Haiku: Dog day afternoons and the micro-season
Photo courtesy of Wikipedia Cicadas buzz like busted streetlights, broadcasting summer’s death rattle. –Sarah Torribio >>last post <<next post My use of the phrase haiku has bothered me a bit since I learned that, ideally, the form should be focused on nature. More specifically, I hear, a haiku should celebrate, commemorate–or use as a launching pad–the various micro-seasons. I’ve always…

Seasons in Onmyodo: Kanro: Sneaking Away, Diplomatic Immunity and When the Kami Come Back!
Tumblr media
Starting with October 8th, the traditional Japanese Season of Kanro begins. Like all of the seasons, Kanro is further divided into three microseasons, each with a different effect on gameplay.
Kogan Kitaru
With the wild geese returning, summer has officially been left behind and the cold starts. This is a time for sneaking away for some intimate warmth. As such, any of the Travelers in your adventuring group who share Secrets (a form of Drama) leave the group for the duration of Kogan Kitaru. Note: this might even end the game if there are no Travelers left on the Journey!
Kiku no Hana Hiraku
A symbol of nobility, the beautiful Chrysanthemums bloom. During this time, the Nobles in your Group cannot be Attacked! (I call it a form of diplomatic immunity)
Kirigirisu to no Ari
The sound of the nearby crickets create a rhythm that keeps everyone happy and productive. Remembering the pleasure in simple things. This is when any previously Enlightened Travelers (who are now Kami) descend from Heaven and rejoin their old comrades temporarily.

There’s 4 schools of thought for adapting Nademonogatari
1: 6 episode OVA or microseason (something maybe like tsukimono or hanamono)
2: 3 60 minute movies like kizumono
3: 1 movie but maybe they break it down into episodes for tv broadcast
4: they don’t

microseason: geese (poem)
Today, the migrating geese passed over.
I steeled my dizzy eyes to watch them,
Rooted my feet in the mountains at the end of the lane,
Holding to my other half.
Three large flocks straggled through the clear sky,
Honking, something reminiscent of order;
Two smaller groups kept tighter form,
Holding to traditional vees;
One single goose flapped to catch their friends:
I don't know if they all knew each other
But they were all going the same way anyway,
Holding to a shared vision.

hiii <3 so lately i've been thinking a lot about 72 microseasons (which are subdivisions on the traditional japanese calendar based on the changes in the nature) currently it is the season of safflowers blooming..! i really like this system it makes me pay more attention to the nature and reminds me of the beautiful experience of just .. being ..???? how is your day sweetheart??? <3
I just searched this up right now and it looks so lovely??? this is such a lovely system, it gives me some kind of hope that I should live to go through all the seasons!!
my day is going well so far! I stayed up till 1 and made some sketches while also re-reading the most cringiest fanfiction that I used to read years ago sobsob. I woke up to my mom and grandmother laughing and I finally feel like I'm home

折り紙と百景 (Origami to Hyakkei) English Translation
youtube
Origami and A Hundred Sceneries (0)
After the Rain
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
これは やがて 辿る世界を 祈る私の 願いの詩 これは 今じゃ 悔やんでばかりの 弱虫な恋歌
For the world that will soon follow,
This is my poem of wishes. (1)
But right now, this is a weakling’s love song,
filled only with regret.
花を 風を 飾るあの日々を 覚えていますか 貴方のくれた 百余の景色を 今は お暇しても
Those days that decorated the wind with flowers,
Do you remember them?
The hundreds of sceneries from you,
now, even if I take my leave
四季折々の夢でありすように 色を変える 折形の様 ひらり落ちて 貴方のそばへ 寄り添えるなら
For the existence of dreams that sway from season to season,
I change colors, like folding shapes (2)
I will drift down to your side,
if you wish to nestle close.
ずっと ずっと 気づいていました 貴方のことに 叶わぬことに 人も 実り 麦秋至 知れたことでしたね
I noticed long, long ago
the things that you could not attain (3)
People too, are crops of early summer (4)
But it seems that goes without saying.
あれも これも 間違いだなんてさ 言わないでいてよ 枯れたる草も 蛍となる日を ひどく 待ち望むように
“this” and “that” are all mistakes
Please don’t say things like that
The day that even wilted grass becomes a firefly,
I will wait eagerly for that day.
貴方の行く畦道を照らせたら この未来も 笑えているような 叶わない恋を知った 知られずひとりで泣いた
If I could light up the path you tread,
Even this future will appear to smile
I knew it was an unattainable love,
without knowing, I cried alone.
そんなふたつの声は交わらない 絶え間なく四季は去った 忘れられないまま夢になってしまった 悪戯な恋と ただ一枚折って
Those two voices do not mix.
The unending seasons have gone,
yet in their unforgettableness became dreams.
With this mischievous love, fold one sheet (5)
貴方のくれた 貴方の景色を 今は お暇しても 四季折々の夢で会えますように 色を変える 折形の様
what you have given me, the scenery that belonged to you,
now, even if I take my leave.
For the sake of meeting in the dreams that sway from season to season,
I change colors, like folding shapes.
ひらり落ちて 貴方のそばへ 寄り添えるなら
I will drift down to your side,
if you wish to nestle close.
Translator’s notes: (0) For 百景, a hundred sceneries is the literal translation, but it often refers to famous scenery/places known for good views. For instance you may see a list like “Japan’s Hundred Sceneries” that lists out good sightseeing spots.
(1) Generally 詩 refers to poems. However because Mafumafu uses the “uta” pronunciation, I’m not entirely sure if this is referring to a poem or if this kanji can be used for songs as well. I’m like 98% sure this means poem here but idk
(2) 折形 is the kanji for “origami” the Japanese art of folding paper that you probably know. However, Soraru uses the pronunciation “origata”, essentially pronouncing the two kanji separately. 形 on its own basically only means “shape” or “form”, but 折 seems like it can mean folding or an occasion (like a single-time event). I ended up choosing the translation “folding shapes” since it makes more sense and is more on theme but I just thought this was kinda interesting.
(3) Ok for most lyrics that utilize this rhythm I interpreted as one unbroken thought, since they all seemed to make the most sense that way. Breaking this one up still creates a coherent and on-theme idea though, so just to keep any possible nuance, pretty sure this line can technically also be interpreted roughly as “the unattainable ‘you’”
(4) To be honest, I don’t know if I translated this correctly. Translating the parts individually, it would be 人も = people too, 実り = harvest/crop, and 麦秋至 is best described as one of 72 “microseasons” observed in Japan, when wheat ripens. It spans from May 31- June 5, which is technically before summer by western standards, but I called it “early summer” due to it occurring after 立夏 (can be translated as “the beginning of summer”)
(5) 折って also means to break, but given that 一枚 uses the counter for sheet-like objects and also to stay on the origami theme I chose to go with fold.

The Secret Lakes in Onmyodo!
One of the many 'secret' features often found throughout the Tani Cards in the game Onmyodo are Lakes. These are standalone bodies of water unconnected to the Rivers. (fairly easy to spot!) Keep an eye out for the Lakes because they can lead you to a Special Item: a Mirror! Like the other Special Tani Features in the game, having 3 of them visible in your Journey History (even if they are not adjacent) will allow your group to immediately gain the related Special Mirror Item! Mirrors have many uses, especially with having the ability to frighten off any Ghost or Kaika Yokai! In addition, Special Items like Mirrors are sometimes required to defeat some of the more powerful Yokai in the game. GAME TIP 1: if you are on a Quest to defeat the almighty Orochi, a Mirror is one of the Items you will need! GAME TIP 2: Be careful when approaching the microseason Tsuchi Uruote (starts on July 29th) for you will Lose 1 Traveler each day you enter a Tani without a Lake!!! GAME TIP 3: If the Fisherman is traveling with your Group, all Travelers' Traits will be increased by 1 while in a Tani w/ a lake!

Can fashion ever be sustainable?
Tumblr media
youtube
Fashion accounts for around 10% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, but there are methods to lessen the impact of your clothing on the environment. The fashion sector is responsible for around 8-10% of worldwide carbon emissions and nearly 20% of wastewater. While the environmental effect of flying is widely recognised, fashion consumes more energy than aviation and shipping combined. Clothing has extensive supply lines, making it impossible to account for all of the emissions produced by creating a pair of pants or a new coat. Then there's the question of how the apparel is carried and disposed of when the consumer no longer wants it. While other consumer items face comparable problems, what makes the fashion business so problematic is the rapid speed of change that it not only tolerates, but promotes. Consumers are pressured to acquire the latest things to keep on style with each passing season (or microseason). It's difficult to imagine all of the components that go into making a garment, but consider denim as an example. According to the UN, a single pair of jeans takes one kilogramme of cotton. Because cotton is often produced in arid settings, manufacturing one kilo takes around 7,500-10,000 litres of water. That is approximately ten years' worth of drinking water for one individual. There are techniques to make denim less resource-intensive, but in general, jeans made from cotton that is as near to its natural form as possible require less water and harmful procedures to manufacture. This translates to less bleaching, sandblasting, and pre-washing. Unfortunately, this means that some of the most popular varieties of jeans are also the most difficult to wear. Fabric dyes, for example, contaminate water bodies, wreaking havoc on aquatic life and drinking water. Furthermore, the flexible elastane material woven into many fashionable kinds of tight jeans is created from synthetic materials derived from plastic, reducing recyclability and increasing the environmental effect.
Tumblr media
Levi Strauss predicts that a pair of their classic 501 jeans will emit the equivalent of 33.4kg of CO2 equivalent during its entire lifespan - almost the same as driving 69 miles in the typical US automobile. A little more than a third of those emissions originate from fibre and fabric production, with the remaining 8% coming from cutting, stitching, and finishing the jeans. Packaging, transportation, and retail account for 16% of the emissions, with the remaining 40% coming from customer usage (mostly washing the jeans) and landfill disposal. Another research of 2% elastane jeans manufactured in India found that generating the fibres and denim fabric generated 7kg more carbon than those in Levi's analysis. It implies that using raw denim goods will have a lower environmental effect.
youtube
However, by glancing at the label, you might find more strategies to reduce the effect of your jeans. Certification programmes such as the Better Cotton Initiative and the Global Organic Textile Standard can assist consumers in determining how environmentally friendly their denim is (though these programmes aren't perfect - many suffer from a lack of funding, and the complex supply chains for cotton can make it difficult to account for where it all comes from). Some manufacturers are also working on ways to lessen the environmental effect of their jeans' production, while others are researching methods of recycling denim or even jeans that degrade in a matter of months when composted. The most popular fabric used in clothes is not cotton, but the synthetic polymer polyester. According to Lynn Wilson, a circular economy specialist who is focusing her PhD study at the University of Glasgow on consumer behaviour connected to garment disposal, "65% of the clothing that we wear is polymer-based" globally. Polyester fibres in our garments utilise around 70 million barrels of oil every year. It's impossible to avoid the things, from waterproof coats to delicate scarves. Part of this is due to the ease of cleaning and durability of polyester. It's also lightweight and cheap. A polyester shirt, on the other hand, has double the carbon impact of a cotton shirt. A polyester shirt emits 5.5kg of carbon dioxide, but a cotton shirt emits only 2.1kg.

Everything Changes Always in Waves
Everything Changes, Always in Waves https://archiveofourown.org/works/44857597 by Toomanywastedwords This piece will take place over the course of a year - quite literally. It is based on the 72 microseasons observed by the Japanese. The story centers around Shiro who has uprooted his entire life, searching for something he can't quite name but that feels a lot like contentment, and Keith, who wasn't looking for Shiro or the complicated feelings he brings with him. A lot of it takes place in the woods, as Keith is into plants and Shiro is a budding bird watcher and I fucking love trees. It will update every five to ten days or so, sometimes with a piece from each of their points of view. I had thought about waiting to post until I had several already completed, but the spirit of the project is to live in, and to appreciate, the moment, so I will be posting as they are completed. This will end up explicit but it's going to take time to get there, that slow burn tag ain't no joke here.
