their umbrella, Czechs Jachym Kondelik, the Huskies all time-assist leader, and goalie Tomas Vomacka, who they both drafted and played in the minors with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and the Florida Everblades (ECHL), respectively. Wood played very solidly as a 17-year-old freshman. He led the Huskies in scoring with 34 points in 35 games. Wood was superb in the IIHF U-18 bronze medal game for Canada with the game-tying goal in the last minute with the goalie pulled and made a beautiful feathered short pass to Macklin Celebrini for the game-winner in OT 4-3 win over Slovakia. Wood had a three-point performance, garnering a plus-12 and 13 points in just seven games in the tournament. He will return to Storrs next season, be among the top players in Hockey East, and is WJC eligible for Canada. He turned down an offer from the WHL Regina Pats, who drafted him and ex-Pack championship head coach, the current Regina head coach and VP of Hockey Operations John Paddock, to play there and with the first overall selection, Connor Bedard. Instead, Wood chose to come to UCONN and chart his course. At 6'4, he surpassed Tage Thompson as the highest-drafted Husky ever. A total of 10 Huskies have been drafted in the short Hockey East history of the program. RANGERS SELECTIONS The Rangers drafted 23rd overall and selected were able to have a strong player fall to them in Gabriel (Gabe) Perreault. He has lots of offensive upside potential and is heading to Boston College (HE) with linemates Will Smith (San Jose) and Ryan Leonard (Washington). They were together on the USNDTP (USHL) last fall. All three will face Wood at the XL Center when BC comes to play UConn at the XL Center in a marquee matchup. Perreault broke the team record for scoring held by Auston Matthews with 159 points. "It's cool because he's one of the guys I look up to and one of those guys to look up above you," said Perreault to ESPN. Hockey is a big part of the Perreault family. His sister Liliane just completed her collegiate career at Mercyhurst (Erie, PA) (AHA), and his brother Jacon plays with San Diego. His father, Yanic Perreault, is the skills development coach in Chicago and, for eight consecutive seasons, held the NHL's best faceoff percentage at an average of 62.89%. He played 859 games with three tours in Toronto, LA, Nashville, and his hometown Montreal. NOTES: UCONN got another commit for next season in New Hampshire native LW Ben Muthersbaugh, who played for the NJ Titans (NAHL) last year after spending time previously at Tilton School (NHPREP). Ex-Sound Tiger Paul Flache takes a second stab as an assistant coach with the Flint Firebirds (OHL) after being with Atlanta (USPHL Premier) for the last three years. Joining him is a former Ranger from the early-to-mid 1980s and two-time Stanley Cup winner in Edmonton making his North American return is Reijo Ruotsalainen. The 63-year-old Ruotsalainen had been coaching in Europe, though not over the last three years. His previous coaching assignment was with, Kiekko-Vantaa (Finland-Mestis) as an assistant coach. While he had a successful NHL career of 443 games and 344 points and was voted the best defenseman in the 1980 WJC (his third) tourney, had he been playing hockey today, he would rival Erik Carlsson of the San Jose Sharks in the skill game from the blueline in this more free-wheeling era of hockey. After leaving the NHL, he played in three World Championships, one Olympic tournament for Finland, and another 402 games in Europe (Switzerland, Sweden, and Finland). He hasn't been to North America since 2001 as an assistant coach with the long-defunct New Orleans Brass (ECHL), featured one-time Rangers head coach Ted Sator at the helm, and had former New Haven Senator Jeff Lazaro as a player. Ross Colton (Taft Prep), who scored the game-winning Cup-clinching goal three years ago for the Tampa Bay Lightning, was traded to the Colorado Avalanche. Connor Doherty (Sacred Heart University) re-signs with the Maine Mariners (ECHL). After four years in Denmark and nine in Europe, Mike Little of Enfield, the SonderyskE team captain last season, has left the team. Is this the end of the road for the 35-year-old, or is he likely to play a few more years in a new destination? Derek Barach (Salisbury School) heads from Ässät Pori (Finland-FEL) and takes the risky proposition and signs with Vityaz Moscow (Russia-KHL) to continue his European-only career. The newest college hockey program was announced at the Bridgestone Arena in Tennessee, the site of the NHL Draft. It will be the first at a historically black college and university (HBCU). The club will be Tennessee State and play at the ACHA club hockey division level. The coaching staff is yet to be determined. The project was an all-in process as the NHL, NHLPLA, and College Hockey Inc. were all involved. The program will start in the 2024-25 season with a look toward going varsity Division-1 level down the road, and it will be the first hockey at an HCBU, hopefully leading to more significant participation of Blacks, Latinos, and other ethnic groups in the sport of hockey in the US and around the world. The college hockey season is over by nearly three months activity continues as Quinnipiac University stands at the mountaintop. UCONN HOCKEY HOME Read the full article

The 13 Best Out This World Podcasts of 2019.
As 2019 comes to a close the one thing that stands out in the Fortean world is UFOs and how they went mainstream this year. No longer relegated to blogs and the History Channel, news outlets like CNN, Fox, The Times, and so many more have placed UFO related stories on the forefront of their news. From the Navy announcing new UFO reporting processes, to storming Area 51, everyone was talking about the subject.
One medium that was ahead of the curve and has taken the subject seriously for a long time is podcasting. There is no shortage of shows that focus on the UFO phenomenon, but some stand out above all the others. The best shows covering this topic are fun, informative, and bingeworthy. They tell you the story, lay out the facts, and have some laughs along the way.
With that in mind, here are the 13 best “Out Of This World” podcasts that you should be listening to right now.
1) Hysteria 51
Hysteria 51 is a weekly podcast that takes an every-man approach to the world of the weird – aliens, mysteries, the paranormal, the unusual, and the unexplained. Hosts John Goforth, Brent Hand, and Conspiracy Bot (a cranky robot bent on world domination who also happens to be the show’s head researcher) examine a different topic each week and generally come to one conclusion…the truth is out there, but you won’t find it here.
Brent and John’s dedication as researchers specializing in UFO and Paranormal topics has helped turn Hysteria 51 into a household name in the “world of the weird”.

2) Stuff They Don’t Want You To Know
Since 2008, Stuff They Don't Want You To Know has delved into the murky world of everything from UFOs to lost cosmonauts and allegations of the paranormal, applying critical thinking to the world's most prevalent conspiracy theories and, more often than not, discovering the disturbing grains of truth hidden in the heart of paranoia. Join Ben Bowlin, Matt Fredrick, and Noel Brown as they embark on their continuing quest to fit the puzzle pieces together, to connect the dots and follow the breadcrumbs into the truth behind the curtain, from the furthest reaches of the universe to the innermost depths of the human mind.

3) Somewhere In The Skies
Somewhere in the Skies is a weekly podcast dedicated to discussing UFOs, the paranormal, and just plain weird. Hosted by author and UFO journalist, Ryan Sprague, the show features current UFO events from around the world, audio docs, and special guests. Join Ryan as he asks new questions, and perhaps even finds some answers to the mysteries that lay somewhere in the skies.

4) Blurry Photos
Blurry Photos explores the unexplained, explains the unexplored, and seeks the facts behind the fiction of the world’s most fascinating, unbelievable, and chilling mysteries and legends. Focusing on lesser-known topics of Forteana, conspiracy, history, and folklore, Blurry Photos is driven by the desire for a better understanding of fringe subjects through research, storytelling, and rational thinking. Listeners have said it’s like a contemporary audio version of “In Search Of,” and it’s “like Lore with a personality and a better narrator.”

- filmmaking, drawing and flag-making, juxtaposing and performing British, Black, Ghanaian and queer cultural histories in her navigation of self
-Makes flags inspired by Fante Asafo war flags of coastal Ghana made in resistance to colonial rule. Her own flags are centered around the landscapes of Dartmouth, where she was raised, and the ecological processes that happen there
-uses geometric forms found in Tartan cloth, circuitry and pinnacles of rock.
- ‘ The presence of her figure – as a woman of colour – against the sublime Devon landscape throws into question ideas of “deep” England and what it means to claim ownership over the rural.’ This is something that I find very interesting, as the spaces that my characters take up tend to me outside of visible ownership or use. I think ownership of land and spaces and what spaces are public or not is very interesting and important to the idea of survival in parallel systems.
-Film work: retells traditional folklore from a black and lesbian perspective and journeys through her past suing analogue film.
Terratypes show at Spike Island Gallery:
- including works on paper, photographs and bronzes that build upon the artist’s ongoing research into hostile wildlands, and personal relationship to the energy, mythology and memories stored deep within the British landscape.
- the works draw connections between microchip circuitry, tartan textile fabrics and ancient rock formations.
- Heavily worked sheets of blank newsprint are hand-rubbed with foraged natural pigments, where they take on geological and geographical information in ochre, graphite and manganese - are pieced together in geometrical formations before being steeped in water
- Looming over these modestly-sized pieces are freestanding Liths in which slithers of stained and modified newsprint, torn from the Terratypes, are flattened, scanned and enlarged into monolithic structures reminiscent of standing stone formations. Encased in totemic wooden frames, these structures evoke portals or doorways to an alternate landscape... They recall the wonder of stone circles in charged rural spaces yet like these sites, are equally unknowable and mysterious.

UCONN HUSKIES TOPS UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA-ANCHORAGE IN OT

By: Sam Zis, Howlings STORRS, CT – Propelled by two goals from Hudson Schandor, the University of Connecticut Huskies defeated the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in overtime, 4-3, in front of 2,691 at the first-ever students-only hockey game at Tuscano Family Ice Forum Thursday night. At 2:37 of overtime, Ryan Tverberg found Schandor open and hit him with a tape-to-tape pass. Schandor then beat Seawolves goalie Jared Whale for the game-winner and his second goal of the game. Despite the need for overtime, the Huskies controlled the contest throughout. The Seawolves were dominant early, coming out of the gate quickly about building a 7-1 lead in shots in the first five of the game. After a lot of back-and-forth play, the Huskies broke through first with 8:39 left in the period. Schandor tallied his first of the game off a sparkling pass from Justin Pearson. The puck hit Whale but found a way to squeeze into the net. The Huskies had a power play opportunity at 15:17, Seawolves forward Connor Marrit took a tripping penalty, but despite some solid scoring chances, the Huskies still went to the locker room up 1-0 and managed to even up the shots at ten. If there were any nerves on either bench to start the game, they were a distant memory by the time the second period started. The game was much more fluid, and both teams established flow and some consistency in their respective game. UConn doubled their lead at 9:48 and broke the silence of the second frame off a slick deflection goal by Tristan Frase and assisted by Harrison Rees and Tabor Heaslip The Seawolves would finally break through and cut the lead in half with just over 4 minutes left to play in the period. Jared White Buried a rebound on the power play. The assist was given to Dylan Findlay. To start the third period, the Huskies were put on a power play when Seawolves defenseman Carson Kosobud took a cross-checking penalty at 2:00. The Huskies capitalized as Connecticut native Nick Capone whizzed a one-timer past Whale to make it 3-1 in favor of the home team. But the Seawolves refused to quietly and again cut the Huskies' two-goal advantage in half just 35 seconds later when freshman forward Conor Cole found Matt Allen in front of the net for a point-blank shot, and it was 3-2. Despite the Huskies' dominant play, the Seawolves found the equalizer at 13:04 when Alex Gomez finished off a rebound surrendered by UConn netminder Logan Terness (28 saves) of a Maximilion Helgeson shot. The Huskies pressed for the game-winner in regulation; however, they couldn’t beat the skilled Seawolves netminder. After two unanswered goals to end regulation, it might have seemed to some that the Seawolves were in control with momentum, but the Huskies came out to OT on a mission. No underestimating the fantastic effort from Whale (36 saves) that gave the Seawolves life in the game. The University of Connecticut Huskies are set to face off against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats at home Saturday at 3:05 PM. UConn improves to 18-10-3 on the season and 6-2-3 in overtime. Udofia Named Aetna Fellow at Hartford Stage; “Sweeney Todd” cast at CT Rep; “Cyrano” Sets Sales Record at Goodspeed
Playwright Mfoniso Udofia will be in residence at Hartford Stage, Liz Larsen and Terrence Mann will head the cast of "Sweeney Todd" at CT Rep, and other theater news from Connecticut and elsewhere.
Mfoniso Udofia is the latest playwright who’s been named as an Aetna New Voices Fellow at Hartford Stage. The fellowship is a one-year residency for “important playwrights of diversity and color to develop work and become involved in the ongoing life of Greater Hartford.”
Earlier this year, Udofia was the mentor for Hartford Stage’s annual Write On playwriting competition for high school students. She is best known for her nine-part cycle of plays about the Ufot family of Nigeria immigrants, including “Sojourners” and “Her Portmanteau.” (The playwright herself is a first-generation American with Nigerian parents.) Udofia held a similar residency this past theater season at the Playwright’s Center in Minneapolis.
The previous Aetna New Voices Fellows have been Jorge Ignacio Cortinas, Luis Alfaro, Daniel Beaty, Quiara Alegriá Hudes, Hana Sharif, Will Power, Marcus Gardley, Matthew Lopez, Janine Nabers, Kimber Lee, Christina Anderson and Kaneza Schaal — quite an impressive group, working in a range of theatrical styles. Some of these fellows have had their works produced at Hartford Stage, including Beaty’s “Resurrection” and “Breath and Imagination,” Hudes’ “Water by the Spoonful” Lopez’s “The Whipping Man,” “Somewhere” and “Reverberation.”
The Scorecard
Swing your razor wide! Connecticut Repertory Theatre has announced the cast for “Sweeney Todd: A Musical Thriller in Concert,” which opens the theater’s Nutmeg Summer Series at the Harriet S. Jorgensen Theatre on the UConn campus in Storrs, June 21 through July 1.
Nutmeg Series Artistic Director Terrence Mann, fresh from starring in “Jerry Springer The Opera” off Broadway, will play the title role of the demon barber of Fleet Street.
Liz Larsen, who has played Carole King’s mother Genie for four years in “Beautiful” on Broadway and was heard earlier this month in the Hartford Symphony Orchestra “Love on Broadway” concert, will be Nellie Lovett. Andréa Burns (Broadway’s “On Your Feet”) is Beggar Woman, Ed Dixon (the recent Broadway revivals of “Anything Goes” and “Sunday in the Park with George”) is Judge Turpin, Lu DeJesus is Beadle Bamford, Hugh Entrekin is Anthony Hope, Kenneth Galm is Tobias Ragg, Nicholas Gonzalez plays both Pirelli and Daniel O’Higgins and Emilie Kouatchou is Johanna Barker. The ensemble consists of Ryan Albinus, Alex Campbell, Cydney Clark, Olivia Fenton, Lauryn Hobbs, Kelley McCarty, Charlie Patterson, Gregory Rodriguez, and Brandon Wolfe. You’ll recognize the names of a few current or recent UConn acting students in there. Alex Campbell is a current UConn MFA acting student who played Rosalind in “As You Like It” last month.
Mann and Larsen were both in a previous CT Rep concert-style musical, “Les Miserables” in 2015. Nutmeg Summer Series details are at crt.uconn.edu.
“Cyrano” Sets Sales Record
“Cyrano,” the new musical based on Edmond Rostand’s late-19th century romantic swashbuckler “Cyrano de Bergerac,” set a new box office record at Goodspeed Musicals. Tickets went on sale to the general public May 21, and a Goodspeed spokesperson says “We sold the most in one day for any show in our 55 year history — nearly double the old record!”
“Cyrano” stars Peter Dinklage and Haley Bennett, and features music by three members of the band The National: Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner and Matt Berninger. The musical is directed by Erica Schmidt, who also wrote its book.
“Cyrano” runs Aug. 3 through Sept. 2 at the Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, where the Goodspeed workshops new musicals. Sales are brisk, but apparently there are still tickets to be had. Details at 860-873-8668, goodspeed.org.
Back in Black
The Shubert in New Haven has added a couple of one-nighters to its fall schedule: “Sister’s Back to School Catechism: The Holy Ghost and Other Terrifying Tales” Oct. 13 and comedian Lewis Black’s “The Joke’s on US” tour Nov. 11.
“Back to School” is part of the “Late Nite Catechism” series of comic lectures by a stern nun. New Haven’s Long Wharf Theatre has hosted many editions of the series, but not this one.
Black, the venerable TV comedy-news monologist, is also a prolific playwright who studied at the Yale School of Drama and has had many of his works staged at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. He’s brought his one-man comedy concerts to Connecticut many times.
Details at 203-562-5666, shubert.com.
Ramping Up in Ridgefield
Summer and fall attractions at the Ridgefield Playhouse include an outdoor 90-minute Shakespeare on the Green production of “Hamlet” July 22 and a slew of concerts by Broadway theater stars: Cynthia Erivo Sept. 16, Ed Asner in Ed Weinberger’s one-man play “A Man and His Prostate” Sept. 30, Tony Danza’s solo act “Standards & Stories” Oct. 27, Bebe Neuwirth’s “Stories and Song with Piano” Nov. 10 and Ben Vereen in “Steppin’ Out for the Holidays” Dec. 2. There are also two vocal quartet shows tailor-made for “Jersey Boys” fans: “Under the Streetlamp,” which features former members of the Four Seasons musical’s Broadway cast, Oct. 5, and “The Jersey Tenors,” a pop-operatic thing, Sept. 22.
The playhouse also screens the National Theatre Live series and other filmed-theater events. Next up are “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” June 15, “Bandstand: The Broadway Musical on Screen” June 25.
Obie CT
The Obie Awards, for distinguished work off Broadway, were presented May 21 in New York. Among the many honorees was Amy Herzog’s drama “Mary Jane,” which premiered at Yale Rep last year before moving to Broadway with the same director (Anne Kauffman) but a different cast. “Mary Jane” earned awards for Herzog, Kauffman and its New York star Carrie Coon.
Composer Stephen Trask, who grew up in New London and went to Wesleyan University, performed the song “Wig in a Box” to mark the 20th anniversary of the original off Broadway production of the musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Trask was living in New Haven at the time of “Hedwig”’s initial success.
In Case You’ve Forgotten…
The Steve Martin and Martin Short special “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life” debuted May 25 on Netflix. The theater concert played The Bushnell in February, a few months after the special was filmed at an earlier tour stop in Greenville, S.C. Watch it for Short’s nudie rock musical parody “Step-Brother to Jesus.”
