As industries continue to expand and innovate, the demand for skilled mechanical drafters remains high. For those aspiring to pursue a career in this dynamic field, understanding the essential steps and considerations is paramount. In this blog, we'll delve into the ultimate career path to become a mechanical drafter in 2024.
Understanding the Role of a Mechanical Drafter
Before embarking on the journey, it's vital to comprehend the role of a mechanical drafter. Mechanical drafters play a pivotal role in the design and development of mechanical systems, machinery, and products. They translate ideas from engineers and designers into technical drawings and plans that guide the manufacturing process. Precision, attention to detail, and proficiency in CAD software are essential attributes for success in this role.
Step 1: Education and Training
The foundation of a career in mechanical drafting begins with acquiring the necessary education and training. While a high school diploma is typically the minimum requirement, pursuing post-secondary education, such as an associate degree or certificate program in drafting or mechanical engineering technology, can provide a competitive edge.
These programs offer coursework in technical drawing, CAD software, mathematics, and engineering principles. Additionally, obtaining certifications from reputable organizations, such as the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) or Autodesk, can further enhance your credentials and marketability in the field.
Step 2: Develop Technical Skills
Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software is a cornerstone of mechanical drafting. Learn how to use industry-standard programs like CATIA, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD. These tools enable drafters to create precise and detailed technical drawings, 3D models, and schematics.
Furthermore, honing your skills in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), materials selection, and mechanical systems will enhance your effectiveness as a mechanical drafter. Stay updated on the latest advancements in CAD technology and industry practices to remain competitive in the job market.
Step 3: Gain Practical Experience

Further Devlog update
Wrath is completely patched up, extra variables added, rewritten for clarity, and should theoretically work without any bugs. It includes a meeting for Alia, Lamenta, and some other side characters.
Next on the fixing list is Acceptance, which is mostly alright, just gap-filling which shouldn't take too long. That one introduces Alia, Jin Liang, and more side characters.
Due to rewrites and clarity of plot, Neutral actually had to get a rewrite and character change, so that's the new problem child. That's mostly just the Prologue bit, however, as the intro to Akio is still A-OK and I want to add Jin Liang intro to that before saying Neutral is done.
Looking like 100% W, 75% A, and 20% N about now.

one of these days im going to release my tlm drafting headcanons from my notes app purgatory and that day is Today.
HERE'S HOW I THINK LEGO MOVIE CHARACTERS WOULD PREPARE AND MAKE DRAFTS
...under the cut
Batman
• Fairly good at drawing. Somehow able to draw straight lines without a ruler perfectly fine every single time but otherwise nothing super noteworthy (he does brag about this constantly however)
• Drafts in white and yellow posca pen??? will use white colored pencil for finer detail however, specifically one of those mechanical colored pencils
• Drafts on black paper because he thinks it makes his designs cooler (it doesn't)
• Dimensions in imperial and would be annoyed if you dare even *insinuate* he use metric. no justification here
• Doodles around his drafts, specifically likes to doodle bats and himself because he, once again, thanks it makes his drafts cooler (the bats kinda do)
• Refuses to leave notes on his designs. you either know what to do or you don't
• Does however write his drawing title obnoxiously large
• Used autocad for like a day, hated it, switched to solidworks and never went back
• Buys autodesk licenses for the rest of the masterbuilders. unwillingly, mind you, wyldstyle just knows his credit card information and abuses it
Benny
• Good at drawing exclusively spaceships. big shock i know
• The king of eyeballing a line or an angle and then labelling it however the fuck he wants. proper measurements take time he could spend drafting or making more spaceships, he'll save measuring and straightedges for drafts he deems important enough
• Uses blueprinting paper. there's no practical purpose for this, he just digs it
• Drafts with whatever writing utensil is on hand
• He gets inspired quite often so he usually keeps a drafting notepad on him just in case
• Leaves a *lot* of notes. Most of them are completely unnecessary and are a funny contrast to his haphazard dimensioning
• Pretty dang good at autocad! Usually reserves it for projects that require a lot more collaboration however
• Usually drafts in metric, can dimension in imperial but prefers not to
• 100% sets autocad to the light background like a monster
• Do not give him any 3d modelling software, he might blow up the computer
Emmet
• Either really good or really bad at drawings (obvs leaning towards bad. we remember the break in plans)
• Dimensions in imperial. I cant justify this one he just does. god bless america or something idk
• Owns a couple drafting pencils but rarely uses them, most of the time he drafts in marker or pen much to the chagrin of anyone who needs to read his drafts (or delight if you're unikitty)
• Started learning how to use autocad after taco tuesday and he's actually pretty good at it! he does use an architectural dimstyle for everything though which is particularly annoying when he's quite often not drafting buildings now
• Has labelled and colored layers 👍 enough said
• Uses disgustingly thick lineweights. horrible.
• Rarely if ever 3d models so he's not good at it, he mostly works on things that 2d conveys better anyways
• Although he's not the best drafter of the master builders, his construction background makes him the best at reading drafts, give him a unikitty draft and he can decipher it like it's nothing
Metalbeard
• Probably the best at drafting of the master builders, he's got the age advantage and lots of practice from making ships
• Drafts in pencil, quill, or charcoal depending
• Who needs straightedges or angle stencils when youre basically a pirate cyborg, expect robot like precision
• Doesn't use standard measuring conventions, instead opts to use the dumbest things possible. The Sea cow's units of measurement were seagulls. It isnt that he cant do normal units of measurement, he just prefers his made up ones
• Makes his drafting paper by himself
• Pretty good with 2d and 3d modelling surprisingly. He doesn't like either, however, he much prefers drafting on paper
• Leaves an average amount of notes on his drafts but has the most disgustingly fancy cursive and writes in his piratey english. Often a nightmare to read if you aren't used to his writing
• Will sometimes do blueprint swaps with Benny wherein they critique each other's work. not sure when they started doing it, but it's become a weekly activity for them
Unikitty
• Worst drafter of the main masterbuilder crew. Most people think it's because she's a cat but no she just doesnt take drafting seriously in the slightest
• Drafts like she's making an arts and crafts project. She has put several bottles of glitter on singular drafts and she will do it again
• Dimensions in rainbows, no knows what this means other than emmet
• Gives the longest, most complicated titles possible
• No such thing as straight lines
• Is entirely capable of drafting properly, just refuses to
• Leaves notes that are entirely unrelated to the draft. she wont tell you how youre supposed to connect two objects but she *will* tell you about the sandwich she ate while making the draft
• Doesnt use autocad, looks too boring
• Didnt use any 3d modelling softwares until she realized you can change the appearance of materials. that was a game changer. still much prefers drafting on paper though
• Likes drafting with emmet sometimes since he seems to be the only person who understands her drawings. to this day no one understands how he does it
Vitruvius
• Going blind has, surprisingly, not made him much worse at drafting, just changed his process a bit
• Drafts in pencil
• Probably the person who least frequently drafts of the main masterbuilders. On account of just not needing to and also on account of being dead
• Dimensions in the old anglo-saxon units of measurement
• Doesn't title his drafts and doesnt see a point in doing so
• Leaves the most vague, utterly confusing notes on his drawings. theyre still related to the drawings unlike unikitty's notes, but theyre very odd
• Doesn't use autocad or 3d modelling softwares, partially because he wouldnt really be able to on account of being blind but also partially because he doesn't really know what they are
• There isnt really much to say about his drafting skills he's about as normal of a drafter as a masterbuilder can be
Wyldstyle
• An engineering teacher's dream student. She may not have the amount of experience metalbeard has but she's still very skilled
• Doesn't like drafting on paper and won't if she doesn't have to
• When she does draft on paper she uses a drafting mechanical pencils. she also 100% collects them
• dimensions in metric to exactly 3 decimal places
• leaves very few if any notes (always very concise ones if included)
• has a case of staedtler stencils that she bought 4 years ago and never uses
• picked up a habit of doodling on drafts from batman but will never admit she got the habit from him
• Autocad PRO. Also really damn good at solidworks and fusion. Give this girl a computer and she'll give you a motorcycle assembly within the hour
• Specializes in automotives
• Spends time with Emmet on the weekends teaching him how to use digital drafting softwares (this process was incredibly frusturating at first but gets easier with time)

Mark, can I provide some (a bit critical) constructive feedback about Read-ahead?
I recently cut all Read Ahead sagas from my cube.
While I love the idea and was excited to include some of the cards in my environment, the execution of the mechanic proved to be lacking.
The fact that the reminder text for read-ahead was the only thing that signified this rather huge difference between these sagas and traditional ones, as well as the fact that the reminder text for Read-ahead was placed right where the reminder text for what Sagas are is on other sagas (with most players just skipping that part completely) made it a huge problem – even after I cut all non-read-ahead sagas from my cube!
My drafters would frequently forget about Read-ahead and make suboptimal plays – even experienced players who were familiar with the cards would do that. The final nail in the coffin was when one of my drafters who goes to championships and whatnot Thoughtseized me, saw Founding the Third Path in my hand, and took something else because he forgot I can drop it with 3 counters and Bolt his face.
I guess the mechanic needed some sort of a visual reminder alongside the reminder text, something to distinguish these sagas from regular ones, much like DFC have a little symbol that signifies they are double faced. The play patterns are far too different for the frames of these sagas to be treated as regular sagas.
Have you had a similar assessment over at WotC?
Here's the problem. Players like when we find new tweaks to old game elements. We do it all the time. If we added a visual component each time we did it, it would start to make the frames feel more cluttered, and could possibly cause confusion over time (as we get enough of them), so we're careful about when to add new visual elements. We do it, but we're cautious.
Read ahead Sagas didn't cross the line for us. If you read them wrong, you just play sub-optimally, you're not doing something the card can't do. For example, it wouldn't cause a game loss in a competitive tournament. Maybe we were wrong. How do others feel about this topic?

Do You Want Invincible Ink Stuff For Decemberween?
Decemberween is coming! Decembeween is oh so near! Decemberween is for giving! Decemberween is almost here! Decemberween, Decemberween, it’s fifty-five days after Halloween!
If you are at all interested in Stuff I’ve Made as products for presents for people in the coming months, I’d like to make this my official opportunity to tell you to go check them out now. It’s November, it’s near the end, if you’re in the Mainland USA or Canada (which my metrics indicate you are), and if you want something to arrive for you over there in order to give it to someone as a gift, now is a good time to set aside some coins and check out the stores for our stuff!
Here, let me show you the kinds of things I make that you may want to spend some money on!
First of all, there’s a bunch of stuff on my most successful store, the Redbubble Store! This is a place where you can buy stickers of the different designs I’ve done, which includes these delightful ones:
And my shirts, which includes these designs that have been popular this year. Well, people have bought them this year. The point is, these are shirt designs I made, and these two designs represent designs people have bought as shirts, and not just as a stickers. I particularly want to shout out the buyer in Germany who bought a Thule Things Infant Onesie.
But hey, you might think ‘Talen? that guy makes games, why is he mentioning t-shirts as his most successful store?’ Well, you can get games too!
Almost all of my games are available at DriveThruCards as print-on-demand. This is a great way for you to grab them, they’re fast and they’re delivered in sometimes as little as a week. I like them a lot, I think they’ll meet your needs really easily again, if you’re in the mainland USA, you can buy them and they’ll arrive in a quick enough time!
If you’re looking for a game in my portfolio to check out, I want to recommend some games that I think hit a certain kind of interest:
Fabricators is a dense, replayable economy game like San Juan, but built out of a single deck of cards, and with a thematic space that doesn’t represent its economy structures as being about Just More Colonial Capitalism.
Good Cop, Bear Cop, is a hidden identity secret role game where players don’t have to talk to each other directly and deal with the ensuing anxiety. It’s meant to be faster and less pure than the games like it, so that players have more room to let the game choices communicate for them.
Dark Signs is a horror-themed strategy game which I’m still incredibly happy with! It’s a strategy game, it works across multiple rounds, and the theme and aesthetic hold together in a way I really like. It’s one of my oldest games now and it’s one I still think is one of the best.
Hook, Line & Sinker, is another small bluffing game about con artists improvising an optimal plan before the snitch in the party outs them all, it’s cheap, and it plays really quick. If your play group wants things to do while other players are rounding out larger, slower games, grab a copy and jam it in the collection!
Dog Bear is a single book, fast-start RPG that I promote as a way to get people into roleplaying games without any challenges making characters. It’s meant to give you the tools you need to tell a short story about Metal Gear Solid style characters completing a mission, told in flashback.
Our most successful and beloved game, LFG: Looking For Group is a simple drafter where you’re trying to build a team of adventurers to go on a quest, and they all beat each other up on the way out the door.
Sector 86 is a big deck, single deck game where you build your own space station, with a push-your-luck mechanism. It’s a game with a lot of dedicated work in building out the flavour and giving players things to do in the course of their day, with a really simple set of mechanisms for playing the game.
Finally, if you like the microgames like Hook, Like & Sinker, you should check out some of our other microgames, like Cat & The Mouse (a two player stealth game), Senpai Notice Me! (a multiplayer trading game about girls kissing girls), The Botch (a game about ruinously complex failed heists and bluffing your way through it), and You Can’t Win (a simple negotiator game about trying to win tricks in a way that mean you can win the last trick).
But if you’re not in the mainland USA, these shipping rates can get pretty hard and you might not be able to afford them. But if you still want some Invincible Ink games, and if you like craft projects, I’d like to recommend you check out our line of games, for the Print and Play options. These are all priced to be compared to numbers we find funny, like the value of a Tumblr Verified Stamp.
If you’re at all interested in making Print-And-Play versions of these games, you’re going to want access to some printable sticker paper and some cardboard. The cardboard can be anything, like a cereal box, if that’s your jam, and then you apply them together. It’s something that you can do a really nice job of if you take some time to do it.
I really recommend checking out print-and-play games as a sort of craft project. They take you away from the keyboard and screen, and when you’re done, you have something you can play with. There are ways to do fancy edging and corners on your cards with little hand tools like a cheap, ~$12 corner cutter kinda device. Consider that the bigger games can be around 120 cards, which can be a lot of time to make. Don’t feel you need to rush!
Anyway, this is hopefully useful advice for you if you’re interested in the kinds of things I make and think ‘Oh I should do that as a present for someone.’ This is a reminder that now is probably the best time to do that!
If you’re just thinking about giving me money for the media I make on the internet, and you don’t want any of these things specifically, then my Patreon exists and has been running on a consistent rule of not paywalling anything.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

A Note On... Drafting Cards in the Dungeon
Tumblr media
Dungeon Drafters is a roguelite deckbuilding game by Manalith Studios! Explore the dungeons, grab boosters, and defeat bosses!
Let me say this outright, the game is absolutely gorgeous. Very, very pretty. Plus the option to change the palette to be absolutely blinding is actually great (and funny) if your eyes can handle it and it's a fun little nostalgic tidbit.
One cool point I found out is that the character you choose at the beginning is pretty much cosmetic since you can equipment any deck loadout, but you unfortunately can't change it later on which is a small loss.
The mechanics themselves remind me of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (without the 8-directional movement), Into the Breach, and [Slay the Spire] all mixed together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So another little disclaimer that while I'm writing this, I've obviously not experienced everything this game has to offer. I've only ever used the starting cards for the red-haired magic girl, as well as other raider cards and the traveller cards.
And I learned from a handful of runs that both movement and *card synergy* is wildly important to have a successful run. Traveller cards are good in both since they offer a lot of extra moves and movement abilities and that pairs well with the raider's attack cards.
The issue is that some builds are going to be way stronger than others and a handful won't even be viable. And because the dungeons of the game are so long, it becomes a real challenge to be able to survive 4+ floors to beat the game, especially since there's no way to empower yourself during the run. What you have is what you get, so to say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which, in my opinion, is both good and bad. Good in the sense that challenge is good. It forces you to strategize in both preparation and execution. The right synergies and the right in-combat decisions to help you succeed. Bad in the sense it becomes incredibly hard to actually finish the game (part of why I'm writing the review before I do finish my time the game). And honestly, many roguelites suffer from that problem anyways (where runs are too long compared to your ability to get stronger).
I'm not quite done with my time in the game. At some point I wanna try a turtling/healing build as well as a build where you get a ton of minions/summons. I also want to *attempt* to do the last dungeon, but I have high doubts I'll be able to actually complete it.
Dungeon Drafters is a really cool mix of dungeon exploration and deck building. Totally recommend for those who love both.
As always,
Enjoy gaming!

If sell chippy early, make biiiiiig money. That's all it is. All this rush is primarily driven by the trend of chips to depreciate quickly after release. Nobody wants to be late to the party. That's the main factor. Innovation is kind of an afterthought.
I think our customers are panicking. They might be very late, but the pressure is on us. Mechanical parts for every new unit for this project will be pushed through one drafter (hello), and I know a potential bottleneck when I see one.
If I carry this or if I crash, either way will be interesting.

what would be your dream job? What’s your favorite part of Halloween? Do you prefer hot drinks or cold drinks?
I have so many "dream jobs" it's hard to pick just one, but today I think I would love to be an architectural drafter. I'm not visually creative enough to be an architect, but I think it would be so cool to get into the weeds of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design of a building.
Favorite part of Halloween is that my birthday is three days later!
I definitely prefer hot drinks. I was just waxing poetic today about homemade hot chocolate with amaretto and real whipped cream. Mmmmmm.
Cold drinks hurt my teeth.

Mechanical Drawings - Digital Suntech
Mechanical drawing, also known as technical drawing or engineering drawing, is a form of communication used by engineers, architects, and other professionals to convey the details of a design. It is a precise and standardized way of representing objects and their relationships in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional space. Here are some key aspects of mechanical drawing:
Orthographic Projection:
Mechanical drawings typically use orthographic projection, where a three-dimensional object is represented by two-dimensional views from different angles. Common views include front, top, side, and isometric views.
Line Types:
Different line types are used to represent various features. For example, solid lines may represent visible edges, while dashed lines may represent hidden or invisible edges.
Dimensioning:
Dimensions are essential in mechanical drawings to provide accurate information about the size and location of features. Dimensions are typically expressed in terms of length, width, and height.
Scale:
Drawings are often created to scale, meaning that the size of the drawing reflects a proportional reduction or enlargement of the actual object. Common scales include 1:1, 1:2, 1:5, etc.
Symbols and Notations:
Symbols and notations are used to represent specific features or materials. Examples include welding symbols, surface finish symbols, and material specifications.
Title Block:
A title block is usually included in the drawing, providing information such as the title, drawing number, date, scale, and the name of the drafter or designer.
Isometric Drawings:
In addition to orthographic projections, isometric drawings may be used to represent three-dimensional objects in a more realistic way.
CAD (Computer-Aided Design):
Many mechanical drawings are now created using computer-aided design (CAD) software, which allows for more precise and efficient drafting.
Tolerances:
Tolerance information is often included to specify the acceptable variations in dimensions.
Revision History:
Drawings may include a revision history to track changes and updates made to the design over time. Creating accurate and detailed mechanical drawings is crucial for manufacturing, construction, and other industries where precise specifications are essential for the fabrication of products or structures.

tonight’s tangent: if george’s mom was a college prof according to Word Of Pilkey, did it mention (or imply) what program/course she does in the books. like, on the one hand i can imagine something english/literature based-- maybe journalist or some professional writing degree or something communication adjacent at least
but i also like the idea of the course having some synergy (but not completely complimentary) with moses’ mechanic job, like some sort of drafter?
(probably leaning towards the journalist/professional writing program. still have to choose what subject/s she’d teach, or whether she’d be full or part time. i think she’d do well in editing or the narrative aspect of articles, because even if its non-fiction, there's always a story, plus its a nice way to tie it all back in)

Cant run Baldurs Gate 3 without killing my computer, Remnant 2 learned nothing from the previous game and the final boss was a nightmare again with an ending that we'll only get with dlc. 100+ dollars basically wasted.
Buy Psuedoregalia for not even 8 bucks, mood is immediately lifted by the creative freedom of all the crazy movement mechanics, music, and cute goat-bunny-cat girl.
I had the same thing happen when I gave up on BG3 early access, foolishly thinking that a big company like Larian, who has clearly put several years into their game, would also put in the time to optimize the final product. Immediately after that I bought Dungeon Drafters for like 20-ish bucks I think and then it was just a full 180 mood change.
I wanna say that I wont make the same mistake anymore, cause Armored Core (which I seriously doubt I'll be able to run based off of Elden Ring's performance) is on the horizon, but my disdain for big studios continues to grow.
Support more indie devs, no big studio is gonna give you a pants-less goat girl doing sick acrobatics.

Jones, i am lookikg for recommendations for deck building gamesa. Im q fan of Cryptozoic (specifically the dc one but they are all designed to work together), Ascension, and Slay the Spire. Basically I'm looking something to capture the feel of booster draft without having to buy packs everytime or build a cube. Any good recommendations?
There’s a number of good ones!
The grandaddy of all deckbuilders is Dominion. If you enjoy reconfiguring your deck and forming a strategy nearly all deckbuilders afterwards take inspiration from its mechanics. It’s solid through and through, easy to onboard new people with mechanical depth to keep your interest. It’s also loaded with expansions.
I would also make special mentions to Res Arcana and its expansions. Res Arcana is a game where we’re all wizards using magical artifacts to claim places of power and monuments to reach a threshold of victory points the fastest. It has a draft variant with mechanics similar to combo building with magic the gathering. You want to see the interactions between your cards and how they produce resources that work together, and with expansions the draft variant for Res Arcana has been an absolute delight.
Now if you’re looking for DRAFT specifically there’s lots of games that utilize draft as a game. 7 Wonders is fantastic for it. Like Dominion it’s got simplicity and depth letting you introduce people to it easy.
Flourish is another good drafter with some interesting bits on how your hand doesn’t get passed around, with scoring relying on your neighbors’ gardens making you consider what cards you leave over their garden wall.
Sushi Go is also a very solid and easy drafting game. More experienced players might lose interest, but Sushi Go Party can host 8 people and doesn’t slow down for it. And the art is cute as fuck.
I’m also going to recommend Wingspan to you. It’s an engine building game with delightful bird art, and while it doesn’t have straight deck building or booster drafting you are playing bird cards down to form engines so when you pick different actions you set off chains of actions to play more efficiently. Note
“the biggest fans of draft tend to prefer two-player games” this hasn’t stopped WotC from making draft “Commander” products, why would it be relevant here but not there?
The question was where to put “draft affecting” mechanics, so I said in a set that most appeals to drafters. Draft Commander products are offering a draft product to Commander players, so a different audience.
