Soooo mate is an umbrella term. It can mean a claimed mate, which think of claims as being drawn to multiple people BUT falling in love with one and actually choosing to be with them. Like for example, Vi could be drawn to Sevika and Cait but in the end, falls in love with Cait and decides to commit and be marked by her. (Very much like a normal relationship, except scenting is a thing) Marks via claims have to be redone like, once a yr or smth I'm making this up as I go okay.

Mate can be a bonded one too, which you can see as a more extreme version of a claim. It can only happen via alpha and omega and is much more reminiscent of the standard soulmate trope. For R, maybe one other person in their lifetime could draw them in like Sevika, and if bitten by Sevika, it would take yrs for the mark to fade. Hence why they're basically considered soulmates.

Not all alpha and omega mates are necessarily bonds though.

As for how Sevika knew. Think of R's pov. She smells Sev and immediately likes the scent, wants to be near it and everything even though she's traumatized to hell and back.
