I’ve been playing Immortality (2022) and I’m obsessed with the nuance it manages to hold and how it successfully threads the needle on fairly specific and complex topics while the story itself is so entirely nonlinear. The gameplay style of sorting through randomized clips ensures that the developers have fairly little control over what order the player finds the scenes in.
I’m not finished with it yet. I have no idea how far I am in the game lol. But like six hours in, at least, I’m really intrigued by the way it delves into art as a concept; is it consuming, is it fulfilling, is it worth the sacrifices made to create it, or the social evils that can surround it, etc. I particularly like that the three fictional films it centers on are interesting but simultaneously fairly low brow.
I’m also enjoying the way it gets into women’s role in art, and the gendered constraints of how they are historically portrayed within a narrative (often by men) but also when it comes to being an artist and the questions of exploitative practices, and lack of respect or recognition.
And the game actually employs its immortal, unaging protagonist in a way that intelligently explores these themes.
There’s something really interesting happening with her three main film roles and how her first character (literally Matilda from the Monk by MG Lewis) is basically an entirely stylized fantasy. A destructive and seductive force of nature, with no interiority of her own, who only exists to corrupt the titular monk. Then her second character is a standard femme fatale, a model who kills her artist lover and again… corrupts the strait laced and moral detective protagonist who’s trying to solve the murder. This character is explicitly acknowledged to be a more grounded and real role, she’s closer to a real, flawed person, but she’s still basically a vector for titillation and is vilified for it. By the third (dual) role, decades later, she’s progressed to being a genuine protagonist. But for that, her character is split into a very literalized virgin and whore dichotomy. These sides are symbolically fused by the third act of this fictional movie with the virginal character’s death, with the whore stepping into her place and finally becoming a fully realized person. But even that comes with the deliberate framing of something unachievable without a death and rebirth occurring. Without her being sanded down to a sort of palatability by it.
I’m also very interested in these films being in-universe lost media that was never actually completed or widely released. And how that may tie into its themes of recognition and the importance or lack thereof of having an audience.

MBF-P03D Gundam Astray Blue Frame D – A Review
Looking back over the kits I’ve built over the years, I think this is the longest one has been in some sort of active build without being some kind of over-the-top mod. Started in April of 2022 and finished in May of 2023. It’s not because of it being particularly hard or complicated. No… it's from something far less fun. My shoulder just isn’t what it used to be.
That said… this very pointy boy was one heck of a fun kit to make. = ) Here’s my review of the MG Astray Blue Frame D.
Tumblr media
So… I Think it was either my birthday or the Christmas of 2019 that my friend gave this big ol' box. It was the fist time I've had in my possession a proper Master Grade kit. It was the MG Astray Blue Frame D – one of the few Blue Frame Astrays that Bandai like to release and the something that wasn’t just another Red Frame like they REALLY Like to release.
I’m a fan of the Astray line and a sucker for them Blue Frame so this was a very nice surprise for me. It took a while to finally get around to it but, a couple of days before my birthday in April of 2022, I decided to start in on it. I’ve built 1/100th sized kits before and I used to build model planes with my Dad back in the day so neither the size nor the amount of parts really threw me. No… it was my shoulder that got me.
I’d start working on the kit for a night and, by the time I had the arms or the torso built, my right shoulder (My drawing arm) would Burn like some kind of weird twist on a G Gundam special attack. Instead of it telling me to defeat folks, it would angrily tell me to stop. I’d pack things up in the box and park them on my scanner – a tool I need regularly to, you know… scan the artwork for my comic – and that's where it lived until I either needed my scanner or I felt up for working on it again.
‘Cause nothing keeps a kit on your mind like having to physically move a box of parts out of the way just about every week. = P
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Smash cut to yesterday. I'd just finished up a recent Story Bit and I’m taking a break to do stuff like research things, practice drawing an old character in my Comic style and just trying to check things off my list. I also finally got my hands on the unobtaniaum that is the MGSD Freedom Gundam – a kit I swore I would start until I finished the Blue Frame. And that’s how we got here. So what can I say about this build… Well, MG’s are definitely a different beast from the HG’s and SD kits I’ve been building. It really has more in common with the older military kits I built with my Dad as a kid than the ones I’ve built as an adult. Everything is so nicely detailed that I’m almost tempted to go through this thing an paint it. Thanks to the excellent color separation on the parts that could have that done for them, I wouldn’t have to paint much.
The part that kills me a bit is there is So Much that’s hidden. There are inner frame details and on parts like on the inside of the armor that are pretty much just there for one person and one person only: The one putting the kit together. It's just a joy to make. = )
The flexibility is pretty great, too. Like my SDCS kits, it can balance on one foot without drooping or needing extra supports. In fact, the only time I could put this thing into a pose that it couldn’t handle was when I added the Striker Pack on the back. Even then, it was only a few non-standard poses. If I was hard up for it, it comes with a simple solid stand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Astray Blue Frame D is a Very pointy kit. Plenty of swords and stabby bits. It is one of those kits that kinda’ requires some extra touches. Aside form the traditional metallic camera and eye stickers (which don’t quite make sense 'cause the eyes and head camera are a lovely clear green), it comes with some nice and simple dry transfers and a sheet of mediocre stickers for if you want to go the MG-style warning stickers galore. Although I plan to come back and do some panel lining later, I’m probably going to avoid the stickers. The dry transfers look to be mostly for the weapons system and I have better water slide warnings than what it came with.
All in all, this was a fun build. If you dig the Astray kits and want something with more swords than the fanciest of Exias, I highly recommend it. It has the articulation you’d expect from a more modern Master Grade and a level of detail that is just fun to deal with. = )

2022 Cheapish, Chinese Electric Car - MG5
James and Kate - The EV Team
We have two MG5's, but the older pre-facelift models. They've been ace, saved us money on tyres, maintenance and are 1/4 of the price of an equivalent fossil fuel car to run. So we've bought another, but the facelift model, and we're hoping it's as good as the others(..)
P.S. Serious question: How long will we have to wait when it will be possible to buy MG also in Eastern Europe and the Baltic States...?

ANTIAMNESIC EFFECT OF MESUA FERREA (L.) FLOWERS ON SCOPOLAMINE-INDUCED MEMORY IMPAIRMENT AND OXIDATIVE STRESS IN RATS
Research Paper of Dr. Tina Saldanha
Title: ANTIAMNESIC EFFECT OF MESUA FERREA (L.) FLOWERS ON SCOPOLAMINE-INDUCED MEMORY IMPAIRMENT AND OXIDATIVE STRESS IN RATS

Journal details: Advances in Traditional Medicine, Springer online (2022)

Description:  Mesua ferrea Linn. flowers have been used in Ayurveda as a brain tonic and as an ingredient in memory-enhancing formulations such as Brahma Rasayan and Chyawanprash. However, this ethnomedicinal use has not been investigated scientifically. This study evaluated the effect of the ethanolic extract of Mesua ferrea flowers (MFE) on memory in scopolamine-induced models of cognitive dysfunction. MFE was administered to rats (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o) for a period of 14 days, after which amnesia was induced by giving scopolamine (1 mg/kg, s.c) on the 14th day. Piracetam (200 mg/kg, p.o) was given as a positive control. The models employed to assess memory in the rats were the T-maze continuous alternation task (T-CAT) and novel object recognition test (NORT). Pretreatment with MFE ameliorated the memory deficit caused by scopolamine; which was evidenced by a significantly greater relative proportion of spontaneous alternation percentage in the T-CAT, and a significant increase of discrimination index in the NORT. Further, MFE significantly inhibited anticholinesterase activity in the brain, elevated the levels of reduced glutathione and catalase, and decreased malondialdehyde and nitrite levels in the brain. The results of this study show that MFE exhibited significant anticholinesterase and antioxidant activities in scopolamine treated rats, which could be the possible underlying mechanism of its memory-enhancing activity and of its ethnomedicinal use as a brain tonic.

Chinese Car Makers Making A Global Impression
While the South African automotive market sees the introduction of new models from Chinese automakers almost monthly, there are hundreds of other brands on offer from the Far East nation. Here are four taking the world by storm.
Tumblr media
These car brands are already quite affordable compared to other car brands, but if you shop used cars for sale in Mossel Bay - you’ll pay even less.
MG
If it sounds like that familiar name and badge, it is! While officially of British origin, MG has become one of the most globally recognized car brands, predominantly under SAIC ownership since 2006. In 2022, it emerged as the most popular “domestic” brand beyond China’s borders. Its potential lies in its capacity to manufacture appealing and highly competitive electric vehicles suitable for both developed and developing economies. Notably, in the first half of 2023, MG secured its position as the fourth best-selling Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) brand in Europe, surpassing established mainstream competitors like Renault, Peugeot, and Hyundai.
With nearly a century of history in the automotive industry, MG’s recent success can be attributed to SAIC’s stewardship. In fact, MG’s sales have skyrocketed from a modest 3 500 units in 2013 to approximately 450 000 units just last year.
The MG story from this millennium is potentially one of the most calculated, utilising a familiar European name to gain market share in its continent of origin while all production and profits are handled by SAIC. Like many in this list, it is unlikely the formerly British automaker will arrive in South Africa any time soon, it changing to an electric vehicle-only brand by 2027. For now, their lineup includes EV, PHEV and ICE models.
BYD
Ceasing production of internal combustion-powered vehicles last year, BYD is the only automaker on this list that has recently expanded into South Africa’s ranks. Offering the Atto 3 for upwards of R768 000, the brand serves as one of the most affordable entries into the world of electrification. In Europe, it remains relatively modest, but the company has been making significant strides in other global markets. It has established itself as one of the world’s most rapidly expanding automotive brands, primarily due to its diverse lineup of plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles.
Did you know: BYD stands for ‘Build Your Dreams’, and was founded in 1995 to make electric batteries. Since then, it has merged into the gap of creating EVs through its subsidiary BYD Auto which we have here.
BYD occupies a unique niche, straddling the line between the mainstream and premium segments. This positioning enables it to penetrate other markets like Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, where not everyone can afford high-end electrified vehicles. Impressively, BYD has introduced six production models since January 2022. More impressively, the automaker also boasts an all-electric supercar that has some impressive tech and ludicrous performance.
Lynk & Co (Geely Group)
Geely? Yes, that Geely. They existed in South Africa for a brief moment before exiting, once more. Despite this, the massive conglomerate owns Geely Auto, Geometry, Lynk & Co, Livan, Proton Cars, Volvo Cars, Polestar, Zeekr, Lotus Cars, Lotus Technology, Smart, London Electric Vehicle Company and Radar Auto to name most. While some of these are joint ventures, this is nonetheless an impressive portfolio.
Their subsidiary Lynk & Co boasts a Chinese-Swedish heritage. Founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2016, the focus of the brand is on internet connectivity and innovative purchasing platforms and targets a young professional demographic. This means that their lineup of EVs and PHEVs is a fairly common sight in Europe. There are plans to expand into the US, too. While also moving towards an electrified future, the brand could potentially arrive in South Africa. With a dealer network of Proton and Volvo already existent in the country, this might offer the next viable entry point for a Chinese automaker.
NIO
Electric only! With an impressive and extensive product lineup, NIO is often referred to as the “Chinese Tesla” and has emerged as one of the Asian nation’s prominent players.
NIO’s potential strength lies in its technological prowess, particularly in battery performance and software capabilities, as well as its innovative battery replacement program. However, as a premium brand, it has yet to establish a global presence and requires additional time and awareness to secure a substantial foothold in the European market. That said, it is unlikely we will see the automaker in South Africa anytime soon.

MG4 Extended Range Test Driven: The Best Value EV On The Market?
MG has a reputation for producing great value cars. The MG ZS EV and its Long Range version drew a new line for affordability, followed by the MG5 EV and its Long Range version. In 2022, the MG4 EV set yet another benchmark. Now there’s an updated version of the MG4 called the Extended Range. It takes what was great about the original model and makes it even better. I spent the last week putting…

New MG4 review: Volkswagen MUST respond!
Auto Express
The new 2022 MG4 is a wake up call for electric car makers.  (..)  This is British brand MG’s ‘ID.’ moment. While the Chinese-owned firm has dabbled with EVs in the past – including the impressive affordable ZS crossover and MG5 estate – this MG4 family hatchback is where the company’s push with its next generation of models really begins. That’s why, in almost every sense, you can see parallels with Volkswagen’s ID.3 – hence this being a crucial car for MG. For a start, both models are competing in the same sector and aiming for the same buyers: everyone from city dwellers to families who might use the MG4 as a second car, as well as company car drivers keen to cut their Benefit-in-Kind tax bill. There are even more similarities when you analyse the key figures. The MG4 EV is based on an all-new platform for the brand, called MSP, which stands for Modular Scalable Platform. Like the ID.3, it employs a rear-mounted motor producing 200bhp, which is fed by a 64kWh battery in this top-spec Trophy Long Range version for a claimed range of 270 miles. Opt for the more affordable SE Long Range and this increases to 281 miles. Meanwhile, all MG4s have 150kW rapid charging, so a 10-80 per cent top-up for the bigger battery takes 35 minutes. Use a 7kW home wallbox and it’ll take nine hours to fully replenish. As Nicola Hume finds out, the MG4 is a credible EV competitor, irrespective of the low asking price(..).
P.S.  Volkswagen's engineers, accountants, shareholders and labor union need to go home and rethink a bit about how VW builds electric cars and why they are so overpriced...Electric cars actually have far fewer mechanical parts than ICE vehicles, and many manufacturing processes can be automated and assembly labor reduced. It's increasingly starting to look like legacy automakers whining about the cost of producing electric cars and the endless justifications for high prices are complete bullshit...
