1. What period of history do you enjoy learning about?

Early medieval times, I feel like we didn't learn enough about that in school (or I wasn't old enough to fully grasp it). Also, just about any historical era of whatever place I'm living at, up until the 1930s.

2. Who is your favourite fictional character and why?

Mary Lennox. I found my tag rant about her and am just going to put it here, sorry :D

She was neglected at the end of the book:

It begins with 'when Mary Lennox was sent to Misselthwaite Manor, everyone thought she was the ugliest child they had ever seen', and ends with 'and by [Mr Craven's] side as tall and proud as any Yorkshire lad - Master Colin!'.

And don't get me wrong, Colin's character arc is important and wholesome. But Mary - Mary is the main character of the book. Her arc is even more impressive. She is the driving force behind Colin's too!

And what began as a story about an unloved and unloving little girl learning to love and be loved, just like a garden that is finally being tended to after ten years of neglect - while still being allowed to grow wild ('it wouldn't seem like a secret garden if it was tidy') - then turns into Colin's self-improvement show. They literally start running laps and doing exercises (I understand why! Colin's muscles are underdeveloped and Dickon wants to help and it's GOOD that they do that! But it's a bit of a derivation).

Ironically, Colin kind of does what Mary was afraid of - he takes over the garden. He plants a rose there. It's his now. I mean, it was always his. His mother. His heritage. And all that.

But! - and the 1993 film addresses this so well - 'it wasn't wanted' says Mary, and she means the garden but also herself. SHE did that. SHE went into the garden. SHE dug herself and Colin and her uncle and the roses out of a ten-year darkness and loneliness.

At the end of the book Mary barely plays a role (as I presume she would have irl, what with Colin being the heir and her the orphaned cousin just living with him).

At the end of the film though. Mr Craven realises that she feels overlooked and abandoned and unwanted again, and he tells her that it was her and hugs her and - ugh, that scene makes me cry.

Kudos to Caroline Thompson, Agnieszka Holland, John Lynch and Kate Maberly there.

3. What do you order at a café?

A cappuccino. (I don't actually drink coffee (variations) unless I'm at a café, isn't that weird?)

4. Libraries, botanical gardens, or art galleries?

5. Do you have a favourite film soundtrack?

Harry Gregson-Williams's soundtrack for Prince Caspian has accompanied me on many, many Autobahn kilometres. :D

the long black veil - johnny cash (still in my loving mr cash era and this song is so gentle and heartbreaking, and the bit of laughter in the recording from folsom prison..... johnny cash humanized prisoners not just in songs that were primarily about the prison system, but also in stories that seem to almost accidentally be about someone who ended up in prison. it's beautiful.)

re. advertising your novel with fandom terms: Netflix literally adds terms like "Slow Burn" to describe their stuff, so don't be shy about using them for certain contexts

Plan B-Fehl könnte man sagen 😌 und genau deshalb merkt man sich die Namen von Leuten, Evie!! Außerdem zum Thema Le… La.. Lu? den Depp halt der sie da gelassen hat - rufen… ganz einfache Lösung: Ohren zuhalten, Augen zu, Typ rufen und sofort den Befehl aussprechen (KEK - klar, eindeutig, kurz) und dann vielleicht noch die Luft anhalten (sicher ist sicher) und schon haben seine Hypnokräfte keine Wirkung mehr MIT LINKS MACH ICH DAS Für die Zukunft sollte sie vielleicht ne geschüttelte Flasche Sekt als Sicherheit dabeihaben… Dann muss sie nur noch gut zielen

Na, er hat sie ganz oft liebevoll berührt und dabei ist ihr immer ganz wunderbar warm geworden, also, von seinem Körper in ihren geflossen, und... ...das wird nicht besser, was? 😅 Dabei sind das gar keine Euphemismen oder verschämte Umschreibungen, sondern literally das, was passiert ist.

That does include Margaret Hale and John Thornton. And since I already wrote a line in Liminal Spaces like "wouldn't it be weird if Margaret had to explain to Nick why she brought Thornton to the Higgins' New Year's Eve dinner, haha" -

I fall out of love like the sun sets for the night, violent and inevitable.

The chill is creeping up my spine as I watch the sky turning blood red like my fingers are by the devotion that is slipping through them like a rope; the silhouettes of our days work turns into black holes in front of the burning atmosphere. Soon all of us will be gone, and nothing will bring it back. Then the night begins, and its dark and cold and will harden my heart and sharpen my mind, until I have both learned and forgotten.

Only when the horizon turns into soft pastels, starting to illuminate the wasteland of my previous tries I can start again. Finding someone to walk through these ruins I only remember occasionally, building something new on this centuries old battlefield. Until the sun will start to set again.

1. are you named after anyone?

My first name resembles my big sister’s, my second name is my godmother’s and my third name is my mother’s and her mother’s second name. Am I going to share them here? Nope ;)

2. when was the last time you cried?

I marathoned “Anne With An E” recently and bawled my eyes out every 30 minutes. I also cried for some personal reasons the other night.

3. do you have any kids?

No, and I don’t want to have any.

4. do you use sarcasm a lot?

Not really. I find it quite rude and unkind and easily misunderstandable sometimes, and so I tend to avoid it nowadays even more. Especially if I’m not very familiar with the person’s / people’s taste or their understanding of that kind of humour.

5. what’s the first thing you notice about people?

Hmm. Probably the way they move and carry themselves? Like, what’s their demeanor or way of existing in the space they are. Are they approachable, relaxed, confident, threatening or meak etc.

6. what’s your eye colour?

blueish-greyish-greenish with a darker outer ring and light amber inner ring. I like them, although describing them sounds a bit pretentions, lol. But on the other hand, I know so many people with definitive one-coloured eyes that it would feel weird and untrue calling my eyes just blue or grey and so on when compared to theirs.

7. scary movie or happy endings?

Not a fan of scary movies, tbh. They make me jumpy afterwards xD Some elements are fine, but pure scary/horror films are not my thing. Happy endings that rise from the plot and feel natural and not forced are nice but not necessary. I just like to have some hope at the end of the movie... or more like, I’m tired or watching films that milk the emotions through desperation and hopelessness or shocking splatter/violence.

8. any special talents?

uh... I’m quite good at making weird noises and imitating sounds/voices?

9. where were you born?

Northern Finland (but not Lapland)

10. what are your hobbies?

Making all sorts of crafts and art things, like cards, paintings, knitting, sewing, little wooden crafts, ceramics, etc. My favourite thing is also coming up with organizers that I then forgot to use xD I just need to do something with my hands to unwind the stress and create something.

11. do you have any pets?

No :| (a cat or two would be nice in the future... or a flock of jackdaws or crows to look at and interract with as sort of neighbours)

12. what sports do you play/have played?

A long time ago I played some floorball, later did some karate and kickboxing, but nowadays I’m just walking, skiing and so on... I have never been a sport’s person, tbh.

13. how tall are you?

163 cm, a little shorter than the average Finnish gal :)

14. dream job?

If I were honest, some kind of illustrator/artist.

15. favourite subject in school?

Geography, (and other related sciences). Learning about phenomena in nature, and how to read the environment and landscapes, maps and human behaviour and interractions with their habitat, how things are connected in all kinds of levels and ways etc... that was fascinating.
