(Writer’s Note: In October 2021 my father passed away. It was very fitting that we were in an expansion that dealt with death and loss when I had been preparing for his passing as I watched him decline. I started writing this piece a few months after his death as a sort of healing process. I put a lot of myself and grief into Melathor’s story, so this piece is me being vulnerable and getting some of it out. To those who also struggle with grief, I hope my words bring you a little comfort in the dark. - Melanie)
This is the first time I picked up a quill in what feels like ages. Who would have thought that time spent in the land of the dead could make one feel so alive?
The Shadowlands, where everything feels like a giant shadow looming over you. I suppose that’s what the constant threat of death feels like so it is rather fitting. I’ve been here for far too long with no contact from the outside. I wonder if my loved ones think I’ve met with a tragic end or if they even miss me? I just haven’t had it in me to send word to let them know I’m alright, and I understand that is a very selfish thing for me to do. No matter, the Venthyr have been nothing but gracious hosts. I have a lot more to thank them for.
I came here in search of something that I didn’t know was unobtainable. I came here looking for whatever may have remained of Marion and my mother. What I found was nothing. Yet another void opened up to swallow me whole. It was like I was a child again frozen in fear on that beach, or a young man cornered in the streets of Gilneas, unable to fend off those feral beasts. Choking on my pent up rage, fear, and grief once again, The Accuser came to me and offered me counsel to purge my burdens.
I’ve seen glimpses of the atonement process happen to others, but as my case was different, I didn’t think it would be as grueling. I was wrong. It’s an exhausting and ugly process facilitated by digging up the most painful of memories. My sessions happen about twice a week, and each time I’m left as an empty vessel on the ground covered in my own tears and sweat. Each time my body feels a little weaker yet my heart feels a bit lighter. It’s not a process of forgetting but more a process of forgiving… of complacency. None of the things that happened were my fault, and I need to stop dragging that grief along like a bag of rocks. I’m hoping I can remember these lessons once I leave here as this is a place I don’t want to return to when it’s my time to go.
The portals have opened back up to the cities, and I am free to leave. I am beyond ready to return to Azeroth. The first thing I’m doing once I set foot off the boat to Boralus is give my father the biggest hug I can muster up. Next I’m going to visit a special someone who has been by my side since we first met. I have some things I need to tell her. And finally, once I have a night’s rest in a familiar bed, I will plan the next steps in my adventure.
You should never stay in one place too long lest you become complacent in everything you do.

It’s been a while, and I’m finally happy to share a new playlist with you all. This one has been in the works for a while, and I was going to publish it on 8tracks like my other two, but they are closing down. I took the time to move each playlist over to Spotify and replace the new songs that were not available on that platform - Wait for the Night and Descent with Demons.
I hope you will give them a listen and enjoy them as much as I do. I know things have been quiet here, and I’m hoping Shadowlands ignites a little more passion into me and Melathor. So without further ado, here is the new playlist.

“I had the strangest dream last night. I was another version of myself in some distant place that I don't think I've ever visited before. Everything was hazy and there were many others around me. I'm not sure what to make of it all.”

Time has escaped me.
I honestly don’t feel like the same person I was a few months ago. I didn’t settle into Boralus as well as I would have liked. I was often sick from the bobbing sea with being so close to the docks. Just the thought of looking over it, never mind getting on a ship, makes me nauseated. Everything smells of the salty air; constant reminders of the coasts back home and constant reminders of Marion. Father never speaks of her or mother, but I know he misses them dearly; as do I.
As planned, with the help of Mr. Hargrave, my father was able to gain council with House Proudmoore to re-establish his trading business. It took some time, but it finally happened. Corbett’s Trading Co. is tucked away in the back corner of Mariner’s Row. It’s not the best place as stock must be carted in and out, but it sure beats having to worry about the Legion every second of the day. I’ve been helping him with checking in stock and making sure the ledgers balance correctly. He currently has no desire to return to Bradensbrook, but I know he dreams of having the family business back in Gilneas. I suppose this shop would serve as it’s “twin”.
As much as I’ve settled in here, I do miss my home. I miss teaching, and my spell books, and I miss… her. This almost feels like a normal life, and I hate that I feel content with this. I almost want to forget everything involving magic and demons, move here permanently, marry, have children, and just live…
Those thoughts scare me more than anything. I’ve been on the roughest battlefields, saw the greatest of men and women fall before me, and the thought of living a normal life is what scares me more than death.
Time has escaped me once again. I’ve been sitting here for an hour, mostly daydreaming and writing nothing of substance here. The bells from the afternoon ships coming to port have broken me out of my haze. Sometimes one must bring a compass and map to accompany one's thoughts. Thankfully no one knows of this journal, but perhaps I will tear out this page and dispose of it just in case. Too many wishful things here.
I believe the flames may appreciate this gift.

A while back I answered an OC meme on Twitter where for each like, I would post a random fact about my OC. So for those of you who are new, this is a good little introduction into Melathor and some of my headcanon behind him.
As always, if you have any other questions for me or Melathor, you can ask them here.
1. When I decided to make Melathor into an OC, I used the Victorian era as inspiration for him and my Gilnean writings. I also did research for his surname as I wanted him to be a mysterious character and also play into the raven theme that you see with Gilneas and many worgen.
2. The Corbett family consists of Victor (father), Margaret (mother), Melathor (older brother), and Marion (younger sister). Melathor and his father are the only two who are alive. Margaret lost her life during the worgen attack on Gilneas City, and Marion drowned at a young age.
3. Melathor still carries the weight of his sister’s death. Though it was an accident, he still feels as if he is to blame for taking her out to play along the coast that day. At all times he carries around a mourning locket which has her picture and a lock of her hair inside.
4. The Corbett’s hired different private instructors to teach their children. Melathor dreaded doing his schoolwork, and would often fall asleep during lessons. He also had a riding coach and a music teacher. A little known fact is that he can play the piano exceptionally well.
5. A common practice among noble families was arranged marriage. Victor and Margaret (who was previously daughter of the Witney mining family) were set up by their parents. Had Gilneas not have fallen, Melathor would have been paired with the daughter from another prominent house.
6. The Corbett family business dealt in trading. Through this Victor was able to help the Northgate Rebels by hiding weapon caches in the city. He publicly remained aligned with Greymane to keep his family safe. Melathor still has no idea of his father’s involvement in this event.
7. Mortimer is Melathor’s pet raven. During his last walk through the city , he found the raven sitting atop an old hat shop, cawing toward him. Instead of taking it as a bad omen, he took it as a sign of rebirth. Fun fact: the raven shares his namesake with the old hat maker.
8. Melathor had never shown a previous affinity toward magic. It wasn’t until he was out of Gilneas and in Stormwind City that his interests were piqued by a few new friends who were studying demonology in the warlock circle.
9. Despite hating his studies as a child, Melathor immersed himself into learning everything his warlock masters could teach. When that wasn’t enough, he searched for old relics and books to study. He currently takes on a few students when he can and teaches them what he’s learned.
10. Due to his studies on older practiced warlock spells, he was able to successfully summon and bind an incubus demon to himself. Malkirath was a gift which kick-started Melathor’s journey to learn this old ritual. The incubus served him many years before the events of Legion.
11. During Legion, Melathor rekindled his relationship with his father, who he previously thought to be dead. Victor left Bradensbrook and traveled to Boralus with his son. There they both are working to start back up the family trade business.
12. While Melathor is infected with the worgen curse, I usually always have him in his human form. I like to keep his worgen transformation almost exclusively for use in battle, as he considers it improper etiquette to constantly be in that state.
13. Melathor is a flirt by nature, so I never considered a partner for him, though I’ve had a few asks about it. However, through his story he has built up feelings for someone. He has never shared them publicly and possibly never will. Shh… It’s his own secret crush.
14. Many think his monocle many be just a fashion statement, but the reality is that his eyesight isn’t the best anymore. Melathor also wears reading glasses when pouring over old manuscripts in the evening. A constant reading by candlelight will do that to you, but he never learns.
15. I love many of the warlock sets in Warcraft, I prefer to have Melathor appear in fancier clothing. As I said earlier, I used the Victorian era for inspiration, so I imagine most of his clothing to be that style - embellished coats, silk cravats, crushed velvets in dark colors.
16. While he appears very confident on the outside, Melathor is a very reserved character. He’s very self conscious about his body due to scars received from the attack on Gilneas, and this is why he is always covered from head to toe; No shirtless sunbathing for him.
17. According to his friends, Melathor knows how to throw a great party. Not only does he always have the best booze from around Azeroth, but he is also a pretty good cook of traditional Gilnean cuisine. One of his dreams is to throw a huge masquerade party around Hallow's End.
18. As mentioned earlier, Mortimer is his pet raven, but Melathor also has a thoroughbred Gilnean mountain horse named Welby. Welby is of a royal bloodline, so he is rarely used for anything that would be dangerous. Instead he enjoys joyrides and grazing.
19. Melathor travels a bunch due to his loyalty to King Greymane and the warlock council, but he does have a permanent home in Surwich that he can go to when he needs a rest. This is a place he feels comfortable with as it reminds him a bit of his old life in Gilneas.
20. When he decided to move to Surwich, there were a few familiar faces that he recognized from Gilneas. One of those happened to be an old acquaintance named Lucien who Melathor wasn’t particularly kind to as a young boy. Their friendship has and possibly never will be repaired.
21. Another character that often appears in his stories is Deryn Hargrave. He is a worgen houndmaster who is a rather unsavory type. Deryn became friends with Victor through the Northgate Rebellion back in Gilneas. He always refers to Melathor as “Vic’s boy”.

As Legion is coming to and end, I decided to post a quick outline of stories and journal entries to help people catch up on Melathor’s story. The stories posted first are longer reads, and go more in dept to things that happened. The journal entries are more plentiful and give quick little snippets into events. I like to think of those as a timeline themselves as you can just read those and get a good understanding of what has happened.
If you would like to see all of my original Legion content together, you can search the #Legion tag on my blog. This includes some creations I made and many screenshots with written rambles.

I know I’ve been quiet here, but as the pre-patch goes live, I will be posting a new journal entry reflecting things that will set the motion for the Battle for Azeroth events. As I didn’t play much of the beta and tried to remain spoiler free, I will have an outline of main story points to post, but they are heavily subject to change.
Once again, a huge thanks to all of my followers for sticking around. You have made me and Melathor’s life much better because of your interactions and interest in the stories we have to tell.

Meet Melathor Corbett
First off I want to give a huge thanks to @josiehastings for tagging me to do this. Sorry it took me so long to fill out!
Instructions: Fill out the questions about your muse, repost don’t reblog, and tag as many people as you want.
Tumblr media
Melathor Corbett Gilnean noble - demonologist - traveler
1) What does your muse smell like? I always imagined him to smell like Dorian from BPAL. Surprise, you can actually buy this if you want to smell like him; vanilla, black tea, and crushed flowers in one little delicious vial.
2) How often does your muse bathe/shower? He will try to bathe daily. The only time this changes is when he’s on a mission or out for battle. At that time, he will wash up when he can and bath when he comes across a tavern.
3) Does your muse have any tattoos or piercings? He has no piercings or tattoos and doesn’t plan on getting any.
4) Any body movement quirks (e.g. tapping heel, shaking knee)? It may not be completely noticeable to others, but he often fidgets with his sister’s mourning locket he keeps in his pocket. He will also bite his lips in tense situations.
5) What do they sleep in? Usually a loose linen shirt and comfortable trousers, but sometimes it’s in the nude.
6) What’s their favorite piece of clothing? Probably his cravat. He won’t even wear his warlock robes without one.
7) What do they do when they wake up? He usually opens a window to try to get some fresh air in and see what Mortimer has left him on the windowsill.
8) How do they sleep? Position? He usually sleeps on his back.
9) What do their hands feel like? His fingertips are pretty soft but palms are more rough due to casting spells. When in worgen form, his hands feel softer due to padding and fur.
Tagging: @rakaeltowers @curiouscodex @penvenomstarkstar and whoever else wants to do this. Tag me so I can see!
