The must-see Queen show at Brisbane's Twelfth Night Theatre

The must-see Queen show at Brisbane's Twelfth Night Theatre
Tumblr media
There’s no stopping the Queer icon of Queen Freddie Mercury in The Show Must Go On: The Best of Queen.
This September, Twelfth Night Theatre is putting the ‘Queen’ in ‘Queensland’ as we prepare to be rocked by the transcendent music of Queen in The Show Must Go On: The Best of Queen.
Audiences will enjoy six incredible vocalists complete with a rock band and the orchestral stylings of the Cadenza Chamber Players.
Fans of this legendary band and its frontman, Freddie Mercury (which is all of us, let’s be honest), can gleefully expect mega anthem after mega anthem.
Featuring Queen hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, Another One Bites the Dust, Somebody to Love, Don’t Stop Me Now and so much more!
Why do we love Queen?
Bewitching audiences for decades with their theatrical fusion of Progressive Rock and Heavy Metal, Queen are a band that both defines an era and transcends generations. But it begs the question, what is it about Queen that we love so much?
“One of the reasons that I named the show The Show Must Go On is because Queen will always go on,” Music Director and Producer Lucas D. Lynch explains.
While Freddie Mercury is certainly the band’s most well-known member, the others were equally talented musicians, vocalists and writers. Brian May (guitar), Roger Taylor (drums) and John Deacon (bass) were all featured vocalists in Queen’s music, with each member having written at least one chart-topping song, making them the only band to ever do this.
Lucas, as well as being the Music Director and Producer of the show, is an acclaimed composer, orchestrator, pianist, and conductor having worked on numerous operas, ballets, theatre shows and beyond.
Describing Freddie as a “perfect Renaissance man,” Lucas’ diverse arts experience helps in understanding the full picture of Queen and how ahead of their time they were.
“Freddie was an ardent lover of opera and ballet,” Lucas tells us, referencing the band’s most famous song. “You think about Bohemian Rhapsody? What people didn’t think would work at the time will now live on in the memories of people forever.”
Glam rock
While the band’s music and theatricality certainly contributed to their legendary status, it still had another ingredient.
The Glam Rock influences of Queen ensured a steady flow of remarkable outfits which have since become synonymous with the band and are still referenced and replicated to this day.
Freddie’s skintight leotards, leather getups, camp costumes, sequin onesies, and signature gold jacket didn’t just help solidify his Queer Icon status, but also his place in the Fashion Halls of Fame.
The band also controversially appeared in drag for their I Want to Break Free video, parodying the characters of the UK soap opera Coronation Street. While loved by UK audiences and most of the world, MTV in the US was incredibly reluctant to air to video.
This didn’t stop the song from becoming one of their greatest hits, topping charts across the world and going double platinum; further showing just how ahead of their time they were.
“It’s that electric voltage, that electric energy,” Lucas says, describing the pure magic and art at work in Queen’s music and charisma. “It’s that raw and relentless talent that keeps people going back for more.”
And more is that the audiences of Brisbane will get!

The Show Must Go On: The Best of Queen
The concert, staged by Director Tess Hill, is led by a cast of six vocalists, each a professional in their respective fields of rock, heavy metal, country, folk and musical theatre.
Backed by their fellow cast, each vocalist will take turns assuming the role of Freddie to perform the songs that best showcases them in their Mercury element.
The vocalists will be joined by the Cadenza Chamber Players and a rock band, totalling twenty multi-instrumental superstars, making this show a true spectacle to behold. “Queen is epic” Lucas says, telling us something we can all agree with.
“Now I’m just trying to double down on that by putting an orchestra behind them as well.” Having orchestrated the show himself, Lucas explains that it was a fantastic opportunity as an orchestrator. “Queen has laid the perfect foundation, and all I’m doing is just expanding on what’s already brilliant. My job is just laying the orchestra over it, but I’m not touching the band, because Queen already got it right.”
Not a tribute show
Hitting Twelfth Night Theatre in September, audiences can expect something bigger than just a tribute show.
“This is not just another ‘tribute’ show … it’s going to be an 80-minute show of pure, raw, relentless energy with no interval. I think that’s the essence of Queen.”
Owner of Twelfth Night Theatre Gail Wiltshire echoes this sentiment.
“This is not a tribune show, I hate tribute shows!” she tells us with passion.
“But this brings the genius that was Freddie Mercury to life. We’re divided right now but under Mercury’s banner, we can march together and Freddy’s spirit will guide us.”
The flow of the show emulates a Queen concert. It’s guaranteed to have audiences stomping, cheering, laughing, clapping, and singing their favourite songs all the way through, because with Queen, how can you not?
“They still represent the present and future of music” Lucas tells us, explaining that this will be a Queen experience. “It’s sort of a Kaleidoscope of music, vocals and visuals,” complete with high-impact lighting, high-energy performances and all of Queen’s camp glory.

COLONY HOUSE releases “Would Ya Could Ya,” in anticipation of The Cannonballers, dropping 2/3/23
Tumblr media
The music of Colony House—an indie rock band made up of brothers Will and Caleb Chapman, as well as Scott Mills and Parke Cottrell—is playfully self-described as “landlocked surf rock.” Their personal genre designation is as much inspired by their hometown of Franklin, Tenn., as their new album The Cannonballers is: within 11 tracks, the band delves into where they come from and how a place, and its memories, have made them. “It’s too easy getting sucked into the grind of everyday life… the hustle and the hurry we all willingly subject ourselves to,” Caleb says of the newest single. “‘Would Ya Could Ya’ is about breaking the mold. At surface level, it’s a ‘let’s get outta here’ open road, never look back type of cruiser, but beneath the surface, I think it recognizes that we are often the obstacle standing in our own way and that it’s up to us to make the next move.” Following the February 3rd release of The Cannonballers, Colony House will embark on a national tour, kicking off on February 11th at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Dates HERE.  The Cannonballers marks the band’s fourth full-length release: their three previous studio collections take listeners on a journey through stories of loss, grief, and heartbreak while welcoming them into the hope that comes on the other side. Their 2014 debut, When I Was Younger, included the single “Silhouettes,” which became the #1 most played track on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation for four months straight. Only The Lonely, whose title and demeanor pay tribute to the vintage sounds of Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys, followed in 2017. The surf-rock hit, “You Know It,” went viral on Tik Tok, and has amassed 100 million streams across all platforms to date, after being featured as the soundtrack to Samsung Mobile’s nationwide ad campaign. Leave What’s Left Behind was released in January of 2020; the band managed to play half of their 40 city headline tour before being forced to pause alongside the rest of the world. Like many touring artists, they found different ways to continue to create, producing and directing a full-length feature film, “Everybody’s Looking For Some Light,” which was an official selection at the Nashville and Knoxville Film Festivals. The movie debuted at a two-day drive-in event produced by the band at Greystone Quarry in Franklin, TN. Over 2,000 people (in over 600 cars) showed up to watch the film and see Colony House perform. The band has performed their songs for worldwide audiences with two appearances on both Late Night with Seth Meyers and CONAN, as well as The Today Show, VH1’s “Morning Buzz,” and MTV Live. They have also been part of several festival lineups including Shaky Knees, Austin City Limits, Firefly, WonderBus, and Lollapalooza. 2023 will see them adding Bonnaroo to that already impressive list. The Cannonballers is an apt addition to the band’s catalog, staying true to what Colony House does best, and expanding on what their fans have gravitated to for the past decade: hope and light in the midst of it all. No frills, no gimmicks. Just heart-level rock and roll music. The Cannonballers is now available to PRE-SAVE and will be out everywhere on February 3rd, 2023. STAGE FRIGHT: bringing Marlene Dietrich to Qtopia Sydney
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/stage-fright-bringing-marlene-dietrich-to-qtopia-sydney/
STAGE FRIGHT: bringing Marlene Dietrich to Qtopia Sydney
Tumblr media
Jude Bowler has been performing on the stage for over 25 years and is bringing her hit show STAGE FRIGHT ein Kabarett to Qtopia Sydney’s The Loading Dock theatre’s inaugural season in July.
She spoke to QNews about what it’s like to channel one of the greatest cultural icons of the 20th Century, Marlene Dietrich.
When did you discover Marlene Dietrich and what does she mean to you?
I first performed the character in 2014. But people had been suggesting her to me since I was a young lesbian, first hitting Oxford St in the 90s. I didn’t understand the attraction! It wasn’t till many years later I saw a YouTube clip of her in Blonde Venus that made me really laugh, then I went down the rabbit hole. Mostly I performed her in short sets, until I came up with this show during the pandemic.
What do you think is behind her enduring appeal with audiences 30 years after her death?
The enigma. The suave eccentricity. I get all ages at my shows and everyone can reference the look and the attitude, even if they can’t all pinpoint the originator. I also get some solid aficionados! She fascinates. Dietrich was of the time, yet so far ahead of it. Her image has been seared into our pop-cultural psyche, at scale – probably the first to arrive, and likely the last to leave.
She’s been endlessly referenced by artists who’ve followed – Madonna, Bowie, Grace Jones, Freddie Mercury, Tina Turner, Kylie, The White Stripes, Ryan Murphy – American Horror Story, need I go on? Something’s been embedded deep down in us, over almost a century, that resonates. Only last year Dior used her as the inspo for their Pre-Fall collection – Dietrich wore a lot of Dior.
What do you like the most about performing as Marlene?
Being sassy and lazy … and glamourous – which is not quite my day-to-day vibe.
During her post WWII one-woman shows, Dietrich would perform songs from her movies as well as her take on contemporary popular hits. Is that something we can expect from your show?
Since you put it like that, yeah, that’s pretty much the show. “From the movies and from the records”, we do Dietrich originals + mashups of Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Blondie, even a pinch of Prince. Frankie Bouchier (my accompanist) “delights” in the range of music styles and genres we cover. Which is to politely say, it’s hilarious and ridiculous.
Marlene was a bisexual woman in an open marriage who bedded many famous Hollywood men as well as women but she has become an important style icon for lesbians. Why do you think that is?
Cause she’s smokin. She was sexy in slacks and seductive in sequins. She knew what she was about and wasn’t taking anybody’s crap for it. Style was instinct. “I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public, not for fashion, not for men. … If I dressed for myself I’d wear jeans. I adore jeans.” Have you seen her in jeans? Still smokin.
What are you looking forward to the most about bringing the show to Qtopia Sydney?
I’m thrilled to be included in the inaugural season at The Loading Dock at Qtopia. What a great space for the community, and the Arts. Plus, I’ve been touring regionally all year, from Lithgow to Broken Hill and everywhere in between, playing all kinds of venues, so a proper dressing room, in a proper theatre, for a whole week, will be a luxury! To top it off, getting to hang in my home town!

Make a Change P15 (an Explanation and Summary)
Part Fifteen (An Explanation and Summary)
So, as I recently posted, I don’t plan to continue this story any longer. As much as I loved writing it, I also...fell out of love, I suppose. I just don’t have the time, passion, or motivation to try forcing myself to write it anymore, and it’s unfair to you guys to have to accept a sloppy second, something thrown onto a document for the sake of a word count and an update. I want to write stuff I’m proud of, and that just wasn’t happening with this story.
That said, one reader asked for a summary, so that they could get some closure. Luckily, I have some notes that I took as I planned the story and started writing it, and I thought you’d like to see some of them. This includes three things: 1. The schedules for most of the main characters 2. The heroes I was planning on bringing in and 3. All of the ideas I had for “Who on Earth will Marinette end up with?” (This was a doozy.) Along with this, I want to talk about other pairings I had in mind.
With that all said, let’s hop right in!
The Schedules:
I really planned out their schedules, just so I could start figuring out who the Quantic Kids would be. I had a general idea in mind: Each student at Collège des Arts would have to take their four core classes (History, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science), a language, and then their last period would be a two hour block that focused on their artistic talent. I set it up this way so that I could integrate the Quantic Kids into Marinette’s life. (Along with this, I made it so the whole school had lunch after fourth hour, so that the morning had four hours of classes, and the afternoon had three. I note this, because some schools separate lunches based on fourth hour, so that there is an A, B, and C lunch. I...did not feel like dealing with that, and I wasn’t sure how French schools do it but I doubt it’s like that.)
Marinette Dupain-Cheng’s schedule:
1. History (right next to Félix, later on stuck between him and Adrien) The original plan never had Adrien’s arrival, it was supposed to be a moment of comic relief where Marinette and Félix were just kind of half awake and barely conscious at any given time during first hour. This is why their history teacher, Mr. Marcel, was either wide awake or dead asleep. I thought it’d be a cute moment to show off the dynamics of their exhaustion or energy, depending on the day. I didn’t show this off nearly as much as planned, however, because I shifted my focus soon after.
2. Language Arts (with Allegra). A nice, calmer class seemed perfect for Marinette, who’d probably still be waking up. Allegra is calm and classy, so it only made sense to pair the two up for the second hour.
3. Science (Claude’s here!) Loud and exciting, just like their class seems to be, it was a perfect pairing.
4. Math (with Allegra and Claude) I wanted to show off Allegra and Claude’s...chaotic dynamic.
5. English (with Allan) Marinette wants to be a fashion designer, and she had to take a language, so she thought “hey, fashion is pretty big in America, let’s learn English”. (It was also the only class I could think of that she and Allan would take...more on that later.)
6. Fashion Design. Pretty self-explanatory.
Allegra:
1. German. Allegra likes opera music, and wanted to mimic the sound of some German singers accurately.
2. Language Arts (with Marinette, as mentioned above)
3. Science (a different teacher than Marinette and Claude, though. What a pity) (Also I apparently called it ‘physics’ in my notes and I just noticed.)
4. Math (With Marinette and Claude)
5. History
6. Choir (She’s a singer.)
Claude Mercury:
1. English (It was for the theatre, but also for Shakespeare, but more accurately….for Shakespeare’s more inappropriate humor.) (and memes)
2. History
3. Science (with Marinette) (Lots of explosions and fires were planned)
4. Math (With Allegra and Marinette)
5. Language Arts
6. Drama. He was just a simple thespian lad who wanted to have fun and make friends, what can I say?
Allan:
1. Math
2. Science
3. Language Arts
4. History
5. English (with Marinette) He likes hip hop and rap, and wanted to learn English rap, too. He, like Claude, also loves their memes, and I planned to have a few moments where he explained some to Marinette.
6. Dance. Mainly hip hop, although the boy can break dance a little bit
Félix Agreste:
1. History (with Marinette) He’s tired in the morning, but good at reciting dates. Again, had a lot more planned for this.
2. Math
3. Spanish. (“Come on, guys, it’s logical. It’s one of the most spoken languages in the world.” -Félix, probably.) I also planned for Félix to already know English. I wanted a cute chapter where he tutored Marinette, only for Claude to start dramatically monologuing because ‘why do you help her but never help me? The betrayal, Fe, the betrayal!’
4. Language Arts
5. Science
6. Music (he’s a piano boy in my heart) (maybe also good at violin) (a classy young man)
Adrien Agreste:
1. History (with Marinette)
2. Language Arts (with Marinette)
3. Science (with Marinette)
4. Math (with Marinette)
5. Chinese (with Marin- oh, wait, we’re done with that!) This class, along with his next, is another reason Adrien relaxed so quickly at the school. By taking Chinese at school, he was able to convince his father to stop the at-home lessons, clearing up some of his schedule.
6. Music. Same as above, playing piano at school meant he didn’t have to do it at home so much.
The Heroes:
“But salthaven, you already introduced the heroes! Envision and Viperion, remember?” Haha, as if those were the only guys I had planned?
Yeah, I had more. Four more.
I wanted the Quantic Kids to be heroes. I had three of them for sure chosen, names and Miraculi assigned to them. (Allegra was my only problem child, but I’ll explain that below.)
The first was supposed to be Allegra. I was going to make her the Fox, with the name Mélodie. I’m pretty sure that was her original hero name, back during the PV stage of this show, and I wanted to pay an homage to her inspiration. But then Félix got it, because I didn’t end up giving him the Cat (yeah, I was really salty when I started this, and I was planning to go the same route that I do in my ao3 fic, Of Patience and Pettiness, and take away the Cat from Adrien to give to Félix.), as Adrien learned from his mistakes. So Allegra waits, and Envision springs to life with Viperion.
Next would be Allan. Miraculous: Bee. Name: Mellifury, based on Mellifura (aka the Africanized Killer Bee) + Fury. He was supposed to be an unexpected storm. A dancer, he uses rhythm in a way that throws off opponents. Uses the spinning top like it's another limb, throws the game way off when first introduced.
Then we’d have Allegra. After a while, I decided that the Rabbit would be best suited for her. Messing with timelines is a tricky business, but Allegra has a knack for details and organization that would leave her cruising through her tasks with some practice. While it’s nothing musical, it would be fun to see. Name: Cottontail.
Finally, after an interesting fight that would cause Nathalie to lose the Peacock...Claude would step in. Bold and flashy, the thespian knows how to strut his stuff. But again, he’s a thespian, and theatre kids know when it’s time to hide in the shadows and stay unseen and unheard. With dark blues that can hide in the name and stand out in the daylight, Claude would become Le Paon, turning the tide and becoming a major help for the team. [At first, he dealt with some sickness, but after a talk with Ladybug, who in turn talked to Fu, the Miraculous was fixed and Le Paon could fight as easily as the rest.] He’d use sentimentals wisely, although he’d have a bad habit of monologuing as he created them.
The Ships:
The moment we’ve all been waiting for. Our first question: Who the hell was Marinette going to end up with? Well, that answer changed throughout the story.
The first choice: Félix. I wanted Marinette to move on from Agreste...and fall in love with Agreste. It humored me, and I was in love with a bunch of Felinette one shots at the time. (And, again, very salty towards Adrien at the moment.)
But then I redeemed Adrien. No problem, I thought. Marinette could choose between one of the boys...and the other would date Luka! (I mean, did you see the Instagram picture of Luka and Adrien. Luka with either Agreste would be cute, just imagine the musical moments they could have together)
But then I Akumatized Juleka, and Luka was right there...and I made Marinette fall for all three guys. So I decided “Hey, she can just date all three!” And so that’s the final choice, because I’m apparently a sucker for poly ships.
But I mentioned other ships, didn’t I? So let’s talk about those!
First: Luka with an OC. Yep, I was going to bring in a new girl. It was actually going to be one of my friends, due to a conversation we had that went as follows:
S.H. (Salthaven): So I’m thinking that I’m going to pair up Félix and Marinette. Thoughts?
F. (Friend): Okay, but what about Luka?
S.H.:  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
F.: Well then pair me up with him!
So I did. Or I was going to...but then poly ship idea happened.
As mentioned above, I also considered Luka with either of the Agreste boys. Whoever Marinette didn’t date. Again, couldn’t happen because I went for that sweet poly route.
Finally: Claude and Allegra. What can I say, they act like an old married couple in my mind!
And that’s everything! Once all the heroes were chosen, and romantic confessions set aside, the Miraculous Team was going to gear up and take down Hawkmoth once and for all. Fun times, the end, we all get a happy ending.
So I hope that makes up for my rather abrupt end to this story. Thank you all for the time you put in, reading my writings, and I hope you enjoy the other works I plan to create! Until next time. <3
