Businesses Hit By Remote Working Breaches

A new report by Internet security company Malwarebytes has found that since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, one in five organizations has experienced a security breach related to remote workers. Despite this, a separate survey found that 90% of CEOs believe remote work will become a permanent feature within their organizations. Malwarebytes emphasized the importance of addressing the risks posed by remote work and ensuring that employees are trained in cybersecurity best practices. The report, based on a survey of more than 200 IT and cybersecurity managers and executives in the US, found that 24% of organizations had to pay unexpected expenses to deal with a cybersecurity breach or malware attack following lockdown.
Furthermore, 18% of respondents admitted that cybersecurity was not a priority for their employees, while 5% stated that their employees posed a real security risk by being oblivious to security best practices. The report found that although 70% of organizations moved at least 61% of their workforce to a remote work model due to the pandemic, many businesses were less prepared for the transition than they thought. Malwarebytes director Adam Kujawa referred to this as “security hubris,” where confidence in security tools does not match the tools’ protective capabilities.
The report highlights that even where employers provided laptops or phones, over a quarter of respondents admitted to using personal devices for work-related activities more than their work device, which increases the challenge of ensuring data security.
The report suggests that businesses should have a device usage policy covering acceptable usage, minimum hardware and software specifications, and mobile device management (MDM) software. The report also found that 61% of businesses issued devices to their staff for remote working, but 65% did not deploy an updated antivirus solution for those devices, and in 61% of cases, businesses did not urge employees to use antivirus on personal devices used for work purposes.
The report also highlighted the importance of performing security and online privacy analyses of software tools before implementing them within organizations, which 45% of organizations did not do during the rushed transition to remote work. The report found that in 44% of organizations, employees were not provided with security training that focused on the specific threats related to remote work. Cybercriminals have taken advantage of the security gaps related to remote work, including improperly secured VPNs, cloud-based services, and business email, and have used phishing emails containing malware available to buy over the Dark Web, such as AveMaria and NetWiredRC, to launch cyberattacks. The report emphasizes the importance of securing organizations’ networks as remote work is here to stay
