There’s a tangle of thoughts and feelings at the bottom of Taerae’s inability to ask for what he wants. It should be uncomplicated and painless, with Matthew, and it often is. However, there’s a hard-set boundary that Taerae still can’t cross, not even in his own mind. Chalk it up to growing up in a religious household, or to realizing he liked men when he was already in his twenties, or to his general over-thinker tendencies. sunlight spills into your kitchen through your cracked blinds, illuminating the room in a golden glow. the air conditioner quietly hums from another room, fading into the background and creating an effect akin to white noise. your sock-clad feet glide against the polished hardwood floor of your apartment effortlessly. SEOK MATTHEW chuckles as you twirl around your kitchen, approaching him with a bright smile. 

“come on,” you laugh, reaching out towards him. matthew takes your hand into his own with ease, intertwining your fingers together without a second thought. you can faintly smell the citrusy aroma of his cologne still lingering on the fabric of his shirt. “dance with me.” 

matthew cocks his head as he sighs in faux disbelief. “right now? really?” 

you take a step closer, raising your free hand to cup his cheek. matthew’s hand falls to your waist in response, resting comfortably just above your hip. his touch sends shivers down your spine and butterflies swarming throughout your stomach. your heartbeat speeds up just a little in your chest. “why not?” you shrug.

matthew relents with a soft chuckle, raising your hands above his head as he gestures for you to twirl around. your bodies move in tandem as you guide him around the small rooms of your cozy apartment. heat floods his cheeks when you laugh loudly. the sound fills the space with light and warmth. it feels like he can never get enough of it. it feels like home. 

matthew’s hand lingers against the small of your back as you lean in, wrapping your arms around his neck. your fingertips caress his bare skin, skimming over the edges where thin fabric gives way to his broad muscles. butterflies swarm throughout his stomach when you lean in to rest your head against the crook of his neck, pressing a faint kiss against the skin you can reach. “i love you, matt,” you whisper quietly. 

a red hue decorates his ears when he leans in to press a feather-light kiss against your temple. “i love you, too,” he murmurs. it’s only when you smile at him, soft and sweet, that matthew knows for sure: he wants to spend the rest of his life with you.
