【KagePro】 KagePro Manga Crit Rambles

Personal opinion/ramble piece.

I've been re-reading MR2's chapters, and while I enjoyed the character interactions + dialogue, I'm seriously not a fan of the generally undynamic art + janky pacing of the manga as a whole.

I also wish Kuroha/Saeru, especially the MR2 form, looked more monstrous and menacing and intimidating and dangerous in the manga art.

Like. Could we at least of had a hot snake demon man lmao cuz the manga is NOT doing him justice

Sayuki draws this form SO well in the Children Record Re:boot MV. Sayuki has such dynamic inking

I wanna see Sidu's concept art sketches... Iirc she was the one that designed Saeru's MR2 form

I personally dislike the KagePro manga art. I remember when I was a kid, I was like "I'm not a fan of the manga art cuz it doesn't suit KagePro"

And I would say now as an adult that the KagePro manga is so undynamic and boring to read.

It’s personally disappointing to me.

Like I bought the manga volumes despite my misgivings, out of love for the charas, and cuz I wanted to see the OG dialogues in JP.

So it's mainly the dialogue I'm interested in, though I am still grateful that we got a manga at all with visuals.

Along with the fact that Saeru would've looked hotter and more monstrous/intimidating in any other art style like ADHHDSHDHSH

Pretty unfortunate.

It doesn't have proper composition/page flow to connect scenes

So it's SO jarring when there are scene transitions, because it doesn't feel like it connects properly.

I've been especially thinking this while reading the final volume (chapters of MR2)

Cuz I feel like the entire manga desperately needed an artist that was capable of drawing more dynamic scenes, especially for MR2

Like the whole confrontation with Saeru at the end

The ending chapters of MR2 feel so abrupt and rushed to me

...

Even aside from the weak, un-dynamic art, the Kagerou Daze manga's art style is so boring looking and uninteresting to me

Iirc the KagePro manga was decided through an art contest/competition?

Mahiro was chosen as a beginner/amateur mangaka.

That’s fine, we all start somewhere. I also understand that making manga is hard.

But I personally wish the Kagerou Daze manga got a more experienced artist

Cuz the art just does not do the scenes or charas justice tbh

I was personally never a fan of the KagePro manga art style as a kid and that hasn't changed

And because the most important scenes lack dynamic-ness, it's hard to feel it emotionally too.

Like for example, the scene when Ayano and Mary are standing together to directly contrast the scene of Ayano turning her back on Mary in the rain

It's supposed to be an emotional scene, but the art doesn't convey it well, so I as the reader don't feel what it was intended to give off

Imo the Kagerou Daze manga's art style doesn't suit KagePro.

Hot take but the way the Kagerou Daze Manga draws Mary's Queen Form is my absolute least favourite out of all the KagePro medias.

Well, except for MCA (Anime Route), which is the fricking ugliest

It lacks the curls, weight, and volume of the hair, that all other depictions of Queen (Medusa form) Mary have. The hair looks so fricking flat, dude. It doesn't feel dynamic. It lacks depth

Sidu and Sayuki draw it really well.

Fate/Grand Order: From Lostbelt

I decided to put this one as an example because it has a storytelling style you'd tend to see in doujinshi. Simpler compositions with a focus on chara interactions + dialogue.

So I got reminded of Nakatani who's a manga artist who draws FGO: Anthology comic short stories

Like I expected interesting compositions from the KagePro manga more like these.

I'll show a few snippets of Nakatani's comics that depict short stories of the events of LB6 (Lostbelt 6) main story chapter in FGO

Ch. 18: Baobhan Sith takes a liking to the rhymes told from Panhuman History

Baobhan falling into the Great Pit + The Fall of the British Lostbelt (Faerie Kingdom)

Ch. 16: Morgan's Downfall + Oberon Vortigern: The Curtains Close (The Ending Act)

While Nakatani's art isn't very dynamic, they still manage to make up for it by having interesting artistic interpretations of FGO scenes (in-game) and interesting visuals and compositions in their manga panelling, at times.

These aren't 1-1 adaptations of Visual Novel cutscenes, but a new and different take on them.

Nakatani has a creative approach to depicting scenes + compositions. Really fits with the "fairytale storybook" theme.

The art isn't dynamic, but they still make up for it via interesting compositions, poses, detailing, inking, etc.

(Art style is a personal preference.)

Some of the chosen panels and panel shots are interesting.

Like I love the shot with Morgan and Oberon sm...

The flow of Morgan's hair...

How Oberon is shown to be standing in front of the curtains after Morgan's death. And how he refers to Morgan's Britain and Faerie Kingdom as a "Fairytale storybook crafted by her"

I love Oberon's line about Morgan's kingdom and the British Lostbelt being a fairytale storybook crafted by her...

I also really enjoy Oberon's My Room Line towards Morgan in-game in FGO, "That's why I'll say this to draw the line. I didn't hate the picture book (fairytale) you drew."

KagePro Manga

For example, I feel like the scene portraying Mary's guilt for "wanting too much" while the fallen MekaDan members are around her, in her mindscape/dreamscape could've been presented in a much more interesting way.

Like it could've taken a more fantasical approach with interesting compositions, more creative/artistic liberties in scene settings

In the Kagerou Daze manga, the poses and expressions are so flat and the art style is uninteresting as well (to me, personally)

Preference in art style is a personal taste, though.

Here, Mahiro Satou is drawing Jin's story writing

The Kagerou Daze manga has almost nothing going for it visually to me. It doesn't even have interesting compositions.

I do like some of the scenes it gave us (cute interactions between the MekaDan) and some MR2 exclusive scenes (Ayano and Mary, Saeru's backstory), but that's... it.

Cuz it's mainly the story/dialogues and character interactions I'm interested in, not really the art.

It seriously feels like it lacks pages in between scenes to properly join them together. It lacks proper page flow

I wonder if this manga was rushed to completion cuz it's even MORE noticeable in the later volumes compared to the older ones

Cuz Iirc the later manga became less heavy on screentone usage (understandable tho if it's for a timeline crunch)

Though I've definitely noticed a lot of visible improvement in Mahiro's art compared to when the series first started.

I can’t blame the mangaka if the manga was rushed by publishers or higher ups, so I’ll cut some slack there.

Cuz I feel like the whole confrontation with Kuroha/Saeru just needed a more experienced artist to be able to do it justice.

It seriously needed an artist capable of drawing more dynamic scenes.

Either that, or to rely more on more creative compositions and more artistic/fantastical storytelling.

Also I'm rereading the ending volumes of the KagePro manga and the pacing is sooo fucking janky.

Like the Ch. 65 scene with Seto and Mary holding hands, and then it just abruptly cuts to Saeru.

Like it's so ???

Like why does it just cut from Mary having a conversation with Azami in the Kagerou Daze to Kuroha/Saeru killing Seto. And the other members suddenly knocked down on the ground.

The pacing is sooooo janky.

Though maybe the manga was rushed to completion? In which case I'll cut more slack.

One of the alternative deviant by Pitchshifter album covers that was rejected by the MCA, universal record label.

“The mock original cover was created by vocalist, JS Clayden, as an extension of the concept of the distorted nuclear family originally debuted on the band's ".com" album; however, the record label feared legal reprisals for the use. And so, in defiance, the band commissioned a second cover by Artist William George as a parody-infused distortion of Norman Rockwell's "Thanksgiving." naturally, the record label freaked out even more over that version and refused to release it.

In a final attempt at something radical that would see the light of day, JS Clayden brokered a deal with Gee Vaucher (she of Crass art fame) to utilize her Pope/Queen image, colorized by NY graphic designer Howard Forbes. This version was approved and was ultimately released as the album's cover.

The original painting by William George was never furnished to the band (aren't record labels wonderful?) and Mr. George sadly died in 2017. And so, that artwork is probably lost to posterity--except for the low-resolution digital version included in this demo release.”

The approach of spooky season is always special with VoicePlay. In 2018, it meant that it was time for their second visit to Halloween Town, which involved even more elaborate makeup than the previous one. It also contains an important reminder — don't take unwrapped candy from strangers, no matter how little and cute they might be.

Trivia:

VoicePlay originally recorded this song for their 2012 Disney album, "Once Upon An Ever After".

This is the second of four Halloween videos they've made using music and imagery from The Nightmare Before Christmas. It also happened to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the movie.

Each of VoicePlay's video projects is usually handled from start to finish by whoever does the music, but for this one they spread their duties out a bit more. Layne did the vocal arrangement, while Geoff handled the video production process.

The guys are once again representing characters from the original movie — J.None is the wolfman, Eli is the mayor of Halloween Town, Geoff is one of the vampires, Earl is the behemoth, Layne is Lock, and the trick-or-treater is dressed as Jack.

The YouTube description contains another important safety tip — "There is only one Earl Elkins and he is not exactly human. Do NOT try to smash YOUR skull-meat with an axe… it will hurt."

The filming process for this video spanned two days — one for the framing scenes and the start of the singing, and another for their monster morphing.

The full transformations took more than 12 hours because of the extensive prosthetic makeup involved, not to mention contact lenses and costume changes. Their shot list was "the spreadsheet from hell" by necessity. Once a step in someone's monster makeup was added, it couldn't be taken off until the end.

The impressive makeup and prosthetics were designed by Andy Wright and Lia Forestner from Makeup & Creative Arts.

One of the trickiest parts of the makeup process was the fact that Layne turned out to be very ticklish when it came to being airbrushed and had trouble sitting still.

Among the carvings in the jack-o-lantern tower are an Oogie Boogie face, a Jack Skellington face, and a VoicePlay logo.

There was also a hidden bottle of Diet Mountain Dew on the back side for emergency high tenor hydration.

The onesies Eli and Earl are wearing at the beginning are references to their respective roles in "The Chicken Song".

Geoff's dragon onesie made another appearance four years later in a short of "I Put A Spell On You", dueting with Winifred Sanderson from PattyCake's Hocus Pocus videos.

The group created individual character posters in the style of Stranger Things to promote the video on social media.

The jowled prosthetic was added to the MCA / Morphstore collection as a custom item, with Eli as the model and the more generic product name of "fat boy".

The trick-or-treater is Layne's nephew, Jude. Though the over-the-shoulder shot of him knocking on the door is actually Kathy wearing the top of the costume and kneeling on the stoop. Apparently giving a young child lots of candy and then trying to get him to do something slowly isn't the best plan.

J.None had a late-night gig booked after the shoot, and was still wearing parts of his costume when he rushed out to get to that.

Rek Dunn, the guys' longtime friend and production collaborator, made a behind-the-scenes video as a project for a continuing education course he was taking.

The Makeup and Creative Arts team also made a behind-the-scenes video focused on the prosthetics processes.

Some aspects of the makeup made it a little difficult to enunciate. (Good thing their audio was prerecorded.)

“Magic” (1980) Olivia Newton-John MCA Records (Written by John Farrar) Highest U.S. Billboard Chart Position – No. 1

ONJ, queen of the echo, absolutely stole my heart the 4 weeks this was No. 1 on the top 40 charts for all of August, but I am sure it went on long after, because I vividly remember running home from 9th grade to wait by our giant television stereo console—6 feet long, in walnut—to hear it hauntingly waft over FM radio one more time and once again fuel my dreams.  The strings, the guitars, the little bit of ELO-like synthetic thing happening with the voices behind her, and yes, an echo on her voice to make Phil Spector weep, it was and is one of the greatest singles ever.  For certain it was one of the gayest.

The big push behind the Xanadu soundtrack was that one half of the LP was Olivia (and I know now her genius producer and songwriter John Farrar) and the other half a then riding-high ELO (Electric Light Orchestra).  Now ELO will show up here again; in the mid-70s the band produced Beatle-esque pop songs I adored, but at this stage I felt the singles were starting to verge on bombast (“All Over The World”, “I’m Alive”,  and “Xanadu”—which is possibly even more camp than the movie, and a famous flop—were the hit singles by ELO).  I also felt that the gorgeous things on her side of the record were rather sneered at as Top 40 pap, even though if you were to turn on any 80s station today it would be clear that the lasting hit from the soundtrack is “Magic”, and that you would be very hard pressed to hear “All Over The World” ever in your life again.   But no one is prepared to admit that, even though neither artists where ever considered cool, then or today.

The Pan Pacific Auditorium, built in L.A. in 1935 and used as an exterior for the motion picture Xanadu (1980).

I actually loved the movie, and ran home eagerly right after to make paintings inspired by the Los Angeles/Art Deco fantasia it presented, plus Olivia’s hair and clothes, which were peak that year.  All of the songs on Side ONJ (the album, which I am looking at, actually says ELO side and ONJ side!) were the really dreamy ones, and included two underrated ballads, “Suddenly”, her duet with Cliff Richard (Billboard No. 20) and “Suspended in Time”, another pyramid of echo.  But none of them could touch the hem of “Magic”, where the planets aligned so rare, and there were promises in the air, and she’d bring all your dreams alive…. for you.  

Well, me.  Especially me.

“Magic” 1980’s third biggest seller, was right behind Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in The Wall” and behind the no. 1 of the year, Blondie’s “Call Me”, the theme song to the motion picture American Gigolo, starring Richard Gere, written by Giorgio Moroder with lyrics by Deborah Harry (based on her impressions of the movie).  Gigolo, a film about a straight hustler in Armani clothes who works for a gay pimp, is one of the true style representations for the L.A. of 1979/80 (a feast for the eyes in terms of fashion and West Coast interior design), signaling both the extreme 70s feel of the movie, alongside the more Euro-centric eye toward the clothes and modernism that would define the first half of the 1980s that lie ahead.  It would be a Los Angeles/Art Deco fantasia of a very different and darker attitude.

As a further aside, Gere’s hustler character in the film was named "Julian", which was soon to be borrowed for the drug dealing character Julian in Bret Easton Ellis’ classic dystopian novel Less Than Zero (1983), leading to a vision of L.A. even darker still.

Did a redraw of Kuroha's face cuz I wasn't fully satisfied

New version: Changed the old one's eyes to the new brush type

I've been playing around with a new brush. I usually use CSP's old Oil paint flat brush (Version 1.10) but I've been trying out Aalmaluar (@/aalmaluar.t)'s brush set.

It's harder for me to control right now since I'm not used to it, but I love the weighted strokes… It's clearer and sharper than my old brush, which has a blunt softer edge. Both are nice

My style has really prominent thick eyelashes so it just doesn't look good when they can't be seen. I think the compromise for the black snake skin scales on his face is to lower the opacity to a dark gray, use a dark screentone, or use pitch black but outline the lines with white.

I bought from Aalmaluar's brush pack and figure drawing/gesture drawing challenge set, so I wanted to test out the brushes. I wanna level up my art game (over time) 🙏

That brush has a really crisp look… And can draw finer details easier

The oil paint flat brush I'd been using since 2022 ~ 2023 has a blunt edge and softer look

I think using a dark gray or dark screentone looks the best in this case. Both of Kuroha/Saeru's designs are really good (tfw a Konoha recolour is still peak)

I love the Manga design's cute hair tufts, black horns, black snake skin scales on his face, black/red darkened gradient limbs, and braids in the back that resembles a scorpion's tail like Judar's braids 🖤 ❤️ 🤭

Reminds me I had this KuroEne AU idea before:

Ngl it would be really fun if Ene in her tsundere denial tries to tell Kuroha/Saeru that she would not be doing this with him (being intimate with him) if it weren’t for the fact that he’s possessing Konoha’s body. Kuroha gets amused by the seeming challenging nature of her insinuation.

So then, Kuroha/Saeru uses Konoha’s Eye Ability, Awakening Eyes, and changes his body, appearance, and clothes, turning into his alternate form (Manga Route 2 Design) in front of Ene.

Ene counters him with how, even if he’s changed his appearance, he’s still using Konoha’s body.
