Five movies about young men in love with older women.
Harold and Maude. D: Hal Ashby (1971). Harold, a death-obsessed 19-year old (Bud Cort) falls for a concentration-camp survivor and cheerleader for life, Maude (Ruth Gordon) in a romance that’s as much goth/hippy as May/December.
To Die For. D: Gus Van Sant (1995). A naïve and love-struck teenager (Joaquin Phoenix ) is coerced by a media-obsessed femme fatale (Nicole Kidman) into killing her husband in this blacker-than-black comedy.
Rushmore. D: Wes Anderson (1998). A precocious student at a prestigious prep school (Jason Schwartzman) develops an obsession with a teacher (Olivia Williams) and we see how cringeworthy and touching adolescent crushes can be.
American Pie. D: Paul Weitz (1999). Okay so sex with an older woman isn’t all that shocking in a movie where a character has sex with an apple pie. But DUDE! She’s Stifler’s Mom!
The Piano Teacher. D: Michael Haneke (2002). A college student (Benoit Magimel) steps into an affair with his sadomasochistic teacher (Isabelle Huppert) leading to much weirdness all around. Huppert is as disturbing as she is revelatory.

Got a chance to have a few days off from work during the tranquil days of Holy Week and while lazily taking advantage of the 3-day work break blended by a weekend, I happen to stumble upon the link to the trailer of the movie which stars my forever favorite Holllywood Actress, Anne…

So There's This Girl...
May-December budding friendship or modern-day flirtation?
Yup. This is about a girl, a woman, and I am so confused. The backstory is brief. I started a new job working at a small community grocery store. It’s a grocery store, a community hub of sorts actually, and I’m a checker and she is a regular. I don’t really know anything about her and yet I feel like I know her well because she is open and, well maybe that is what is happening. She is open.…

anyway. I think the work may december does in illustrating how a perpetrator of violence can continue to view themselves as, if not a victim, then at least a passive party in the situation is remarkable. gracie’s insistence that joe pursued her, that she was the less mature party from the start, her meltdown about the canceled cake order that joe has to not only eat but act out enjoyment of in order to calm her down, her recollection of her brothers threatening boys who might have taken interest in her in adolescence, it’s all in the service of crafting her vulnerability, displacing her agency as a grown woman onto joe both at the beginning of their relationship and in the present. she becomes effectively another child for him to take care of in addition to the kids he has been responsible for since 14. the tell is of course in the control she maintains to present the situation as entirely of his doing—she has to feed the narrative framing to joe because it sits in such obvious contrast to his reality. “who was the boss?” is a question that answers itself as she tries to force him yet again to accept the lie of his childhood agency.

- God, I can't tell if we're connecting or if I'm creating a bad memory for you in real time, but I can't help it.
- No, we're connecting, Dad. It's okay. It's okay.
