MGS has a very tight color language, especially obvious in V and PW, but it's present throughout if you know what you're looking for. The main ones that get played on are red, yellow, and blue.

Red is kind of obvious. Violence, etc. Ocelot is typically wearing a lot of red, like in this image. In V, characters who are doing/about to do violent acts are often back-lit with red lights that seem to come from nowhere.

In PW, red incites dissonance by foreshadowing Paz being a double agent, while *also* painting her as an innocent little red riding hood analogue. But I digress.

Yellow is also kind of a no-brainer. It's typically associated with allies, general good-heartedness, and maybe a sense of naivete. Think about Amanda and Cecile in Peace Walker.

Kaz even *changes his outfit* from yellow ascot (and blond hair) to red tie and beret post-GZs incident.

Blue is a little harder to tie down. It's best described as deception (including self deception), "something isn't what it seems." Sometimes it's used for grief as well. Think Paz's whole room's lighting, the blue butterfly, or the way Snavid is described as a blue rose-- pretty, technically biological, but unnatural.

The lens flares in V are used a LOT to toss a flash of the appropriate color behind someone. Here we have Ocelot saying "yeah boss I'm over it dw" and the lighting going

Which. We know he's lying. We know because of the way he acts for the next THIRTY YEARS. We know bc when he has a senior moment (a multiply-hypnosis addled senior moment, but still) and mistakes snavid for john, the first thing he does is plant a kiss on him.

The way I read it, there isn't a world in which bosselot is reciprocated when it comes to romance. It's a fun dynamic to explore, but I think Ocelot wouldn't care enough to ever try making it work (because he knows it won't), and even if he did he'd never let himself be vulnerable enough to. And Snake just straight up doesn't care about having any close relationships, especially after Snake Eater, Kaz being kind of an exception. It's a lot more nuanced and maybe I'll write my thoughts on them properly at some point but yeah. I don't think they've ever opened up to each other much or spent a lot of time together. They care, but not like that.

Paz Paz Paz I love Paz so freaking much it's unreal. I have an au where she goes back in time after her death in GZ and has a month to fix everything and find out who the other spy is together with Kaz. I have an au where she lives and they build Diamond Dogs together and torment Ocelot for nine years. I wish they gave her more time and spotlight in canon but that's what imagination is for. She is such a tragic and interesting character, I think about her so much.

Also the fact that Venom probably knew he's not the real Big Boss before the Truth, it drives me nuts and I yell more about it here (and here I guess. and in my head all the time) in case you're curious.

how many mgs games do you own/have completed? I have 2, 3, peace walker, V, and Rising! :)

Ahhh!! I’ve been doing my best to play all of them I can.

- I have not played the pixelated 1 and 2 that came with the master collection.

- I have played 1, 2, 3, V, Rising, PW, and GZ.

- I have not yet completely finished peacewalker or sons of liberty however have been spoiled for both (I just haven’t had a chance to get around to em…)

- I don’t have access to a ps3 and supposedly it’s near impossible to emulate mgs4 so I’m going to have to wait till master collection no. 2 😔

So, out of morbid curiosity, I listened to Skull Face's ten-minute-long-ass "What do you see?" Joker-esque speech from GZ... and while it the tape itself didn't have anything super incriminating in it other than like, I don't know, basic torture (I think a guy gets waterboarded or something) — like something else I can't stomach to watch — I have a few things to say about it.

1. This man is gaslight and gatekeep. Like Jesus fucking Christ, the amount of forced empathy under false pretenses he postures having for the sake of either gathering information or for the sake of luring his interogees (?) into a false sense of security, is honestly a little astounding. (Which, in itself, isn't necessarily something foreign to his character, hence his proclamation of "I don't want to do this. I'd rather not have to ring the bell," when interrogating Code Talker.) I would say he is two-faced, but he regularly accentuates that he doesn't have one. So it would be disingenuous to draw such a comparison.

2. The voice acting really isn't as good as the voice acting James Horan provided in the sequel, "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain." Like, in the tape I cherry-picked to watch, it's not... terrible? But if I said it wasn't leagues below Mr. Horan's performance in the latter release, I would of course be lying. Skull Face simply sounds more menacing in the latter, despite the much more mature tone of "Ground Zeroes" in comparison. Which is strange, since "The Phantom Pain"'s depiction of Skull Face is easily the more comical, and unserious of the two. I also find it off-putting because he sounds so much younger in that one, LOL, which I suppose makes sense, given that the tapes take place around 1977-1978... ish?

I will say one thing about Skull Face's design in "Ground Zeroes," however: I like him without the mask. Very off-putting and disturbing in appearance, likely befitting of the... *cough* tone, of that game... or lack thereof. Other than that, I don't really have much to say about it.

i don't really have much on peace walker, but i know bigmonsteras posts neat info about it! there is a japanese pw scenario book, but along with mgs4's i think it had a limited release and it's really hard to get hold of :( i did buy the novel a while back but haven't really read any of it, but if there's any extra paz stuff in there i'll be sure to post it in the future
