hiccup

this is something i intended to continue but didn't, but with the way i left it, it seems complete enough to post. i had a whole story thought out in my head, a mafia-type au with the characters a little bit older than they are in real life; this was planned to be a section of it, occurring at some point in the story. i quickly wrote down what i had thought of so i didn't forget, and then i added onto it. and then i kind of didn't know what i wanted or how to lead up to it. this was written in april of 2021.

"Why does it matter?" he mumbles, and Seongjun swears that he looks precious in everything he does, but right now, he’s dying.

"What?"

"Whether I live or die. You've done your job. You killed the man who was after you." his eyes are open, trained on the leader, like black holes to get lost in. But Seongjun can tell he's exhausted, just holding on by a string that he's ready to let go of. "Why do I matter?"

Seongjun wants to smack him. He lowers himself more, lays next to the boy while Minjae is trying to stop the bleeding in his side. there's still a knife; he's wrapping a bandage around the wound now. It feels like a dream, calm yet chaotic. Seongjun caresses the side of Junhyuk's face gently with his hand, thumb brushing against his cheekbone. if junhyuk falls, Seongjun will catch him.

"You are worth so much more than you know."

Nothing is said between them after that. Seongjun's not sure if Junhyuk believes him, or if he’s even registered what he said, but he blinks slowly, staring with the most placid expression he's ever seen. Somehow, it calms the waves, washes away the anxiety. Minjae takes the knife out, and Junhyuk doesn't flinch. Now Seungmin is beside the medic, rushing to assist him.

Sounds grow hazy, voices mesh together. They echo in Junhyuk's brain, bouncing against the walls; he isn't sure where they're coming from, what's real or not. All he knows is that he's fading. He feels no more pain, though. He's forgotten that he's even supposed to be in pain. The light is too bright and the dark is too dark. His eyes hurt, and he's so tired. He's in the state of tranquility that he's always desired, somewhere within the lines of death and life. He doesn't know what side he's going to fall onto.

He thinks he wants to sleep eternally.

So Junhyuk falls, and Seongjun is there to catch him.

He'd never felt so heavy in his life.

When Junhyuk wakes up, his eyelids are weighed down with exhaustion, but he refuses to fall back into the comforting bliss of sleep. He pushes himself to the sitting position, the most difficult chore of his day. His muscles scream and his bones ache. The injury from last night comes back crashing. He can barely move without pain, but he does so anyway. Anxiety bubbles in his stomach when he takes a look around him.

He's not used to… resting… or, taking a break, or healing. Junhyuk doesn't even remember the last time he relaxed for once. He could never be allowed such luxury. 

But here he is now, and he relishes in it. He sighs; it's a deep flow of air that lets out everything that he's been holding in. Relief floats off in waves. He lays back down, letting the pillows and blankets swallow him however they please. It still hurts; he twists his body to make sure it hurts, because it's real. What happened last night was real.

The pain was definitely worth it.

Seongjun notices the blaze in Junhyuk's eyes the moment he sees him again, awake and coherent. Alive, buzzing with energy, desiring to move without being able to. He wants to get up, he says. He wants to move.

"Just a few more days." Seongjun tells him.

Surprisingly, Junhyuk listens. Minjae teases him, calls him a good boy when he quietly lets the bandages be checked. Said good boy rolls his eyes, because he knows that all of them are anything but. Huijun smiles fondly. Seungmin pinches his cheeks. Junhyuk is cutely annoyed. Seongjun just watches, as he always does, and always has.

Puzzle pieces fall into place. Junhyuk is the fifth member that they've been missing, each of them realize. he is exactly what they wanted. It feels as though he's been a part of them for years when it's only been a week.

The group plays games every Wednesday, watch movies every Friday, and Junhyuk's still sure it's all a dream. Maybe he did die from that stab wound and this is his heaven. He wouldn't exchange it for the world, no matter what.

seongjun- amusement park 

ok so it’s no surprise that seongjun loves roller coasters

literally anytime mcnd are in like a 20 mile radius of one 

bros bouncing off the walls

like genuinely so excited

so when you said you wanted to go to one

bro was there

ready to go

anyways when you two get to whatever amusement park you go to

he’s so excited

he seems like the type to hold your hand so that he doesn’t loose you </3

he’d def want to do everything with you

you gotta be careful tho

especially if you’re someone who zones out easily

bc if you look at something for too long

bro will either take you there or get it for you

like if you’re looking off to the side

but there’s cotton candy there

he won’t hesitate to go and buy you some

i also feel like hes the type to try and win something for you

like those silly carnival games where you have to get the rings around the bottles

or shoot at a target

he’s also said he’s very competitive 

so i can see him not leaving until he wins you something

but the look on your face when the worker hands you the stuffed animal makes it all worth it

as for the actual rides

seongjun has said he not afraid even the crazy ones

so as long as your comfortable with it, you two would ride basically any ride there

on the crazy scary ones he would hold your hand as you’re death gripping the cart scared for your life

bro would probs giggle at you too

he would also drag you onto the little kid rides

giggling as the two of you just have fun

when you two leave it’s pretty late

seongjun would refuse to let you carry your stuff as well

if one of you two drove you guys, he would offer to drive so that you could rest

but if you two were driven or took a bus

he would sit next to you 

and let you rest your head on his shoulder

seungmin - going to a zoo

so like stick with me right

i feel like seungmin and you

would have the best day at the zoo

like seungmin would def grab one of those maps they give you at the entrance

even though you say you two don’t need it

and so you two are off

walking from animal to animal

i feel like seungmin would imitate them for you

just to see you laugh

bc he loves your laugh so much

he would also buy one of those stuff animals at the gift shop for you

he wanted to get you something cool

so when you told him you wanted a raccoon he was like 

“you fr?”

but when you told him you wanted a raccoon bc it reminded you of him 

and it would be a way to remember him when he’s on tour

bro was ready to buy every raccoon plushy the store had

as you two continue on with your day

you walk into the aquarium area

and yk that look that seungmin gets in his eyes

where his eyes are like sparkling

he gets like that looking at the fish

and you watch as his head follows one fish

only to start following another when he sees a prettier one

and when a shark comes up he grabs your hand

not because he’s scared

obviously why would he be scared 

but because he’s worried your scared

but once you leave the zoo, you two are still holding hands </3

minjae - skate parks

ok so hear me out

idk where i got this idea

but i’m obsessed 

just imagine right

minjaes been wanting to take you skateboarding with him

but you’ve never learned (if you can actually skate board i’m jealous)

anyways

so one day you’re just minding your business 

just chilling in your house/apartment

when all of a sudden

there’s aggressive banging on your door

convinced someone’s trying to break in and rob you, you debate going to the door

but when you look through the little peephole

it’s just minjae

so you open up the door and ask him tf he was doing

and minjae has the audacity

the absolute audacity to just giggle

you eventually ask him if he wants to come in

but bros like “nah you’re coming with me”

and because it’s minjae and you trust him you don’t ask questions

big mistake

the two of you end up at the skate park

and he’s all “suprise”

at first you tell him you’ll just watch him

but eventually he asks you if you want to go

and so now you have to tell him you don’t know how to skateboard

bro doesn’t even care tbh

he’s just starts teaching you

like just imagine him helping you

by like holding your waist so that you don’t fall off

eventually you think you get the hang of it

so minjae let’s you go 

and you’re doing great

until you run into a rock

and fully face plant onto the cement

minjae rushes over to you

acting like you just got hit by a car

even though you’re fine and just barely skinned your elbow and knees

but minjae doesn’t care about the severity

he carries you all the way back to either your place or his

depending on which is closer

despite you’re protests saying your fine

once you get back he’d set you down before helping you with your wounds

he’d be so gentle, like he’s afraid he might break you

even though it’s literally stopped bleeding at this point

once he’s done he’d make you and him something to eat

don’t offer helping because he’ll say no since you’re “injured”

once hes done cooking, you two would enjoy each others company 

watching whichever anime hes currently on

huijun - bike rides and park dates

stop ok this would be so cute

like imagine huijun coming to pick you up

and he’s got like that cute little smile 

yk the one where he’s like ᵔ ▿ ᵔ

and like he has flowers for you

and you made a cute little picnic

NO WAIT

you guys made it together yesterday

omg like those aesthetic whipped cream sandwiches and cute little desserts and some fun fruit

and everything’s cut like flowers or hearts

and while you’re making it huijun

mr “pro chef”

gets bored and starts a mini food fight

it starts with him putting a little bit of whipped cream on your nose

and when you look at him like 

“what just happened”

he can’t help but laugh at how cute you are

and so that starts a food fight

flour, whipped cream, and other ingredients are everywhere in the kitchen

you and huijun both covered in flour

but it’s ok

bc you two had fun

anyways back to the main point

so huijun stops by your house

and since it’s such a beautiful day outside instead of driving

you two take your bikes

it’s only a few miles away

he always made sure he was biking on the side closest to the cars

and to keep right next to you

so that way he could talk with you

and just make sure you’re ok

and when you get there you two lay down a blanket under a tree

and just eat, talk a little, be cute

he’s definitely the type to prefer to listen then talk

i also feel like he’d def tease you

maybe make you do aegyo for a strawberry

or tickle you when you took the last macaron 

stop you two are too cute 

and then after eating because it was so filling

you two decide to take a nap

and it’s just so peaceful and calm and cute

omg i love you two

junhyuk - late night convenience store runs

this is the exact opposite of huijun

instead of the cute calm date

bros causing havoc at 1 am on the way to the convenience store

it all started bc you went over to his place to play some video games

you were only supposed to be there until 9

and at 11 you said one more round and then im going home

but yet there you were at 1 am

wearing one of his hoodies to be more comfy

the only light coming from the screen infront of you two 

it was also deadly quiet as the rest of the boys went to sleep

telling the two of you that you better not be up extremely late

after the round finished junhyuk got up and walked into the kitchen

you heard a dramatic sigh from him as he realized they didn’t have any good snacks

so junhyuk being ever the gentleman 

is now dragging you down the street to the nearest 24 hour convenience store

junhyuks holding your hand, rambling about anything and everything

from the last show he watched, to a cat that just ran by to the song he’s working on

you’re just listening

a little too tired to fully process what he’s saying

when you get to the store he passes you a basket and starts stalking up

grabbing anything that catches his eye

he even grabbed some things he knew you would like 

bc he loves you <33

walking home, junhyuk refused to let you carry anything

and when you protest he says

“fine you can carry this”

and gives you his hand

right before you make it back

junhyuk stops dead in his tracks

staring into the darkness before asking you

well more like telling

that there’s a playground and the two of you are going

and so you and junhyuk spend a few minutes at the playground before heading back and falling asleep

completely forgetting about all of the snacks you just spent the last hour going to get

Etienne’s Top Fives of 2022: Kpop Edition - Boy Groups

We’re on to Boy Groups as I continue down my list from the roundup post. This has in some ways been the hardest category to narrow down, specifically the order of 2nd-4th and who got the 5th spot (there’s a reason I’ve got 2 honorable mentions).

If a boy group has had subunits or members doing things solo, I consider that part of the group’s body of work for the year as long as they’ve also done some full group stuff. If only a subunit has been active, they’d probably get considered a boy group for the sake of this, and if only solos have been active, then they’d go in with solos.

There were so many boy groups that did at least something that I enjoyed this year, including some that I hadn’t enjoyed anything from up until now. I think that part of the reason decisions this year were hard was that this was just an outstanding year for releases overall. Here’s a list of groups with songs that stood out for me this year in about the order that I heard them that didn’t make the list below: Up10tion (“Crazy About You” / "What If Love"), Onewe (“Universe” / "Montage" / "Still Here"), Drippin (“Villain” / “Zero” / “The One”), AB6IX (“1, 2, 3”), BtoB (“The Song”), Nu’est (“Again” disbandment song), Kingdom (“Ascension”), Ghost9 (“X-ray”), Just B (“Re=Load”), TXT (“Good Boy Gone Bad”), MCND (“W.A.I.1” < first time I’ve liked one of their songs), Vanner ("Rollin"), E’last (“Creature"), Omega X (“Play Dumb” < first song I’ve liked by them), TheBoyz (“Sweet” / “Timeless” / “Whisper”), Golden Child (“Replay”), Epex (“Hymn to Love”), P1harmony (“Doom Du Doom” < first song I’ve liked by them), and CIX (“458”).

Honorable Mention: Stray Kids

If you’d asked me a few months ago, Stray Kids probably would have been making my top 5 hands down. I saw them live and they were amazing! They did a lot that I liked early in the year musically. I... didn’t like Maxident and especially the MV for “Case 143″ at all though (there’s... one song I thought was OK on the album), and it probably impacted their place here. I still love them! They’re among my top groups, but I was reminded that their music is hit and miss for me. It is good going back and listening to “Maniac” and remembering that I do love a lot of their music. I really wish that Maxident hadn’t felt so rushed for me because it definitely dampened my appreciation of their overall body of work for the year. They are incredible live though! And I appreciate that I’ve gained friends both on here and in real life over them.

Honorable Mention: Ateez

Ateez came into this year for me riding the high of “Turbulence” that is probably to date my favorite of their songs, and I had high expectations. Their music so far this year has been interesting, but noting has quite caught me the way some of last years releases did. They were in very tight contention for making it into the 5th place, thus why I have these honorable mentions. I am very interested to see where they take their music and storylines next, and “Halazia” (linked above) was probably my favorite thing that they did this calendar year, it’s definitely an interesting sound and it may honestly grow on me further with more listens.

Biases: Seonghwa, Yeosang

5) Cravity

This has been a killer year for Cravity! I loved “Adrenaline” and enjoyed “Vivid” earlier in the year. They had a song all in English that I liked with “Boogie Woogie” (a rarity for me, often understanding lyrics impedes me ability to enjoy songs that I like auditorily). “Party Rock” (above) was definitely my favorite of their releases this year! It gets stuck in my head, it’s so catchy. I definitely replayed it a ton right after it came out too! Cravity has flirted with being on these lists since debut, but I think that the last time they made it on one was their rookie year (granted, they’ve not been around that long). I think that they’ve finally started to hit their stride, and I’m really hoping for more of them embracing this sound!

4) Oneus

I’ve liked them since debut to some extent, and I’d properly fallen for Oneus as a group with “Luna” last year, but “Same Scent” and the entire Malus album was kind of what tipped them over from a group that I loved to one of my top groups. I had Malus on repeat for weeks. They’ve had a rough go of the past few months (don’t really feel like talking about this, I do have opinions, but it’s not a conversation I’m interested in having at this time), but they’ve had amazing performances since then. And I thought that they couldn’t make “Same Scent” better than it already is, and then they just recently released the traditional version (https://youtu.be/pIVfLX8zW00 warning has flashing lights), and it somehow makes the song even better. I love how they use traditional instrumentation and sound in their songs somewhat regularly!

Biases: Seoho, Leedo, Hwanwoong (I am aware that’s over half the group, no I will not narrow it down)

3) OnlyOneOf

I’m breaking my own pattern a little bit by putting “ズルい女“ (their Japanese MV) as the representative song, but it was my favorite of their full group pieces this year, and I think that it shows their choreo and how they make music, even covers, their own really beautifully. The real thing that put’s OnlyOneOf this high on the list is their body of queer work with the member solos this year in the “be” / “undergrOund idOl” series. “skinz” was important to me conceptually, but it’s one of my least favorite OnlyOneOf songs, and I feel like “ズルい女“ is more interesting to me than “Suit Dance.” I like their songs as a body of work immensely in general though! For the biggest reason that I put them on here, see the “be” series:

They are exquisite storytellers in their MVs, and they have committed to telling compelling queer stories. They have incredible cinematic references throughout their MVs, and I just can’t praise their work enough as a whole! I have made so many posts about their storytelling and queer elements in their work, if you want to see more of my thoughts on them, just go digging through my OnlyOneOf tag.

2) Enhypen

It’s funny to me looking back that Enhypen didn’t make it onto these lists earlier. I was aware of them, and knew that I had some connections to them that made them appealing to me. (The one that I talk about more is that I watched Sunghoon and followed his career as a figure skater, I think that he actually made onto one of my figure skating lists when he was in juniors. There’s another one that’s more important, but that I don’t talk about as publicly.) I love the sound that Enhypen’s been living in recently, but they’ve overall had a sound that I’ve enjoyed from the start. I am very excited to see how they keep developing in the future! While I linked “Blessed-Cursed” above as my representative song for them (I’ve been going back to it consistently since it came out in January, it well deserves the spot), I want to also emphasize how much I loved “One In A Billion” (https://youtu.be/_ATqY9GFRh0) and “I Need the Light” (https://youtu.be/Pfq37N3eA7g) both of which are (at least kind of) OSTs.

1) Seventeen

Seventeen have been my favorite boy group since they debuted, and they show no signs of stopping that trend any time soon. I’ve loved their releases this year, among them another solo from Junhui with “Limbo” (https://youtu.be/k0sKWlEhVRk) which was a change from his usual emotional ballad fare, but let him show off his dancing and make an MV that was just incredibly gender. I also have a new favorite Seventeen song, dethroning “Home” in it’s long rein, with “Shadow.” I got to see them live this summer, and Redeim only partially managed to capture me losing my mind over them performing “Shadow” live. Their albums this year have been spectacular, and as always, I cannot wait to see what they decide to do next. I hope that I get to see them live many more times in the future (and if you get the chance to do it, they’re an experience).

I would love to chat about any of the groups on this list! I had such a hard time narrowing this down to 5 this year, and it probably would have been easier to do a top 10. There was so much good music this year!

and with how clingy he is he’d probs be holding onto you as if you we’re about to disappear

i don’t think it really matters to him if you’re facing him or not

just as long as he can hold you and bury his head into your neck he would be happy

so safe to say cuddling him is whatever you two decide

some nights its spooning

other nights it’s just holding hands

some nights he full on starfishing it while you’re milimeters away from falling off the bed

minjae would definitely want to hold you

i feel like he’d also want you to look at him

it wouldn’t be awkward tho 

i feel like he’d also like playing with your hair right before falling asleep

in the morning i feel like the two of you would wake up with your legs tangled 

(idk how that works but i can just see it)

huijun

idk how accurate what i found was, but huijun sleeps like a brick

like he doesn’t move 

idk if he even breathes

when it comes to cuddling i feel like he’d just lay on his back and let you cuddle into him

probably would wrap his arm around you while you cuddle into his chest

if you’re the time to move around a lot in your sleep no worries

once huijun has you in his arms you’re glued to that spot until the next morning

i feel like he’d want to be the big spoon 86% of the time bc he wants to feel “manly”

but every once in awhile would appreciate you spooning him.
