Fandoms: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Doctor Who; Ships: Phryne Fisher/Jack Robinson, Hugh Collins/Dorothy “Dot” Williams Recced by: Chestnut_pod Backstory: MFMM is a TV series (and series of novels) set in 1920s Melbourne, in which the eponymous daredevil lady detective Phryne Fisher solves pulpy crimes with much dash and verve. Doctor Who follows a shapeshifting, time-traveling alien around a differently pulpy universe. A fusion works remarkably well, likely because the zane-factor is so high in both. Rec: This is a rip-roaring, episodic crossover in which Phryne is, in fact, a Time Lord, and sweeps straight-laced detective inspector Jack Robinson off on a transdimensional time-traveling adventure. The elan of MFMM and the sincerity of Doctor Who come through in spades, as does both shows’ penchant for lighthearted quirk. A delightful read! Content warnings: Temporary amnesia

Fanfic Recs!

In honor of Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day I thought I would celebrate by reccing a couple of fics from each of the fandoms I read/write in, because I know I am always looking for recs myself, and this lets me shine a light on some that I adore. Of course, this proved a tremendously difficult task, because there are literally so many amazing fics to choose from, but in the interest of time and space I am limiting myself to two.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

One Night In Berlin by @firesign23 I love me a good trope subversion and Fire_Sign is the master. This one is short but packs a punch and even has two follow-up fics to continue the story!

Revolution of the Times by @arlome Without giving too much away, this fic manages to combine so many of my favorite things - Jack's family, Phryne's past, Phrack at their finest - and the writing is just gorgeous.

Renegades by @ink-dust This could genuinely be the the season 3 we were all denied. The writing, story and characterizations are just top notch. 😚 👌 

The Song Remains the Same by @sholiofic​ An OT3 with Peggy/Daniel/Jack that takes a really interesting path to explore Peggy's growth from the beginning of S1 to post S2. Lovely.

HTTYD/Race to the Edge

Cold North Wind by sunflowerb A beautiful exploration of Valka's return and the consequences of her absence from her perspective. Love, love, love.

Simple Gifts by @listentoyourdragon / Ecoutez A sweet and authentic deep dive into the years between adolescence and adulthood where everything is sort of in flux and you're just starting to figure yourself out. Read it and then do yourself a favor and read the sequel which is just as amazing.

Guys! Since I am still shiny and new (and think you're all the bees knees just FYI), and just reading my way through random things eclectically here and there - how about a post with each of the librarians tip top recs for a one shot and a multi-chap? One of each, each?

Well, @viikirks, we think you’re the cat’s pyjamas for this ask! Even if it pains us all to narrow down our recommendations.

@firesign23:  For a multichapter fic, my first thought as @edeainfj‘s The Fixed Foot (2016) despite the fact it’s not a particularly long multichapter fic. I adore all of her fics–she’s one of those “Drop everything to read immediately” authors for me–and I could fill a post with just recs of her fics, but The Fixed Foot is definitely amongst my favourites. It explores the challenges and negotiations Phryne and Jack would find in an open relationship while keeping that underlying respect and love between them at the forefront. It’s challenging and beautiful and I adore it. As a bonus, the comments on the fic add a whole other dimension of discussion to it.

And after naming a short multichapter, I thought it might be nice to give a shoutout to a longer oneshot. Sing a Song of Sixpence (2016) was written for Yuletide 2016, which is one of the largest and longest running cross-fandom fic exchanges (it began in 2003!). 2016 was the last year MFMM qualified for their “small fandom” criteria. What’s interesting here is that we do not have an author to credit, as the writer made use of AO3′s orphaning option. Set three weeks after the events of 3x08, Phryne has returned to Melbourne and is immediately called in to investigate the murder of Rex Morgan, one of Melbourne’s best accountants and loathed by many; the resulting investigation uncovers long-held family secrets, more deaths, and just the right amount of flirting.

@kanste:  We are lucky to have such a lovely collection of fics – sad ones, funny ones, romantic ones and sexy ones – you name it and we probably have it.  Like @whopooh I have had a very hard time to choose just one of each, unlike her I couldn’t make it. So I decided to give you two of each. 

For my one shot I give you a funny one and a sad one. Counterfactual  (2015) by @promisesarepiecrust is the fic I always choose when I’m in need of a little heartbreak or a good cry.  It deals with the aftermath of a one-night stand. There is one specific picture PromisesArePieCrust has created, that will forever stay with me.  Whump, whump (2014) by @aljwritesphryne​ is the one fic that always cheers me up. It has Dottie, a flustered Hugh and a hint of Phrack.

My first multi chapter fic is on the shorter side with only four chapters but it has so much going on: beautiful clothes, Phrack having a sexy dinner and dessert. A More Lethal Dress (2016) by @omgimsarahtoo​. My second one is a Modern AU story that is the beginning of the YACI universe. You Are Cordially Invited….. (2015) by @aljwritesphryne​. Jack is a detective, Phryne a private eye with a huge social media following, throw in a royal wedding and you have a good read. 

@olderbynow: First off, if there are no specific rules laid out, there’s no cheating. I just want to put that out there. And then I want to show you something amazing. It’s this multichapter fic by RakishAngle: Messengers and Forfeits (2015), which is ten chapters of delicious Phrack written in that kind of style that I want to be when I grow up. It is wonderful, okay. It’s also a sequel, and you obviously have to read the first one as well. (See what I did there, Chidi @whopooh? I didn’t have to choose. Muahahaha.)

As my standalone fic I just have to push And I Do Lift My Aching Arms to You (2017) by @gaslightgallows. It’s got fake-out make-out, Archie, a Gilbert & Sullivan reference, smut that manages to be both hot and hilarious, which is an A++ smut combo. And it has one of my favourite lines written in a fic ever. If when you read the fic, I’m 100% sure you’ll be able to guess which one.

@ollyjayonline: As I lack the concentration to read a long fic my multi-chapter is a bit on the short side but size, as we know, is no guide to quality and at just over 10,000 words and a mere two chapters @ladyroxie‘s Delight Out of Loosened Soil (2016) is one of my favourites. (And because my ability to follow rules rivals my ability to concentrate I’m also going to mention @olderbynow‘s Tales of a Wayside Romance 1930 (2017) which remains the best fic I’ve never read.) For my one shot I love the passionate abandon of Saudade (2017) by @kidnthehall.

@solitarycyclistadventures: Ooh, this is a hard question. How can I choose?! There are so many writers worth checking out!! Here are some fics that come to mind first: The Fixed Foot – which has already been recommended by Firesign so doesn’t count. @promisesarepiecrust’s Phracking Fridays – a multi-chapter with very short but very sweet chapters. Some of them just knock me out. For one shot, read @ollyjayonline’s The Hunt – I want to recommend all of ollyjayonline’s fics, and this is her first one shot, although I suppose I’m cheating because it’s part of a multi-chapter story. :D Bonus multi-chapter fic: @flashofthefuse‘s modern AU, Still Holding My Heart.

@whopooh: I know wejoke about this a lot, but that is because it’s true – I am the Chidi in thisgroup, and asking me to choose just one thing is a little bit like sending meto the so called Good Place to torture me. I struggle with this, BUT – I’ll justdive in and give you two fics I have come back to several times and that hasmeant a lot to me!

My multi-chapter one is a fic that draws me into it and teases me because it doesn’t give away much of the characters’ inner emotions. This is @promisesarepiecrust’s A whole world in here (8 chapters, 2016). It is written like a play, which means we get the lines and a few stage directions, but basically we are left to our own devices about their inner turmoil, and for me, that becomes really intense. It also forces me to read slowly. The fic is focused on Phryne’s and Jack’s relationship and things that threaten to hinder it, and it has some lovely Mac and also an OC I really appreciate. Interestingly, since the form is so special, the resolution – all that pent up desire and frustration going off in a bang – is told in a prose form.

For a one-shot, I’ll say @jeneenp/Collingwoodgirl’s The Night Within Us (2016) which is so concentratedly sensual in its way of using one of theclassic tropes, to be locked into a small place together, and the heat in this is to me scorching. Also, since @ollyjayonline openedthe floodgate to give a bonus rec, I will do that too, and say that another ofmy favourite locked-in-together is Lefaym, Locked rooms (2014) and its delicious humour.

1. World Enough And Time (MFMM/Doctor Who, Phrack, 51k)

This will always be my favourite of my fics. It's the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries/Doctor Who crossover where Phryne is a Time Lady, Dot is from the past, Mac is from the future and Jack is just trying to work out what is happening. It's an AU that contains eight other AUs (including a Regency AU, a Mad Max Fury Road AU and a fake-marriage-with-aliens AU) and it represented an enormous milestone for me in my writing.

2. all the men and women merely players (Ted Lasso, Ted/Trent, Roy/Keeley/Jamie, 50k)

The Ted Lasso Station Eleven post-apocalyptic AU in which, in the wake of a devastating global pandemic, American comedy actor Ted Lasso leads a Shakespearean theatre troupe across the ruins of England. It combines my love of Ted Lasso, Station Eleven, Shakespeare and theatre, and it's probably the fic I've worked hardest on.

3. I Live And Lie For You (Good Omens/James Bond, Bond/Q, Aziraphale/Crowley, Adam/Eve, 13k)

The fic in which Wensleydale grows up to be Q. Features avocados, cats named after mathematicians, car chases in the Bentley, questionable ice-cream flavours, far too many spies at St James' Park, the Antichrist in his fuckboi era and tardigrades. I don't even like James Bond but I loved writing this.

4. The Legend Continues (Rivers of London, Michael Cheung/Sahra Guleed, 8.5k)

A closer, canon-compliant look at how a hijabi cop might have inadvertently apprenticed herself to the legendary swordsman of London's Chinatown and then started dating him. I always wanted to write an wuxia in English! Features my holy trinity of subtle Asian traits: bubble tea, passive-aggressive aunties and an original character clearly based on Michelle Yeoh. Fun fact: this fic was named after an actual Chinatown restaurant called Leong's Legend Continues, a spinoff of Leong's Legend (ironically Leong's Legend is still around but the Legend Continues has since, well, failed to continue).

5. Best Revenge Is Your Paper (Daredevil/The Punisher, Frank Castle/Karen Page, 15.5k)

In which Karen Page gets a bunch of bylines, pisses off a lot of people, tries not to fall in love with her newsmaker and fails. Kastle was the ship that brought me back to fandom after a five-year hiatus, and Karen remains one of my favourite fictional reporters of all time (the others are Trent Crimm, of course, and Hildy Johnson from His Girl Friday). It's been another five years since this fic and oh, I've had such a time.

Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day - Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Fanfic Recs

I've never made a rec list before, but I wanted to follow @aurora-australis-tumbles's example and put together a short little rec list of my own. Thank you for the inspiration, Aurora! In honor of making the first rec list that appeared on my dash today, I'm starting off my own list with one of your fics.

Friendly Fire by @aurora-australis-tumbles​ *starts giggling just thinking about it* This fic is a perfect blend of hurt/comfort and puns after Jack obtains the most hilarious injury. And the Phrack feels in this one are absolutely amazing. 🥰 Seriously. I love this fic so much that I recommended it to my mom. 😂

Speaking of fics I've recommended to my mom (yes, really), I can't make a rec list without including Kneeling at the Altar by @scruggzi​, my all-time favorite MFMM fic for personal... kink-related reasons. 😂 My mom doesn't speak English very well and she didn't realize what was going on, or even that the fic was smutty. But I promise it very much is, and it's glorious!

Also by @scruggzi, we have The Catacombs of Rylia, which I am currently reading. It is an MFMM/Doctor Who AU set on the planet Rylia whose inhabitants live in caves underneath the planet's crystalline surface. The world and the writing are absolutely beautiful. I'm a big fan of spa settings, and in this one we have underground spas and an underground ocean perfect for skinny dipping. 😏 Also, everyone's wearing a towel for the entirety of the fic.

that lucky old sun by @fitzawkwarddarcy Y'all, this is hands down the softest fic I have ever read. We all know I love to leave long comments, but nothing has ever beaten the 800-word comment I left on this 3000-word fic because I just had to squee about every tiniest detail. It is a hurt/comfort fic set in 1950. Jack's had a bad day at work and his old leg injury is acting up. Phryne takes care of him in the gentlest way possible, they share a bath, and there's even a cat. Would highly, hiiighly recommend it <3

No Big Deal by deedeeinfj An absolutely beautiful modern AU in which Phryne and Jack are college students. Jack has never had sex, and Phryne offers to sleep with him. College-aged Jack is adorable, and he's incredibly gentle with Phryne as she guides him through what she likes. Plus they're both hopelessly in love with one another. 🥰

To end the list with a stealthy self-rec, my favorite fic I have ever written is Say You'll Stay With Me Tonight. Here I tried my hardest to combine all of my favorite (non-smutty) ship tropes into one fic. Phryne and Jack spend a rainy night at Jack's bungalow and Phryne gets her period. It's full of banter and cuddling and I'm extremely proud of it.

Great tension in the Miss Fisher fanfic – for the 11th PFF

What do you say, Jack, shall we go for URST or RST this time?

I asked for help from this lovely fandom to spread some fanfic love -- asking for fics with great tension, either with Unresolved or Resolved Sexual Tension, or both.

I have gotten wonderful answers, and I will give them to you here as a contribution to PFF (Phrack Fucking Fridays) – the 11th since it was started by @firesign23 in August!

I didn’t get as many answers as last time – whether it was because the timing was bad, or the theme too difficult to choose fics for, I don’t know. But I hope to receive more during the coming week, when you see this and think “These are super wonderful fics, but where is X, Y and Z?” Just keep sending me ficrecs, and I will do a second post. And do not fear if you cannot fill both URST and RST – I didn’t mean that you should, one or both or just tension is equally fine! (check here for details and how you can contact me)

Here are nine recommendations that makes me immediately want to go and reread the fics. 

"Wake Me Up" by @edeainfj/deedeeinfj. Recommended by @omgimsarahtoo.

The whole thing, but especially this:

"Early shift tomorrow... today, that is?" she asked, smoothing back his hair. He nodded. "I didn't mean to wake you." He exhaled a laugh. "Wake me whenever you like. It's surreal, still." "What is?" "Being wanted. Like that." He traced his fingers down her spine. "Especially by you." "I wanted you long before you let me have you, cruel man," she grinned.

I love the established Phrack-ness of this fic, and yet you can tell it's still new because he's not certain that her fantasy involves him. The sex is hot, but the feelings that are around it are what makes it memorable for me.

“Here be Dragons?” by @anne-louise-fortune. Recommended by @olderbynow.

aljohnson's yaci is wonderful, and i adore it, but there are two scenes from the sequel that just always makes me all chinhands and hearteyes. first, the scene when phryne comes over after her burlesque performance, and jack is very focused on the practical side of things:

“And your thoughts on the remainder?” Phryne looked at him as if there had been nothing at all unusual about her ‘outfit’.

“My thoughts are mostly around the logistics of how the, erm….” Jack indicated towards Phryne’s breasts.

“Nipple tassels, Jack?”

“Indeed. How do they stay on?” Jack was genuinely intrigued as to how the small objects had remained perched on her breasts, covering her nipples. He had not actually been able to see anything that a gentleman should not have been able to see. He was coming to the realisation of exactly how unlike a gentleman he would like to be with her.

and then, you know what's super high on my list of favourite things? jack losing control and being run away with by his passions. (and by 'passions' i mean 'wanting to bang phryne fisher', obviously.) there's just something completely fascinating and wonderful about this man, who is always so buttoned up and completely in control of himself - except for once in a while when he's forced to look at a painting of a naked phryne very shortly after having stuck his tongue down her throat in the name of policework, or when he's been imagining saving her from poisonous spiders only to have her clothes spontaneously fall off and then she perches herself a little too cleverly on his desk - just fucking LOSE it. which, yeah...

Phryne was trying to find her front door key in her handbag as Jack slid his hand across her waist, his lips pressing butterfly kisses to her neck. “Jack!” She implored, softly. His response was a low growl. Phryne could feel arousal spiking within her. As she finally got the door open she turned to Jack, “Would you like to… oh” she failed to complete the question as Jack swiftly moved over the threshold, closed the door behind them and spun Phryne so she was pushed back against the inside of the door. He was kissing her neck, nibbling on her earlobe and caressing her hips and waist with a keenness that Phryne found intriguing. What had come over him?

She tried to speak again, “Would you like to come upstairs?”

“No time” responded Jack, pulling her hips to his, allowing her to feel his very obvious erection.

and you should probably go read the rest for yourself if you haven't already... and if you have, maybe read it again, idk?

Is this my last chance, Miss Fisher?

"Alleviate" (part of 500 words) by @firesign23. Recommended by @longlineoftvdetectives.

“You seem certain there will be another time.”

It was, perhaps, the first time she had given voice to her doubts about this endeavour. If she’d had time to plan it properly it would be another matter, but she had not; there was a fine line between adventurous and reckless, and she wasn’t entirely certain whether she had fallen on the right side. He just smiled and took another biscuit.

“There’s always another time, if you’re willing to take it.”

She moved closer, intending to make a quip about his sudden optimism, but caught his eyes, smouldering with all the things left unsaid, and exhaled loudly. She hadn’t thought it possible to want him more, but she’d been wrong.  

“Are you willing to take it?” she sighed.

I love the movement in this piece, from the long history of unresolved tension to the inevitable resolution, at what may be the last possible moment, the night before Phryne leaves to fly back to England. The passage is weighty and true but ultimately hopeful, and they decide together to take the risk of being together, despite all the uncertainties of the future. It's hard even to pick one favorite @firesign23 fic, but this one had a huge impact on me creatively.

“Hope Springs Eternal” by LemmingDancer. Recommended by @lillbilly.

"Then you'll look for him?" Hugh begged, meeting her eyes for the first time. The guilt in his guileless expression penetrated Phryne's fog. He still blamed himself for the waiting so long to look for Jack, when he'd been abducted.

"Of course," Phryne reassured him, even as a smile spread across her face. She began to sort through the pillows around her carefully, lifting the corners of each and peaking underneath. Hugh shot a mystified look at Dot, who was watching her mistress with an increasingly worried expression.

"Ah ha!" Phryne said, tossing aside a turquoise pillow.

"Uhngh," Jack protested incoherently, scrunching up his face against the sudden light. Draping one long arm over his eyes, he snaked the other around Phryne's waist. Hugh and Dot's faces were mirror images of shock and mortification.

We see them working so well together as they chase a suspect, then the banter we all love but the mood changes quickly when Jack has to remove the protection of his clothing to locate the jewels in the mud pool.

First we see Phryne being affected by handling things that are so representative of him.

She hung his hat and coats on a couple of nails protruding from the post beside her, trying not to notice they were warm from his body and smelled like spice and leather and books.

The scene below is reminiscent of the ‘tie’ scene in the last episode S2, starting as just a practical action soon surprising them with the intimacy it evokes.

Pushing up her own sleeves, she stepped forward, balancing carefully so didn't tip into the mud, and began uncoupling Jack's cufflinks. Her elegant fingers nimbly slipped a post through the slot, and she withdrew first one and then the other from his cuffs. She tucked the studs into her coat pocket, and returned to Jack's left wrist. As she leaned down again, she caught his eyes flicker from her lips to the shadow between her breasts and linger there. Her coat was open, the silk blouse she wore underneath gaping as she leaned forward.

Then Jack, already aroused, tries to calm himself: “Jack cleared his throat. Breathe, man. This is just a practicality. Nothing more. Completely chaste.”

And then his understanding of the power she has/he has given her over him: “But her skin, her hands, her fingers against his flesh... It was undoing him in a way that made him understand drowning men.”

And then his decision:

He could, he knew suddenly and with surprising clarity, stop this. He could stand, mud everywhere, words rough and wrong, and pull away. He saw that scene unfold in an instant in his mind and knew that she would play her part, if that's what he wrote.

But the bigger surprise was that he saw another scene, even more sharp, in even more depth, and all he saw in it was her. Her body, her lips, her hair spread across his naked chest. He didn't know precisely what happened in between this moment and that one, but all at once he believed it existed. And that fact made him realize he was not going to say no.

And her understanding that he is making a decision, about them.

Phryne stilled her fingers when they reached as far up Jack's sleeve as they would reach. She swallowed, and brought her eyes up to meet his, an uncharacteristic uncertainty shaking her.

As her hand drew slowly down to rest once again on his wrist, their eyes met, and Phryne lost her breath. In the many worlds she saw in Jack's blue-grey eyes, one word rose above everything else.

Yes.

I just adore this.  

The palpable tension of Angry Jack.

In Double the Pleasure, Double the Fun two fictional characters played by Nathan Page meet, Jack from Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and Henry Stokes from Underbelly: Squizzy. Jack and Phryne are together, but Jack is still angry (maybe not realizing how angry) because Phryne had slept with Henry Stokes in the previous fic. Jack's impulse to make this menage happen -- or rather, to watch Phryne with Stokes -- comes from that anger, and the fic treads a very fine line when it comes to consent. it is cracktastically amazing smut, and a lot of it packed into a relatively short fic. The URST is very high before Jack joins in, and then the resolution is explosive.

“What exactly did you plan to do with my - with Miss Fisher,” Jack asked calmly.

Henry Stokes stared Jack down, “I planned on stripping her bare and fucking her senseless on her bear skin rug,” he answered unblinkingly.

Jack cocked the pistol. And Phryne looked between the two men in fear. Long moments passed.

“Go on then,” Jack said.

“I want you, Phryne Fisher,” he said, forcing his voice into steadiness, even as her eyes made it plain that she was thinking about all the indecent things she wanted to do to him. “I want... to put you on that bed and strip you down to your skin, and know every part of you. I want to touch you, kiss you, devour you, be devoured by you—“

Her fingers on his lips stopped his litany. “Careful, Jack,” she murmured, dragging her forefinger down his bottom lip. “We’ve a long night ahead of us. You don’t want to spoil every surprise.”

As Jack and Phryne move to consummate their relationship, the nerves the two feel about the change in their relationship are expressed perfectly in character-- Jack, of course, channels these feelings into a gallant declaration of his intentions, while Phryne tries to defuse the tension with her usual charm. It's a lovely light-hearted moment in a sweet and poignant fic.

With this piece there is the inevitability: the knowing this is going to happen, we’ve been apart and we didn’t want to be and now we’re going to be together and this is happening. No talking, no thinking, just doing:

From the moment he opened his door everything was a blur of lust and months apart, love that none dared to address lingered like smoke. Lips were seized, limbs entangled. Clothes were tugged at, ripped off, discarded. Eyes locked on eyes, hands rushing to feel every expanse of skin at once. Intense kisses. Impossible to resist to kiss a neck, impatient to return to a longing mouth. Rewarded by thrilled moans.

And this I think is a wonderful contrast to Queenscliff where she thought ‘he was a policeman in her room’ and didn’t immediately pick up that Hilly was talking about him when she referred to ‘your handsome friend’: “The sight of him above her, letting go, looking so little like the Inspector and so much like her Jack, made her laugh from sheer joy.”

This whole fic is so wonderful, but there are a couple of paragraphs that stand out for their sexual tension-ness. like this one:

Jack blinked, his own thoughts shocking him a little. He’d known that he was horny—six months of divorce proceedings and a reluctance to start anything new was wearing on him—but he didn’t usually look at women as if they were meat. He was certain this woman had a personality and intellect that were just as stunning as the points of her nipples against the silk of her blouse and the crimson slash of her lips. He’d really love to find out for sure—though he’d also love to have just one night with that body of hers, much as it shamed him to admit it. Sipping at his whiskey, he shook his head at himself. He didn’t do one-night stands, as a general rule—he found them unsatisfying—but as he was not ready to jump into a new relationship at this point, he wondered whether he should reconsider.

obviously i'm a HUGE fan of the slow burn (the slower the better, tbh) but variety is the spice of life or whatever, and sometimes a bit of "let's just jump right in there and have jack want to fuck her before he knows her name" is just what the fic stew needs. or it's the chocolate with salt caramel filling after you've had six coconut ones. i don't know.

oh, but also this:

Jack fought the urge to swallow, knowing that she’d intended him to feel this arousal. Absurdly, he wanted to hide his reaction from her as much as he could. This woman knew her own appeal, but he thought perhaps she would prefer someone who didn’t just lie down and let her walk on him. Oh god, would I love to lie down for her, though. For her. Under her. On top of her. He wrenched his thoughts back to the question she’d asked, letting his lips curve in a small smile.

and in between, there's mac catching him ogling phryne... i'm not going to quote that, because it seems like an appropriate teaser for the two people in this fandom who haven't already read this fic. which they should do. because it's AWESOME. and funny. and hot. and awesome.
