I’m 𝓒𝓱𝓲𝓱𝓪𝓻𝓾-𝓬𝓱𝓪𝓷 and I know some knows me already from my KNY fanfics! But here I am! Exploring Migi to Dali as I had seen a comment that there are only few fics for this wonderful anime.

As what I've said before, I will only write for adult Migi and Dali as I am not comfy writing about minor boys. So here we are!

» As you know how emotional your boyfriend is, Migi is always clingy. Yes, it might be funny, but the guy wants you to always assure him how much you love him.

» He never ceases to tell you how pretty you are. He loves comparing you to Sali-chan, who appears to be his first love and who also turned out to be just the persona of his twin brother, Dali. At first, you found it weird. But when you knew about his life, you understood everything and appreciated your boyfriend more.

» Sometimes you end up thinking that Migi's love languages are all five. He's very sweet and affectionate, especially with his words. He loves giving you his time. He is clingy and loves physical affection. Migi is also ready to give you his time, all the gifts in the world, and even all of him if you want to.

» But of course, not every day is sunshine and roses. When there are challenges in your relationship, Migi is the one who will try to approach you first to solve them. He hates fights. He can put up a tantrum sometimes, but after that, he makes sure that he'll make it up to you.

» Migi is very enchanting and enigmatic, especially with how he handles things. You can't help but be amazed at how he moves and solves things. He's smart, and yet, he really needs that push from you. But, of course, things will never change.

» Migi can be so silly but you know that he is the only one who can make you happy.

» Dali is definitely the serious one in the relationship. He's the rational one. Although he is not particularly outspoken regarding his emotions, the way he looks at you could stop your entire world.

» He isn't the kind of boyfriend who will throw compliments at you. He would rather show it to you instead. Or sometimes, he'll just end up teasing you, even if he meant the other way around. Even without expressing it overtly, the individual genuinely adores your appearance and demeanour. You'll always find him looking at you.

» Dali doesn't believe in love languages. He thinks it is funny. But then, even if he won't notice it, he seems to have the physical touch, quality time, and acts of service. He's sweet but not too sweet. He'll steal touches and kisses, but not always. And yes, he'll make sure to give you time, no matter how busy he is with the university.

» But of course, not every day is sunshine and roses. Dali won't be the one to fix things whenever you fight. Yes, he can be hard on you, and that can be tough. But then, you know his weakness is you, yourself, and so you use that to get his attention again and make up. You'll end up talking about the "logical ways" to solve your issues.

» Dali is very enigmatic. Actually, if you don't know him, you'll think of him as the definition of a mystery. But of course, there are times when he can be vulnerable as well (even if you can just count it on your fingers). But the quantity doesn't matter; it's the quality of relationship you have, and you know you can be proud of him as a boyfriend.

» Dali can be so serious, but you will know that you won't ever be complete without him by your side.

IT'S ABOUT TWO BROTHERS WHO HAPPEN TO BE TWINS POSING AS ONE CHILD TO SNEAK AROUND THEIR ADOPTIVE PARENTS HOUSE AND NEIGHBORHOOD TO FIGURE OUT WHO KILLED THEIR BIO MOM. ALL WHILE ACCIDENTALLY FORMING LONG LASTING RELATIONSHIPS AND EXPERIENCING NEW EMOTIONS.

CHAPTER 5 – Protection and Deception

“D-do you l-like me now, e-even just a little bit?” my brother stammered with weary blue eyes and messy blonde hair, holding up his exams proudly.

I was completely lost for words. To think that Migi, this dummy who couldn’t even get a 10 on his quizzes, was actually able to surpass my expectations and get perfect scores on both of his midterm exams.

Of course he did. Because I was there to watch all of it. Whether it was at home, or at the library when I dressed up as Sali, Migi was always studying tirelessly. Hell, he was studying much harder than I was, as I had never seen Migi work so hard in my life.

But for what? The attention of a girl that he barely knows? A “girl” who is actually me in disguise?

As I was still astonished by the fruits of Migi’s effort, I quickly realized that there was no way I could just let him down, knowing exactly what would happen if I said “no” to him.

Against my better judgment, I proposed, “How about a date this Sunday?”

Migi’s eyes lit up like he was the happiest boy in the world as he stood up on his toes.

“R-really!? Do you mean it?”

“Yeah,” I replied with a soft smile, “How about we go to the aquarium?”

“Of course, Sali! I’ll see you this Sunday!” Migi exclaimed as he turned around and pranced away while whistling. He then waved goodbye to me before leaving.

As soon as Migi was gone, my face returned to a frown as I realized what I now needed to do. I returned home as quickly as I could, leaving the wig and girls uniform in my usual hiding spot, and I scrambled back to our tent to catch my breath and wait for Migi to return and reveal the news.

As soon as I heard my brother walk and close the door, I emerged, knowing exactly what was about to happen.

“Migi, welcome back. How was school?”

What surprised me was as soon as I stepped out, Migi immediately leaped at me and hugged me tightly. His excitement was palpable.

“Dali!! She asked me out! Sali asked me out!”

I nervously hugged him in return and patted him on the back.

“W-what’s this all about, Migi?”

Migi released me and looked into my eyes. Delight was written all over his shining blue eyes.

“I got a 100 on the English and Japanese midterm because I thought Sali would like me, and she asked me out on a date! We’re going to the aquarium this Sunday!”

“That’s… impressive Migi. You did well.”

Migi then hugged me again.

“It’s all thanks to you, Dali! You were the one who told me to talk to her in the first place, and it was you who always supported me while I studied!”

Ah, that’s right. It was I who directed Migi to go after a disguised version of myself, and it was I who manipulated him into studying for the exams. But it was for the purpose of avenging Mother, something that we both have sworn to do. That’s what I told myself.

I patted him on the head.

“Still, this was something that you accomplished, Migi. I’m proud of you.”

Those words weren’t lies.

I could feel my younger brother tingling in joy from these words. Under other circumstances, I would have been just as happy as him.

Migi released me and looked at me rather nervously.

“So umm… could you give me some advice on what to wear and what to do for the date?”

Stupid Migi, how would you expect me to know that? I have the same amount of experience as you! But I guess I did know a thing or two from reading books and observing others. I accepted this as another thing that I needed to do.

“Sure,” I asserted with a confident smile, “Of course I’ll help you with this.”

Migi’s eyes beamed once again.

I instructed him on what to do during his date, and together we picked out his outfit together with the Sonoyamas. I hid in a dark corner, giving Migi a nod whenever the old couple picked something good, and shook my head whenever they suggested something tacky.

It felt strange, giving Migi advice for a date with me. But this was a promise I made to him, and so I told myself to accept the situation.

A few days later, it was Sunday, the day of our date.

After I sent Migi off, I quickly dressed up and met with him. As expected, he was overly excited to see me, not knowing that it was his twin brother under the dress and wig.

We made our way to the aquarium and began our date as Hitori and Sali. Thankfully, because Migi and I practiced many times for this day, Migi was able to go through with the date rather smoothly and was not as nervous as when we first rehearsed. We walked through the dimly lit aquarium together, where Migi excitedly pointed out the different types of fish that we saw, and he even tried at humor by imitating a stingray with his face, which I actually found to be funny.

To be honest, Migi was truly adorable, being able to express his feelings so freely and genuinely like this. I’ve always known this about Migi, but it felt quite different seeing this side of him while pretending to be someone else for the past few weeks. While his older brother Dali wasn’t around.

The sweet, innocent boy in front of me was Migi’s true self, unburdened by thoughts of avenging Mother, a side he’s always held back for so long. It felt strangely relieving and reassuring to see this, knowing that once we avenge Mother, Migi may turn out to be just fine.

But reality hit me as Migi tried to hold my hand. Ah, that’s right. Migi has fallen in love with Sali, a girl that doesn’t exist, and one that I tricked him into loving. I knew what I was doing was wrong, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell the truth.

Suddenly, Migi presented me with a gift, a necklace with two dolphins forming the shape of a heart, one pink and one blue. I couldn’t take it anymore.

I can’t keep fooling Migi like this. After I saw his earnest, heartfelt feelings, I realized that I needed to put this to an end. There’s no way I could keep this up forever. I needed to stop now before Migi would really get hurt.

I managed to gather the strength to tell Migi that “I” was moving away to a faraway town, that “I” would never see him again. As soon as I said this, he dropped the necklace, breaking the two dolphins in half.

I’m so sorry, Migi.

Yet, Migi tried his best to stay strong, telling “me” that we’ll always be connected, no matter how far apart we were. Though this relationship was fake, it was obvious that Migi’s feelings were real; it was almost as if I were to leave him.

He took one half of the pendant while I took the other, and we continued the rest of the date as usual, albeit with an air of awkwardness between us.

After the date concluded, Migi and I waved each other goodbye, and as Migi walked home in silence, I ran back as quickly as I could.

By the time I got home, it was already nighttime. The air was heavy, and I sat inside our tent, soaked in remorse for what I had done to Migi, waiting for him to come home.

Tears almost formed in my eyes before the door creaked open. I immediately stood up and emerged from the tent, anxious to see Migi’s face.

“Migi, welcome home,” I greeted, “How did the date – ”

Just as I feared, Migi stood before me in his date attire, looking down and clearly upset. Once I noticed his glistening tears streaming down his cheeks, I quickly rushed over to hug him. He hugged me back and cried into my shoulder.

“Migi. You’ve worked so hard, Migi.”

Though I tried to comfort him with these words, it was really me who wanted to cry. How could I do this to Migi, the brother who’s always trusted me, the one I’ve always tried to protect? Even if it was to avenge Mother, how could I neglect my duty as Migi’s brother?

My deception of Migi hung heavy on my heart and stung me as if I were stabbed by a knife. A part of me wanted to come clean and tell Migi the truth, but fear held me back, knowing that it would only cause further pain to Migi and could threaten to tear us apart.

I continued to hold Migi, telling him that I was here for him, yet the guilt persisted. In my hand I clutched the dolphin pendant, something that I came to treasure, a proof of Migi’s feelings, his love, and the connectedness we shared.

For the next few nights, we slept close together. Eventually, Migi seemed to have gotten over his heartbreak, returning to the usual Migi, though he was never quite the same as before.

On rare occasions at night, I would see Migi gazing at the stars with the dolphin pendant in his hand, most likely thinking about Sali. I would walk up to him, take his hand and hold it, and face him with a reassuring smile. He would then face me with a soft, bittersweet smile and gleaming eyes holding back tears, and hold my hand tightly as if thanking me for being there for him.

Yet, the guilt persisted, weighing heavily on me.

Even though we were identical twins, Migi was really nothing like me. So honest, so genuine, so innocent. Even though I made fun of him for it, it was this about Migi that I loved the most about him. But I could never be like that. Why did things have to be this way?

After we investigated the Ichijo house a second time and discovered that Eiji likely killed our mother, it was clear that we needed to interrogate him. But this time, there was no way I could bring Migi into this. The people in the Ichijo family, especially the mother, were dangerous people, and if Migi were to get caught again, who knows what would happen to him. If he got hurt, I would not be able to forgive myself.

That’s why I needed to do this alone. Even if it meant deceiving my brother, I was determined to protect him, to do anything for his sake. I clutched the dolphin pendant in my hand before putting on the wig once more.

Migi, wait for me.

Doll Leaves white is described as a good match in a comment from 2022, but the included photo link was broken unfortunately. I’ll see if I can ask the commenter to repost it!

Doll Legend jointed hands might have worked but the company seems to be defunct. ;-;

Dali's Book (Migi & Dali Observation)

This observation comes from the Migi & Dali sequel manga, but to be honest it's not really a spoiler.

I noticed that Dali was reading this book:

The Japanese title can be roughly translated as The Proof of Two People. Note that the original author is Agota Kristof, a Hungarian writer who lived in Switzerland and wrote the original book in French, as shown by La preuve or The Proof. The French title (among other clues) seems to suggest that the twins are of French ancestry.

This book is actually the second of a trilogy also known as the "Book of Lies Trilogy."

Le Grand Cahier (1986), also called The Notebook,

La preuve (1988), also called The Proof

Le Troisieme Mensonge (1991) , also called The Third Lie.

These books were also translated to Japanese (see above), though I am not aware of the scale of influence these books had in Japanese culture.

Here's a basic summary of the trilogy that I found:

With all the stark simplicity of a fractured fairy tale, the trilogy tells the story of twin brothers, Claus and Lucas, locked in an agonizing bond that becomes a gripping allegory of the forces that have divided “brothers” in much of Europe since World War II. Kristof’s postmodern saga begins with The Notebook, in which the brothers are children, lost in a country torn apart by conflict, who must learn every trick of evil and cruelty merely to survive. In The Proof, Lucas is challenging to prove his own identity and the existence of his missing brother, a defector to the “other side.” The Third Lie, which closes the trilogy, is a biting parable of Eastern and Western Europe today and a deep exploration into the nature of identity, storytelling, and the truths and untruths that lie at the heart of them all. 

I haven't read these books myself, but it's obvious that Claus and Lucas are an analogy for Migi and Dali, that The Notebook refers to the twins' journey in surviving on their own, and that The Proof is a reference to the twins' divergence as Migi accepted his new life while Dali fell further into his obsession with revenge. I'm not sure what The Third Lie refers to; I'm guessing that it could be a reference to a possible dark alternate timeline if either Migi or Dali were to die.

Edit: I have now read these books, and what I can say is that my above estimation was incorrect. I would attribute The Notebook to the twins' journey in surviving on their own and living in Origon Village and The Proof to the events that take place after the end of Migi & Dali. As for The Third Note, I suppose that would be up to the reader's imagination, though I certainly do not want to think about making any connections because of what happens in that book.

Bonus note: Kristof's trilogy also inspired Shigesato Itoi's JRPG Mother 3, where the twins Lucas and Claus are an obvious reference to the twins of the same names in Kristof's trilogy. Here's a Reddit post that goes over these inspirations:

I just wanted to bring this up because the twins in Mother 3 sure do remind me of Migi and Dali.

Now, I never played Mother 3 nor am I familiar with the game, so I'm sure someone else can come up with some additional connections between these twins. I imagine that this would also inspire some cool fanart ideas.

Anyways, I thought it was a nice detail that Dali is reading a book that happens to describe part of his own life. Perhaps Nami Sano created Migi & Dali using Kristof's trilogy as an inspiration just as Itoi did for Mother 3. Whether there are any other implications or connections that can be drawn from this is something that should be addressed in a different post.
