So, I used to be Dehyarzad’s number one fan. I really like the sort of devotion element to sapphic ships (especially amour courtois in a sapphic context 😎) and that’s kind of what I thought it would be. Dunyarzad cares for Dehya, worrying about her injuries, appreciating her intelligence (Dehya’s logic during the Sabzeruz festival was way smarter than all the other characters) and bravery. And it is obvious that Dehya cares about Dunyarzad, beyond just a contractual obligation. She lets her go against her family’s wishes, supports her emotional well-being and cares for her during her Eleazar flare-ups. 

However I don’t really think it’s a romantic gesture anymore. Because a little after Dunyarzad is well again, Dehya leaves the Homayani household. Dehya cares about Dunyarzad, that much can’t be denied, but her whole life isn’t devoted to her. I think that Dunyarzad may have had a crush on her, considering the way she talks, but I don’t think it’s reciprocated. Dunyarzad just seems to be a woman liker in general, and possibly has a crush on Nilou (I don’t know enough about Nilou to say). The same goes for Dehya, and tends to treat women far more favourably than men.

I think that Candace is where Dehya’s true love lies. Protecting Aaru village doesn’t seem that lucrative a business venture, especially when Candace is already officially the ‘Protector of Aaru village’, and seems entirely to be from a personal motive (read: being gay for Candace). The two are very intimate, and don’t hide being close either, going shopping together, fighting together and just generally spending time together.

Dehya is nomadic, she wants to travel the world and see all of its wonders (as directly stated by herself), but always has a home in Aaru village, in Candace. Candace also relies on Dehya, for extra support in protecting the village, in confiding to someone who sees her as a regular person and not their guardian. I don’t have Dehya and haven’t played her quest, so I’m not sure how much hinting that has, but Candace herself says with a chuckle that ‘life is made easier with Dehya’ and that ‘she’s really quite adorable’.

More about ship dynamics because I love Candehya. They have the sun and moon dynamic, the fire vs water (which is subverted, Dehya is measured and goes to violence as a last resort whereas Candace will not hesitate to strike someone down). Although they are both equally intelligent and strong, Candace takes up administrative and leadership work, while Dehya is a mercenary- so Candace will provide her with lodgings, and Dehya will take her shopping with her merc wages. Candace is so embedded in community that she can’t really escape her responsibilities, and Dehya is somewhat of a lone wolf. They take solace in each other.

Although Genshin’s Sumeru racial representation is inherently problematic on a whole lot of levels, it is definitely nice to see two female darker skinned characters in a healthy and frankly cute relationship with each other, which I can’t really think of in any other video game or much other media.
