In their paper published in the journal Ancient Mesoamerica, John Linden and Victoria Bricker suggest that the calendar might be representing a much longer timescale than others had considered.
In studying ancient Maya inscriptions, prior researchers had come across mention of a system they referred to as the 819-day count, which appeared to be in reference to a calendar of some sort. But the astronomers had not left behind any other sort of definition or text describing how it might fit in with their regular calendar system. Prior researchers had found some evidence suggesting that it might be tied to the synodic period, the cyclic period that describes when a given planet will appear at a given point in the sky. They noted that for Mercury, the synod period is 117 days, which, when multiplied by seven, equals 819. Unfortunately, the same formulation did not work with the other planets, leaving the 819-day count a mystery—until now.
When the researchers struck upon the idea of extending the amount of time that the 819-day count might be used for representing the synodic period for all of the known planets over many years, they found things lined up perfectly. They found, for example, that multiplying 819 by 20 equals 16,380 (approximately 45 years). And 13 cycles of Saturn's 378-day synodic period adds up to 4,914 days, which is the same as six times 819.

As today’s solar eclipse is almost upon North Americans, step into the world of the ancient Maya and discover the cosmic battles that lit up their heavens! This article explores the fascinating relationship between the Maya civilization and their celestial observations, especially solar eclipses.
Did you know that the Maya were among the few ancient societies that could predict solar eclipses with remarkable accuracy? These events were not just astronomical phenomena to them but signified heavenly battles and moments of cosmic renewal, deeply intertwined with their religion and culture.

Eclipse October 2023 Through Obsidian
One of the things I learned on my travels is how the ancient Mayans were able to observe the transit of the planet we call Mercury across the sun. Obviously not something easy to see. Mayans used obsidian as a sun viewer, like you see here. (they probably made theirs much bigger 😂 mine is a pendant.)
When I first learned this it blew my mind! I wondered if other ancient cultures also knew this. I asked an Egyptologist friend and he said that the Egyptians worked with obsidian all the time - they used knives made of it as scalpels. He didn't know if it was specifically used for astronomy, but it's highly likely.
I'd love to hear from other folks who've studied ancient civilizations if they it this way.
The one thing a Mexican astronomer warned me about is not to use obsidian to look at the sun extensively because it doesn't block UV, so staring could still damage my eyes. Thus, I also had regular eclipse glasses.

ACTIVE SUNSPOT 8/1/2023: Set your watch. 3 hours from now there should be another M-class solar flare. That's how often sunspot AR3380 has been exploding: https://spaceweather.com/images2023/01aug23/boomboom_strip.jpg Extreme ultraviolet flashes from this sunspot have been ionizing the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a series of shortwave radio blackouts around all longitudes of our planet. If this continues, ham radio operators may notice frequent loss of signal and other propagation effects at frequencies below 15 MHz. The explosions have also hurled some faint CMEs into space. NOAA analysts are modeling them now to see if any will hit Earth. Stay tuned. (SpaceWeather.com)

BRIGHT FIREBALL RATTLES THE EASTERN USA 8/2/2023: West Virginia: 2:13 AM: 2 Booms, 1 Bright Flash, 3 Distinct Fragments:
This morning just after 2 a.m. EDT, sonic booms rolled across the eastern USA, shaking buildings hard enough to wake observers. Sky watchers looked up and saw a brilliant fireball tearing itself apart overhead. Amateur astronomer Bill Stewart of Ceredo, West Virginia, was outside on his rooftop observatory and accidentally videoed his own reaction to the booming flash: https://youtu.be/9q_Crmh4zWw "It was at 2:13 a.m.," says Stewart. "The fireball made two audible booms. After one bright flash it broke into 3 distinct fragments. One remained bright as it descended below the horizon. It could have possibly touched down although I didn’t hear it impact." The American Meteor Society has collected more than 65 eyewitness reports from 9 US states. The fireball first appeared over Ohio, streaked south, then petered out over Georgia. Observers said "it flashed like lightning," "it shook my house," and "I've never seen anything like it." "I agree it was brighter," says Stewart. "The reflection of the fireball was cast on a metal roof below, quite vividly, whereas the Moon was not as reflective." There are currently three active meteor showers capable of producing bright fireballs: The Perseids, Alpha Capricornids, and Southern Delta Aquariids. However, the fireball's path through the sky doesn't match any of those showers. It may have been a random meteoroid--also known as a "sporadic." Random meteoroids hit Earth all the time as our planet plows through old clouds of comet dust and asteroid debris, which litter interplanetary space. On any dark night you can see a handful of bright sporadics. This fireball, however, may be exceptional. According to NASA statistics, sporadic fireballs exceeding supermoon brightness disintegrate in Earth's atmosphere no more than once every year or so. At its peak, the fireball outshined the supermoon also visible in Stewart's video: https://spaceweather.com/images2023/02aug23/splash.jpg (SpaceWeather.com)

“Although prior research has sought to show planetary connections for the 819-day count, its four-part, color-directional scheme is too short to fit well with the synodic periods of visible planets,” the study authors write. “By increasing the calendar length to 20 periods of 819-days a pattern emerges in which the synodic periods of all the visible planets commensurate with station points in the larger 819-day calendar.”
That means the Mayans took a 45-year view of planetary alignment and coded it into a calendar that has left modern scholars scratching their heads in wonder.

Detours to you - 19
Hello all,
I am off on holidays to Lisbon tomorrow for a few days to celebrate my bday so I will leave you with a new chapter. It's Maya's bday too (she is a January girl like me).
Hope you will enjoy the fluff
MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
A week elapsed and Maya’s birthday had finally arrived. They had waited until the Saturday for the celebrations and Aelin had closed the shop for a day so they could host the party there. They had invited her parents, Lys and Aedion, Elide was coming on her own since Lorcan was on shift, a few kids from the school that Maya liked and Rowan had the day off but was on call. Aelin just hoped nothing would interrupt the day. He needed a day of celebrations. His week had been hellish. She had accompanied him to the funeral of his three firefighters and had seen how broken he had been. Rowan had been grieving and had been so busy with the investigation that she worried about him.
Now he was at home with Maya while she was at the bookshop getting it ready for the party.
They had gone for a mix theme of hockey and space. Rowan had started teaching her basic astronomy with the telescope he had gifted her and Maya had fallen in love with it.
A knock came at the front door and she saw her parents. Aelin invited them in with a hug “Hi mum, and dad.”
“Hi Aelin, where’s the birthday girl?”
“Rowan will bring her here as soon as I gave him the okay that the shop is ready.”
Evalin walked around the shop and looked at the decorations “This looks lovely.”
Rhoe looked at the space decorations and Aelin walked up to him “Rowan had been teaching her about the stars.”
“I know,” her father added “She is actually teaching me all about it now.”
Aelin laughed “she is teaching me too.”
“I brought a lot of biscuits and a cake too.” Added Evalin, showing her daughter the box she was carrying.
Aelin grabbed the containers with food and placed them on the table that they had set up..
“Mum she will love your cake, it has the perfect level of chocolate.”
Evalin laughed “I also have a box for Rowan. I know he is not a fan of sweets so I made him the orange oatmeal biscuits that he loves so much.”
Aelin thanked her mother and she knew that she had always had a special place in her heart for Rowan.
Lysandra, Aedion and Elide arrived not long after together with the other few guests. She had texted Rowan that it was time to bring Maya. When later on he texted her that they had parked the car and walking to the shop, the group had switched off the lights and got ready for the surprise.
Rowan walked with his daughter on his hand and at the shop, he used the key Aelin had given him. As soon as they were inside, the darkness got replaced by a starry sky and slowly the people appeared and Aelin walked to her daughter and Rowan was at her side “Happy birthday, Maya.”
Maya hugged them both and then looked at the stars “mama your shop has stars.”
“Yes, baby, do you like it?”
“I love it so much.”
Slowly they turned up the lights and allowed her to see all the guests.
“Nana.” Maya ran to her grandparents.
“Happy birthday, my love, you are a big girl now.”
“Yes, nana I am six.” She proudly lifted her fingers.
Aelin encouraged the kids to gather in the children section where they had created a corner for them. She had also organised a story telling session with cake after the presents. But most of all, she was looking forward to see the present she got from her and Rowan. They had bought her first bike. She knew Maya was going to love it.
Rowan walked to her side “you have done a wonderful job with the bookshop. The starry sky  is perfect.”
Aelin leaned her head against his shoulder “You should see my mum’s hockey themed cake.”
“She will feel like the queen of the world today.” His arms wound around Aelin’s waist and pulled her closer “she is definitely my princess.”
“I found this young lady running around, does anyone know her?” Aedion was carrying Maya potato sack style and the girl giggled at her uncle antics “Dad save me, the dragon has taken me.”
Rowan laughed and followed the two, pretending to fight Aedion while he growled.
One of the mums walked at her side “He is so good to her.”
Aelin nodded while sipping her juice.
“You know that at school he has won the title of DILF, right?”
Aelin knew. The news had reached her and a lot of the mums had a crush on him. It had pissed her off to no end and she had been jealous too. Just as she was jealous of Lyria. The whole relationship between them was still very frail, they had not set on a label but she wanted to be possessive. Rowan was hers.
“I know and I hate it.”
“My husband was their target until Rowan came up. I know how you feel.”
“I hate them and that Remelle woman and her son caused so much grief to Maya.”
The woman gave a nervous laugh “I had my running ins with Remelle. She almost messed up my marriage with her lies.”
“Mama, we are opening presents!” Maya walked to her grabbing her hand to drag her where all the presents were gathered.
The adults they all sat down and Aelin took Maya where all the gifts were, and started to hand out all the parcels.
“Ok birthday girl, let’s open up a few present, shall we?”
Maya started jumping up all excited “Yes! Yes! I want the presents!”
They started with the ones from her school friends then it was then time of Elide and Lorcan who had bought her a pass for the observatory and then a limited edition jersey of the Stags. Maya ran to hug Elide. Lorcan could not be present because he was working  “Thank you auntie Elide. I love it.”
“Mama, can I wear it?”
“Not yet, after cake maybe but not now. We don’t want to ruin it with chocolate.”
“Ok.”
Aelin placed the item of clothing aside and grabbed a present she knew was from Aedion and Lysandra. They had gifted her a super special edition book of Terrasen folktales and then her own hockey stick with the Stags colours.
Maya screamed happily and grabbed her stick swinging as if she was playing “I am playing hockey!”
They all laughed and Maya kept playing happily until Rowan pulled her back to attention for her grandparents presents who had given her a tent for her bedroom that had a space theme and then a projector for her bedroom so she could project the sky in her room.
“Nana and I thought they would be nice for the days you can’t go out in the garden. So you can have the sky in your room.”
Maya ran to her grandparents and hugged them tightly “Thank you.”
“Come on now, you have the last one from us.”
Maya walked back to her parents and Aelin and Rowan sat down beside her and Aelin handed her a small packet. When she struggled Rowan helped her opening it and she looked at her present with a curious face. Rowan lifted the passes “Maya, this is a ticket for a special event the Stag are doing and meeting the fans.”
Maya looked at her dad with big green eyes “Dorian too?”
Rowan caressed her face “yes baby, we are going to meet all the Stags again.”
She threw herself at her dad and Aelin moved closer brushing her back. They remained in silence while they cuddled their daughter then Rowan pulled back “we have one last surprise for you.” He passed Maya to her mum and walked at the back of the shop. When he came back he was pushing a green bicycle and Maya ran to him “Is it for me?”
“Of course,” he grabbed her hand and helped her sit on. The bike still had stabilisers and Rowan showed her how to use the pedals and within minutes Maya was cycling, with a fussy Rowan hovering over her.
“I think you guys topped her presents. Aeds and I tried to give her a cool one.”
“Lys, your presents were great as well.”
Lysandra stared at Rowan with Maya “He is so cute with her.”
Aelin nodded.
“So, are you getting married next?”
She chuckled “Elide asked me the same thing a while ago.”
“Because you both have made some strides and are improving, that is the next logical step.”
Aelin was silent for a moment “As I said to El, we are not there yet. For now, let’s all concentrate on your wedding.”
“Mama look, I am cycling.”
Aelin looked at her daughter on her bike and smiled. Rowan had approached her one day saying that Maya had mentioned about having a bike like the other kids. He said that he wanted to teach her and Aelin had agreed. She loved that Rowan had involved her too after the hockey classes fiasco. Classes that were going to start next week and their daughter was the most excited person ever.
“You are doing so well, Maya.”
They were all in the middle of having cake when Rowan’s radio became alive. Everyone fell silent and he grabbed it running away to a quiet corner.
Aelin watched him with a tightness in her chest. She knew he was on call and that if an emergency happened he’d have to leave. She just hoped that for one day Orynth would have no drama so he’d be able to celebrate his daughter’s birthday in peace. It was the first one for him and she wanted it to be special for both.
He came back at the front and she knew from his face that it was not good. She had forgotten how easily she could read his expressions “What is it?”
“I need to go. I am sorry.”
Aelin hugged him tightly “Be careful, please.” A soft whisper against his neck, the scent of pine and snow soothing her soul “Come back to me. To us.”
Rowan kissed her on her lips and pulled back, kneeling in front of Maya “I have to go to work and help people.” His heart broke at Maya’s wobbly lip “I will see you later at home, baby.”
Maya threw her arms around him and softly sobbed.
“Happy birthday, my love.”
Rowan then forced himself to stand and take a step towards the door. He cast a last glance at the party and then walked out in a run.
Aelin watched Rowan go.
There was an ache in her chest. An ancient fear rising in her. It was the anguish she had felt when he was on active duty and a regular firefighter. Waiting for him to come home after his shift and knowing he was safe. Aelin had accepted the dangers of his job the day she had confessed him she was in love with him.
Gods, she loved him. She had to tell him. She let him go to his job without telling that she loved him.
Aelin prayed Mala to bring him back to her.
I will come back to you.

1000-Year-Old Maya Tomb Unearthed in Mexico
Mexican archaeologists unearthed a richly adorned human body in a grave that could be more than 1,000 years old, in an area where workers were finishing construction on a major tourist rail project, the country's national antiquities institute INAH said on Monday.
The discovery took place this month during archaeological salvage work carried out in tandem with building a multibillion-dollar tourist train in southern Mexico designed in large part to draw tourists to southern Mexico's many ancient Maya sites, as well as nearby top beach resorts like Cancun and Tulum.
The rail project, known as the Maya Train, is a top economic development priority of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. It employs teams of relatively well-funded archaeologists who have rushed to complete excavations so the construction work will not be delayed. Digs elsewhere in the country have suffered budget cuts.

The latest burial discovery took place during work on the construction of a hotel near the major Maya ruins of Palenque in Chiapas state, once home to one of the ancient civilization's largest and most sophisticated urban centers.
The skeletal remains were found some 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the city's center, home to towering temples and a sprawling palace compound, in a stone box. They likely pertain to an elite resident of the city, known by the ancient Maya as Lakamha'.
The box also held three ceramic vessels, ear flares and a pair of greenstone beads.
INAH also noted that the individual was buried face up, his head facing north, adding that further testes are needed to determine the individual's exact age and other characteristics.
Scholars credit the ancient Maya with major human achievements in art, architecture, astronomy and writing.
Palenque, like dozens of other ancient cities clustered around southern Mexico and parts of Central America, thrived from around 300-900 AD.

The Mayans Galacticos mission originates from the stars. The various star systems comprise an integral federation. This mission began a long time ago (by terrestrial standards) and is anchored in the Pleiades with several starting points, including Arturo, Antares and Sirius. The Pleiades are also known as "the luminous still", which as our solar system revolves around Alción (the Gran Sol Centrale), the main star of the Pleiades, in a cycle of 26,000 years. The mission is multidimensional, albeit with a particular emphasis on the Velatropa sector. This region of our galaxy is defined by the Pulsar Vela, located in Orion's arm of what we call the Milky Way Galaxy, more specifically Vlatropa 24: intergalactic code name of our Sun, Kinich Ahau. Our solar system is at the center of an area of 6000 light years in diameter defined by the pulsar Vela (V), a residue of a supernova at incredible speed. A pulsar is a late, advanced state of what was once a supernova. Remember Vela is just a small (but powerful) “microbe” in the galaxy. This mission oversees the planetary system Velatropa 24, with particular focus on the five internal planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Maldek (Asteroid belt time). The Arturo Probe describes how this area of Velatropa 24, including Earth (Velatropa 24.3), became the quarantine zone of free will. This is also the area of a development program known as "the fall" 0 "original sin". It was known to beings from other parts of the galactic system that within the quarantine zone of free will there would be a learning process that would focus the karmic waste of many worlds systems into a structure that would inevitably reach a point where the process could not have gone beyond the entire system of Kinich Ahau. Once the problem in the Velatropa sector was quarantined, the "guardian angels" could keep an eye on it and with the indicated time approaching, they would have increased surveillance. Why is this even necessary? In the evolution process of this star system, Planet Earth (V. 24.3) has moved away from the frequency of natural time that works in the rest of life in the universe. The reason for what is known as the Mayan civilization and the Mayan astronomy system and mathematical calendars was to help restore the correct course of time on Earth. Mayans math is the jewel of this galactic system of knowledge brought to our planet. The High Hand of Sirius began to witness this march of events by understanding the battle being waged in the collective human mind. A remedy known as the Dream Spell was sent by Sirius through Arthur's force field to help humans cross dimensions and re-align with their dimensional destiny. The Dream Spell codes transmitted to José Argüelles/Valum Votan actually describe the harmonic register of movements for stabilization of Kinich Ahau's system (Sol or V. 24). The harmonious records of planetary orbits compared to others create cycles of synchronization over time called "Dream Spells" - the specific Dream Spell code for this time is known as the Earth Time Ship. The mathematical codes for the restructuring of the human species according to a galactic/harmonic time frequency. These codes have been reduced to the practical calendar format of 13 moons and 28 days (synchronous) and are based on Syrian cycles. This is all part of the Maya Galactica mission. Maya Galacticos are planetary navigators and mapographers of the Earth’s great psychic field, of the solar system, and beyond the galaxy. This means that their perceptions, ways of knowing and communication come from a high degree of telepathic tune with the cosmos. The galactic Mayan calendar is not what it seems. The ultimate purpose of this calendar (13 months 28 days) is to make sure that the Earth is tuned into the new galactic ray. As synchronous engineers, the Maya Galacticos first deposited these codes in the form of what we call the Maya civilization and then, as a new planetary dispensation, came the Dream Spell codes. After the Dream's Spell was published, many more quadratic/five-dimensional gifts are followed to define a terrestrial pathway to the stars, known as synchronous order. On the one hand, the goal of these tools is to prevent the planet from self-destructing, on the other hand, to stabilize the planet's consciousness in a cosmic resonance with the local galaxy, so that this has an effect on the Sun. As the sun goes through its internal crises, a stabilization of the solar frequency is created that changes consciousness on this particular planet. This is a unique situation in the final phase of the Velatropa sector experiment, with the V star. 24 (Our Sun) & V. 24.3 (planet earth) as points of interest. Pacal Votan is the head of the engineering team for this experiment.”

Replaying Nancy Drew without Cheating - Part 10: Curse of Blackmoor Manor
Tumblr media
Bruuuhhhh. This is the best project I have ever embarked on and I will tell you why. Never have I ever appreciated the gameplay and storytelling of Nancy Drew games this much before now, which is saying something, since I have always been a massive fan. Constantly switching between the game and Gameboomers ruins the immersion, and if there is ever a game you want to be immersed in, it’s this one. Still to this day, I think this is my number 1 Nancy game of all time. There are still over 20 more to go, including some I’ve never played before, so there is always time for me to change my mind. But goddamn, this is good.

The Curse of Blackmoor Manor is a MASTERPIECE. The backstory is rich and nicely tied together, and the gameplay is complex. The fact that Her made this entire family tree and a (more often than not, tragic) backstory for each person in it was awesome. And of course, the setting is super spooky. I got goosebumps multiple times even when I knew a scare was coming. I also love that the game relied less on dialogue than most other games, and really emphasized puzzles and exploring. Never even realized how much I enjoyed this aspect of the game - I like being shown and not told.
Surprisingly, I was NOT tempted to cheat in this game, despite it being one of the hardest games of the series, at least in my memory. I got frustrated at Alan’s ghost game, because there was one I kept missing in the hallway by the kitchen (which I believe was also the same one I missed every single time in prior plays before ultimately looking up the solution). Other than that, it is a very satisfying game and I had a very smooth playthrough, and it will have me humming “Brigitte” nonstop for likely the next month, much to my fiance’s chagrin.
Here are some of my thoughts:
1. I totally forgot how many random scenes there are in this game that aren’t triggered every time you play. I was waiting and waiting to see the lady in black floating down the hallway in the middle of the night, or to see Mrs. Drake putting a pendant over Linda’s doorframe, but instead I got the dream where the crests were flashing and a disembodied voice says, with a little too much cheer, “How bout we just shake this stuff off and go to the mall?” That was so wildly unsettling, and I had never seen it before with any playthrough. The dream with all the distorted portraits above Nancy’s bed with the sinister chuckling in the background is SO creepy and felt too much like a fever dream I would have if I came down with the flu on the moor.

2. I thought this before and I still think it now - how is a weak ass glowstick seriously the best source of portable light in the entire wretched mansion??
3. We should have been able to go into Mrs. Drake’s room. Robbed.
4. Kudos to the developers for including elements of cults, astronomy, and alchemy all in one game. The vibes were ~immaculate~.
5. Nigel Mookerjee had the most punchable face I’ve seen in a while. Almost as much as Shorty. I was so excited to terrorize him by moving the statue in the library that I ended up doing it WAY before I found the forge and even knew what I needed to do with that puzzle. I got it through a lot of trial and error. I just couldn’t wait to hear his screams.

6. I loathe Jane. It’s surprising I love this game so much, because I hate every single one of the characters (with the exception, of course, of LouLou, and Tommy at the pub). As the eldest child in my entire family, on both sides, I found her incessant need to latch onto me and have me constantly entertaining her completely triggering. As a kid, when the cage falls on top of her in the forge at the very end, I remember being disappointed that I actually had to help her out and couldn’t just let her suffocate in there. I also wish Nancy would have told Jane that Brady “Total Hottie” Armstrong effectively tried to kill Maya and is a terrible, terrible person, just to ruin that crush for her.
7. You probably think I’m a bad person based on 5 and 6. I’m sorry to tell you that you are right.
8. I want to live in a world where a few weeks of a hair growth product yields THESE sorts of results. No one would ever go bald! Everyone would have a lucious head of hair! Hairlines would be all the way down to eyebrows!
Tumblr media
9. The fact that this game was chock-full of puzzles and we had to do almost NO chores is so amazingly rare. After all the vegetable picking, horse and chicken feeding, chicken coop fixing, and egg collecting of SHA, it was nice to have a little break from being everyone’s bitch. I can forgive Mrs. Drake for making us organize her stupid succulents in a box. The alchemy puzzle was super fun, playing against Betty was super fun, finding the secret slide was fun as HECK, even figuring out the moving rooms (like, REALLY trying to figure it out rather than panicking and looking up the walkthrough) was fun(ish) too.
9a. If I could change one thing puzzle-wise, it would be the fact that we had to re-do the dragon hands/goblin swivels every time we wanted to get into a secret passageway. Very repetitive, which is never my cup of tea. Who would have thought, though, that the combinations would be so burned into my mind from childhood that I’d be able to open both just from muscle memory each time?
10. I want to know whose idea it was to print out these portraits (and spend good money to have them framed) of Hugh looking like a sweet puppy dog and Linda looking like the most unpleasant person in the world? Are these really the moments we want to remember?
Tumblr media
11. Finally, I think this is the first game where I found an Easter egg (the teeth!!). Is it the first one with an Easter egg at all? No, but for some reason it is the first one I have gotten throughout this playthrough. For some reason, when I think of Easter eggs in videogames, I always think of this particular Easter egg. The Easter egg of Easter eggs, if you will.
I kind of feel that moving on to the Secret of the Old Clock is going to feel like a major downgrade after this, just like playing most other games would feel like a downgrade. However, I will perservere, even when I am inevitably pulling my hair out trying to get par on Josiah’s golf course! 1930, Nancy saying “horsefeathers,” and never getting tipped on a telegram, here I come!
