Tamagotchi Available for Purchase at 2024 Fan Expo Canada

Fan Expo Canada is the largest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime, and gaming event in Canada. This year it is hosted at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from Thursday, August 22nd, 2024 through Sunday, August 25th, 2024.

At the event Acrett on Reddit noticed that there were Tamagotchi’s for sale including the new Tamagotchi Connection 20th Anniversary and the 50th Anniversary Hello Kitty Tamagotchi Nano! There are even Summer 2024 Tamagotchi Original shells too.

No word on pricing, but if you’re at the convention be sure to grab one!

Thomas Fountain Blue

Thomas Fountain Blue, the first African American to head a public library in the United States, was also a civic, educational, and religious leader. Blue was born in Farmville, Virginia, on March 6, 1866, to Noah Blue, a carpenter, and Henry Ann Crawley Blue. They were parents of two other children, Alice Blue and Charles Blue.

Blue enrolled in Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia, in 1885 and graduated in 1888. In 1894, he enrolled in Richmond Theological Seminary (now Virginia Union University) in Richmond, Virginia, finishing in 1898 with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. One week later, when the United States declared war on Spain after the sinking of the USS Maine off the coast of Cuba, touching off the Spanish-American War, Blue joined the Sixth Virginia Volunteers battalion comprising African American soldiers and was stationed first in Camp Poland in Tennessee and later at Camp Haskell in Georgia.

In 1905, Blue was selected to lead the Western Branch Library of the Louisville Free Public Library on South 10th and Chestnut Street, the first Carnegie Library in the nation to serve African American patrons with an exclusively African American staff. The facility cost $31,024.31 to build and when completed had over 4,000 books and 53 periodicals.

In 1914, Blue opened Louisville’s second Carnegie Library for African Americans, the Eastern Branch Library. During World War I, Blue was drafted, left the branch, and was appointed the Education Secretary at Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville, one of sixteen national Army training camps created across the nation. Blue worked with Black troops who mostly had supporting and laboring roles in the United States.

After the war ended in 1918, Blue returned to Louisville, and a year later, in 1919, he was named head of the “Colored Department” for the city’s public library system and supervised eight African American assistants. The Colored Department was the first in the United States to have a staff which served multiple Black library branches.

In 1922, Blue was a presenter at the American Library Association Conference in Detroit, Michigan, where he gave a paper titled, “Training Class at the Western Colored Branch,” and led the subsequent discussion with the Negro Roundtable composed of other African American Library staffers from across the nation.

On June 18, 1925, Blue married Cornelia Phillips Johnson from Columbia, Tennessee, and they parented two children, Thomas Fountain Blue, Jr., and Charles Blue (named after his younger brother). Two years later, in 1927, Blue founded the Negro Library Conference and conducted its first meeting at Hampton Institute.

Later becoming a minister, Reverend Thomas Fountain Blue—who held membership in the American Library Association, the Special Committee of Colored Ministers of Louisville on Matters Interracial, and was a charter member of the Louisville Chapter of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History—died on November 10, 1935, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was 69.

At the 2003 joint conference of the American Library Association with the Canadian Library Association Annual Conference at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Blue was posthumously honored when the organization passed a resolution recognizing his leadership in promoting professionalism among the staff of African American libraries across the United States. In 2022, a headstone honoring Blue and his wife, Cornelia Phillips Johnson, was placed at Eastern Cemetery in Louisville by the Frazier History Museum.

The Scott Pilgrim trailer has left me really excited about what new Toronto locations are going to make it into the adaption. Pecaut Square?! In an anime?!? I haven’t been this excited since Mississauga City Hall showed up in Yuri on Ice!

(Then I realized some of the buildings in that Pecaut Square scene are too new to have been in the comic. Oops.)

My location wish list includes the Metro Convention Centre and the Ontario Place pods.

I think the pods are unlikely— they were recently used in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The Metro Convention Centre might happen, given it’s where the big local comic cons are held.

The big local anime con, Anime North, is mostly held at the Toronto Congress Centre. It’s a much less photogenic building and unlikely to appear. The con hotel, currently the Delta Toronto Airport, as a certain charm. A deep cut would be the old hotel, the dramatic and elegant Regal Constellation.

My hopes and dreams aside, I’ll probably do some location spotting threads as the anime comes out.

Only a few months old at the time, shiny GO Transit F40PH 511 heads up a westbound 9-car train of new bilevels and an APCU on the tail end, passing by Spadina Avenue just west of Toronto's Union Station. GO 511 was part of a six-unit order of F40PH units built by GMD at their London ON plant in April-May 1978, a change from GO's previous orders of freight GP40-2W units. New F59PH deliveries a decade later would result in GO flipping the six orphan units to Amtrak in 1990. 511 would see another decade of service on Amtrak as their 411, and would go on to work AMT's commuter operations out of Montreal. It last saw service on the the Saratoga & North Creek Railway (via LTEX) with another ex-Amtrak F40. The bilevel cars trailing are also new, part of the first order built by Hawker Siddeley and in service for a little over a year since introduction in March 1977. Since the first bilevel order included no cab cars, another locomotive, APCU, or old Hawker Siddeley single-level cab car had to be used on the other end in the early years. This scene off Spadina Avenue is notable in that it's under transition: the old CN steam-era freight platforms, team tracks and yard trackage east of Bathurst Street yard are still present, but truncated for the new CN Tower's parking lot (note the yellow bridge crossing the rail corridor near TTR's John St. interlocking tower). In later years the RBC's new data center (325 Front St. W), the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and CN's L'Hotel would fill much of the vacant land along Front Street in the 80's. The usual downtown office towers of the day including the TD Centre, Royal Bank Plaza, CP Hotel's Royal York, and the CNCP Telecommunications Building (151 Front Street) are quite unobscured compared to today. Bandai Brought Ringcolle! Tamagotchi Gashapon to 2024 Fan Expo Canada

If you attended 2024 Fan Expo Canada this year from Thursday, August 22nd, 2024 through Sunday, August 25h, 2024 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, we hope you checked out the Gashapon section! Bandai has confirmed, and the image above also confirms that there were Tamagotchi Gashapon present! We spy the first edition of the Tamagotchi Ringcolle rings. There might have been others too.

Bandai was also giving out free bags to those who purchased 10 tokens or more, and 2 free tokens just for visiting!
