Note
can you have a microperf hymen and not be intersex?
Microperforated hymens are generally not considered something inherently intersex by most of the community, although who you ask might have different answers. It's something that can definitely be comorbid or symptomatic of intersex variations. Microperforated hymens are typically considered a ""normal"" variation of 'female' anatomy (but at what point is a variation intersex and not, really?)

Some intersex flags! (Part 4)
And now, part 4! Here are parts one, two, and three.
Please read (and reblog) our intersex guide. It is so important to understand intersex people, their bodies, and their health!
All of these flags are based on the Zero-V (vaginal agenesis) and Micro-P (micropenis) flags by @thirdsexmanifesto.
Urethral Agenesis
Tumblr media
The orange represents the urinary tract. The yellow circle crossed out represents incomplete or absent urethra.
Vaginal Hypoplasia
Tumblr media
The black triangle is inspired by how demisexual/demiromantic flags are set up, as to imply that the vaginal entry is still present, but only partially.
Imperforate Hymen
Tumblr media
The X over the circle is meant to represent the hymen blocking the entry.
Microperforate Hymen
Tumblr media
The X over the circle is meant to represent the hymen blocking the entry. Unlike the imperforate hymen flag, the X doesn't cover the entire circle, which is meant to represent how the vagina is not fully covered.
Cribriform Hymen
Tumblr media
The circle with the multiple Xs are meant to represent the small entrances in the hymen.
Septate Hymen
Tumblr media
The circle with the slash through it is meant to represent the septate hymen stretched across the vaginal entrance, splitting the entrance in two.
Vaginal Septum
Tumblr media
The symbol is a combination of the TVS, obstructed hemivagina, and LVS symbols. This flag is for those with any of those three variations.
Transverse Vaginal Septum (TVS)
Tumblr media
The symbol is meant to represent the tissue running horizontally across the vaginal canal.
Obstructed Hemivagina
Tumblr media
The symbol is meant to represent the hemivagina within the vaginal canal.
Longitudinal Vaginal Septum (LVS)
Tumblr media
The symbol is meant to represent the tissue running vertically across the vaginal canal.
Labial Hypoplasia
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first flag is when both of the labia are absent. The second flag is when only one of the labia is absent.
Clitoral Hypoplasia
Tumblr media
The little black triangle represents the small clitoris.
Clitoral Aplasia
Tumblr media
The X over the triangle represents the lack of clitoris.
Penile Agenesis
Tumblr media
The X over the triangle represents the lack of penis.
Congenital Buried Penis
Tumblr media
The triangle under the line represents the penis buried beneath the skin.
Aposthia
Tumblr media
The white wrapping around the end of the triangle with the X overtop it represents the lack of foreskin.
Microorchidism
Tumblr media
The small circle with the minus symbol represents the microtestes. The large circle surrounding it represents the typical/average teste-size.
Cryptorchidism
Tumblr media
The black line represents where the teste is expected to be. The black circle being within the grey, away from both the pink and the line, represents the teste being elsewhere within the body.

Note
would you consider a microperforate hymen intersex, every argument i have seen about it has come across very dsd-adjacent language (so tired this ask might not make sense)
Hi anon!
So standard disclaimer that I am not the authority on who counts as intersex. I'm happy to share my opinions and explain what I think, but there are probably people out there with different opinions than me and that's okay. Part of this is also going to be about your perspective and how you view your own experiences.
When I think about the definition of intersex, the three main parts of the definition of intersex are:
a variation in chromosomes, gonads, internal reproductive organs, genitals, or hormones
This variation of sex traits lies outside of what is typically considered "male" or "female", and is impacted by intersex oppression/compulsory dyadism.
This variation of sex traits is lifelong, either present from birth or develops later in life, and is not caused as the side effect to a medication or by another temporary cause.
Intersex is a social/political identity that developed as an umbrella term to allow for people with similar experiences to connect and organize together because of the way that society categorized and treated our different variations. It's not a static definition with clear boundaries--it's a definition that shifts depending on context, new discoveries, and different societal dynamics. (if people are familiar with disability theory/models of disability, i think about it pretty similarly to those discussions about the definitions of disability.) It's an expanding definition that looks to be inclusive, so my definition of "who counts as intersex" is a LOT broader than most doctors. At the same time, it's also clear that not everyone is intersex--obviously most people are perisex, and at some point there has to be a line. Where it gets complicated is that that perisex/dyadic people also have a lot of variation in sex characteristics as well as various hormonal and reproductive disabilities. It's not like every perisex person has identical bodies and sex traits, and it's clear that there are some cases where reproductive health conditions can cause it to feel more borderline.
There are a lot of examples of variations in sex traits that do not meet the definition of intersex. Here are some examples:
people have all different penis sizes.
people have different amounts of body hair.
people have different levels of hormones even within the "typical" range.
people have different breast sizes.
some people are circumcised while others are uncircumcised.
There are also lots of examples of hormonal and reproductive diagnoses that are not intersex variations, even though they impact things like internal reproductive organs or hormones. Here are some examples:
diabetes is a hormonal condition, but insulin isn't a sex hormone and it doesn't impact sex traits.
Endometriosis impacts periods, uterine tissue, etc, but doesn't cause a variation of sex traits outside of the sex binary in a way that's impacted by interphobia.
Menopause causes hormonal changes, but those are not intersex, because those are considered a "typical" change within the sex binary.
Infertility is caused by lots of different diagnoses and impacts reproductive function, but doesn't cause a variation of sex traits outside of the sex binary in a way that is impacted by interphobia.
Some people with these kind of hormonal or reproductive diagnoses might have some overlapping experiences with intersex people that can be a really beautiful example of solidarity. People with diabetes also have to go to endocrinologists, and we might have similar complaints with endocrinology and our rights as patients. People with endometriosis might share tips with intersex people about how to deal with our painful and atypical periods. Intersex people might also be infertile, and we might be able to provide each other meaningful support in that way. I know some people with certain diagnoses that describe their diagnoses as "intersex adjacent" because of the amount of experiences that are similar, even if they don't face the same type of intersex oppression and don't identify as intersex.
So, how does microperforate hymen fit into all of this? To me, it seems like microperforate hymen more closely fits into the category of general reproductive health conditions, rather than an intersex variation. When we look at the three parts of the intersex definition, microperforate hymen is congenital and is a variation in genitalia, but it isn't a variation in genitalia that lies outside the sex binary and that is impacted by intersex oppression. That doesn't mean that you can't face challenges, that you can't face difficulties with doctors, society, ableism, judgement, etc. It just means that it seems like microperforate hymen is more understood as a reproductive variation that still is considered within the "typical" range of non intersex experiences.
With all that being said, I still think that if there are intersex resources that make you feel seen or provide you with the kind of support that's helpful for you, you should absolutely still feel free to access those resources and participate. I know several people with "intersex adjacent" diagnoses that sometimes participate in intersex spaces, we share resources with each other, and just overall have some really beautiful solidarity. I absolutely don't want to invalidate your experience or make you feel like you're wrong for wondering this, because I think there's nothing wrong with wondering what counts as intersex or seeking for support and community with intersex community.
The way I think about defining intersex is really shaped by my understanding of intersex as a community term that allows us to connect with each other and organize with each other, and also allows us to identify the particular ways that we are made vulnerable and oppressed. This can be really vital, especially for a community that is forcibly isolated in so many ways and who has been so often denied the ability to build an identity at all, when we're just told that we have to use DSD terminology and can't live as intersex.
I think that if the current sex binary wasn't so strict, if intersex oppression wasn't so violent, if we got to a point in society where we had abolished the sex binary, if there was more education, if there was actual intersex liberation--the line between intersex and perisex would continue to blur and maybe even disappear altogether. There would just be an understanding that literally everyone has a certain degree of variation in our sex characteristics, and that the sex binary and "biological sex" is a myth. But we don't live in that world yet, and there is still a society based on the sex binary that tries to eradicate the group of people who fall outside of that. So intersex still exists as a coherent and useful term for that group of people.
It's really important to me that we talk about and use the term "intersex" in an inclusive and expansive way that embraces self diagnosis, understands there are unlabeled intersex variations, doesn't just go off medical lists of "DSDs" and leaves room for people to self identify as intersex. If someone tells me that they are intersex, I will never interrogate them, ask them to prove it, or challenge them about it, even if they have a variation that other people generally categorize as another type of hormonal/reproductive disability rather than as intersex.
I hope my thoughts on this make sense. Other intersex people, feel free to add on your perspectives--my way of thinking about it is only one perspective! And anon, please still feel free to come to this blog with other questions or if you need resources, regardless of how you identify, we're here for you.

yippee. so. I want to talk about AEXS because nobody knows about it and this is a very popular intersex blog. anyway you know me as the aexs guy which is awesome. hi its me.
ANYWAY! so AEXS/Aromatase exess syndrome/congenital hyperestorgenism/congenital estrogen dominance etc. exactly what it says on the tin. I'm generally mullerian so I don't particularly know what it's like in Wolffian people, but I'd assume it's pretty similar to estrogen-based HRT.
So i never knew i had it or even that it was considered intersex for years because all of the symptoms I just thought were normal for "females" even if they didn't do upkeep, because everyone I knew shaved and took showers every day etc.
so what hyperestrogenism can do is suppress body hair growth, (I barely have any and my mom has absolutely none). causes some chafing which sucks. so I would say if you never have to shave and still don't grow any hair, look into that.
also, i barely get acne. like at all. I don't even really wash my face or anything.
Enlarged breasts also happen sometimes, though I didn't really get those. which is nice.
so those seem like typical perisex variation traits but wait! there are more!
early puberty. I got my period around 10, like the summer after 5th grade. Also, irregular/heavy periods- I had awful PMDD that made me suicidal, as well as I needing to buy the biggest pads they had from like. my second period onwards. I was on menstrual suppressants before most of my peers even like. knew what periods were.
And on to the genital specific stuff! (tw for description of that)
So for a while I thought I was just sensitive because I could never get a tampon in. It just hurt way too bad. Then I was like hey, this might be vaginismus? nope. turns out I have like. three hymen variations and some type of vaginal hyperplasia. I'd get it if you didn't consider a singular hymen variation intersex- but like three at once? I'd place myself solidly on the agenital spectrum because my hymen (if that's what it is) is far too thick to break without a lot of damage. Not to mention I have no clue what's behind it anyway. All I know is that I can have periods. Unsure if it would be safe to have them every month, but. I used to describe it as "hitting a wall" because that's. exactly what it was actually. I'm guessing that it wouldn't be sensitive because the tissue is just. too thick and doesn't have more nerves.
Plus! endometriosis! I am a firm beliver that a lot of people with endometriosis actually have some sort of hormone variation like AEXS. there are only like 30 people in medical literature with aexs- and like, come on. if PCOS is so common there's clearly more than that. so I'm spreading the word!!!
okay aexs guy out!!!!!
So I don't have TOO much to add— besides hello AEXS guy I Know What Who You Are /aff, and a couple comments that miiiight be helpful.
1. PCOS may not be As Common as diagnosed, because incompetent doctors looove slapping the label on any person with a vagina and/or vulva that seems to have any intersex traits. Like, at all, apparently. I've heard from someone else that they knew somebody who got the PCOS label slapped on them by a doctor... when they had CAIS. AKA, no ovaries! For a diagnosis of exclusion doctors REALLY love using it and completely disregarding its criteria.
2. You miiiight wanna look into what a vaginal septum is? It might be a transverse vaginal septum, if it isn't a microperforate hymen or some similar hymenal variation (I would include imperforate but you're able to have blood flow escape, so something along those lines)

Hii Nat!! I have a strange medical question
So basically ever since I got my period I've always had issues with putting in tampons, originally I used to put it straight up but was then told it had to be inserted at an angle. either way it was always really painful no matter if i did it right or not (on one occasion i had my mum in the bathroom with me while i tried putting one in and burst into tears because of how badly it hurt)
I recently got a referral to a gynaecologist and saw her earlier this month, i explained everything i pretty much put on here just a little more extensive and with a separate issue of birth control. Anyway she ended up doing a swab test for thrush and it still hurt so bad to the point i nearly cried again. afterwards she explained how my hymen is potentially an 'imperforate hymen' and that the thrush hasn't made it any better either and that when i go in for my operation for my IUD she'll check and potentially break it for me.
The only issue is that after the appointment i did an extensive search on google, which i know i technically shouldn't trust as its unreliable in some cases, but an imperforate hymen would mean that the likelihood of having a normal menstrual cycle is slim to none and so i'm wondering if it is definitely an imperforate hymen or is there a different type that she meant and i simply misheard her.
I know this probably makes no sense but im just a bit confused at the moment. I would ask her but she hasn't called me about my upcoming surgery, which still hasn't been booked, nor about my results from my failed attempt at a swab test
Hi, my love! That totally makes sense, and I get why you would be confused. You’re absolutely right that a true imperforate hymen would block menstrual blood from coming out, so it’s unlikely that’s what she meant if you’ve had regular periods. More commonly, people can have a microperforate hymen (a very small opening) or a septate hymen (extra bands of tissue that make the opening narrower), which can cause the kind of pain you’re describing with tampons or exams.
It sounds like she was using “imperforate” a bit loosely, but either way, she seems to think there’s some extra tissue making things more difficult for you. If she’s planning to check and possibly remove it during your IUD procedure, that could help a lot.
As for your results and surgery scheduling, it’s frustrating that she hasn’t followed up yet — maybe try calling the office and asking about both? You totally deserve to have clarity on what’s going on.

hey you don’t have to answer if this is personal but do you have any tips for pain-free sex with vaginismus? i’ve struggled with it since college until i switched to just exclusively having sex with women. i’d bleed the first time i was with a new partner but it was 1,000x better than when i was with men. but with my newest partner, while it’s never been painful with her, i’ve bled each time. i’m worried my vaginismus is getting worse. i know you’re not an expert, but if you have any advice that you feel like could help i’d love to hear it!
happy to give some tips!
will preface this by saying that while i had a pretty severe case initially (like a mini tampon was excruciating) i’ve been very lucky in how my body responded to treatment! i think for me there have been three big things that got me to this stage:
the biggest was being really consistent with my dilating. i went through a phase where i was super motivated and basically did it every day for 6 weeks and that really helped in a physical sense but also in a mental sense where i was able to rewire my brain to have more positive feelings towards penetration.
the second was literally just fucking relaxing. like becoming cognisant of exactly how tense my pelvic floor constantly was and making a real concerted effort to just like. unclench. i think this was the main thing that’s helped me maintain my progress even now that i rarely dilate
and finally just dealing with the mental blocks i had towards sex specifically in terms of some body dysmorphia and feeling a lot of shame in my body as a sexual being
also if it’s something you have access to and are comfortable with having a doctor check everything out is never a bad idea. thankfully i have a beautiful gp who i was able to go to and basically confirm that it was a pretty textbook case and nothing to do with like a microperforated hymen or anything like that
hope literally any of this was helpful! it really is an absolute bitch to deal with but there is hope!!

(Feel free to ignore this ask if you don’t feel like answering or your are not comfortable answering, I’ve just been throwing this question around different intersex information/awareness blogs to see different perspectives/answers.)
So after doing research for a couple of years and engaging within the intersex community I believe that I may have a collection of traits that could be connected to being intersex. This ultimately pushed me to access my past medical records to see if I could find anything worth noting. In the records, it initially stated that when I was born (the day of) that I had “normal” genitalia. But four months later, I guess they found something different. There were more physical examinations conducted stating that that I have “immature external genitalia”, and that’s where the examinations around my genitalia ended. What could this mean and could have any relation to being intersex/is it intersex?
hi! i believe you asked this question to one of my mutuals and i agree with hys answer. it could mean a lot of things on its own and it depends on other factors at play. by itself, this being noted on someones chart as an infant would not automatically be intersex, especially due to the lack of information as to why, and other factors would have to be considered.
as for what this could mean, there is technically a lot of possibilities. the most glaring one would be imperforate or microperforate hymen in someone with a vulva, or micropenis in someone with a penis. it could also reference clitoral agenesis or aphallia. it is used by some doctors as a cover for ambiguous genitalia, but i am unsure if this is the case since your chart noted normal genitalia prior. basically, what it could mean is up to that specific doctor, so the fact its noted it quite unreliable.

Also turns out I (may) have a microperforate hymen??? Just found this out a week or so ago?? This makes so much sense bc penetrative sex has been next to impossible for me, even with dildos. I can barely get 1 finger in there, not that it's enjoyable in the slightest. I don't have insurance at all or a job rn so i can't get a proper diagnosis let alone surgery to make my vagina normal. I haven't looked properly IN my vagina in my entire 22 years of life until the other day and it was bc I was shaving with a big mirror. 🙃 makes sense why tampons never worked. Could literally never get a dildo to enter me either

Dermapen against other rejuvenation processes
In the search for healthier, more youthful skin, innovations in the field of dermatology and aesthetics continue to surprise with effective and non-invasive solutions. One of these innovations is the Dermapen, a revolutionary device that has transformed the way we approach skin rejuvenation.
Tumblr media
Dermapen vs. Laser
Mechanism of Action: Dermapen: Uses fine needles to create microperforations in the skin, which stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. Laser: Uses high-energy light to vaporize the superficial layers of the skin or heat the deeper layers, stimulating cell renewal and collagen production.
Main Indication: Dermapen: Suitable for acne scars, fine wrinkles, enlarged pores and stretch marks. Laser: Ideal for treating sun spots, hyperpigmentation, deep wrinkles and improving overall skin texture.
Recovery Time: Dermapen: Recovery time is generally 1 to 3 days, with redness similar to a mild sunburn. Laser: Recovery time varies depending on the type of laser, and can be from a few days to several weeks, especially with ablative lasers.
Side Effects: Dermapen: Redness, mild swelling and temporary peeling. Laser: Increased risk of hyperpigmentation, prolonged redness, swelling, and in rare cases, scarring.
Results: Dermapen: Visible results after a few sessions, with continuous improvements for several months. Laser: More dramatic and faster results, especially with ablative lasers, but with longer downtime.
Dermapen vs. Chemical Peels
Mechanism of Action: Dermapen: Microneedling that creates microchannels in the skin to stimulate regeneration. Chemical Peels: Application of chemical solutions that exfoliate and eliminate the superficial layers of the skin.
Main Indication: Dermapen: Effective for treating scars, fine wrinkles and enlarged pores. Chemical Peels: Indicated for spots, irregular texture, fine wrinkles and acne.
Recovery Time: Dermapen: Rapid recovery from 1 to 3 days. Chemical Peels: Depends on the depth of the peel; Superficial peels require a few days, while deeper peels may require weeks.
Side Effects: Dermapen: Minimal, with temporary redness and slight swelling. Chemical Peels: Redness, peeling, and in rare cases, changes in pigmentation.
Results: Dermapen: Progressive improvement with several sessions. Chemical Peels: Visible results after one session, but several may be required for optimal results.
Tumblr media
Dermapen vs. Radio Frequency (RF)
Mechanism of Action: Dermapen: Microneedling to induce collagen. Radiofrequency: Emits radiofrequency energy to heat the deep layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production.
Main Indication: Dermapen: Acne scars, fine wrinkles, and skin texture improvement. Radiofrequency: Skin tightening, wrinkle reduction and non-surgical lifting.
Recovery Time: Dermapen: 1 to 3 days. Radio Frequency: No significant downtime; possible slight redness.
Side Effects: Dermapen: Temporary redness and slight swelling. Radiofrequency: Temporary redness and slight swelling; rarely burns.
Results: Dermapen: Visible improvements after just a few sessions. Radiofrequency: Gradual results, with notable improvement after several sessions.
Choosing between Dermapen, laser, chemical peels and radiofrequency depends on individual needs, skin type and specific rejuvenation goals. The Dermapen is excellent for general skin regeneration and the treatment of scars and enlarged pores, with minimal recovery time. Laser treatments offer faster, more dramatic results, especially for pigmentation issues and deep wrinkles, but with longer downtime. Chemical peels are effective for exfoliation and improving skin tone, and radiofrequency is ideal for skin tightening without significant downtime.

Wait is microperforate hymen an intersex condition? I have that, and I was put on hormones as a preteen, then offered surgery and told to dilate but I just never did it. I didn’t think that counted as intersex but i see my experiences as at least similar to that
so i'm not intersex so i'm not the BEST person to ask, but i have seen it referred to as that yeah! the first person that came to mind was someone on tiktok named sydney but again i'm no expert
