can u recommend some bands? i think i like ur music taste and i am terrible at finding music
ty :)
of COURSE I can <3 you’ve probably heard of some of these, but maybe there’ll be some you haven’t! I don’t know what you already like, so… here we go :)
Hozier. Yeah this was always going to be first on the list I’m currently listening to basically nothing else! He’s an Irish folk/soul/blues/etc idk musician who uses a lot of religious and mythological themes in his lyrics and has a lot of songs that include social justice commentary.
The Amazing Devil is a folk rock band with an incredibly unique sound. Their songs are incredibly emotional and have an awesome fantasy vibe going on—plus there’s two singers, and they often sing independently from each other, which is something you don’t see often!
Good Morning Bedlam is a bluegrass band that I’ve gotten into recently! They’re sort of like… a mix of the amazing devil and the crane wives?
The Crane Wives, while we’re at it, and
The Oh Hellos. they’re fairly similar and I don’t have a ton to say about their stylistic differences, but they’re all definitely worth checking out!
Florence & The Machine. Most people have heard of them but I always like to recommend them anyway
Alec Benjamin, if you’re into softer indie music! He has a lot of different styles of lyrics, but his voice is consistent, so he’s great to listen to if you’re looking for that sort of variety.
Chxrlotte doesn’t have a lot of music out, but I’m a big fan of the music she has released, including the ones about Good Omens! The others are more angsty which I love too.
The Family Crest is an orchestral indie pop rock band, which blows my mind. I can’t believe orchestra isn’t a more utilized tool in popular lyrical music, because they do it so well.
Good Kid is actually my brother’s favorite band, and I love them too. They’re also indie rock, but they have a very distinctive style and are easy to get into! Plus they haven’t released a shit ton of songs like some other artists, so it isn’t overwhelming to explore their discography.
Jonatha Brooke is an artist I only know about because my mom liked her music a lot in the 90s, but she’s got a super nice voice and has some awesomely relatable lyrics. I especially recommend her album Ten Cent Wings!
Midlake is a super melodic folk rock band. I’m obsessed with their album The Courage of Others, which has a melancholy vibe that’s super easy to get lost in.
Palaye Royale is harder rock than anyone else on the list so far, but they’ve got an awesome style. Unique voice and definitely darker themes in their lyrics.
Tears for Fears is a pop rock band that I love because my dad does. (My parents are musicians—I trust their music taste).
Toad the Wet Sprocket got their name from Monty Python, but PLEASE go listen to the Architect of the Ruin EP. You will not regret it. Also the song Something’s Always Wrong is like… entrenched in my very being.
Elbow is a band that I never see in fandom circles, but they’re definitely not obscure. Check out their album Little Fictions! They’re kind of like Midlake.
Will Wood ranges from chaotic and fun (The Normal Album) to absolutely soul-crushing (in case I make it)! Sometimes even both at the same time!
(I would’ve also put Paramore, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and other rock/pop punk bands I like on there, but I assumed you already know them.) (If you were looking for harder rock or metal, let me know, because this list is not that.)
If you want more genre-specific recs or even album/song recs, don’t hesitate to ask!! Music is the fuel of my soul.

9/18/23.
After years and years of waiting, "Albion" is finally here. Tim Smith, the musical genius behind the first three Midlake albums has finally completed his first album as Harp (North Carolina via Denton, Texas).
"I Am The Seed" is the only song currently available from the LP. Bella Union.
I know I sound like a broken record, but if you like Harp/Tim Smith/Midlake you should really listen to Hollow Hand.

Tabi's 2023 Spotify Wrapped
It's been a while since I been on here. I forgot I had this thing. May need to kick it to get the gears going again... Anyways, I come back with a long form post about my 2023 Spotify Wrapped. I did not expect this to come out at all. I forgot this thing existed despite it being a big deal for music listeners worldwide. Though today, I review my year of listening to tons of new artists and albums.
Top Songs

My top songs! Let's go from ascending order. - Sender has been an addictive and hypnotizing track for me for a while. I love the bass arpeggio that plays throughout the track, and the layers of instrumentation that play with each other on this track. I have wrote a deeper review of Pinback's Summer in Abaddon here. Great track on an album with equally amazing and catchy tunes too. - A deeply personal track for me is I'm Still Your F** (censor bcz idk tumblr rules). Broken Social Scene as a whole feels very personal to me. Their pretty and juvenile indie rock cuts through my heart. I'm Still Your F** cuts deeply. It's a painful track to bare, but it truly makes me understand who I am as a person. Broken Social Scene is for the people! saoooee - King Fish Pies is a phenomenal song. I get so mesmerized by the 2 chord progression, the instruments that come in and out, and Tim Smith's great vocals. It's so cathartic. And it all comes together in this beautiful, loud climax. If I ever needed to fill my head, I used this song. - Pot Kettle Black is such a great rock tune. It's a track I consider "fun". A beautifully written rock tune with hints of country. I used this track when I needed a up-lifting, hype song, though the lyrics may not be so much that. - I became so obsessed with Trainer. I garnered 41 plays on this song since April. Every minuscule detail about this song is beautiful. Beginning, middle, end; especially the end. This track was everything to me. It still feels like the first time every time I listen to it. So good. Thank You Pinback.

Wow, Pinback! Plus some extra infos for y'all. Sort of a surprise and not for me. If I did the math correctly, I was in the top 175 listeners of Pinback; nice. I have talked about my praises about them and the feelings they give me. Let's go for #1! Amazing duo I am grateful to listen to. I have always been a Radiohead and Kikuo enjoyer since 2019-2020. Both very special artists to me that will never leave my conscious of music. Wilco and Midlake are new listens for me. I was obsessed with Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Midlake's Bamnan and Silvercork. Every year's gotta have a phase which I'm not happy shows up, but this time I am happy with how the top 5 came out.
Overview I am happy with how my year came out. No matter who you are, if you care slightly about Wrapped, then you care A LOT about how your top 5's look. I think this year came out perfectly, showing my favorites, habits, and what I found this year. Let's go on for another year!

1/19/24.
Hollow Hand (Brighton, England) recently released an excellent LP on Los Angeles based label Curation Records. Max Kinghorn-Mills somehow got Tim Smith (Harp/Midlake) to lend his vocals to one song.
"More Blood on Brighton Beach" answers the question - "What does Hollow Hand sound like live." Start with "Heaven Just Watched" so you can immediately know how hard this band rocks. Then go back from the beginning (I bought this, so I'm enjoying all 13 tracks). Listening to this, I can see why Brent Rademaker released the last Hollow Hand record. Live there are echoes of Beachwood Sparks and The Tyde.
This is released on cassette via Brighton based label Cosmic Ocean. To tell the truth, I'm embarrassed with how big my cassette collection is. I rarely have the opportunity to listen to my cassettes. But I just had to own this - I'm assuming I'll never have the opportunity to see Hollow Hand live.
