Theory: the butterfly at the end of The Priory of the Orange Tree is Kwiriki.
Kwiriki was known to take the form of a butterfly, and at the same time as Tané  notices the butterfly, we find that the stitches in her side have opened, and she’s bleeding.
Previously in the book, Tané recalled climbing a mountain and getting the overwhelming sense that Kwirki was both ‘with her’ and ‘within her’
We know that when Tané was a child, her parents put the jewel in her side to keep it safe. I think that when that happened, Kwiriki took the form of a butterfly and slipped inside too, perhaps to keep the jewel safe, or to keep Tané safe, or both.
Then at the end of Priory, the jewel has been removed from Tané’s body, the Nameless One is defeated, and Kwiriki no longer needs to be so close to Tané to protect her, so he slips out again. When Tané thought of Kwiriki as being ‘within her’ he was literally within her; in her side, along with the jewel.

Illumicrate’s Roots of Chaos set made me literally cry by putting my favourite quote on the back:
Tumblr media
“To be kin to a dragon, you must not only have a soul of water. You must have the blood of the sea, and the sea is not always pure. It is not any one thing. There is darkness in it, and danger, and cruelty. It can raze great cities with its rage. Its depths are unknowable; they do not see the touch of the sun.”

That illustration is glorious *__*

Here together with the Day of Fallen Night one

Also the naked covers fit together, how cool is that?
Bonus for the Waterstones copy. I’ve seen other signed endpapers before but this is my enchanting favourite:

The Broken Binding set is apparently still available too, if you want it

The Priory of the Orange Tree - Samantha Shannon
3.5/5 - sapphic romance, too long, underdeveloped MC, unnecessarily florid prose
mild spoilers below!
I went into this book really wanting to like it. Which is why I am more than a little disappointed to report that I found this book to be ... fine. The highs were high, but the lows were quite low, which averages out to a good but mediocre novel for me.
Starting with the highs, Ead and Tane were both, conceptually, fascinating characters and I liked the journeys that each of them took throughout the book. Ead's romance with Sabran was enjoyable to read. I could feel the connection and the tenderness between them. The world-building was fine, but the process by which people gain magic was really interesting.
And now for the lows. To begin with the obvious, this novel was too long. I do not mean to say that 800 pages is too many for a novel, as I have read many a long book that keep me coming back for more, but the pacing in this book is abominably slow. Imagine my shock when I look to see how many pages I have left after reading chapter after chapter of court intrigue only to find that I was only halfway through. And this is personal preference, but I didn't even find the court intrigue all that intriguing. This book would have been better served by being two 400-page books.
The pacing issues are exacerbated by the fact that Shannon seems to need to insert two paragraphs of description between every line of dialogue and give painstaking recreations of every room. I am usually very bad at picturing characters at all and I succeeded in this book only because she repeats full character descriptions at least once every 100 pages.
I also found her prose left something to be desired for me. Sentences were long and unwieldy and incredibly florid. I think the intention was to allow the reader to sink into the novel by using this writing style, but for me, it consistently threw me off my rhythm.
Additonally, I knew very little about the content of this book before reading it. When I began, I believed that this would be a novel split in two halves, one focusing on Ead and the other on Tane. While Ead got plenty of screentime and I feel I got to know her very well, Tane felt extremely underdeveloped. By the time we reach the end of the novel, it doesn't feel like she's gone through any particular character arc and what changes we do see seem unearned because we haven't seen much of her, which was especially disappointing because I thought she was one of the most interesting characters. She rides a dragon and we don't even get to see all that much of it.
Frankly, I got the impression that Shannon wanted, initially, to write something that was equally balanced but simply did not have anything interesting to say about Tane. This resulted in the two "sides" not even meeting or having even a vague connection before the last hundred pages of the book. Which, again, reads as poorly paced to me.
Finally, I didn't appreciate the recurring theme of "monarchs are good, actually" that crops up throughout this book. There is not one single normal person in this world. Even the ones who appear to be normal and who've worked to get into this position (Tane), end up being nobility-by-blood by the end. Having even one character that was an average figure would have really deepened the cast for me.

I finished Priory of the Orange Tree!
[image description: four heads of characters from Priory of the Orange Tree, each with their name written in lowercase English cursive above them. There is also a random scribble.
Ead has a round face, messy curls that end above her shoulders, heavyset eyebrows and a line of freckles across the bridge of her nose. She is staring off with an angry/determined look.
Arteloth has on oval face, big eyes and ears, a long nose and prominent collarbones. He has a beard and a ponytail of dreadlocks hanging over one shoulder (I know on page 670-something it says he has short hair but I drew this on page 650-something.).
Margret also has an oval face (though less broad) and big eyes and ears. She has a broad nose and many mini-braids, which hang in front of both ears and over both shoulders. She is smiling softly.
Tané has a square face, sharp eyebrows and prominent collarbones. She is wearing her hair in a prominent topknot. She is glaring. end image description]
