I’ve been promising this post for a while now. I did a voice actor version some time ago and it was one of my favourite lists to put together. I think you guys enjoyed it too.
As we all know, an actor’s performance can really drag down an anime. There’s something heartbreaking about a painfully wooden performance in the middle of a wonderful story that rips you right out of the fantasy. On the bright side, I’ve seen more than a few characters go from boring to endearing on the strength of an actor’s charisma. Voice actors don’t have as much to work with as conventional actors. They can’t rely on body movements or smouldering looks to get their message across. So it’s doubly impressive when they manage to convey subtle emotion and complex feelings though inflection and tone alone.
And for me, these ladies do just that.
Today let us celebrate the artistry that goes into bringing some of our favourite characters to life. In no real order we have!
5. Aoi Yuuki
I don’t care how petty it sounds, I’m just going to put this right here. This young woman is shorter than me!!! A musician and traditional actress, Aoi unique voice has made her quite successful in the field. Here are a few selected roles out of the tons she has had:
Hana – Ben-To
Tsuyu – My Hero Academia
Mina – Vampire Bund
The Energetic Ringo – Daily Lives of HighSchool Boys
Sosuke – Free!! (surprised? – I was)
Victorique – Gosick
Mihoshi – Gundam
Russia – Hetalia
Kino – Kino’s journey
Futaba – Persona 5
Iris – Pokemon
Mélie – Radiant
Shinra – Durarara!!
Sunako – Shiki
Borr – SSSS.Gridman
Tanya – Saga of Tanya the Evil
Oh yeah – she’s also Madoka in some magical girl show…
She’s set to play Touka and Boogiepop in the upcoming remake and I am psyched for this!
Not to mention roles in March Comes In Like a Lion, ACCA 13, Asobi Asobase, Welcome to the Ballroom, Gangsta, Gintama, Goblin Slayer, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens, Hyakka, Hyouka, Your Name, last exile, One Punch Man, Seraph of the End, Sword Art Online II, Tanaka-kun, Tokyo Ghoul, Snafu, Yuru Yuri, and I seriously skipped over most of them. This lady works!
The surprisingly raspy quality of her vocals, and the counterintuitive depth of her tone makes her suitable for a wide range of diverse characters. A small actress with a big voice! Irresistible.
4. Chiwa Saito
Miss Saito has been acting for some time which means she’s had the chance to amass a pretty impressive portfolio. One of my favourite random facts out there, is that she is part of a voice acting groups called “MORE PEACH SUMMER SNOW”. That’s the best name ever. I’m going to rname Buddy that. (His actional name if Sir Buddy Livingston Master Chief Brown). Sadly, she is taller than me.
Yona – Yona of the Dawn
Aika – Aria
Hitagi – Monogatari series
Sigyn – Break Blade
Yuki – Vampire Bund
Chloe – Fate/Kaelid series
Natsumi – Keroro
the fantastic Riko – Kuroko’s Basketball
Louise- Gudam 00
Anita – R.O.D. TV
Kotori – rewrite
Meru – Zetsoubu Sensei
Nadeshiko – Yuru Yuri
She’s also Homura in some magical girl show…I swear I didn’t know this before researching for this post. I never realized how much I liked the Madoka casting before!
Of course there’s like a billion more titles but I’m going to name these ones because, reasons: Amanchu, Arakawa Under the Bridge, Boccano, Berserk, Dog & Scissors, D-Frag, Daily Lives of HighSchool Boys, Gintama, Girls Bravo, Kino’s journey, Last Exile, Log Horizon, Lyrica Nanoha, Murder Princess (I just like this title) One Piece, Sward Art Online, I’m just going to stop now.
You can actually hear her sing in some roles and she truly has a beautiful singing voice. It has a rich timber and she obviously has a great ear for melody. If ever she chose to switch career paths to the musical instead, I’m sure she’d have a great future. We would miss her as an actress though so let’s not encourage that!
3. Megumi Hayashibara
A more classical voice actress and one of the best known in Japan, Megumi almost became a nurse instead. There’s a certain personality that goes along with choosing a career in nursing. Caring but also resilient. You can see that peek through a bit in Megumi’s character and acting choice. Then again, there are so many to pick from I could probably make an argument for any character type.
Pai and IV – 3×3 eyes
Ai – Detective Conan
Haruko – FLCL Progressive
Haruka – Love Hina
Todomatsu – Osomatsu-kun
Paprika and Chiba – Paprika
Musashi – Pokemon
Ranma – Ranma 1/2
Lime – Saber Marionette J
Anna – Shaman King
Lina – Slayers
Ai – Video Girl Ai
Genkai – Yuu Yuu Hakusho
Hello Kitty…this woman is Hello Kitty
The incomparable Faye Valentine – Cowboy Bebop
Probably best known as Rei Ayanami – Evangelion
She can also be heard in Blue Exorcist, Bakuretsu Hunters, Sailor Moon, Blue Seed, Chihayafuru 2, Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Macross Plus, Lupin III, Maison Ikkoku, One Piece, Project A-ko, Shadow Skill, the Doreamons, Tenchi Muyou, and obviously a million more shows.
This lady’s body of work speaks for itself. I have to say I was already pretty amazed that spunky, opinionated Faye, with her womanly register and quiet monotone Rei were played by the same person, add in Hell Kitty to the mix and my mind is a little broken…and then you have comedy queen Ranma. This is the type of career you look up to!
2. Romi Park
Did you know that Romi studied Korean in university. I just find that intriguing, obviously she’s always liked languages. Ok I’m beating about the bush so let me just say it, miss Park’s performance was one of the best parts of FMA: Brotherhood for me. I literally caught myself in the middle of scenes just going, OMG the acting is phenomenal. I’ve heard great things about the English language cast but you really are missing ouy if you didn’t catch this performance.
Tōshirō Hitsugaya –  Bleach
Teresa – Claymore
Akane – Danganronpa
Tanaka – Daily Lives of High School Boys
Igarashi – Deadman Wonderland
Kenichi – Cyber Coil
Ken – Digimon
Sena – Eyeshield 21
Natsume – Gakuen Alice
Walter – Hellsing Ultimate
Switzerland – Hetalia
Angelina – Black Butler
Taiga – Major
Falis – Murder Princess (love this title)
Temari – Naruto
My precious, precious Naoto – Persona 4
Jiro – Pokemon
Syrup – Precure
Alma – Radiant
Zoe Hange – Attack on Titan
Everyone’s favourite rocker Nana Osaki – Nana
And of course Edward Elric – Fullmetal Alchemist
And if that wasn’t enough, you can hear her in Air Master, Beelzebub, Blue Dragon , Clannad After story, Detective Conan, Devil May Cry, Garo, Granblue Fantasy, Hunter x Hunter, Kill la Kill, Lupin III, Gundam 00, One Piece (everyone is in this), RahXephon, Sengoku Basara, RDG, Samurai 7, Terra Formars (cause it’s terrible), Aquarion, White Album
Romi Parks has the most devastatingly emotional voice I know. She often plays calm, cool and collected genius type characters (a lot of boys as you can see) but when an emotional contrast is needed, she really knows how to deliver, making her characters feel so real and raw.  One of the greatest performers in my opinion, she tends to make me want to see a show just to hear what she can do with the character.
Honorable Mentions
Ami Koshimizu
C,mon, she Ryuko from Kill la Kill. Always loved that sexy alto voice! Apparently she was also both Hiro and Naomi in the recent Darling and the Franxx. I loved her as Ibuki in Danganronpa. She was Kallen in Code Geass, Holo in Spice and Wolf and Yuiko in Persona. Obviously I’m skipping over st of her work including some very big roles. I suggest you look her up! The only reason she isn’t on the list proper is that I simply haven’t seen that many of her shows even though a lot are very popular.
1. Megumi Ogata
OK fine so this is a subjective choice. Well they all are really, it’s my top 5 list. Fact is, I’ve been a fan of Megumi Ogata for a long long time and I’m just always going to be. She’s the first voice talent I ever learned about and I absolutely love her work. Sure, she might have voiced a few of my anime crushes but surely that did not influence my choice in any way…. She’s much taller than me.
Ayato – Angel Beats
Haruka (Sailor Uranus) – Sailor Moon*
Jun – Captain Tsubasa
Yukito and Yue – Cardcaptor Sakura*
Makoto – Danganronpa
Nagito – Danganronpa***
Shinji – Evangelion*
Izumi Rio – Searching for the Full Moon*
the terrifying Fairies – Humanity has Declined
Cranberry – Raising Project*
Ichigou Fujimoto – Magical girl Ore
Ken – Persona 3
Yukimura – Samurai Deeper Kyo*
Akagi – Slam Dunk
Valkyrie – UFO Princess Valkyrie
Yuugi – Yu Gi Oh!*
Karuma – Yuu Yuu Hakusho*
And just o drive the point home, here are a few more at random. If you want to full list, you’ll have to look it up. I just can’t type that much! Bleach, Detective Conan, et Backers, Great Teacher Onizuka, Kino’s Journey, Magic Knight Rayearth, Tamayura, Tokyo Mew Mew,
Megumi Ogata is a revered veteran in the field. Comparing Nagito to Makoto (purposefully similar characters with a lot of very similar lines) will reveal her mastery on inflection and subtle vocalisation to embody a character way beyond their dialogue. Anyone still under the illusion that voice acting is simply reading your lines, please see master Ogata’s work!
Good list isn’t it!?! I discover new voice talent all the time mind you. I’ll be watching a show and suddenly realize that the actor is doing fantastic work. And I’m always so happy when I discover a new favourite. So please, share yours with me!
that was a lot of pics to find….

Year of Yu-Gi-Oh Part II: Toei Adaptation
After the manga comes the anime adaptation known infamously among the fandom as “season zero.”
Tumblr media
Aired in 1998, “”season zero”” has no actual season relation to the main series Duel Monster anime.  Instead, it as produced and run by Toei Animation, and follows the basic storyline of the first seven volumes of the manga, mostly in a game-of-the-week style format.  Like the manga, the story follows Yugi Mutou, a boy who solves the mysterious Millennium Puzzle which awakens a spirit in him that challenges his bullies, enemies, and other opponents to magical games.  Unlike the manga, however, the anime version heavily alters many scenes, including the content of the games, their results (few, if any characters actually die from the games, unlike the manga), filler episode plots, and most drastically, the addition of Miho Nosaka, a former oneshot character, as a recurring major character.
Tumblr media
But you all already know all of that, probably!  So here’s the important stuff: what did I think of my rewatch?  Well...
The sad thing is, I seem to recall enjoying this anime a LOT more the first time I watched it.  The second watchthrough was...less interesting.
Good stuff first, though.  Most of the main voice cast is absolutely stunning.  Megumi Ogata as Yugi/Yami Yugi in particular is incredibly strong, and I will never love a Yami Yugi voice more than hers; the soft, unassuming sort of confidence fits and characterizes Yami Yugi in a way that I don’t think any other adaptation of Yami Yugi ever could (sorry, Dan Green).
Also, I really, really love seeing the smaller, visibly young looking Yami Yugi animated in general.  Yami Yugi absolutely becomes significantly older looking than Yugi in DM and in the later half of the manga, which makes little sense considering he is using the exact same body as Yugi.  I much prefer this younger, cuter Yami Yugi, which, in my opinion, makes his entire schtick far more intimidating.  Small, childish looking Yugi Mutou challenging you to a death game?  Far more frightening and eerie than loud, brash Dan Green-ified Yami Yugi just shouting at you, imo.  Jonouchi and Anzu’s voices really stand out as a personification of their manga characters, as well.
I may be in the minority here, but I also really, really loved Miho’s addition to the main cast.  She didn’t fit into every scene, of course, and there were bits where even I felt like her inclusion was forced, but for good chunks of the series, especially in filler episodes, she absolutely shone and stood out as her own character with her own goals and motivations, who was still a part of the group and participated--and even won!!--in many of the group’s challenges.  I also just like having another girl in the group, ya know?
Smaller details that I did like: overall color palette aside, I really, REALLY love Yami Yugi’s red eyes, and I continue to describe Yami Yugi with red eyes in every fic I ever include him in.  Ryo’s green eyes are also a fave of mine.  Also: NO JOHJI!!!!  Miho basically replaces him completely in Death-T and wow, that’s honestly an even better idea than to replace him with Honda’s dog!
Now before I move on to the more negative part of this review, lemme leave you with a cute picture of Miho Nosaka:
Tumblr media
the rest is under the cut so as to avoid clogging up the dash even more, and so that y’all can avoid my negative bits if ya want.
So, down to business.  Why didn’t I really enjoy my rewatch of the Toei adaptation?
1) Pacing.  The plot episodes seem to rush themselves along as fast as they can, to try and fit as much from the manga chapter in as possible.  Filler episodes, or episodes based on filler chapters, drag out so long that it becomes a slog to get through.
2) Low animation budget.  Unfortunately, the limits of the time this anime was produced didn’t help it’s case either.  The color palette is a goddamn oversaturated mess, and some of the color choices are truly head-scratching.  Seto Kaiba with green hair?  Who decided that?  Wasn’t he already colored with brown hair on a manga volume prior to this adaptation?  Palette aside, action scenes are considerably muted due to lack of budget to fully animate them, resulting in strange cuts and boring shots.  A LOT of the charm and intensity that gave a lot of moments in the manga their punch is lost in the adaptation, as Takahashi’s more horror manga-esque style is heavily simplified and stylized to get to the screen.  The extra cartoonish coloring also contributes to a lot of the more intense scenes from the manga falling flat.
3) Sound direction.  It’s just boring.  Only Yami Yugi’s theme stands out, and even that’s not really top of the line.  Sound effects are silly and cartoonish, and I’ll be honest, I do not like the OP or ED.  And outside of the main cast....?  A lot of the voice acting sounds pretty dull and unmemorable.
4) Adaptation changes pt 1. Listen...I’m not here to be all Edgy and say this show was bad because it refused to kill people.  But this anime completely pulls its punches when it comes to...everything.  As far as I can remember, not a single person actually dies during the series, despite Yami Yugi killing or hospitalizing at least five-six people in the manga.  It just hits a lot less hard when all he’s done is given someone an illusion of being burned to death instead of him actually dropping his cigarette butt into the alcohol and lighting himself on fire.  For some reason, it just makes everything feel a bit flatter.
5) Adaptation changes pt 2. The games!!!  They’re boring!!!  The real draw, for me, of the manga was when Yami Yugi used ordinary items in his surroundings to pull together a game.  In the anime, he just pops them into a weird, nightmare dimension where weird shit happens and the games never make sense.  Not to mention, the anime adds a lot of extra encounters with Kaiba than the manga had, including extra Duel Monsters games.  And while Takahashi had little to no rules for the game in the first place, in the anime, when they don’t have a manga script to follow, it is a goddamn free for all. It’s like Calvinball up in here, making up shit left and right, even WORSE than the manga ever did, and it’s...not fun to watch.  At all. Not understanding what’s happening just makes me, as a viewer, feel cheated and let down.
6) Adaptation changes pt 3.  Due to the nature of the adaptation, a lot of bits and pieces of character arcs were switched around, cut out, or straight up ignored.  Mokuba does not go rescue Honda from the blocks game in Death-T.  The Jonouchi-Hirutani arc is condensed from its original several chapters span into a single episode.  And there are other examples as well, that I think overall do a disservice to the cast and the individual characters.
So, my overall verdict?  Unless you are a super die-hard fan of Yu-Gi-Oh, particular DM, I don’t think the anime is worth the time.  It’s quirky, funny, and can be fun in places, but overall, it at least wasn’t really worth my second watch.
I’m still stealing Miho for my own purposes, though.

Fire Types are all about passion. When they want something, they go for it all-out. Unfortunately, sometimes they tend to burn themselves out as well by pressing TOO hard. They may be great at getting things done, but it’s gonna be on their schedule and no one else’s.

Background story
Yu-Gi-Oh season 0, the beginning
The spirit, having no memories of his own, goes about as “Another Yugi”. Dangerous and unstable, he has no problem punishing evildoers with his Shadow Games and even seems to enjoy doing so at first. It may be possible some of the criminals have even died from Yami Yugi’s Shadow Games. In his unstable state, his behaviour seems childish early on, not feeling guilt or thinking of the consequences of his Shadow Games at first. The more time the spirit spends with Yugi, the calmer, kinder and more serious he becomes, until he stops with Shadow Games entirely.
Yu-Gi-Oh season Duel Monsters
An ancient spirit trapped inside the Millennium Puzzle who has forgotten almost everything, including his name. All that is left his rich, dark knowledge of games and puzzles. Extremely skilled in any kind of game, he is able to learn about new ones at a fast rate, as well as the technology involved in said games. When Yugi is in danger, the spirit possesses his host, taking over the body to help deal with the threat.
Often referred to as Yami Yugi, his assertive, fierce and commanding personality is a stark contrast to his host’s, giving off the aura of a leader. It seems he can be quite oblivious about romantic advances unless they are blatantly obvious. Despite his serious demeanor, he doesn’t shy away from jokes, even friendly teasing Yugi and the others at times. However, as the name Yami Yugi (Dark Yugi) suggests, he carries darkness in his heart. He can be blunt and selfish, early on even downright cruel and unforgiving, needing to be taught kindness and compassion from Yugi. While he has a high self-esteem, this can falter, showing vulnerability underneath.
The more he remembers about his past, the more he breaks away from the “yugi alter ego”, forming his own identity once more…

Preference headcanons
Yami Yugi is pansexual.
He shares Yugi’s love for cats.
His favorite color is purple. In addition he appreciates warm colors such as red.
He would never wear a mummy costume during Halloween, but doesn’t have problems with others doing it.
Yami Yugi has different views on certain aspects of society, some being quite controversial by modern standards. Polygamy, one thing that is considered controversial, is something he has considered at times. Atem is definitely into polygamy. (This headcanon only applies when both RPers agree).
In postcanon, Yami embraces both past and future by taking on both names. On official documents such as birth certificate and his passport he uses his official name Atem. “Yami” remains the go-to nickname, though “Other Me” and “Pharaoh” are still sometimes used. With a body of his own people are less likely to call him “Yugi” when he is near his partner.
Physical headcanons
Yami likes, even really needs, physical contact. After thousands of years as an intangible spirit, he wants to “feel” again. However, he does not initiate contact until he knows the other person is comfortable with it. He’s also not open about this particular need as he does not want to embarass himself or others.
In RPs starting early in the timeline, such as season 0 related content, Yami will have his lighter season 0 voice (VA: Megumi Ogata). Over time his voice deepens as his host ages, though the changes are far more drastic and noticable than with Yugi. Later in the timeline he has the DM dub voice (VA: Dan Green)
When he has a body of his own, he jogs every morning and does several other workouts to stay in shape. Because cold winters make him unable to work out, others tease him for the bit of “babyfat” that becomes visible during these months. Don’t tease him about it! Or maybe you should? ;)
Mental/behavior headcanons
Yami Yugi has agoraphobia: an abnormal fear of being in crowds, public places or open areas, as well as uncontrollable social situations. After thousands of years inside the Puzzle, the crowded open spaces have become overwhelming to him. Despite his desire for freedom, his small prison had become his comfort zone. He copes by focusing on one person, a topic (talking about games) or a duel when in an open stadium, having tunnel vision. Yami is exceptionally capable of masking his anxiety, but when he is unable to cope, he will try to retreat and give control to Yugi.
If there is anything Yami has less knowledge about than Yugi, it’s smut, at least modern-time variants of it. Innuendo jokes tend to get over his head. This doesn’t mean he can’t be cheeky, though! ;)
The pharaoh is often compared to a cat. Moody, graceful, even letting out sounds similar to a purr when comfortable with someone. Calling him a “cat pharaoh” will fluster him.
Yami Yugi’s texting and online chat responses are very elaborate and grammatically correct. If he’s furious or particularly passionate about a subject (example: Duel Monsters), he writes his response in all-caps. He only uses emojis when chatting with Yugi, and even then it’s done somewhat sparingly.
Unlike Yugi, Yami Yugi has no distinct accent when speaking English. Atem, on the other hand, has a light accent as he speaks Coptic.
While Yugi has a distinct real (“honne”) and public (“tatemae”) opinion, Yami’s opinion tends to be both real and public. As a result, he tends to sound brash, not wanting to sugarcoat things. If he dislikes someone, he will let that person know right away. The only times Yami sugarcoats his opinions is towards Yugi, as he’s generally very gentle towards the other.

Background story
Yu-Gi-Oh season 0, the beginning
Before solving the Millennium Puzzle, Yugi often kept to himself to play games. Despite his withdrawn behaviour, he would love to play games with people and make friends. Yugi lacks confidence, bringing himself down at times. In this time period he is far more polite towards others. The more he warms up to someone, the more casual and confident he becomes.
Whenever Yugi is possessed, he “becomes a completely different person” (Yami Yugi) in the eyes of others. Early on, Yugi doesn’t remember the actions of his “Other Self”, not even aware of the other’s existence at all. The spirit’s influence slowly makes Yugi more confident over time, as well.
Yu-Gi-Oh season Duel Monsters
Yugi Mutou is a childlike, kindhearted teenager who loves puzzles and games, showing remarkable puzzle-solving and gaming skills. He is a selfless person, protecting his friends and loved ones with absolute loyalty. However, this causes people with bad intentions to take advantage of his good heart, as a result the small teen tends to end up in bad or downright dangerous situations.
He lives in the game store Kame Game, together with his mother and grandfatherSugoroku Mutou (Dr. Solomon Muto). His father is rarely at home, often away on business trips. After 8 years, Yugi finally managed to solve the Millennium Puzzle, awakening the ancient, nameless spirit trapped inside.
Yugi lacks physical strength, agility and endurance, and refrains from using violence. He often becomes the target of vicious bullies and criminals who do not hesitate to beat him up. Stressful moments like these trigger the ancient spirit, possessing Yugi in order to take care of the threat.
This small teen has a bit of a perverted side, making him not entirely innocent ;)

Preference headcanons:
Yugi’s current sexual orientation is bisexual, but he still may not be sure about things yet.
His favorite animal is the domestic cat, though he likes many different animals, including pandas.
Purple is Yugi’s favorite color, though he likes cold colors such as blue as well.
Physical headcanons:
Headcanon: Yugi can suffer from hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, and often takes glucagon with him in case of an emergency. Left untreated it can worsen and even turn lethal. (The manga mentions insulin at one point, which would actually make his particular condition worse!)
Because Yugi was beaten up often early on, cuts, bruises and even scars tend to be present. He will do his best to hide injuries as to not worry his friends and family.
Regarding physical contact, though Yugi likes it, he is shy about it. Yugi prefers to initiate, better at giving hugs than receiving them. He will get shy and blush when someone hugs him. When comfortable with someone, he tends to hug often!
In RPs starting early in the timeline, such as season 0 related content, Yugi will have his light, squeaky season 0 voice (VA: Megumi Ogata). Over time his voice deepens as he ages. Later in the timeline he has the DM dub voice (VA: Dan Green).
With a lot of effort, yet still with some imperfections, Yugi can lower his voice to Yami Yugi’s range. He would do this to speak in a mocking voice, to tease or as lighthearted mimicking. However, he hasn’t made an attempt… yet. Voice training could improve this.
Mental/behavior headcanons:
Early on, Yugi is very polite and timid, especially towards new people, which reflects in his speech. This behaviour is partially due to the lack of social interaction, as well as his upbringing and cultural influences (Domino City is in Japan).
The constant physical abuse Yugi endured causes him to flinch when someone yells at him or makes sudden movements.
When chatting online or through text messages, Yugi uses a lot of emojis to express himself. Most of the time he writes his comments without caps and adds internet slang to shorten the posts. The excessive use of emojis and internet slang adds to his childlike behaviour.
Despite the English dialogue on this blog, he actually speaks Japanese (he was born and raised in Japan, after all). He is able to speak English however. When speaking actual English he might refrain from using complex words, which does not help his already childlike behaviour and appearance. In addition, his English speech is often coated with a thick, Japanese accent.
As a Japanese person, Yugi has a distinct difference between opinions: his real opinion (“honne”) and public opinion (“tatemae”). Because of this, while he speaks neutrally or postively about someone to keep peace, he may not think as positively about the person in his thoughts. However, when asked, pressured, or angered considerably, he will fess up his real opinion to someone.
“In general, you should keep your real opinion (honne) to yourself and be polite by offering public opinions (tatemae) that are meant to maintain harmony.”
Tumblr media
My Yugi muse will refer to my Yami Yugi muse in different ways depending on time and context: “Other Me”, “Spirit”, “Pharaoh”, “Yami” or “Atem”. “Yami” will be used most if they are close friends, or “Atem” when he remembers. Please specify the preferred nicknames if you RP one of these muses as well!
