Today is World Heritage Day

Oiginally known as the International Monuments and Sites Da it is a global celebration of this planet’s heritage. It’s all about increasing the awareness of the importance of the diversity of cultural and natural heritage and preserving this heritage for future generations..

In Scotland we’re lucky enough to have no less than six UNESCO World Heritage Sites. they are;

St Kilda.

The remote Hebridean island archipelago is one of only two-dozen global locations with World Heritage Status for both natural and cultural significance.

The archipelago shares this honour with natural and cultural wonders such as the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu in Peru and Mount Athos in Greece.

I'd love to visit, but it is a wee bit too expensive for me.

Edinburgh Old and New Towns.

Some people have asked me which part of Edinburgh is covered by this title, well the simple answer is all of it!

The capital is a city of many eras, and its World Heritage Site comprises both the old and new towns. The Auld Toon has preserved much of its medieval street plan and Reformation-era buildings along the wynds of the Royal Mile.

The (relatively) New town contrasts this perfectly with neoclassical and Georgian architecture in regimented order.

Antonine Wall.

I've explored many parts of the wall. Constructed around 142 AD by the Romans, the Antonine Wall marked the north-west frontier of their empire. Stretching from the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde, the Antonine Wall separated the civilised Romans from the wild Caledonians.

The Heart of Neolithic Orkney

I've not visited The Northen Isles as yet, plans were in the early stages to go this year, but my friend ended up in hospita and is still recuprating, hopefully we can get something sorted when she becomes more able.

The Orkney mainland is synonymous with archaeology. It boasts the mysterious standing stones at the Ring of Brodgar and megaliths at Standing Stones of Stenness, as well as the 5,000-year-old settlement of Skara Brae and chambered cairn and passage grave of Maeshowe. Together these four sites form the heart of Neolithic Orkney, which was given World Heritage status in 1999.

The Forth Bridge

I remember as a bairn drawing and painting the bridge with a steam train going over it, but the train going over the "bumps!"

One of our most iconic and beloved bridges, the Forth Bridge was named a World Heritage Site in 2015 just after its 125th anniversary. The bridge was one of the most ambitious projects of its kind ever attempted at the time. When it opened it had the longest single cantilever bridge span in the world.

New Lanark

The last mill closed in the 1960s but a restoration programme saved the 18th-century village from falling into dilapidation.

It is an early example of utopian socialism in Scotland as well as a planned settlement – making New Lanark an important milestone in the historical development of urban planning. I have never visited, I must say I much prefer my ruined castles and abbeys.

Well, this is the year it finally happens! This will be a refreshing addition to my usual themes and allow me room to be a bit more imaginative. During the last few years, I’ve grown in many directions, so now it is time for my artwork to catch up and realign with my evolved interests and inspirations. This incorporation feels very natural and easy. I’ll still be creating drawings inspired by historical witchcraft, magic, the occult, and folklore, but I’ll be introducing more medieval and fantastical themes to create something eclectic and unique! This manip was one of the hardest I’ve ever had to do, mostly because it’s a couple manip. It’s hard enough to match a body with a head let alone two heads. Ben was easy tho, his head is Clyde and his hair, pose and lighting fell into it perfectly. Rey, however, took me ages to find, like the stubborn gremlin she is. But when it all came together I was super proud and inspiration came to write a fic too.

There’s Bendemption, a feral warrior princess, awesome Leia Organa, and Skywalker Family Feels all wrapped up into a medieval package. I’m super proud of this fics as well. I love it so much. Who knows, maybe I’ll write a smutty sequel one day 👀

236. Tracy and Laura Hickman - I6: Ravenloft (1983)

It's not everyday that you get a new AD&D setting, and particularly one that is so original and different from anything else in AD&D, clearly inspired by Dracula, Ravenloft replaces medieval fantasy with gothic horror and in the process creates one of the most popular modules and villains in the history of the game. 

The module that brought us the gloomy town of Barovia and arch-nemesis Strahd von Zarovich, this is a module bursting with ideas and innovation, one of the best of these is the idea of a randomized adventure with an ingame system for randomization, with its version of a Tarot Reading determining important elements of the story which can make replaying Ravenloft a different experience each time you do it. Strahd is also a compelling character, thoroughly evil, yet somewhat tragic and deeply intelligent. It is a challenge for players and the DM that needs to make him justice. 

It's clear that TSR knew they had something special in hand, and you can tell from the module design itself, full of great illustrations by Clyde Caldwell, it's a step above other modules of the time, using gothic motifs and gargoyles as a frame to the text, giving full pages to illustrations, this was a quality module and it marks a sea change for AD&D, where plot and character take on a much heavier weight in the game. This will be repeated next year when Dragonlance comes out and the Hickmans philosophy of game design becomes dominant in AD&D.

On December 16th 1263 the Norwegian king, Haakon the Old, died in the Bishop's Palace, Kirkwall, Orkney.

In early 1263 Scots forces of King Alexander III mounted raids on the Norwegian territories in the Outer Hebrides. Håkon IV responded in July of that year by arriving in the Firth of Clyde with a large invasion force. This took control of the Isle of Bute, capturing Rothesay Castle. What followed was a standoff between Alexander III and Håkon IV, with Alexander negotiating and playing for time in the hope that bad weather would disrupt the Norwegian fleet. This duly arrived on the night of 30 September 1263, driving part of Håkon's fleet ashore on the Scottish mainland at Largs and sinking a number of his ships.

A series of skirmishes broke out on the beach at Largs, and Håkon landed more of his ships to assist those that had been beached. The Norwegians then withdrew on hearing of the approach of a large Scottish army, and retreated to overwinter in Orkney before resuming their campaign the following Spring. But Håkon fell ill and died while staying at the Bishop's Palace in Kirkwall. On his deathbed he appointed his son Magnus as his successor. Håkon IV was buried in St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall over the winter, then his body was taken for burial in Bergen Cathedral.

The first picture is a sketch of King Haakons seal dated 15248/49, the second is of Haakon and Skule Bårdsson, Norwegian nobleman and claimant to the royal throne against Hakon from the 14th century Icelandic Flateyjarbók, an important medieval Icelandic manuscript.

💌 As Long As I can Remember: Chapter 5  💌  

Summary:  You moved to south park in the 4th grade. You weren't expecting what came next. After seven years of friendship you were about to make a move but what happens when Cartman's OTP gets in the way of what you desire most.

Notes:  Overall Kenny x reader but also some Craig x reader, I wrote this over a decade ago but I'm feeling nostolgic, this was written for a friend a long time ago

It was nearing the end of summer in this quiet little mountain town and today unlike most, it was literally so quiet you could hear a pin drop.  It was too quiet for comfort. This could only mean one thing and one thing only. Something was about to go down.

A young girl stands in her bed room by the window. Looking out over the normally busy streets she saw absolutely no movement "Something's not right here." She could sense that something was off, but what was it? What could possibly be happening right now? Whatever it was (Y/N) was going to get to the bottom of it. Upon leaving the house it became apparent of where she needed to go. Whenever something happens whose fault is it normally "Cartman"

[1 hour earlier, in Cartman's basement]

"We are gathered here today to forge the basic idea of this new game many of our fellow classmates have requested. The simple game of war between humans and elves. Now I think we can do much better than that. Think about it did Hitler just systematically kill every Jew he saw, no! He had a reason for it." Kyle stood up but Stan covered his mouth not want things to take a turn for the worst, knowing how the two tend to have very intense and violent aftermaths. Cartman stood among the rest of the 4th grade boys in front whiteboard. He had been thinking about the game all summer, but no one wanted to play a game where they have to beat up Kyle. Instead he recognized that the last time they played medieval that Kyle wanted to make an elf army to oppose him, so he just had to work with that. Tweek raised his hand

"Yes Tweek? It better be good." Cartman said in a very stern tone which made Tweek start to shake uncontrollably "AH-t,t-t-To much p-Pressure. Ah w-what if we like AH were fighting over a s-stick!" Cartman put down the whiteboard marker and sighed "Ugh that's lame Tweek! What did I say about lame ideas." Clyde put a hand on Tweeks shoulder and stood up and spoke "What if it was the stick of truth." Cartman stopped "That's, that's genius!" Cartman wrote it up on the board and circled it "Okay so we will use my backyard as the human's base 'The Kingdom of Kupa Keep' if you will and the elf base will be at Kyle's since we have the biggest backyards. I will be the Grand Wizard king of the humans and Kyle will be what ever he wants to be, I don't care. We shall ready the bases and commence the game in 1 hour. All those who want to be one the awesome human team, to the backyard! Everyone else follow Kahl."

The walk to Cartman's was interesting. You started to notice that the town felt different, almost as if you was being watched. You looked up at the tree in front of Cartman's house there was a target hanging from it. Walking up to Cartman's door you could hear movement from the backyard. You knocked on the door, Cartman's mom opened it with a smile "Why hello (Y/N) come in the others are in the backyard." You nod heading for the backyard.

"What the ever loving fantasy game!" Your jaw was on the floor, this was the most amazing thing that you had ever witnessed in your life to date. It was a dream come true.

"Amazing isn't it? It only took and hour to set up and assign everyones duties. Would you like a tour?" 

You was practically drooling "Yes please." Your eyes were as big as saucers and you started spa-zing out like Tweek.

"Over here we have our black smithery run by Clyde, and on your left the stables run by Scott Malkinson" The two of you continued into the tent to be met by, "Kenny?" You gave your friend a very confused look. Kenny was wearing Zelda's dress without his coat, exposing his smooth pale skin. You wanted to touch it. He still wore his hood but some of his natural blond hair fell out from his hood and on top of the hood he wore a blond wig which seem counter productive.

"Princess Kenny actually, just go with it. Now if you look over here, we have the greatest and most powerful artifact in the universe. The Stick of Truth, whoever wields it controls the universe. So currently I the Grand Wizard of the human control the universe." You marveled at the stick and then at Princess Kenny who oddly enough made a really convincing princess which made you jealous. 

"So can I play?" 

Cartman started laughing "You really think I'm going to let a fuck'n girl play, you really are a dumb bitch." He put his arm around princess Kenny "Right Kenny a girl could never play." Kenny looked at you with an apologetic look "I'm sorry (Y/N) I have to agree with Cartman. I wouldn't want you to get hurt."

You crossed your arms and pouted "Fine then, I didn't want to play your stupid dorky nerd game anyways! I have better things to be doing anyhow!" You flipped them both off with both hands and walked out of the tent pissed. Stomping past Craig and Clyde you flipped them off too. Craig just flipped you off back and Clyde started to tear up like he was about to cry very confused at what he had done wrong. You continued to stomp out the door and yelled "You haven't seen the last of me you fat ass!" You left and Craig finally put his hand down "She just took my trade mark." All the while Clyde started crying.

You took off to Kyle's house seeing as how Kyle mentioned that he made the elf army when they first met. "An enemy of an enemy is a friend in my book."
