I was going to ask the same of Silvika, but I feel like both of them would just be mildly miffed at the inconvenience and since Sevika is so competent, things would remain largely the same until they found a solution. New Accuphase DP-570 CD/SACD/DAC now on Demo!

So I must admit I have become a bot of an Accuphase fan boy since taking on the brand last year, firstly there isn’t much HiFi out there that is as well made as Accuphase but at the end of the day that is pointless if it doesn’t sound any good and that is where Accuphase really wins as whether looking at their integrated amps or their Pre/Power’s you get a very natural and organic sound but with no loss of detail, it really is a sound you could listen to all genres of music too for many hours on end without any fatigue and as a bonus for me they look gorgeous too in a retro way, I never thought I’d like Gold HiFi to be honest but it really does ooze class.

Anyway enough of me gushing about how much I like Accuphase, the point of this blog is that last week we took delivery of the new Accuphase DP-570 CD/SACD/DAC so now we can demo a full Accuphase system, this has just come out and apparently we have the first model in the country, it retails for £10,200 so not cheap but actually when you look what it offers it isn’t bad value really, since getting it I have been having a good listen and it really doesn’t disappoint, what I love is it will play CD and SACD but it also has digital inputs and outputs so for me the winner is that you can hook a Melco up to it over USB and you have all your digital bases covered whether you have a big CD/SACD collection or you like to stream or have a big HiRes library you can access everything at a really high level with a lovely smallish system, currently I am running our E-800 Class A integrated amp with the DP-570 partnered with a Melco N100 into the Focal Scala Utopias all hooked up with Atlas Asimi cables and it really does sound epic, wish we could have everyone in for a listen.

Foreign casino operators go all in as they vie for Osaka license

OSAKA (Reuters) – In late July, a lavish fireworks display lit up Osaka’s skies in the finale to one of Japan’s most famous festivals, courtesy of a first-time sponsor: Macau casino operator Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd (MLCO.O).

The company’s chief executive, 41-year-old billionaire Lawrence Ho, had only hours earlier met Osaka’s governor after a donation for natural disaster preparation.

Also in town was MGM Resorts International’s (MGM.N) chief executive, Jim Murren. He didn’t bring a donation – just the Blue Man Group to entertain around 100 guests on a chartered boat.

The partying and pageantry were part of a concerted effort to convince Osaka who should operate one of Japan’s first casino resorts. Just days before, the country authorized the initial three licenses.

Thanks to strong local political support, an available site and a supportive business community, the western Japanese metropolis of 2.7 million is widely expected to become the first major city to host a casino.

“Tokyo has not raised its hand, Yokohama has not raised its hand – Osaka has raised its hand,” said Ed Bowers, MGM’s executive vice president of global development.

A huge new revenue stream is on the line for the casino operators, which also include Galaxy Entertainment Corp (GALE.BO), Caesars Entertainment Corp (CZR.O), Genting Singapore Ltd (GENS.SI) and Las Vegas Sands Corp (LVS.N). An Osaka casino could generate $4 billion a year, Morgan Stanley says.

For Osaka, which has seen its wealth and power fade in relation to Tokyo, gambling could boost tourism and bring in much-needed money. It hopes to open a resort by 2024, but even after it picks an operator it must win government approval.

“I want to properly nurture the tourism industry in Osaka as one of its pillars,” Osaka Governor Ichiro Matsui told Reuters in an interview.

Interviews with dozens of casino executives, lobbyists and politicians depict sophisticated campaigns aimed at winning over a skeptical public, wooing local businesses and persuading officials.

And Osaka, eager to avoid even the appearance of corruption, has become more cautious in dealing with casino operators.

In July, the city reiterated a ban on officials’ attending parties, sharing meals or receiving gifts. It also prohibits officials from meeting casino representatives alone.

All told, at least eight major operators are courting Osaka. MGM, Sands and Melco have in recent years pledged to sink $10 billion into a resort.

DREAM ISLAND

Osaka wants to build a casino on a man-made site called Yumeshima, or “Dream Island.”

Yumeshima was built during Osaka’s 1970s boom times. Its bayside area was once a blue-collar district crowded with chemical factories and shipyards. But those companies moved production abroad.

The city was hit hard when Japan’s bubble economy popped, and politicians have for two decades tried with little success to revive both the waterfront and Osaka.

Still, with a four-fold surge in foreign tourists over the last five years – more than 11 million people visited Osaka in 2017, attracted by its rich culinary culture and wealth of nearby sights – casino operators see a fertile market.

“This is the greatest opportunity of my lifetime,” Melco’s Ho told Reuters by phone.

Executives from 11 casino companies have met Governor Matsui for “courtesy calls” 25 times between 2012 and May 2018, prefectural records show. Operators and other related companies have met Osaka officials 119 times since May 2017. Osaka declined to provide breakdowns of meetings by company.

HEARTS AND MINDS

Melco’s most recent donation to Osaka, reported by local media to total about 50 million yen ($450,000), wasn’t its first. Melco also gave money for victims of a June earthquake that killed four in Osaka, and for parts of western Japan devastated by flooding a month later.

The company declined to say how big those donations were; its fireworks sponsorship was worth about $9,000.

Ako Shiraogawa, Melco’s Japan president, told Reuters she reassured local officials the donations were not meant to curry favor. It was a coincidence that Ho met Osaka’s Matsui before the fireworks display, she said.

“It looks like we are doing too much,” Shiraogawa said. “But it just happened to be the same day as the festival.”

Like its Macau rival, MGM is building a bigger presence in Osaka, including an office. It says it is trying to win the “hearts and minds” of the city’s public and businesses.

Before the festival, for instance, it gave shoppers at a local arcade the chance to win tickets to its boat party.

Behind the scenes, MGM has worked to connect with Osaka companies, said Kanji Hori, who runs the Hyakusha Kai association of small businesses, which is hoping for a stake in an operating consortium.

Tokyo-based GR Japan lobbies on behalf of MGM, Bowers told Reuters. GR Japan opened an Osaka office in February, hiring as associate director a former national lawmaker from Matsui’s Ishin-no-Kai party.

For its part, Las Vegas Sands says it has focused on engaging with local officials, businesses and community groups. Its chief executive, Sheldon Adelson, met Matsui in September.

Officials from Sands declined to be interviewed.

SENSITIVE SUBJECT

In Osaka, 42 percent of residents are opposed to a casino over fears of gambling addiction and less than a fifth are in favor, a poll by public broadcaster NHK in March showed.

The city’s government is trying to swing public opinion with seminars on dependency and a message of prosperity. A resort would create more than 80,000 jobs a year in the region, officials say.

But Teruo Sakurada, a professor at Osaka’s Hannan University who heads an anti-casino group, said those positions would most likely be part-time and lower paid.

“They want tourism and foreign demand to drive the local economy, but this isn’t a sustainable model,” he said.

Despite casino operators’ enthusiasm in courting Osaka, there have so far been no major accusations of impropriety.

The only incident approaching scandal: a PwC Consulting employee on a 377 million-yen contract to advise the city on casinos attended MGM’s boat party, breaking no laws but earning a scolding from a local official. A PwC Japan spokeswoman said the incident did not violate its agreement.

“It’s natural that we need to be fully open, and make sure that citizens have no doubts about unfairness or corruption,” Matsui said. “There’s no doubt a lot of money will be involved and that it’s going to be a big business.”

METUS Wins Mitsubishi Electric Corporation Outstanding Performance Awards!

Several members of the METUS and MEUS staff members were recently presented with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation’s (MELCO’s) Outstanding Performance Award for two major projects.

Rodney Olson, Senior Director, Controls Engineering, and his team were recognized for the Whole Home Controller Development project. Rodney’s team created a product to simultaneously coordinate control of METUS systems and third-party supplemental heat systems, humidifiers, dehumidifiers and ventilation systems. The Whole Home Controller System uses the wireless interfaces of kumo cloud® to perform distributed control of both the METUS and third-party systems, automatically using the most efficient system based upon outdoor air temperature while maintaining excellent comfort indoors.

The second award went to Hirofumi Koge, Director of Research and Development, and his team for securing an order for the first METUS project within the Zero Emission Building (ZEB) Market. In the case of a ZEB, the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy. The House at Cornell Tech is a 26-story building, located on Roosevelt Island in New York City. It is the “World’s Tallest” and “First Residential” passive high-rise.

Chord Electronics Ultima Pre 2 Now On Demo!

Hi All,

So I’ve been meaning to partner our demo Chord Electronics mighty Ultima 2 Mono Power Amps with some Wilson’s for a while but I knew we would have our new demo Ultima 2 Preamplifier here soon so wanted to wait till then so we could do a full Chord setup and last week we received our Ultima 2 pre so it was game on, now we normally run the Ultima 2 amplifiers on our PMC Fenestria’s and I can honestly say I have never heard them sound better so I was really keen to give a full Chord setup a listen on our new demo Wilson Audio Alexia’s and I have to say it is a pretty potent combo.

We ran our Melco N1ZH into Chord’s Dave, unfortunately our demo M Scaler is out on loan, then into the Ultima 2 Pre and the Mono Ultima 2 amps all connected up with Atlas Asimi cabling so there was no doubt it was going to sound good but I was surprised how different it sounded to what I’m used to with Wilson’s, now I am used to running Constellation and Audio Research with Wilson��s which are brilliant partnering equipment but this Chord setup sounded so different, now bearing in mind how big these amps are you expect a big and powerful sound, which you get when called for but what really surprised me was how quick and agile they are and there is a real finesse and delicacy, such an open and airy sound with amazing seperation, it is really hard to put into words but as a total system it was captivating on all genres of music and although we normally run our Dave straight into the Ultima amps adding the Pre certainly seemed to open up the soundstage quite noticeably, is it £12,500 better? well that is always a difficult question to answer but putting it in the chain certainly helped make the system more immersive.

I love Chord’s kit, one for the sound but also for the looks, it is un-ashmadley attention grabbing and although our new Ultima 2 setup looks stunning it is the sound quality that really impresses, we will have this setup running permantley once we re-open so please feel free to make an appointment to come in for a listen anytime.

Zaha Hadid’s Radical Morpheus Hotel Opens in MacauOne of the late, great architect’s final projects has been completed—and it’s a cutting-edge masterpiece. The skyline of Macau—the autonomous territory known as China’s version of Las Vegas—just got a stunning new 40-story hotel designed by the late Pritzker Prize–winning architect Zaha Hadid. The Morpheus Hotel, which opened on June 15, rises from the City of Dreams, a resort developed by Melco Resorts & Entertainment. The 770-room glass hotel is enclosed in what claims to be the first free-form high-rise exoskeleton in the world.Though it may sound like another one of Hadid’s spectacularly over-the-top hotels, a closer look at the design of the aptly named Morpheus reveals inspirations in tradition, as well. “Zaha initially began studying traditional Chinese architecture and arts, including jade carving, when she first traveled to China in 1981,” says Viviana Muscettola, project director for Zaha Hadid Architects. Indeed, Hadid’s original plans were inspired not only by designs used in ancient jade carvings but also by geological formations naturally carved by the erosion process. The result is a building that has few precedents in modern-day architecture—one that straddles the line between new technology and historic, naturally occurring shapes.Technically, the Morpheus is two towers connected at both the top and bottom,  with three vortices “carved” out of the central section. These three create bridges between the towers that accommodate restaurants, bars, and lounges—including two dining experiences by three-Michelin-star chef Alain Ducasse and a Pierre Hermé Lounge serving delicacies from the world-renowned patisserie.Inside, the bridges are visible in the dramatic atrium, allowing for an open-plan layout that Muscettola says “regulates differing levels of privacy, acoustics, thermal comfort, and views.” The same considerations were made throughout, whether in the white-marble lobby with prismatic three-dimensional walls or in the private dining spaces surrounded by hundreds of golden “leaf” sculptures.True to Hadid’s vision as an innovator, the Morpheus is also a first in the field of architecture for the collaborative way in which it was created. Digitally generated, the structure’s model was able to be tweaked by any member of the design team from anywhere in the world at any time—and the design would be instantly recalibrated, analyzed, and checked. The result is a whole new way to design spaces, says Muscettola. “These innovations will radically change how we will build in the future.” Once again, Hadid has left her mark in more ways than one.
