"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
Table 17
August 15, 2024 | Off-Broadway | MCC Theater | Evening | Play | Original | 1H 30M
Tumblr media
Only Kara Young can make such a heterosexual romance so intriguing. In this new play by Douglas Lyons, two people who had once been engaged are now meeting up at a restaurant to see if the spark is still there. We're taken through moments of their relationship in flashback segments, and it is messy as can be. Who deserves forgiveness and who shares blame? For me, I don't care about placing blame or finding redemption. Is it not enough that the characters are compelling and entertaining? The purity police would have a field day canceling this one over the "problematic" cheating scandal, but fuck it. It's wildly entertaining to bear witness to, and with the immersive staging that has audience members at tables around the center stage, it makes for some quality theatre. This was an early preview, so I noticed a lot of wrinkles with the transitions and backstage chatter that I'm sure will get ironed out. There's a hilarious side-character who provides ample comic relief, and the male protagonist is definitely compelling. But damn, Kara Young. I walked past her on the way out and she's not much taller than I am, but she has the presence of a stage giant. What are we doing to get her back on Broadway this season so she can get a fourth Tony nomination in a row?
Verdict: Why I Love the Theatre

"It's rotten work," Ren says. His tail swishes nervously. He has the demeanor of a sad scolded puppy even though no one's scolding him.
False looks up from where she's placing down mud blocks in accordance to the roads that Ren lined out. Ren's theatre kid behaviour must be kicking in now, because to call her work rotten is dramatic and almost insulting.
"It's not rotten to me. There's stuff I would call rotten work, but this is no where near it."
False places down another block. Ren obediently shuffles out of the way.
"Rotten work is when I'm at a tourney and no one's listening to my strategy so I'm left all alone, but then they use my strategy and we actually win while everyone ignores me. Rotten work is when someone sabotages me and I'm the one left to sweep away the pieces. Rotten work is when someone attacks me on purpose and I'm the one who has to apologise for being mad and pacify everyone else. This?" False pulls out another mud block, "is building. And building is not rotten work."
Ren cautiously observes what False is doing, then also pulls out his mud blocks. He moves a few steps forward so he's placing blocks, but out of her way. "It's still work," he admits. "A lot of work, in fact."
False is nonplussed. "But that's what builders do, don't they? And I am the Minister of Transport."
Ren laughs, but it's a quiet laugh. He pauses like he's hesitating, then he mumbles,
"I'm a lot of work."
Now it's False's turn to pause. Her hands continue with placing the blocks, because that's what she does. Building. Grinding. Helping friends out. So on and so forth.
"It's peculiar work for sure," False says, her tone light. "Picking up your stuff when you spontaneously explode. Bugging you about MCC. Teaching you basic colour theory. You can't get orange from blue, Ren. It sadly doesn't work that way."
Ren chuckles at the jab. "Worth a shot, eh?"
False coughs. "Yeah, like I said, peculiar work. But it's fine. I like doing peculiar work because I'm a peculiar person and you're a peculiar person. But together we are normal. Very normal indeed."
Ren considers it. "What if I don't want to be normal?"
"Then we won't be normal."
"What if I want to be normal?"
"Then we'll be normal. Or at least pretend to be."
Ren laughs. "That doesn't make any sense."
False smiles wryly. "Come on now, Ren, when have I ever made any sense?"
He shoots her a grin. "But you're like the most sensible person in the Neighbourhood!"
False lets the silence hang between them for comedic effect. "... No."
"No?"
"If I were sensible, I would've left the Neighourhood long ago."
"Hey!"
"Just kidding. That's why I'm not sensible. That's why I like not being sensible. Besides, I'm not the one who organised the ministry or planned the roads. You did. You're the one with the vision. I'm just following it."
Ren looks around the paths and his tail wags in excitement. "But you're contributing to the vision! I saw the bits and pieces you added! It looks great, by the way!"
False nonchalantly continues placing. "Yeah, you see, that's part of the peculiar work. You draw up the canvas and I edit in the details. It's like how we did the raceway last time."
"Yeah, but I haven't grinded as hard this time around. Too busy with my permit, my dude."
False giggles. "Would you call getting the beacon permit drawing a short straw?"
"I mean, I was the second to die in Demise, but you won and everything worked out in the end, so I don't mind." A pause. "Also gives me a chance to kill those dastardly withers as revenge for all the times they defeated me."
"Right, it's a lot of work to kill them, never mind farm them."
Ren sighs deeply. "There's definitely a lot going on. Especially those buttons, man."
False glances up. They're both still doing the roads. She watches Ren shift up a step and place down a mud brick slab.
"Yeah, but it'll be worth it. I'll buy your beacons. Actually, you can go do your buttons. You can kill some withers. I'll take care of this."
She can almost hear his apologies— sorry that she's doing the roads that he was supposed to do, sorry that he didn't reply to her messages, sorry that he's the way he is.
(And maybe he picks it up too— the way she actually means "I'll take care of you". He always seems to instinctively know what she means under her contradictory and confusing words. In the same way she instinctively knows what he means.)
Ren softly chuckles. "It's peculiar work."
"It's peculiar work especially if it's me, and especially if it's you—"
False sets down a mud brick slab right next to the one Ren placed. Just one slight push, and the pattern of the bricks align like they'd been inseparable from the get go. The corner of her lips quirk up.
"— but that's why I do it."

@janedoeweek day 1: your own jane doe :3
Tumblr media
ok this piece is like severely lacking an explanation so! info under the cut :3
this jane is mostly based on ashlyn maddox's (mcc*rter theatre's...) jane!! my fav jane ever tbh
she's revived as savannah dean (she/they)
(penny lamb is separate from savannah! maybe she's her past life, maybe she isn't, it's not really that important i think)
savannah (or ann, if savannah is too much of a mouthful) doesn't remember the events of rtc
but! she does get flashbacks of it at times,, familiar warehouses, names that are just on the tip of her tongue, that feeling of floating and falling....
savannah ends up dying in a road accident,,,
but! they get into another one of those revival games and that's when they start putting the pieces together
that's kind of what i wanted to portray in the art :3 in the story, the characters visit the scene of the accident, and the chaos is enough to recall a bit of the cyclone (does that count as a spoiler?? we haven't gotten to writing that part oops)
savannah's creation process was aided (carried really) by sam @thear0acespace!!! we + our other friends have a whole story planned for her,, being made slowly but surely,,, (yes this is a shameless promo go check out @beepbeepbeepjeep)
sam has his own art for today's prompt too GO CHECK IT OUT!!!!! it's a lot sillier bc savannah is silly :3
also plsplspls join jane doe week i think it's very cool

I love how basically each and every ride the cyclone production ships Jane with another character. Sometimes it’ll be SpaceDolls (Like McC*rter theatre) and other times it’s SugarDolls (Like Opera Wyoming). I just find it funny how almost each and every one of them just throws Jane into a “relationship” (most only hint at it or are platonic but still😤)
Tell me I’m wrong. I dare you.

Oooooh I love the acting treebark au, Martyn and Cleo being exes and frenemies yeeees. It would also be cool if each smp was a popular series in that universe, like hermitcraft and empires and (later in the au so that it makes sense chronologically) the life series as well. Grian, BigB, Pearl, Jimmy and Martyn first met each other as young actors while starring in Evo, which was very popular, and both BigB and Martyn kinda left acting for a while after that and pursued other interests (although they were still close to the others). Idk how to put Martyn´s years in fortnite in this au lol (some kind of sports thing?). Ren initially starred in lots of indie films and theatre productions, both acting and singing, and was so talented that caught the eye of the producers of Hermitcraft (probably the most popular series in tv). Lizzie and Etho have been absurdly famous actors for MANY years, like atp no one even rememebr when they first appeared in the sceen bc in feels like they were always famous. Grian is an actor but also really likes to direct and write (ehem life series). He invited lots of friends of his to his personal project, which becomes insanely popular for smth that started as a relatively small production. Mcc is a reality show with actors going thorugh physical/teamwork challenges, twitter keeps accusing the producers (Scott and the Noxcrew) of scripting it. The dmsp was a very popular series, the most famous at one point and full of interesting characters and cool moments, but it really fell of due to drama and bad writing.
YESSSSS I love MCC being a reality show I can't stop thinking about it now. It's like Wipeout. The cymbals do that shnnnng sound every time someone gets slighted.
Ren skyrocketing in popularity because of his role in Hermitcraft and when Life series comes around, he wants Martyn to act with him 😳 Grian took one look at the chemistry tests and was like OKAY you guys gay as hell. Get the cameras rolling PRONTO
Ren's personal assistant playing the love interest of Ren's character on 3L..... mwah mwah. Rehearsing in Ren's ludicrously expensive kitchen while Ren makes them a meal. Martyn staying over because it's more convenient. Completely blurring the lines of professionalism. <3 <3

Being an adult in this fandom is like: reblogging dnf brain rot while sitting in a teams meeting with the legal department, watching streams on the theatre projector in your apartment all evening, writing a think piece on dsmp characters and switching tabs to pay off your utilities quick, telling your parents you can’t come earlier for dinner bc you have plans, those plans being watching gnf mcc, hating dteam bc they have a nicer fridge than you, late night karlnetwork streams in the background while you work on your project that has a deadline of 9am the next morning, telling your boss you’re tired bc your dog kept you up all night but really it was dtkq+, foolish streams playing constantly while you work from home,

"Despite her beating out Jan Maxwell, my beloved, I feel no lingering bitterness because Jayne Houdyshell is one of those divine character actresses who elevates every project she's in. They released a little promo for it, and damn she looks good. Why is everyone going to the West End to do their shows? Do them here so I can see them, dammit. "Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
The Connector
March 10, 2024 | Off-Broadway | MCC | Evening | Musical | 1H 45M
Tumblr media
Got old-lady baited into seeing this show. The cast list told me there would be FOUR middle-aged women in this show. And you know what they got to do? Jack shit, that's what. One of them is the only voice of reason and god forbid a man listen to her. But otherwise, they're just kind of flitting in and out. One ensemble woman, who has maybe one line, is just off-stage "knitting" for half the show. Why?
The show itself is about a young hotshot journalist who falsifies his stories all while being practically canonized by his boys-club boss and readers. It's a new Jason Robert Brown musical, and I do like some of his work, but this one largely fails the narrative by not propelling it forward. The songs that set the scenes for his fake stories are engaging (if...so over-the-top they get satirical) , but the in-betweens sound too tonally similar with a strange syncopated sort of beat that has the singers sounding nice, but doesn't lend well to acting.
I will say, the final moment of the show, spoiler, is a delight. The entire set backdrop you see above is floor-to-ceiling magazine pages, and at the final button, they all come crashing down (revealing the orchestra as well), in a fluttering heap along the back of the stage. Blackout. It's pretty damn effective.
Verdict: Enjoyable, But Left No Lasting Impression
