Baby Steps

I am the person in my group of girlfriends who has been the biggest holdout in terms of making no permanent body modifications towards transitioning.

While the world seems to have an impression of people transitioning in a two year time frame because That Is How It Is Done, the large majority of trans women I know have made modifications slowly, over time. A couple of decades in some cases. If I had a dollar for every time I have heard one of them say "But it looks great as a girl or as a guy!", I could probably buy a house or pay for my own full transition. Laser hair removal, pierced ears, a bit of facial feminization surgery, even some estrogen... (as in: “estrogen makes my skin soft and smooth - and that looks great as a girl or as a guy!”)

It’s been more than 15 years since I came out to myself and went to my first gender conference. And in all that time, so many have transitioned partly or fully. So many have gone from part time to full time. And I keep not doing anything.

But I bought myself an IPL device for Christmas. And I’ve been trying it for a while, and it is shockingly effective. Uncomfortable for a sec, but not really painful. And now I’ve gone and bought myself a laser hair removal package to make it as permanent as possible.

When I realized I was going to start making permanent modifications to my body, I broke down and cried. A lot. I have seen so many head down this road, and how happy it has made them even when they have lost so much at the same time (homes, families, money, prestige, careers, church, etc).

More than that - it feels like I am losing the fight, like I am finally giving in.

But you know, it really does look great - as a girl or as a guy :)
